Apple Tree Yard: January 2014 book of the month and giveaway
"There can't be a woman alive who hasn't once realised, in a moment of panic, that she's in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong man… A compelling and bravely-written book."
That's how Hilary Mantel described our January Book of the Month by Mumsnet Academy speaker Louise Doughty.
Apple Tree Yard opens with a trial, where Yvonne (52, a well-known geneticist, attractive, happily married) is giving evidence.
Yvonne narrates, giving insights into the recklessness and self-deception that lead to a sexual encounter with a man about whom she knows nothing.
As she tries to fill in the gaps with assumptions and guesses, the affair with the stranger continues and leads to an increasingly alarming web of violence and brutality.
A brilliantly addictive combination of courtroom drama, crime thriller and literary psychological novel, Apple Tree Yard is perfectly structured and builds to a baited-breath climax.
It is also a fascinating study of how society views middle-aged women, and the injustices and manipulations of our justice system.
