Ingredients

  • 175g self-raising flour

  • 300g icing sugar

  • 175g caster sugar

  • 2 tbsp milk

  • 25g cocoa powder

  • 1 1.5 tbsp cocoa

  • 1 1.5 tsp baking powder

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 for the cake:

  • 1 for the icing:

  • 3 tbsp hot water

  • 175g butter

  • 75g butter

Method

For the cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 180C/Gas Mark 4
  2. Blend cocoa and hot water and leave to cool.
  3. Once cool, add all remaining cake ingredients to bowl and beat well.
  4. Divide between 2 7-inch sandwich tins and bake in oven for 25 minutes.

For the icing:

  1. Melt the butter, add the cocoa and stir over a low heat for one minute.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the milk and icing sugar.
  3. Beat well and allow to cool a little.
  4. Use icing to sandwich the two cakes together and then cover the outside, too.
  5. Decorate the cake with smarties, maltesers, M&Ms, chocolate buttons etc.
