Hello from Mumsnet Towers...
Where we're limbering up for next month's World Cup with a footie-themed shortlist for June's Book of the Month. And don't forget kick-off for May's Book Club discussion of Diamond Star Halo is Tuesday (25 May) at 8pm: author Tiffany Murray will be logging on, too.
Following on from Riven's sterling work with David Cameron, we're planning a new MN campaign for a less Byzantine nappy-provision system for children with special needs: tell us what you think. And, if you haven't already, please sign the petition for better financial education in schools that we're supporting with moneysavingexpert.com
Now for this week's parenting news...
Child benefit 'to be cut': Radical reforms of the benefits system are to be announced next week and the universal child benefit has been identified as an area ripe for cuts. A report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) says child benefit should be taxed, and the extra money given to the country's poorest families. The IPPR proposes changing the benefit from £20.30 a week for the eldest child and £13.40 for subsequent children to a flat rate of £22. For families on more than £37,400, the weekly benefit would be taxed at 40%, making it worth £13.20 per child. (Guardian 20.05 10)
New-dad depression goes unnoticed: Many new fathers experience post-natal depression, yet most cases go undetected and untreated. So say US researchers, who think as many as one in 10 new fathers have the baby blues – more than is currently recognised. Lack of sleep, new responsibilities and/or supporting a wife who herself has postnatal depression can all be triggers, they say. New fathers are generally happiest in the early weeks after the birth of their baby, say the researchers, with depression kicking in after three to six months. (BBC News 14.05.10)

Quote of the week: Amid all the who-should-be-the-new-Labour-leader politicking, fruitstick takes a moment to wonder about musical side of the Miliband family: "No one's mentioned the other brothers, Glenn and Steve."

HOLIDAY FUN! Ben Renshaw, Director of the Happiness Project, is taking your questions in our latest Mumsnet Q&A. Ben is currently working with Keycamp and has helped them create the Little Book of Holiday Fun. With the school break coming up, Ben can answer questions on how to make sure every member of the family gets the most out of holiday time together this summer, whether that be agreeing on family activities or keeping the peace on long journeys.

Aitch's TV round-up: Money, BBC2, Sun 23 May and Weds 26 May, 9pm
Yes, yes, yes, I know that it's the last Ashes To Ashes on Friday and that, on Saturday, Somewhere Over The Rainbow reach an unholy climax for its audience of shoe fetishists and folk who like seeing 17-year-old girls sobbing their eyes out (me!) but I'm nevertheless calling Money my pick of the week. Why? Oh, because there's some cash behind the production by the looks of things, the source material (while Martin Amis might not be particularly MN-friendly) is high quality and, well, it's got Jerry Hall in it. Plus, let's face it, it'll be nice to see people, even fictional ones, living the hedonistic high life because those days are well and truly gone, my friends...
