The FA Tesco Skills programme
Getting children active is important for givnig them the best possible start - so it's key to teach them early about how important it is a healthy diet and lifestyle, and helping them enjoy sport.
The FA Tesco Skills is a unique coaching programme designed to do just that, giving children aged 5-11 the opportunity to benefit from specialist coaching which develops their football skills - and helps them improve their confidence and ability with other sports.
The coaching we offer is unique, and quite different to traditional football coaching, based on a model that puts the children at the heart of the learning process in a way that is engaging and fun.
So instead of running drills over and over again, or being told what to do by the coach, the children are encouraged to take part in fun sessions that challenge them to make decisions and try new things. This enables them to learn more effectively, builds their self-esteem and problem-solving capabilities, and develops their teamwork skills.
Primary school coaching
FA Tesco Skills coaches are qualified to work in schools, delivering PE lessons supporting the teacher. These sessions are free to schools and are delivered in line with what the children are already studying in their PE lessons.
We currently work with over 1200 schools a year, free of charge for between six and 12 weeks.
After school and holiday Skills coaching
We run weekly after school coaching sessions called Skills Centres and free football coaching during the school holidays. Our coaching sessions cater for all abilities and combine learning skills, playing games and having fun in a safe and inclusive environment.
Holiday sessions are completely free and weekly Skills Centres cost £1 to £2 per week.
All FA Tesco Skills coaches are fully CRB-checked and first aid trained. Each coach holds relevant youth based coaching qualifications in football to ensure they have the capabilities to give each young person the best possible experience playing football.
FA Tesco Skills has been providing high quality football coaching for children since 2007 and to date have provided over 3 million child places. The programme is run by The Football Association with funding coming from Tesco and Sport England.
