My Beautiful England
"Despite their three different backgrounds, and languages, Sammy, Su and Lenka understood each other... it seemed there was a language amongst women, a silent language that said more than words ever could."
In a deprived Northern town, three very different women are thrown together at a local language school, united by their search for a new identity and desire to interact with others.
Su, a Thai bride, arrives after the tsunami to live with her ageing husband. Despite her best efforts to become 'Englishised', visions of the tsunami and Thai superstitions continually impede her progress.
Samina, from Pakistan, live with her new husband and domineering mother-in-law, she longs for the independence of other western women.
Lenka is from Poland, and lives in a women's refuge with her daughter, hiding from her abusive husband while trying to rebuild their lives.
My Beautiful England highlights the often overlooked human stories behind the bigger picture of immigration in the UK, offering an emotionally resonant and ultimately hopeful exploration of friendships across cultures.
'The book is full of joy, hope and gut-wrenching sadness and is not at all what you expect when you first start reading.' Book Geek
'It is difficult to believe that this is her debut novel, she has really got to the heart of each of these women.' Anne Cater, Random Things Through My Letterbox
