Woolly Hugs : We are making a blanket for the very lovely cathpip. Donors and crafters, can anyone help us?

Heartbreaking news we’re afraid, cathpip’s beautiful daughter Pippa passed away on April 10th, after an infection led to septic shock. She was just 3 years old. There are no words, we are just so very sorry. Our thoughts are with all who love and miss her. Only ten days before, the family were celebrating the safe arrival of their second son. Lovely cathpip’s thread is here if you would like to post condolences. There is the most beautiful smiley photo of Pippa posted near the beginning.

We are so pleased the family have accepted our offer of a Woolly Hug. Thank you to our lovely Mouseface who is a great friend of the family in RL for first introducing the idea to cathpip. Together we shall make this Woolly Hug with love in every stitch for them all. We hope it gives them some comfort. So, can you help us? We shall need help from donors and crafters alike. Thank you in advance, we know folk have hearts of gold.

If you are able to join us, please PM me with your offers of help ( RatherBeOnThePiste) so we know where we are. If you would like to donate funds, send wool to a crafter or would like to join in but will need donated wool, I can help you, or if you would just like to join, let us know you are on board. Thank you.

Knotty ( KnottyLocks ) will help with any crafting queries. All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts. Please do PM Knotty or post questions on this thread if you need any help.

We asked cath about Pippa, she says she loved pink, princesses, ballet, swimming, dog walking and nursery, and her two favourite films were Disney’s Tangled and The Little Mermaid. Bless her heart.

This may well give you some ideas for squares but please don't feel daunted, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and play a vital role in the overall effect. We do have initials, if this could be you, do PM. Thank you.

The Yarn we are Using….
* Artesano Superwash Merino DK
* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (discontinued but some still around)
* Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
* Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
* James C. Brett Pure Merino DK (also discontinued, some about))
* Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
* Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK
Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear.

The Colours
* Pinks
* Purples
* Lighter greens
* Duck egg blue
* Cream - but please choose one of the following - Debbie Bliss Rialto DK 02 ecru, James C. Brett Pure Merino DK no 7 or Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK WM4 cream

Help with buying yarn
Our crafters recommend the following online retailers - Woolwarehouse, RKM Wools, Deramores, Wise Badger, Black Sheep Woolsand Cucumberpatch Deramores are good if you are out of the UK as they have flat rate shipping. Wool is also sold on Ebay, and at John Lewis

Our crafting guide can give you help with buying colours, and practical info and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for patterns. Squares to be 6 inches, using 4mm hook or needles. Always feel free to post questions on the thread if unsure. When finished please sew in your ends but don’t block your work. Then PM me (RatherBeOnThePiste) for details for posting.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs/@MNWoollyHugs which are both good ways to keep in touch.

Thinking of beautiful Pippa and all who love and miss her.

Thank you thanks

I'm in. So sad, I can't imagine how cathpip and her family are feeling right now, I hope the woolly hug will bring some comfort......

KnottyLocks Thu 01-May-14 21:41:30

From the drops list I would go for:

the pinks, the darker warm purple

the north sea

as starters.

NearTheWindymill Thu 01-May-14 21:42:34

pm me your address again please Pistey and I'll bung something in the post.

So sad - brings back Alfie's smell and MNet wasn't around then, let alone Woolly Hugs. sad thanks

NoWayNoHow Thu 01-May-14 21:43:45

I saw her thread earlier - utterly heartbreaking. Count me in for some squares.

I won't need work - I have purple and quite a dark pink (almost cerise I guess). Is the latter too dark?

Such terribly sad news. I think I will need to order some wool as not sure I've got any appropriate colours. I would like to make a square or two, but I have my finals over the next few weeks so may not be able to finish and post until 20th May or so. Would that be too late?

Needasilverlining Thu 01-May-14 22:37:51

My 3yo DS adores Tangled. The thought of losing him makes my throat close.

I have a bit of purple and cream from the last blanket and need to order some wool so I'll get some pink. I'm in.

Would be honoured to donate wool, shall email Pistey for instructions. x

I'm in, it's made me cry.
I'll need wool donating though.
I've been practicing my crochet and can now be slightly more adventurous than a wonky plain square so if possible could I have a scrap of a second colour? I'm learning to do initials.
I shall pm pistey.

KnottyLocks Thu 01-May-14 23:23:06

Thinking of beautiful Pippa tonight, much love to all the family xxx

SallyBear Fri 02-May-14 00:21:52

I'm in. I'll do a few squares. I saw that ninja linked to the drops merino. I'll probably use that rather than Debbie Bliss as I'm on a budget this month, if that's ok with you both.

Thanks Knotty. Once I've crawled out from under the pile of ridiculousness that is my current to do list I shall pop back and see how things are going.

So terribly sad I'd like to be able to help if I can. x

Raeray Fri 02-May-14 00:49:38

This is so terribly sad. My heart goes out to all of beautiful little Pippa's family.
I wish I could knit but I can't so would love to donate some wool.
I'm unsure of how to pm on the app if someone hasn't messaged me already!! Please message me and I will donate.

Jacksmania Fri 02-May-14 03:51:02

Knotty or Pistey, would the Sublime shade Julep qualify as duck egg blue? Link to Julep here.

And would James C Brett Pure Merino in shade 16 (apple green) be ok for the green?

If Julep doesn't work, I have JCB shade 12 which is Sky Blue I think.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 02-May-14 05:57:14

Morning. Will have a look at julep when on the big computer. Thanks lovely Jacks

Sally very happy to send you donated wool if you like?

Thanks Raeray that's so kind, will do. And mud. thanks

Thanks everyone, am off to PMs thanks

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Mhw02 Fri 02-May-14 06:58:39

What terrible news. I will of course do some squares.

OwlCapone Fri 02-May-14 07:16:49

The code SC14 (I think) gives a 10% discount at Wool Warehouse, but not on the sale items so not the Drops yarn.

Deramores has similar codes.

Kveta Fri 02-May-14 07:17:29

how utterly heartbreaking sad

I'd love to contribute a square or two - would it be possible to get some wool? I will message once on proper computer later.

Thanks again to the lovely donors, what stars they are, your wool has arrived safely with your crafter. No go crafters, go!

thanks WoodBurnerBabe

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

CakeyCakeyCakey Sat 10-May-14 08:06:50

I've done my first ever granny square and am experimenting with new stitches.

Woolley hugs do amazing things for the people who receive the hugs but I wonder if they realise the effect it has on the donors and hookers? I for one feel a great sense of worth for helping even a little bit but as well as that it is encouraging me to think outside the plain dc squares I started with and to try new stitches and techniques as I want to make my squares even a fraction worthy of the recipient.
I am trying new things and experimenting where I'm sure I would have just carried on doing solid squares forever.
So thank you.

WoolPixie Sat 10-May-14 13:35:33

Quick question for you Knotty - I have made a square that has a bit of laciness behind a rose, but it has a solid edge. Is this okay or shall I start again? Laciness being banned and all grin

WoolPixie Sat 10-May-14 13:37:07

Here's a pic

KnottyLocks Sat 10-May-14 13:56:05

Oh that's lovely smile

Probably as lacy as we can get away with! Send it thanks

WoolPixie Sat 10-May-14 13:57:25

Phew! Thanks x

KnottyLocks Sat 10-May-14 13:57:55

Cakey, I think your words describe how many of us feel too. Thank you x

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 10-May-14 14:27:59

That's beautiful, woolpixie.

Cakey flowers I feel that way too, but you put it much better than I could.

WoolPixie Sat 10-May-14 15:20:13

Agreed Cakey, very eloquent. I've only done a few Woolly Hugs so far and felt really bad initially that I couldn't afford to buy the wool as well as the time to make a few squares. Receiving lovely donor wool makes me try twice as hard to make something beautiful iyswim.

Allalonenow Sat 10-May-14 15:57:21

Gosh WoolPixie that's so lovely. rather like the Glasgow rose.

I know what you mean Cakey I feel just like that.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 10-May-14 21:21:19

Beautifully said Cakey x

SallyBear Sun 11-May-14 07:45:13

Wool arrived today - beautiful colours! Will get hooking and try to do the colours justice!

I have done 2 squares, but one is quite a lot floppier and slightly larger than the other - can you deal with this?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 13-May-14 07:15:23

Morning smile

It will be just fiiiiiiiiiiiiine! Send it Wood - there is quite a variation in the size of the six inch square grin

RahRahRasputin Wed 14-May-14 17:30:06

I have a pale blue but can't work out if it is duck egg blue or not. I googled duck egg blue and lots of different colours came up. It is similar to this, is that okay?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-May-14 06:53:45

That looks lovely Rah. X

OwlCapone Thu 15-May-14 07:00:06

I have the light grey green from Drops. It's a lovely colour but I can't decide if it's OK or not.

RahRahRasputin Thu 15-May-14 13:45:44

Thank you Pistey I shall crack on with the knitting after my last exam, on Monday!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-May-14 22:26:32

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-May-14 22:27:31

Good luck Rah. X

OwlCapone Fri 16-May-14 07:32:44

I keep looking at it and thinking "is it green? Is it Duck Egg?"

I have plenty of other colours so it's not a problem smile

KnottyLocks Fri 16-May-14 11:31:25

You called? smile

I would say that it is more green than duck egg, but fits into our 'lighter green' box , so can be used.

OwlCapone Fri 16-May-14 12:33:17

Fabulous. I had it earmarked for the background to Rapunzel but was dithering!

RahRahRasputin Fri 16-May-14 12:56:05

Thank you smile I'm taking a break from revision as had exam this morning so I'm going to start my second square now.

crazykat Fri 16-May-14 12:56:07

My squares have gone in the post this morning.

CakeyCakeyCakey Fri 16-May-14 13:42:24

Ive done two grannies, have plans for one more before I post but they're honestly the best crochet I've ever done.
They're not up to the standard of many here but I'm so proud.
They're going to a very deserving home but I might still cry when I put them in the envelope!

PastaandCheese Fri 16-May-14 14:14:57

I posted mine on Tuesday x

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-May-14 20:06:58

Apologies, was out this am when Posty came, so red card of doom, three parcels waiting. And I'm even more sorry as it will be Monday before I can retrieve them. So if you were expecting something to arrive, it nearly has. Thank you

Hi Knotty & Pistey,
I've crocheted a granny square, 6" in ivory. Is this the type of thing that you want?
If you could let me know if it's ok, I'll do some more.

YellowStripe Sat 24-May-14 17:01:07

Hi, Pistey, have PM'd you.

KnottyLocks Sat 24-May-14 23:39:40

Hello, lovely Frances!

Looks good from here. thanks

Jacksmania Sun 25-May-14 05:51:03

Flowers and leaves done for my square. Too tired to sew them on tonight, will do it tomorrow and hopefully post Monday or Tuesday.

PastaandCheese Sun 25-May-14 07:58:42

How annoying. They seem to take everything to the post office now.

My neighbour greatly misses taking my Royal Mail parcels in. She's told me before she takes the parcels for the street (only 7 houses luckily) and likes to feel useful.....!

Fortunately for her I have plenty of clothes, shoes and children's clothes- household essentials that arrive by courier.

CakeyCakeyCakey Sun 25-May-14 20:46:20

Oh well bugger, I just found a parcel down the back of the sofa which should've been posted!
Ugh I'm not organised at all at the moment, my crochet addiction is taking over!

crazykat Sun 25-May-14 23:19:50

Glad they're okay.

Yes it is Chinese waves. I've never tried it before and I love how it looks.

PurpleFrog Mon 26-May-14 14:43:55

Is Stylecraft "Sunshine" too bright for the Chernobyl squares? Got loads left after squeezing in an Aston Villa snuggly blanket for DGS smile On the chart it looks almost as bright as Jaffa :/ x

CakeyCakeyCakey Thu 29-May-14 15:22:56

Just as an aside titsalinabumsquash you have the best name ever! I smile every time you post!
Not in a stalkerish way just when I notice.

KnottyLocks Sun 01-Jun-14 21:29:59

Sunshine is indeed YELLOW!

Have you got something you could mix it up with?

RahRahRasputin Sun 01-Jun-14 21:44:35

Hmph. Just looked at the square I made and it's not duck egg blue at all, just pale blue. My orange duvet at uni seems to make everything more yellowy sad I will post it anyway as hopefully it can be used on one of the other blankets. I've done a cream one which should be OK for cathpip's blanket smile I'm planning to post them tomorrow.

KnottyLocks Sun 01-Jun-14 22:08:31

Rah, yes post it. There will be variations on duck egg - it'll probably be quite happy snuggled in with the others smile

MrsPennyapple Thu 05-Jun-14 15:09:54

I've posted off my squares this morning, but haven't really been keeping up with the thread, and have just seen that laciness is banned - in which case, one of my squares might not be suitable. Sorry about that. I hope it can be used in another project.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 05-Jun-14 15:12:57

Oi! No apologies! Laciness itself isn't banned, it is just that there are some beautiful designs, crochet and knit that are actually more air than wool, and they don't really have the strength to be incorporated into a blanket like this. So please don't fret yet, we'll have a looky.

Thank you thanks

MrsPennyapple Thu 05-Jun-14 16:02:04

Oh ok, that's good. It's not super-delicate, and it does have a wide, solid border around the outside. If it ends up going to a different project I'm not bothered, they're all good smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 05-Jun-14 19:07:36

Sounds fab thanks

They arrived! I'm so pleased.

Cathpip, if you read this - I really did think of you all with every stitch (apart from the ones when I had to keep count). My heart goes out to you all.

Is there a last posting date for these squares yet? I'm afraid I'm a bit behind on this and my Chernobyl squares. I made a jumper for DS2 (the first item of clothing I've ever managed), held it up to admire my handiwork and realised that I'd sewn the hood on backwards. I had to put down all crocheting and walk away for a few days, as I was a bit demoralised.

I promise that there will be a package on its way soon though.

ChronicChronicles Fri 06-Jun-14 18:31:41

Is it too late to make a donation? I can't help with the squares, but would like to contribute in this way.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 07-Jun-14 07:08:57

Not too late at all my lovely, thank you so much, just coming to pm you now.

Last posting for squares is Saturday 14th June tis the same as for Chernobyl.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 07-Jun-14 07:11:24

Just posted my square yesterday - been hectic Chez Jack but it was promised to arrive Tuesday the 17th at the latest so should be ok?

Pistey - Yes the card was meant for Cathpip. Did I not write it on there then? I remember thinking about it but obviously I didn't get as far as actually doing it. Clearly, senility is setting in. blush

If you could send it her way when the time comes that would be lovely. Thank you. flowers

Late, obviously. This evening I need to make a plain square to sew it onto.

RainDancer Mon 16-Jun-14 11:04:06
