Greetings from Mumsnet HQ,
...where we've welcomed yet another addition to the Mumsnet clan, TillyBookClub has given birth to a baby boy. He remains nameless at present, but we're pretty sure he'll be called Atticus, inspired by the Mumsnet book club of course.
To continue carrying the literary torch into this month remember to pick up your copy of Charlotte's Mendelson's 'When We Were Bad', a brilliant, funny look at modern family life from a very sharp-eyed writer.
Before we all start thinking of summer holidays, don't forget to post your winter sun or skiing reviews. And if you've found the perfect spot to spend a sun-soaked bank holiday Monday, then why not add it to Mumsnet Local.
Finally it's competition time and this week we've got five sets of Nintendo DS games to give away, a bit of indoor entertainment for when the rain comes.
And now for this week's parenting news ...
Autism link to parents: Parents of autistic children are twice as likely to have had psychiatric illness. A study of 30,000 children found that rates of autism rose substantially if parents had suffered schizophrenia, depression or a range of other psychiatric disorders. A child's risk of autism was 70% greater if one parent had been diagnosed with mental illness, and twice as high as average if both parents had psychiatric disorders, according to the report in the Pediatrics journal. (Guardian 06.05.08)
Increase in young children self-harming: The number of under-10s being admitted to hospital with eating disorders and after self-harming is on the increase, according to figures from the Department of Health. They showed that 3,800 under-18s were admitted to hospital with eating disorders in the past four years, with the number increasing in that time by 10% - among them were 270 boys and 163 girls under ten. Meanwhile more than 15,000 children were admitted to hospital for self-inflicted injuries, 169 of them aged under ten. (Daily Telegraph 06.05.08)
Other stories in brief
Overweight women are more prone to lengthier pregnancies and birth complications, new research suggests (Guardian 06.05.08); parents are stopping their children cycling to school or using their bikes on roads because of growing concerns about safety, Cycling England says (Guardian 06.05.08); breastfeeding makes children significantly smarter and helps to improve reading and writing, the biggest study of its kind has found (Daily Telegraph 06.05.08); the government has ordered a review of how schools should educate the children's estimated 300,000 dyslexic children, after admitting that many are left without tailored teaching (Guardian 07.05.08); and parents are turning their backs on traditional parents' evenings and prefer more informal contact with schools to learn about their children's progress, according to research commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (Guardian 08.05.08).

No DVDs of this beauty exposé were available in advance but it's a subject so close to the more vain MNers that I couldn't let it pass un-noticed. Of course, the majority of them will be so busy buffing, primping and waxing that they'll forget to watch so in the end it'll just be us fuglies tuning in to scoff at them plastering sheep placenta onto their faces and paying a fortune for the privilege. You hear me, Cod? Cos I'm talking to you. Read more here.

In this land of year-round, permanently available produce, one of the last great seasonal foods we have is British asparagus. April to June is the short period when this delicious stuff hits the shops so now is the time to gorge.
