A woman disappears...

One moment, Selena Cole is in the playground with her children and the next, she has vanished without a trace.

A woman returns...

Twenty hours later, Selena is found safe and well, but with no memory of where she has been.

What took place in those missing hours, and are they linked to the discovery of a nearby murder?

Is it a forgetting or a deception?

Meet the author: Emma Kavanagh

What are you reading now?

I have just started The Trouble With Goats And Sheep by Joanna Cannon. I’ve been waiting to read this for such a long time and the wait was entirely justified. Her writing style is just beautiful, utterly captivating.

What is the last book you bought someone as a gift?

I bought Career Of Evil by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling) for my best friend, Donna. I am forever thrusting books onto people and ordering them to read them and you just can’t go wrong with the inimitable Ms Rowling.

Is research a big part of your writing process?

Huge! I have just been setting up a meeting with a high-ranking police officer I know from my police psychology days, so I can pick his brain about police procedure. Inaccuracy in writing is a big bugbear of mine. I do everything I possibly can so that events in my books feel authentic.

Do you have any peculiar writing rituals or habits?

I always sit in the same place and I like to write in the mornings. I’m just far more creative then and the words flow far more easily. Afternoons are dedicated to research, plotting and admin.

What advice would you offer to aspiring writers?

Learn as much as you can about the craft of writing. Constructing a novel is something that takes time to figure out and it’s never a good idea to tell yourself you know all there is to know about writing. There’s always room for improvement. The other thing that should be engraved on the forehead of writers is never give up. EVER.

Can you tell us about 'The Missing Hours’?

The Missing Hours tells the story of a mother and businesswoman who takes her children to a playground and then vanishes. Some time later, she is found, with no recollection of what took place in those intervening hours. Are they linked somehow to the murder of a solicitor? Sometimes the solving of a case is just the beginning.
