Very sad news I’m afraid. Our lovely DutchOma’s husband Bob died last week on January 6th, after a long illness. We knew he’d been very poorly, but always had hope. Such a sad loss for her, their children, grandchildren, family and friends. Bless them all. They had been married for nearly 43 years. There has been no separate thread, Oma is being supported by friends on the Christian prayer thread here but please do feel free to use this thread to post condolences. She and her family are in our hearts and thoughts, and we send them love.

Oma has supported and encouraged so many Mumsnetters over the years, including us more than she may realise, and has been such a long term staunch supporter of the blanket making projects on Mumsnet, so we were so pleased when she accepted our offer of a Woolly Hug. We will make it with love for her, as a tribute to her beloved Bob, and a celebration of a joint life filled with love.

So we need crocheters, knitters and donors. Can you help us? Please post on this thread, but also PM me ( RatherBeOnThePiste ) with your offers of help so we know where we are. Thank you.

If you would like to donate wool or funds, I can match you up. If you would like to join in but need donated wool, I can help there too.

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

Knotty ( KnottyLocks ) is here to help with any crafting queries. All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts. Squares to be 6 inches, using 4mm hook or needles. Please do PM Knotty if you need help.

The Yarn we are Using….
* Artesano Superwash Merino DK
* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (discontinued but some still around)
* Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
* Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
* James Brett Pure Merino DK (also discontinued, some still to be had)
* Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
* Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear.

The colours we are using...
A rich, dark palette of blues, greens, purples, plums.

Suggestions for motifs/designs
* Bob loved Holland so we are thinking tulips to celebrate this, we have a beautiful tulip field design for Team Knit if anyone would like this, please email us on admin@woollyhugs.com (Thanks to PracticallyPerfectNot)
* We have initials, do PM if you are thinking this might be for you.
* Can anyone find a ball of wool and knitting needle design?
* Religious motifs, for example angels would be perfect.

Do use the crafting guide on the website to help you with lots of practical info such as help with buying colours, recommended online retailers and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for patterns.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs/@MNWoollyHugs which are both good ways to keep in touch.

This means so much to Oma, thank you so much for joining with us

Pistey and Knotty

I'm a very new knitter but I'd love to donate a square if you'll have me? I can only do plain ones if you tell me the size I need to do and a guide to roughly how many stitches/rows/needle size would be great.

I understand if you'd prefer an experienced knitter though! smile

KnottyLocks Tue 14-Jan-14 16:17:32

All crafters are welcome smile It's the thought and effort that goes into these squares that makes them special.

KnottyLocks Tue 14-Jan-14 16:18:42

For a 6 inch square in garter stitch , we advise casting on 33- 35 stitches using 4mm needles.

minniebar Tue 14-Jan-14 16:20:21

43 years, wow.

Do count me in.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 14-Jan-14 16:21:22

Just here as me now hopefully to make PMing easier.

Please PM me with your offers of help so we know where we are. Thank you.

If you would like to donate wool or funds, I can match you up. If you would like to join in but need donated wool, I can help there too.

minniebar Tue 14-Jan-14 16:33:36

Oh that's gorgeous. Is it ok to use brighter/lighter colours for the flowers like in that square? I've found a couple of patterns on Rav that look good but would need a bit of contrast to work.

Will PM you Pistey.

Mouseface Tue 14-Jan-14 16:34:10

KnottyLocks Tue 14-Jan-14 16:43:19

Son sorry for DutchOma.

Would love to contribute if you can match me up with a donor.

Can crochet squares and motifs

PurpleCrazyHorse Tue 14-Jan-14 17:21:52

Is there a deadline for squares? I need to purchase yarn and I'm a slow (beginner) knitter

So sad to see another blanket is required.

HorsesDogsNails Tue 14-Jan-14 17:35:41

So sorry for Oma's loss.

I'm in for a couple of squares, they'll be plain crocheted grannies.

KnottyLocks Tue 14-Jan-14 17:43:43

We normally allow 3-4 weeks for these projects, to give folks time to get wool then craft.

We'll set a deadline once we know that most crafters have their wool.

MOSagain Tue 14-Jan-14 18:00:16

So sorry another blanket needed. Sending love and prayers. Count me in, will pm x

rubycon Tue 14-Jan-14 18:12:50

As a completely impractical person can I just say how lovely it is to know that you will be wrapped up in the warmth and comfort of a MN WoollyHug.

Woolly Hugs is one of the loveliest things on Mumsnet (IMHO) - the tulips especially look so beautiful thanks

So sorry to read this x

Just pm'd you Pistey.

niminypiminy Tue 14-Jan-14 18:40:37

Trumpton Tue 14-Jan-14 18:47:27

Merlioness Tue 14-Jan-14 19:12:47

Would love to contribute. I'm a crocheter

Jacksmania Tue 14-Jan-14 19:12:56

I'm in. Would any other flowers do? I've gotten pretty good at leaves, could have a go at a tulip, but could do other flowers more quickly.

Mintyy Tue 14-Jan-14 19:13:42

It will be my privilege to knit a square for DutchOma's blanket. Am truly sorry that it is needed. I have dark blue and dark pink wool, hope that will be ok.

KnottyLocks Tue 14-Jan-14 19:15:19

Jacks, other flowers and leaves would be lovely too. Thanks.

Merlioness Tue 14-Jan-14 19:15:26

Thank you lovely Ophelia, we have some initials if you'd take some of them on?

Just PMed,

So sorry for DutchOma thanks

ThistledownAndCobweb Tue 14-Jan-14 20:21:27

I'll make some squares, I may have some suitable yarn, if not I'll get some tomorrow.

Can someone just remind me what size crochet hook to use for squares please.

Thoughts and best wishes to DutchOma, I'm a crocheter, not a knitter but I've often seen her give generously with advice and support to others

Opheliabumps Tue 14-Jan-14 20:29:35

Pistey of course I'l do initials, just pm me what you'd like. I'm wondering if I could do the initials with a tulip border, so can i have the tulip field pattern as well please?

I'm looking for a yarn and needles motif, will let you know if I find one.

I have some wool from before but i don't know where it is.
i'll find it and tell you the colours.
are ee doing the softe softe wool again?

right, i've got pale pale silver/grey -definitely enough to make a square. I've got bright blue, very pale blue, mmoss green- all enough for partial square.

may I please use my silver to makee a waffle cross?
it wouldn't work with two colours.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 14-Jan-14 20:46:32

ThistledownAndCobweb A size 4 hook please

Thanks everyone. Just about to come to PMs

HoggyTruffle Tue 14-Jan-14 20:48:04

purple would be good, because she sang in our choir when she came to visit and our robes are purple smile

Looking at the colours I have, I could do a cream square, with a darkish red or purple square on it - would that be OK?

needasilverlining Tue 14-Jan-14 21:20:35

Pistey, I'd like to offer a couple of crochet squares if there's any donor wool going? Will PM you.

Weegiemum Tue 14-Jan-14 21:56:05

I'm one of the prayer thread folk - I have a difficult neurological disease but am just finishing off my project #1 for my friends grandson.

I'll knit a square for Oma - she knitted bedsocks for my dh and dd2 - dd2 might also knit a square (though it might well be amateur!!)

I would love it if you could send me some yarn, Pistey - the red I have is the one you sent me for the last blanket, if that's OK.

KnottyAndPistey Tue 14-Jan-14 22:14:05

Isn't she such a kind soul Weegie? Bless her heart, so glad we can all do something for her now.

JulesJules Fri 17-Jan-14 05:25:09

Morning Pistey brew

Jacksmania Fri 17-Jan-14 06:35:40

It's good night from me (10:30 pm here). I'm going to keep DS home from school tomorrow, he needs a duvet day. He asked me this morning, "Mummy, can we stay in bed all morning, and watch TV, and read books, and you can work on my blanket (I'm making him a Granny Bobble Spiral blanket) and anything else you need to crochet... and then, Mummy, when we get up, can we bake a cake?"

Sounds like the perfect day to me. smile

Jacksmania Fri 17-Jan-14 06:37:06

The upshot of which is that I should be able to get at least one flower square done tomorrow.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 17-Jan-14 09:49:54

Morning smile Jules

Sounds lovely Jacks

Just going into OP mode to make some thank yous stand out, stand by smile

Mintyy Fri 17-Jan-14 10:01:44

Quick question for the knitters if I may: I am doing a navy square in moss stitch. Do I start off with a row of plain knitting, or do I start plaining and purling right from the very first row?

Tia brew.

tribpot Fri 17-Jan-14 10:18:15

You can start in moss stitch from the beginning, Mintyy, unless those making the blankets up have a preference for a few rows of garter first?

If this is your first go at moss, however, be warned it can be slow going. Looks lovely though!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 17-Jan-14 10:31:44

Not at all trib, very much as folk want to make is lovely for us thanks

Thank you Mintyy, we love moss stitch tis super snuggly

Mintyy Fri 17-Jan-14 10:38:50

Yes, I know moss stitch is a pita but I love the look of it. And its for dutchoma, so I don't mind it taking a long time. Will probably only be a single square though wink.

Allalonenow Fri 17-Jan-14 10:39:56

Thank you for the tulip field pattern, but I think I will leave that to the lovely more-skilled-than-me knitters here.
I've got some Mulberry shade I can use to be getting on with a square.

But, I've seen a super variegated wool, Debbie Bliss DK Rialto Print ~ Ravenna (005) is greens and blues, but also has a little bit of pale green,
Verona (003) is blues and purples but has a little bit of deep pink.
Would you have time to have a quick look at them to see if either of them would be suitable?
On a small piece of work the pale green, or deep pink, might not be included anyway, or could be avoided, and I thought the other shades would be a nice combination of the colours.

KnottyAndPistey Fri 17-Jan-14 10:40:18

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

We have some more lovely donors to thank, what stars you are, huge thanks for your generosity and thoughtfulness. You really are awesome thanks

Thank you,

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

Trumpton Fri 17-Jan-14 19:21:51

Umm not quite started finished yet !

HairyPotter Fri 17-Jan-14 19:55:57

Yay! Hugely chuffed not be posting them at the last gasp as usual. grin

Also v pleased that my first crochet square hasn't fallen apart in transit.

My first attempt at this pattern. Can't get the photo the right way round.

KnottyLocks Fri 17-Jan-14 22:41:34

Ooo such speedy woolly loveliness! Huge thanks thanks

<whispers> Trumpton, you are ahead of me there x

Mhw02 Fri 17-Jan-14 23:03:26

Started on my first (knitted) square tonight. Couldn't find the pattern I wanted so made up my own chart last night, which I've never done before. The square fortunately seems to be at least vaguely resembling the chart I designed, if a slightly wobbly version of it.

Weegiemum Fri 17-Jan-14 23:08:45

Well I've cast on my dark purple moss-stitch square! Was just finishing a small blanket for a friends 11-week prem grandson, and can't find my big needle to stitch it up (or be bothered digging out the - you do call it an "iron" - don't you?) so have cast on Oma's square. Dd2 was off school (vomiting) today and knitted some very bright pink rows as practice - not sure she's going to be up to do this one (though Oma is her friend who knitted her bedsocks!) but hopefully she'll improve!

Allalonenow Fri 17-Jan-14 23:20:24

SDTG Gosh, thats so clever, is the flower done alone then added, or is it all knitted as one piece? However you have done it, it is lovely!

Oooh - I could say it is all knitted as one, and you'd all be amazed at how clever I am - but I won't lie I was tempted, mind. I knitted the square, and then knitted 8 petals and appliquéd them on (actually, the pattern is for a leaf).

Allalonenow Sat 18-Jan-14 00:09:16

Well, I'm still amazed at how clever you are, as Pistey would say [star] grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 18-Jan-14 07:10:34

So sorry to hear this, condolences to DutchOma and family.

I can knit just as erratically as I have previously crocheted, Pistey, so will PM you.

so sorry for your loss dutchoma

bit late to this, just off to pm pistey

Pistey Just about to order my yarn. Any suggestions as to shade, please? So much choice...

<<flexes credit card, hides stash from DH>>

PurpleCrazyHorse Sat 18-Jan-14 20:21:23

Yarn order has arrived, needles at the ready and YouTube paused.... here I go...!

Sorry, it'll be a basic 6" square (beginner alert) but I hope the plainness of it will set off all the other fancy squares. Might have time to rustle up a crochet square too if I can get two out of a ball.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 19-Jan-14 10:03:25

Morning smile brew

Thank you lovely Pag You're a Hugger now, this is teamwork at its finest, you are wonderful too! thanks

Huge thanks to those recently joining us, we are so glad to have you on board, will just be away to PMs in a mo, first some heartfelt thanks...

We have some more lovely donors to thank. Either your woolly wool has arrived safely with your crafter, or funds with us. Either way we truly are enormously grateful. Bless you.

Lovely Woolly I suspect you have already chosen? Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

And good luck Purple but oi! No apologies needed!! Please do remember squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts.

As Knotty would say, simple squares are good, simple squares are essential. Tis true!

Let us know how you get on

Right. PMs, here I come.... brew

RandomMess Sun 19-Jan-14 10:12:48

Have send you a pm. Thanks for your hard work.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 19-Jan-14 10:27:13

Thanks lovely, have replied thanks

Pagwatch Sun 19-Jan-14 10:58:25

Oooh I'm a hugger!

Thank you x

I have some plain squares I promised you ages ago (really sorry) going in the post tomorrow. Two apple green ones if you need them for Oma's blanket and a silver one for any future project.

I've also started crocheting and finished my first square today. Will send it if it's of any use to you but wondering if it needs to be more solid and er straighter? It does stretch out to 6" but is a little wonky as you can see blush.

Weegiemum Sun 19-Jan-14 13:47:58

Finished my first square, it's not really neat but I'm rather pleased with it! I have enough wool for one more.

Weegiemum Sun 19-Jan-14 13:48:53

So where do I send it? Can someone pm me the address?

hi pistey, I haven't got a pm, worried it's playing up as I've had problems with it recently smile

DutchOma - so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear Bobsad

I've pm'd you Pistey. I'll be making a square for our lovely DutchOma - who helped me out with a query, years ago when I first started smile

Weegiemum Sun 19-Jan-14 20:04:03

I've done another one today (dc all unwell so not much else to do!). Thanks for the pm, will post them at the start of the week (depending on vomit quantity!)

Evening all smile

Fabulous creations [star]

Thanks to you all thanks

KnottyLocks Sun 19-Jan-14 22:18:23

Allalonenow, apologies for not answering your question earlier.
I think perhaps we need to avoid the variegated wools iyswim, as if we add just a square or 2 of the multicoloured it may 'pop' too much. Nice wool though! smile

Allalonenow Sun 19-Jan-14 23:14:47

grin Kotty Thanks for answering. Just moments before reading you post I had placed an order for some plain purple, as I was panicking that I didn't have any wool!! It should come by Tuesday, so I'm not too far behind smile

MNPinto2014 Sun 19-Jan-14 23:25:05

Thinking of you DutchOma.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 06:07:31

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 06:55:35

My DD goes to the gym very (very very, sigh) early on a Monday and as she left I found woolly treasure on my doormat! THANK YOU!

thanks NoWayNoHow Two gorgeous knits, one green heart design and a lovely textured purple sort of rib. Really beautiful. [star]

Folk are asking about a deadline, I don't think we are quite ready to set one yet, we've had quite a few folk join us over the weekend, one more already this morning. Oma means so much to so many, folk are very keen to show their love and support for her, and several are learning to knit and crochet just for this. Just fabulous. But any deadline will still be 3+ weeks away.

Thanks to the fabulous donors, will be posting more wool to crafters this afternoon. thanks

nickel Wool is def on the way, a gorgeous purple, was posted 2nd class last week, fingers crossed it comes today.

Right best go and crack on.

Dutchoma Mon 20-Jan-14 07:55:06

BIWI I couldn't be more pleased, I really couldn't.

thanks Pistey, much appreciated smile

Weegiemum Mon 20-Jan-14 11:13:48

Thistle it's a Debbie Bliss DK but I can't remember the colour, sorry!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 13:16:46

There a lovely DB Rialto mulberry it could be. Then again it could be something else. smile

PMs. I'm on my way. thanks

MasterFlea Mon 20-Jan-14 13:34:48

Thinking of you DutchOma. thanks

Will pm you Pistey and get out my hook.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 13:47:53

Thanks lovely, have just replied, hopefully. PMs were messing around a bit so not 100% sure. Your blue sounds great, thank you SO much

Have posted mine back this morning.

nickelbabe Mon 20-Jan-14 14:11:22

are they really learning to knit or crochet just for Oma? oh that's lovely. I'm not even going to pretend there's something in my eye, it's actually made me well-up.
Oma has touched so many people, and we're all with her during this very tough time.

I've received my wool and I'm already 1/3 of the way through my square- it already looks in relief, so I think it'll work grin
thanks pistey sfk thanks

Pagwatch Mon 20-Jan-14 14:22:13

I went out this morning and bought wool and a hook and I am sitting here with YouTube trying to figure it out.
I haven't committed to sending a square because I may be shit at this. But I'm going to have a go, even if it's so I can perhaps send something another time.
If you don't hear from me I have knotted my fingers together and can't type [grin ]

Good luck Pag!

Having knitted on and off for years I was totally bemused by crochet at first and convinced it was 90% witchcraft but then there's suddenly that moment when it just clicks.

You Tube is fab. What are you aiming for? IMO granny squares are much easier to learn on vs rows.

Come back and shout if we can help you can type with your nose right? smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 15:50:55

Oh Pag you star! Good luck and if we don't hear from you for a day or so, I'll send the St Bernard. wine

Catherine Hirst on YouTube is very good. She taught me, I luffs her and she is very patient. grin

KnottyLocks Mon 20-Jan-14 16:25:29

Oh Pag, you little well-tailored treasure smile

GoingGoingGoth Mon 20-Jan-14 16:30:39

Squares just finished, so will post tomorrow.

PastaandCheese Mon 20-Jan-14 16:30:55

That is very sad news and I am very sorry for Dutchoma and her family.

I can make some squares. I will PM Pistey.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 20-Jan-14 16:41:15

Thanks GGG and thank you Pasta - have just replied thanks

www.littletinbird.co.uk/free-crochet-tutorials/basic-granny-square-pattern/ this granny tutorial is brilliant! I can now crochet, but not entirely convinced there isn't some witchcraft involved.

Pistey, parcel posted to you on Saturday, but sent from deepest darkest Coastal Scotland, so not collected until today. Very first crochet WH square in it

MasterFlea Mon 20-Jan-14 18:14:13

I got your PM Pistey so all working well there.

I second the Catherine Hirst videos. She taught me how to crochet last year. And I was a dreadful knitter when I was a child so was very sceptical about my being able to learn to crochet.

Woolly goodness arrived with me today pistey, I shall get cracking. Thanks lovely xx

doing a practice square with some leftover wool I had from baby jumper. It's 39 stitches wide, is that ok?

Mhw02 Mon 20-Jan-14 20:43:27

Have finished one knitted square - if the colours aren't okay I can use it for something else, it just seemed right to knit a cross in that colour.

Have found a lovely pattern for a crochet tulip square, so will start on that and hopefully post both squares at the weekend.

PurpleCrazyHorse Mon 20-Jan-14 22:04:47

First square nearly finished, a bit slow going and a fair few false starts but wanted it to be a good as I could for DutchOma. I'm loving the Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in mulberry, it's a gorgeous colour so hoping it goes with everyone else's!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 21-Jan-14 07:31:07

The mulberry is gorgeous, funnily enough was admiring it yesterday and it has now gone on to a crafter, so there is definitely more mulberry in Oma's blanket.

Mhw02 - tis just beautiful, thank you thanks

Good news Pig

Blue Tension varies so much between folk, how wide does that measure? A little under 6 inches is better than over. Hopefully your wool will arrive today - let me know if not thanks

Morning everyone and thank you smile brew

nickelbabe Tue 21-Jan-14 17:33:49

I've finished my cross square.
I didn?t have a rule when i started, and it turned out to be 7", so I went in a bit.

I've got some green and some blue, so may I combine with purple on the next one?

KnottyLocks Tue 21-Jan-14 19:46:45

You may smile thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 22-Jan-14 06:41:38

Morning smile brew

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 22-Jan-14 06:46:37

We need the photo option in the Woolly Hugs topic. we don't have it do we?

PurpleCrazyHorse Wed 22-Jan-14 08:21:35

One down and hopefully one more to do. I still have lots of yarn left on the ball so can definitely get another one done. Will try to do it by the end of the weekend and will post early next week. I have a Teddington address from March last year, is that still the right one?

My selvedge edge went a bit wonky half way through when I had to unpick (first time unpicking and I think the stitches went on the needle the wrong way around!). Anyhow, hopefully you can still sew it on okay.

Pagwatch Wed 22-Jan-14 09:47:03

So I have done 3 granny squares.
Two seem to be 6 1/2 inches the other, 5 1/2 inches.
I blame DH for the fact that I clearly have no idea what 6 inches actually looks like.
Plus I came home yesterday to find small dog had hog tied himself with Debbie bliss teal wool.

OwlCapone Wed 22-Jan-14 10:50:25

Here are my two - the blue isn't blue, it's the teal colour from Drops and the border is a deep purple. The red heart is Official Approved Red left over from ladybirds... The Celtic knot work cross I made up [preen]

In awe of your skills OwlCapone
That looks excellent.

<worries that mine isn't started yet>

PurpleCrazyHorse Wed 22-Jan-14 12:15:02

Wow, some stunning squares. I'm trying to find another easy one to do. The blanket will be a real tribute for DutchOma's DH and it's such an honour to participate.

Thinking of you still, DutchOma.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 22-Jan-14 14:41:29

<snort> at Pag I shall stand down the St Bernard, honestly that's just fabulous, marvellissimo!! You're a Hooker now, am so proud! flowers

I would love to send DM a Woolly Hug, will PM you Pistey.

minniebar Wed 22-Jan-14 21:42:16

Wow that Celtic cross is amazing!

I had that 'huh' pattern bookmarked on Rav - great minds and all that. I currently have a leaning towards spirally patterns, might do one of those to go with my flowery one…

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 23-Jan-14 06:03:15

Morning brew

Loved that spiral minnie thanks

Thanks Chipping, and Piggy am away to PMs now. thanks

Sorry, obviously getting carried away with excitement there! I have moved away but I can return another day.... Thrilled to find an old fashioned haberdashery hidden in the corner of a small dept store. Which also stocks Stylecraft grin <happy dance in the post office queue>

Jacksmania Thu 23-Jan-14 15:54:12

Ah, found you all again! Thanks Pistey thanks.

I posted off my squares (purple with flower and dark blue with hearts) on Tuesday. Hopefully they'll arrive soon!

I forgot to put a note in, but I expect it'll be the only bubble mailer with squares from Canada grin

I've one tulip square done, very proud of it if I say so myself :D
Will do a lacy cross too and see what else takes my fancy

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 23-Jan-14 16:45:57

Yes watching! Step away! Well for this project at least! I bloody love old fashioned haberdashery shops/depts, how fabulous, fabulous too the stylecraft find.

Wow, I am a branch! How cool is that grin

PurpleFrog Thu 23-Jan-14 20:43:43

I am late in finding this, but I would like to do a couple of squares for this blanket as well. I have dug out my DB Cashmerino DK and have a couple of dark blues and purples that fit the bill. Would Apple Green be too light for the background of a square? I have an idea...

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-Jan-14 05:16:26

Lovely Purple Thank you, apple is fine.

Morning brew

Woolfey Fri 24-Jan-14 10:49:41

DD2 has just gotten hold of my knitting sad
I'm not really a knitter and it takes me aaaaages to do a simple square. Crochet is my thing and I only knit some squares as it's better to embroider on.

Pistey, please tell me the deadline is ages away as I'm going to have to start the square again (as I can't work out how to pick up dropped stitches and fix it even with the help of youtube and a knitting book).

1 pointy stick is so much better than 2!!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-Jan-14 19:43:29

Ah, bless her, but oh bugger.

But fret not on deadlines, tis aaaaaaaaaaaages away my lovely.

As a little bit of an on-looker (too impractical to knit squares, too broke to donate ATM), but also a friend of DutchOma's from the Christian prayer thread (I'm a Quaker myself) can I just say how lovely it is to see all the finished squares now we can post pictures thanks It's very moving to see x

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-Jan-14 21:23:41

Thank you Juggling thanks

A lovely parcel of woolly treasure arrived today, huge thanks, just gorgeous thanks

thanks RiaOverTheRainbow Lovely Ria has done one set of initials, knitted in a deep gorgeous green. Just fabulous, and an amazing tulip knit. Super [star]

Thank you. thanks

The deadline for last posting for squares for Oma's blanket is to be Saturday 22nd February

Hopefully that will give everyone including those joining us at this point plenty of crafting time.

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

Just started on a square and after a few rows decided to measure. It's 14.5 cms wide. Is that ok or should I start again and do a few more stitches? I casted on 35...

KnottyLocks Fri 24-Jan-14 23:31:47

Right, I need to do a quick metric to imperial conversion....

AthelstaneTheUnready Fri 24-Jan-14 23:45:14

I've done a sort of raised cross so far, but Pistey, it isn't half going to need some blocking blush, sorry...

KnottyLocks Fri 24-Jan-14 23:49:14

Bluetinkerbell, that is smashing...keep going! X

KnottyLocks Fri 24-Jan-14 23:50:52

Athel, no.worries, we'll sort it this end.

KnottyLocks Fri 24-Jan-14 23:52:10

This kindle is lacking in punctuation skills <grrr>

OwlCapone Sat 25-Jan-14 09:55:19

I posted mine yesterday.

I had to block the heart one but I did it with steam and it hasn't had any adverse affect to the edge stitches wrt putting it together, it's just flattened it out nicely. I just pinned it on the ironing board and hovered the steam iron over it for less than a minute - worked a treat.

Mhw02 Sat 25-Jan-14 17:16:51

Just finished square number two. The crochet square I was going to do was exactly the same as the one PigOfHappiness posted upthread, so I made another knitted square instead. I had to put some knots in the back to secure the ends as the back is so crowded with a cross-cross of strands that I had trouble finding the stitches to sew the ends in. Hope that's okay!

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 21:45:56

itook my

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 21:46:16

I took my crochet

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 21:47:47

I took my crochet to to the memorial service today.
but I didn't get a chance to show it grin

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 21:50:26

14.5cm is about 5 &3/4"

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 21:52:27

ooh, no please don't block the pieces! even.if you think it needs it! the compilers will make sure they all fit and they can't do that if they're blocked! sad

OwlCapone Sat 25-Jan-14 22:42:54

That depends what you do to them.

nickelbabe Sat 25-Jan-14 22:49:16

it's fine if you're doing your own blanket, but we've always been asked not to block woolly hugs squares.

don't panic, though, I'm sure they'll be able to cope with it smile

ZingSweetApple Sat 25-Jan-14 22:53:10

I'm happy to sponsor the wool needed to join the squares (as before) - please let me know if it's needed.

what is the time frame? (bit short on cash now, but can send cheque end of Feb - is that too late?)

KnottyLocks Sat 25-Jan-14 23:15:22

're blocking, we ask that you don't as unblocked squares allow for a tad more wiggleability. Six inch squares seem to vary a bit smile

KnottyLocks Sat 25-Jan-14 23:16:31

But panic not if you have blocked them.... crochet is a dark art wink

KnottyLocks Sat 25-Jan-14 23:21:15

Pm heading your way, Zing.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 26-Jan-14 08:16:12

ThistledownAndCobweb Tue 28-Jan-14 17:10:18

Sorry, he has offered to post them tomorrow so they should be with you in plenty of time

No apologies needed!! Thank you so much Thistle

Thanks Mhw too.

Thumbwitch Wed 29-Jan-14 13:50:53

Wool ordered! Hopefully will be there very soon. One purple, one green ball (sounds vaguely unpleasant, as though someone had been punched in a vulnerable area!)
Hope "my" crafter can do something wonderful with them, I'm sure she will. smile

Mintyy Wed 29-Jan-14 20:34:18

Opheliabumps Thu 30-Jan-14 22:36:08

Argh, huggers I need your help!

Does anyone have a little bit of what I'm pretty sure is the Sublime woolly wool in Teal, tis a lovely rich deep teal colour anyway.

I've run out with just a few rows to go, so if anyone has a spare few metres they can send me that would be marvellous, thanks!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 31-Jan-14 07:21:30

Morning all smile brew

First read that as buggers....

Ahhhh what a pain Ophelia I'm sure we can help! Is it the teal you used for the initials for the Little Hug that time?

Apologies, got home to a red card of doom, think there are a few parcels at the sorting office. I will be able to go later on this morning, so if you were expecting to see woolly arrivals, watch out later today smile

MasterFlea Fri 31-Jan-14 11:57:25

I posted mine last Friday. They should be arriving shortly.

Opheliabumps Fri 31-Jan-14 12:13:13

Pistey that's exactly the one, I thought it fitted the colour brief perfectly for Oma's blanket as well. You could just have saved me from starting my last square again from scratch - thank you grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 31-Jan-14 13:39:50

Aha! Funnily enough, have that Little Hug out right now, so have just checked it's the same, and BINGO grin

Tis a Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, sadly discontinued. I am putting some in a normal envelope, if you need more just shout. Am off to the PO right now.

PandaG Tue 04-Feb-14 19:59:19

well, I've crocheted 2 squares, my first ever. They are a bit wonky, but I am cheered to read upthread that a crochetted border is very forgiving!

Only taught myself to crochet since Christmas. Been fab to have something to do in the evenings while grieving myself. Run out of the right wool now, so about to attempt a hat in something cheaper!

PastaandCheese Tue 04-Feb-14 20:59:25

I'm done! Will PM to check posting details.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 05-Feb-14 07:56:58

ZingSweetApple Thu 06-Feb-14 17:58:24

I'm hoping it will be going towards "sewing" the squares together and edging wool - do let me know, please, if it's not enough to cover the cost for that.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 06-Feb-14 18:32:27

Yes. Thank you Zing it has been set aside for that. Bless you.

JulesJules Fri 07-Feb-14 15:02:10

PastaandCheese Sun 09-Feb-14 06:41:12

nickelbabe Sun 09-Feb-14 14:39:06

I'm just reposting the final posting date.

*Squares have to be posted by 22nd February*More to remind myself than anyone else grin

I am doing another square, which I hopes would be stripey, but I messed it up so I'm doing a coloured granny instead.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 11-Feb-14 05:52:55

Morning smile

Thanks thanks

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 06:00:19

I have a thought. Can this board be changed so that we can include photos in the posts? and then people can see the lovely squares, and know what they're crafter has done (if the crafters want to stay anonymous then it would be down to Pistey and/or Knotty to post the pics though, if that's all right?)

If you like the idea, I'll report my post to MNHQ and see what they say; if you hate the idea, of course I'll leave it. smile

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 06:01:08

OH jeez - not "they're" - THEIR. [morto]
I know it doesn't matter IN THE SLIGHTEST to anyone else, but it does to me! blush

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 11-Feb-14 06:03:57

OK, ignore me then. smile

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 06:17:20

Oh yes! That was after I joined the thread.

OK then - can we see more pics please? Pretty please with little stars on? thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 11-Feb-14 06:19:06

We did Allalone while this thread was in Chat, now it's been moved to Woolly Hugs we don't.

Cross posts with Thumb, we'd love to have the photo facility in WH for crafters to upload photos of their woolly treasure, that would be loverly and was well used when we were still in Chat

Allalonenow Tue 11-Feb-14 06:23:09

Oh sorry, I didn't know it has been changed, sorry to confuse you Thumbwitch thanks

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 06:25:37

Ahhhh - all becomes clear! in which case I will report my post and see if MNHQ can come up with the necessary smile

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 06:28:34

OK, done - let's see what happens! smile

Thumbwitch Tue 11-Feb-14 14:42:28

Oh oh oh - I have seen the squares that my crafter did - thank you so much! They are absolutely gorgeous and I am overwhelmed by your skill and artistry, they're beautiful thanks[star]thanks

And thank you to (I hope) Pistey for showing me the photos (shoot me now if I have the wrong one of you!) thanks

awwww, bless em smile

Morning all brew

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 13-Feb-14 08:38:51

Morning Pistey! smile Hope you have a lovely day.

So can I ask, is it you and knottylocks who compile the quilts, and do you have any extra help? Tis a lovely thing that you do! I am sure I am not the only one who would like some insights into how to put a woolly hug together when tensions vary square to square and 6" means something different to everyone (fnar fnar) (oh dear, that ages me!)

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 13-Feb-14 08:58:42

Hello there lovely smile

That's very kind thank you, we will have a think, bless you. Yes tis Knotty and I who compile the Hugs, there is something very special about bringing a Hug together. All that love, care and compassion coming into one, you can honestly feel it. Such an honour and privilege to be able to do this.

A while ago, Knotty wrote this about how a Hug comes together for our website, the blanket it shows was the one we made for Wubbly, a beautiful Mumsnetter who died from breast cancer almost two years ago, leaving her DH and young son. sad

The key to compiling a WH is crochet as there is such good flexibility, and 'wiggleability' a term invented by Knots. I work in exactly the same way as she has described in that piece. When I'm attaching two squares, I do pin them to make sure the variations of 6" square smile match exactly, before crocheting. I have no idea if Knotty does that, I often think she has more hands than I do, so probably not!

ZingSweetApple Thu 13-Feb-14 08:58:59

Pistey & Knotty

yego is right, what an enormous thing you two do, organising and co-ordinating it all and putting in crazy amount of hours no doubt (at night if anything like mewink ) so you are absolute stars, definitely and you are amazing!
THANK YOU BOTH!thanks thanks

[star] & [star]

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 13-Feb-14 10:01:54

Thank you Pistey! I had read that page on the WH site but the actual technicalities seemed shrouded in mystery! Pins! Ah ha! :D

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 13-Feb-14 20:13:59

Thanks Zing

I posted my squares first class Wednesday, I didn't have the chance to include a card for Oma, we've had one drama after another here! However 4 squares are coming your way, I have also included the leftovers of the 2 balls of wool I used incase they're of any use or incase I've done the squares really wrong

Allalonenow Fri 14-Feb-14 16:36:21

Hello, I'm sewing my ends in just now, so would you send me the address for posting please?
Thank you!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 15-Feb-14 07:48:21

OK, MN went terribly wonky after I wrote that post, Allalone I am hoping it will behave now, here I come

Morning all smile

Dutchoma Sat 15-Feb-14 08:12:48

You know what? I am already hugging this blanket in my mind, even before the first two squares have been joined together. Reading all your lovely messages makes me cry, but in such a good way.
I'm ok, but it is a very lonely time now that all the visitors have gone, most of the flowers are in the bin and there is a life without Bob stretching ahead. It's a comfort to know that there are people thinking of me . Just wanted to say that smile

Allalonenow Sat 15-Feb-14 08:25:18

Sending you kind thoughts Oma , to help you get through the day.

Thank you Pistey I think MN must have been under a zombie attack last night!

MyArseIsbiggerThanYours Sat 15-Feb-14 08:33:30

DutchOma - I remember MIL and a friend whose wife died saying the same. There is all the hustle, bustle, support, compassion after a loved one dies and then suddenly nothing. Not that everyone forgets but the world keeps turning even though yours feels like it has stopped. I can't wait for the woolly hug to get to you so you can wrap yourself in the love with which it is being made.

On a side note, did you and Bob visit the tulip fields in Holland? I have that on my to do list, the photographs I have seen of it are truly amazing.

(((huge hugs))

Dutchoma Sat 15-Feb-14 08:47:07

MyArse, I'm not sure whether we did or not, I think we might have done. Iirc the best way to see the bulb fields is to take a train from Haarlem to The Hague, you go past all of them and are not stuck in the petrol fumes of all the cars that want to do the same. When you go, you must visit the Keukenhof which is the best way to see the glory of the flowers. Do that by public transport as well, perfectly possible and cheaper than taking one of the organised tours that get advertised in Amsterdam. Unless of course you take a dedicated tour from the UK that takes it all in.

MyArseIsbiggerThanYours Sat 15-Feb-14 09:02:05

Thanks DutchOma! I have put this thread on my watch list so that when I persuade dh to do it we know where to go smile

ZingSweetApple Sat 15-Feb-14 09:06:43

when you do go you must try two things - stroopwafels and komejn kase.
both delicious!
(DH lived in Utrecht for a year so we have loads of Dutch friends, including DS3's godfather)

sorry for derail!

sending you big hugs and strength.
I'll light another candle for Bob in minute

Dutchoma Sat 15-Feb-14 10:47:07

And you need to eat an uitsmijter; this was served at the end of a party (to get rid of the drunk guests, or so the story goes. Uitsmijten means: to throw out) and consists of two slices of bread, some meat or cheese and two fried eggs. Uitsmijter ham, kaas or rosbief (roast beef). A complete meal in itself.

MyArseIsbiggerThanYours Sat 15-Feb-14 11:53:17

Thanks for the tips! I have a Dutch friend who keeps us stocked with schenkstroop - dh and dcs love it on pancakes smile

Dutchoma Sat 15-Feb-14 12:01:52

Have you found the website RealDutchFoods? Such a lot of Dutch delicacies there.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 16-Feb-14 08:53:20

Lovely Oma the hugest hugs from me, thinking of you here, sending so much love Xx

Thumbwitch Sun 16-Feb-14 14:47:45

Just to let you know - I have had a response from MNHQ about my suggestion to allow photos onto this board - it's positive, but says that they will look into it and see if it can be done - don't know when but at least they're looking at it! smile

DutchOma - so sorry that you are now to be a recipient of one of these blankets, or rather I'm sorry for the reason, not for you receiving one.
I hope that you have plenty of local friends with whom you can still spend time - my Dad was widowed (widowered?) in 2007 but he has managed to maintain a fairly healthy social life, unlike my Grandad who pretty much went into seclusion after my Nanna died. (((hugs))) and thanks for you anyway xx

that's really good, hope it will be done soon!

big hugs, life does go quiet after a funeral, sometimes people shy away or just want to give you time.
but we are here for you, you know we always care.

Thanks lovely Thumb we will be hopeful smile

I'm glad you received my squares.

I'd live to do some more for future projects.

Is there a best place to purchase the types of wool you use? I'd be more than happy to buy a bunch in a rainbow of colours so I can knit for any more projects. smile

Thank you so much thanks You may like to have a look at our next project for a lovely MNetter called Critter

We would recommend [http://www.wisebadger.com/knitting-yarns.html?cat=167 Wise Badger]] they sell both the Debbie Bliss Rialto and the Jenny Watson

Our core colours are greens, blues, warm purples, cream (specific ones), silvers, sometimes pink and occasionally red (again specific one)

Thank you so much thanks
