Family Friendly Awards 2013: the winners
Heathrow airport, the National Trust and Explore Learning were among the big winners at Mumsnet's Family Friendly Awards, hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg tonight.
Each received an Innovation Award, designed to recognise those members of Mumsnet’s Family Friendly scheme which have shown originality and leadership in their policies during the course of the year.
Heathrow took home its prize for the airport's ‘Stay & Play’ areas, featuring slides, tunnels and soft foam shapes to keep children entertained. Their initiative has also eased stress on parents by introducing family lanes in security, as well as roaming arts and crafts for the kids, who can also enjoy story time and activities as part of ‘Stay & Play’.
The National Trust received the Innovation Award for their wonderful ’50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ campaign. The popular bucket list - which features star gazing, making mud pies, walking barefoot, and playing conkers, to name but a few things - was designed to help all families enjoy the great outdoors with the National Trust.
Finally, Explore Learning won the award in recognition of their free workshops for parents seeking extra support to help their children with phonics or maths homework. The sessions aim to take the mystery out of the National Curriculum and new teaching techniques, allowing parents to ask questions in a relaxed environment.
Other companies celebrating included Gold Award winners Pizza Express, Butlins, Matalan, Metro Bank and Starcom MediaVest Group.
Each was recognised by Mumsnet for consistently meeting family friendly criteria in their internal policies as well as for customers and employees.
Value for money and customer service was the key to a win for Pizza Express, while Butlins received top honours from Mumsnetters in praise of its resort activities for children.
For the third year running, Matalan went from strength to strength to take home Gold for its dedication to family friendliness across the business.
Metro Bank received the award for promoting part time roles in its recruitment material, and welcoming children on site, whilst Starcom MediaVest Group was recognised for its policies for fathers and maternity support, and approved by Mumsnet as a role-model in promoting the work-life balance.
Mumsnet’s Family Friendly scheme has been working with businesses since 2010, with over 1.5m employees involved to date. Through the use of ‘secret shoppers’, staff audits and policy analysis, we track member companies to ensure they are living up to public commitments and continuing to develop family friendly practices.
Runners up at last night's ceremony included Barclays, McDonald's, Talk Talk, The Athenaeum Hotel, Telefonica UK Ltd, BT and RSA.
