Things to do with foam shapes

Hobbycraft's selection of fun foam shapes will keep your DCs amused for hours. If you're groaning at the thought of picking PVA glue from every surface after a craft session, don't worry - you can choose the self-adhesive variety instead.

There's plenty you can do with just a few foam shapes, a lolly stick, and of course, the trusty googly eye. Here Hobbycraft offer a few fun suggestions for kids to have a go at.

You will need:

  • Foam shapes
  • Glitter foam stickers
  • Large button
  • Striped paper
  • Glue
  • Craft knife or scissors

How to make

  1. Select two contrasting colour foam shapes. Use a ruler and pencil to mark the frame window on one, then cut out with a craft knife.
  2. Use foam glue to stick the two shapes together, leaving one edge unglued to allow a photograph to slide in.
  3. For the handbag (pictured): attach a triangle of striped paper and a button to represent the handbag flap, then decorate with the self-adhesive flowers.
  4. For the train (pictured): add letters and stars.
  5. Add a stand for the frame by gluing a flap of strong card to the back of the foam.

You will need:

  • Dowel
  • Piping cord
  • Card
  • Acrylic paints
  • Magnetic discs
  • Organza
  • Glue

How to make

  1. Take a piece of white card and drip (or flick, if the mood takes you) coloured paint onto it to form patterns. Leave to dry flat.
  2. Cut five fish shapes from holographic card. Cut fin shapes from the painted card and glue one to each fish.
  3. Add a circle of white card for each fish's eye, then glue a magnet on top to look like an eyeball.
  4. Wrap three magnets in organza and tie this to one end of the piping cord - this will be your fishing lure.
  5. Tie the other end of the cord to the dowel - the fishing rod - and add a little glue to secure.

TO PLAY: Hold the fishing rod at arms length and try to ‘catch’ as many fish as you can in one minute
