seems like dd1 has started having allergic reactions at school now. she told me that her lip went fat when she had lunch. i have phoned up the school to find out what was on the menu, as dd1 cant remember what she apart from spaghetti, and they are calling me tomorrow. am wondering if dd1 would be better off having packed lunches, but as we dont know what she is allergic to with regards to food and colourings the same thing could happen anyway.

'mum, at lunch today my lip went fat' |
(16 Posts) |
oh dear you knew this might happen, didn't you? Did they give her priton?
havent got any at school. must make sure i give them a bottle tomorrow.
i really dont know what to do. i feel school lunches are good for her, but really need to get a grip on whats happening with her allergies. packed lunches may be the safest option, but as she can change what she reacts to day to day even that may not be safe.
anyone elses kids with undiagnosed allergies, or has bizarre reactions had this?

don't know this is helpful, but what your DD1 had sounds like the sort of reaction I get to brazil nuts - I get a bit wheezy, my mouth feels sore and I have a slightly swollen lip - presumably the "fat lip" she is describing.
i really hope you can easily isolate what may have caused the reaction.
what a shame you're having this on your plate on top of everything else

I had this reaction just after I had dd. A mw told me to drink full fat cows milk to help my milk production (I know I know). Anyway after about 2 days of drinking about 6 pints a day I came out in hives and I had a really fat lip for 24 hours. Stopped drinking the milk and back onto semi skimmed and loads of calamine on the hives and I was ok.
Hope you sort it out soon

Both my DCs have contact allergy to some ingredient in some spagetti hoops, spaghetti and baked beans that they get at school lunches. Lips get very badly swollen, red and sore.
I've stopped them having them as at this time of year their lips were getting so sore and were becoming covered with open sores
They are already on a non-dairy diet so god knows what they will end up being fed now that tomato based sauces are off the menu too!

soapbox- tomatoes, strawberries and peppers seem to go together in aggravating my dd's eczema. We're also dairy free now
the main reaction before was to tarttrazine, and i know the school has dd1 pictures in the kitchen saying no tartrazine, so we've covered that one. i really dont fancy el9imation diet with an almost 5yr old. i have told her to tell a teacher if it happens again, and i will ask if its possible to get a list of what she is eating each day.
Misdee, DS reacts like that to tomate but only in contact, slightly to potatoes and...peanuts
Waiting for an appointment for the diagnose..

Probably not at all helpful but in my teens I went through a phase of not being able to eat tomatoe sauce - I'd get swollen lips and what looked like cold sores!!
misdee, ds has some severe allergies and some mild ones. What frustrates me is the unpredictable nature of it all. For instance once a week after swimming he has chicken dinosaurs, he has done for a year but suddenly had a reaction to them a couple of weeks ago. Several times he has come out in hives and I have no idea what has caused them because he hasnt eaten anything new. For us piriton (and epipens) are always close by and ds goes NOWHERE without them. So, my advice is to be prepared for unexpected reactions, leave piriton at the school, get your gps advice (mine wrote to the school emphasising the seriousness of dss allergies) and consider a packed lunch (ds will have these when he starts full-time in April.) Having said that, it might well be a one-off. Does she see an allergist?
i cant eat unpeeled apples and a few other unpeeled fruit as the preservatives get my lips all atingle and plump!!!
misdee does your child have an epipen yet? If not you might want to talk to your doctor about it as fat lips can come before anaphylactic reactions. Bunny2 the anaphylaxis campaign issued a warning at one stage about turkey dinosaurs that were made in a factory using nuts, the manufacturer changed the process but ts something I'd never have thought of checking for nut warnings. Really difficult dealing with allergies - my son reacted to one flavour of Heinz soup but not another - they wouldn't tell me what was in the flavouring and he'd eaten all the main ingredients without problem [sad[
to misdee. you must get a referral from your gp to an allergy clinic. tell them its urgent.
the school phoned and they said she had the spag bol and jelly for afters. as dd1 said the reaction happened during lunch, i asked them to send me the ingrediants lists.
for the bolognese sauce it contains
tomato (31%), onion (8%), wheat flour, sugar, salt, garlic, yeast extract, hydrogenated vegetable oil, basil, falourings (contain flavour enhancer E621 and milk) herb and spice extracts, glucose syrup, citric acid and colour (ammonia caramel)
will get gp's appoinbtment at weekend, i stupidly forgot about dd1 last allergy clinic appoint so have be referred again i think.
