Now for this week's parenting news ...
Swine flu parties 'bad idea': Throwing 'swine flu parties' in an attempt to get immunity against the virus while it is a fairly mild form is not a good idea, doctors said this week after reports of people, including families, intentionally mixing with friends who have flu. Their reasoning is that it is best to be infected before the winter when the virus could become more deadly, but public health expert Dr Richard Jarvis said such behaviour could undermine the fight against swine flu. (BBC Online 30.06.09) Meanwhile, it emerged that the first child to die in Britain after contracting swine flu had a rare genetic disorder that made her more likely than other people to catch the disease. (Guardian 01.07.09)
Fertility tourism boost: Hundreds of 40-plus British women are travelling to European fertility clinics because British clinics won't take them, according to the first major continent-wide study of fertility tourism. The research shows women travel to get treatment banned in their own countries, so Italian women go abroad because of legal restrictions on IVF, and French lesbians bypass a ban on IVF by seeking treatment in Belgium. Hundreds of older British women, disadvantaged by the UK's long waiting lists and a shortage of eggs, travel to the Czech Republic and Spain. (Guardian 30.06.09) Meanwhile, a controversial embryo quality test that could double IVF success rates is to be properly trialled. (Times 29.06.09)

Bucharest on the potentially perilous pitfalls of pregnancy: "You get so used to grown men whose first names you don't know shuftying about up your nethers that you have to chant to yourself, like a mantra, in the dentist's waiting room, "Don't take your pants off, it's just teeth this time."

nanajo shares her bittersweet thoughts on parenting all over again: "I am a 52-year-old grandmother raising (with my husband) our two little grandsons. They are almost six and just turned three. We have had them for two and a half years. The journey has been joyous and frightening, stressful and lonely, deeply poignant and so very close to the bone."
