Hello from Mumsnet HQ...
Where we're tearing through What Was Lost by Catherine O'Flynn, our March book of the month, in time for the discussion on Tues night. Catherine is going to email answers to your questions after the chat, so hope you can join us at 8pm. Another fine book is our very own Toddlers Guide. And you can help us to spread the gospel according to MNetters by putting up some posters wherever you can (and what's more you'll be entered into this week's competitions if you do).
Thanks for all your contributions and suggestions to policywonk, who's marshalling an impressive stack of facts/figures/ideas ahead of her stint as the MN blogger at next week's G20 summit. We'll be bringing you regular updates once it all starts on 1 April and, if you want the condensed version, follow MN's Tweets.
And, finally, the Department of Health is looking for women who've given birth in the past two years in England who are willing to help parents-to-be by talking about the choices they made while they were pregnant. They're particularly keen to talk to women from ethnic minority or mixed race backgrounds. If selected, you'll be reimbursed for your time and expenses. To volunteer, please
click here and, while you're at it, give yourself the chance of winning £250 of vouchers for a store of your choice by filling in this short survey.
Now for this week's parenting news ...
Pay granny demand: Grandparents want to be paid for the thousands of hours of free childcare they provide each year and their claim for financial recognition is supported by most parents, says a report from the charity Grandparents Plus. It is calling on ministers to allow grandparents to receive the childcare tax credit, currently worth up to £300 a week, if they are helping parents to return to work. Under existing rules, only parents using nurseries and registered childminders can claim the benefit. One in four of all families, and half of all single parents, rely on grandparents to provide childcare each week. The value of the work is estimated at £3.9 billion a year. (Times 25.03.09)
OK to eat in labour: It is usually safe for healthy women to eat during labour, according to a study from King's College, London. The study found eating had no effect on the duration of labour, and says the practice of preventing women from eating during labour, which has been common since the 1940s, is over-cautious. Doctors had advised women not to eat because of the risk that they might need a caesarean under a general anaesthetic, and the associated risk of inhaling food, but most caesareans are now performed under local anaesthetics, the study points out. LewisFanIsOnADiet predicted an influx of new members after her local radio made MN its Site Of The Week. Looking for a great day (or evening) out? This week, Mumsnetters' recommendations include:
Aitch's TV round-up:
The Wire, Mon 30 Mar, BBC2, 11.20pm
It's here. Finally, when I use the MN name LesterFreamon, people will know why it's so darned COOL. I'm going to tell you that The Wire is a cop show, so you'll think you understand what it is and watch it and then you'll see that it's simply the most creative, most beautifully performed, most amusing, most conscience-pricking, most shocking, most gripping drama about urban life ever made. Drugs, deprivation, loyalty, family, desperation, greed, love, opportunity, it's all there in its Balzac-ian glory. The poh-leece aren't even the best characters, truth be told, although during series one you will be forgiven for thinking that Jimmy McNulty is pretty good. I've got his name as well, I think [goes to check].
Carmenere's recipe of the week:
Anchovies' Kleftiko
No one does lamb like the Greeks, so if you want a slightly more exotic roast this Easter check out this Kleftiko recipe. Not only is it meltingly delicious, it's a one-pot wonder and perfect for the slow cooker, leaving you more time for hunting eggs, scoffing hot cross buns or MN-ing.
That's all, we're off to think of a closing line for next week's newsletter.
Love,
Mumsnet Towers
