What Car? has revealed the best green cars of 2012 in its annual Green Awards, with the diesel-engine BMW 3 Series 320d Efficient Dynamics taking the trophy of overall winner. 

The awards praise cars that are particularly environmentally friendly for their class, but are also great cars to drive and own in their own right. 

What makes this year's awards more valuable than ever is that the decisions have taken into account each car's real-world fuel economy and CO2 emissions, gathered by What Car?'s True MPG testing programme, rather relying purely on official figures supplied by the Government. The results, which are taken from tests made with real drivers in everyday driving conditions, give car buyers even more information to help them keep an eye on the environment and make savings on fuel costs.
