Woolly Hugs : A Blanket for snorris and her family

(271 Posts)
RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 22-Jun-13 13:38:47

We have heard the desperately sad news that snorris' daughter has lost her battle against a congenital heart condition she was just 7 years old. Snorris' thread is here if you would like to add your condolences. She starts it with a different name (accidia) as you will see.

We send snorris love from us all and are so sorry for her loss. She and her family are in our hearts and thoughts X

We have offered to make snorris and her family a Woolly Hug and hope it may give whatever comfort it can to them. We are so pleased that they have accepted.

So once again we are asking for your help thanks

I will co-ordinate and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here to answer any queries you may have. We need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool). If you would like to be involved in any way, please PM me with your offers, crafting, donating, need wool etc

Heartfelt thanks thanks

Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

Do use the crafting guide on our website for help and ideas. Previous blankets can be seen here too. We are on Facebook at MNWoollyHugs and on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. Both are good ways to keep in touch.

When ready for posting, please PM me for info.

So sad that another blanket is needed. Snorris my lovely, we are thinking of you and the girls, your family and friends and sending love X

Trin, why not have a go and see how you get on.

Catherine Hirst on YouTube is easy to follow.

I think a granny square is easier to start with than a horizontal one, but others may think differently.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 22-Jun-13 14:13:17

Trinity Your simple square would be very welcome indeed, it really is the love and thought that counts. Thank you thanks

Mintyy Mon 01-Jul-13 16:34:20

Can I shout out for help from the knitters please?

I am a really slow knitter so would love to avoid having to do a practice square if at all possible. My knitting is always very tight ... perhaps that's why I'm slow! ... can anyone give me their best guess for how many stitches to cast on? I've looked at the crafting guide on the website and 33 has been suggested for the average knitter, so do you think 36 would be good for me?

Thank you in advance smile

is it.just plain knitting you are doing? I'm an Annie average and 33 is perfect for me. if you Grr on the wise of caution a long as it stretches to 6inches you'll be fine. give 36 a go and see where you are after half a dozen rows or so.

apologies for the typing in ony phone in a moving car!

BIWI Mon 01-Jul-13 18:57:39

I do 34, which works out fine for me - and satisfies the OCD need in me for even numbers blush

Mintyy Mon 01-Jul-13 19:16:20

Thank you, thank you. I did a few test rows with 36 and it was too big, so now I've gone down to 34, done 12 rows BUT now need to unpick a row (doing stripes and miscounted). This is bringing me out in a sweat so I've put the knitting down for a bit and am trying to calm down smile.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 02-Jul-13 08:38:38

You all sorted now Mintyy?

Morning smile brew and <beams> at BIWI giving knitting advice. Who'd have thought?

grin

crochet next, tis just a matter of time

Mintyy Tue 02-Jul-13 08:53:53

Biwi is my knitting guru smile.

I haven't unpicked that row, no. Am scared!! Off to work today and will sit calmly with a proper online tutorial tonight.

Am pleased with my wool though, which I bought locally, a sort of dark denimy blue and a mid baby pink. They look nice as stripes.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 02-Jul-13 08:55:47

I'm going to make her a badge.

Sounds gorgeous Mintyy, I love stripes.

Jacksmania Tue 02-Jul-13 13:48:20

Good morning (morning here) smile

wine? or brew?

I'd like to report that my magnolia flower is half done! I'm actually rather proud of myself. It looks just like the picture in the pattern! I'm doing the leaves in cream, the centre in purple and just a teeniest little titch of yellow in the middle. Then I'll sew it to a square of deep pink.
Should be pretty.

But I think I'm only good for one magnolia. This is seriously a ton of work. Granted, the most difficult thing I've so far attempted has been the granny square and little flowers, but wow - I was cursing and mumbling to myself and making DH giggle at me. I might do another square in similar colours but with little round flowers, if that's ok.

I'm sorry if it's been asked already but is there a posting deadline?

BIWI Tue 02-Jul-13 19:16:23

grin
If I'm your guru Mintyy you are truly fucked!!!

BIWI Tue 02-Jul-13 19:17:05

That's a technical term, obviously

Just started my squares.

I feel a very loose knitter at 27 stitches.

TrinityRhino Wed 03-Jul-13 10:55:37

morning. my dd2 would like to ask if she can knit a square for snorris' blanket?

shes 8 and loves to knit.
would it be ok?

if she can she needs to know how many stitches to cast on for a six inch square?

im no good at knitting but I have a lovely neighbour who helps her whenever she needs it.

Jacksmania Wed 03-Jul-13 15:18:59

Oh Trin <sniff>
How lovely is your DD2!

TrinityRhino Wed 03-Jul-13 15:41:56

well im probably a tad biased but I think she's pretty wonderfully lovely grin grin

I posted my squares off today. Hopefully they should be with you tomorrow.
The only productive thing I've done today. And I've been at work blush

QOD Wed 03-Jul-13 16:46:23

Card posted

I'm an average knitter trin and 33 of a cast on gets me to six inches nicely. I would start there, knit about 10 rows and see what she is measuring up at. Bless your DD2 how lovely. Do you have enough wool?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 03-Jul-13 19:31:01

Evening all wine

Trin - that would be absolutely lovely, bless her. My DD knitted her first square last year, took her all summer, but she was so determined and proud to contribute. Please say yes, does she need me to send her woolly wool?

Thanks QOD

No posting deadline yet, we are still having folk joining us, but will come up with one soon.

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

First square done - a teddy bear.

Is anyone doing the little girl's initials? If not, I'd like to if someone could pm them to me? Xx

Jacksmania Wed 03-Jul-13 20:17:44

Trin, I would donate the money for wool if you need it. thanks

TrinityRhino Wed 03-Jul-13 20:37:09

she is so so so pleased that you have said yes. could we possibly get some wool for her please.
if possible in a different colour to mine and then I coukd do more squares and possibly use two colours

pretty please

btw how many squares am I allowed to do?
cause at the moment Im only managing to do granny squares which obviously are a bit boring

Mintyy Wed 03-Jul-13 20:37:22

Am loving being a knitter again after all these years (have hardly had time to post on mn in last few days!) although in v sad circumstances for snorris and family.

I am plodding on slowly and nearly half way through my square, hopefully will make posting deadline smile.

Mintyy Wed 03-Jul-13 21:31:30

And also it stops me from being tempted to post on the "itchy lady bits and dh's balls ... what could it be?" thread, so that's got to be a good thing.

HorsesDogsNails Wed 03-Jul-13 22:08:41

I posted my 2 squares today, hope they're ok

Jacksmania Thu 04-Jul-13 00:28:05

Heartfelt thanks to all

We will come up with a deadline, promise X

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

BelleEtLaBaby Fri 05-Jul-13 22:51:09

My two are done and on the blocking boards. How do I find out where to send? I have no idea how to pm someone on my phone as I can do anything you like with sticks and string but am baffled by technology

Can I ask; what's a mini hug?

KnottyLocks Sat 06-Jul-13 09:23:13

Belle, I'll PM you once I'm on my laptop. A little red dot should show up in the Inbox at the top of the page.

Mini hugs are single squares with borders sent to the families ahead of their big blankets. Essentially the idea is they are portable hugs for them to carry if they wish.

Marking as this had dropped off my list. I feel a bit behind with these squares, life is getting in the way, but glad there's no deadline yet. Started my first square. Thinking of snorris. smile

BelleEtLaBaby Sun 07-Jul-13 08:28:11

Got it, Knotty, thank you xx

BelleEtLaBaby Mon 08-Jul-13 19:42:56

Jacks, I can't see it either <also nosey> smile

Parcelled mine up today so they will go in the post tomorrow or weds. On their way with love. It's a very mixed emotion, isn't it - really proud that my little sticks-and-string habit might help or comfort someone, but really sad that it needed to. Sort of: I'd do the next one in a heartbeat, but really really hoping we wouldn't have to, if that makes sense?

This is such a lovely, sad, bittersweet thing. Honoured to have helped in some small way xx

I couldn't see it on the FB app, needed to log in via a browser.

Jacksmania Mon 08-Jul-13 20:41:36

Help, Pistey! Just measured my second square, and it's much closer to 7 inches wide than 6! shock

Shall I redo it? It's no problem, won't take long, but I don't want to mess up the blanket with a wonky square.

When do you need the squares, am I too late? <starts to panic>

Pistey I'm going to be late with my squares blush

I was doing really well, cracking through them, then I went and won one of the vouchers in the B&Q Unloved Garden competition (yay!) so now I'm garden bound till the 28th, when the makeover has to be finished. I am squeezing in a couple of rows here and there, but I think it'll be early August before I'm done, sorry.

I've got 4 of the initials done, so I can send those sooner if you'll be starting to construct the blanket before early August?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Jul-13 08:03:05

Please no apologies!

I'm so happy for you re the B&Q comp, that must be great, hope it goes really well, must be very hot work at the moment though!

Beautiful woolly treasure has arrived, love is crafted in, of that there is no doubt, made all the more precious as our lovely crafter had to learn crochet to be able to join in this project for snorris.

thanks TrinityRhino Two perfect pinky/purple granny squares, beautifully made, just lovely. You are rather fabulous you know. X [star]

Morning brew Checking back in smile

Hello! Hope you had lovely holidays. My parcel was sent last week on Tuesday second class so may be lurking at your post office. X

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 21-Aug-13 10:08:04

Aha! Yes, lots of red cards, am on my way shortly smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 21-Aug-13 10:08:43

And thank you, yes we did, just trying to make sense of the chaos at home now!

I'm expecting chaos a week on Saturday on our return home! It's a holiday finale! It must be worse for Dr Who when he time travels! I have taken my crochet with me so can keep learning - trying a triangle after several attempts as I refused to turn the work and work on the wrong side at first!

Welcome home! The post office can wait :-).

Just some random ideas created as I knitted! I give advice on a voluntary basis in "patient involvement" in nhs research related to my family's medical conditions eg eczema, hypermobility so can't stop out-of-the-box thinking! And knitting/crochet gives me time to reflect xx

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 04-Sep-13 13:21:49

Sorry Belle, you are always welcome to make squares. We use any extra for Little Hugs, none go to waste thanks
