Woolly Hugs...A Blanket for Daisydotandgertie : Lovely donors and crafters, we need your help.

(445 Posts)
RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 23-Apr-13 16:33:27

I'm afraid we bring very sad news. Daisydotandgertie's beloved husband died earlier this month, he had been suffering from cancer. She says her heart is utterly broken. Such devastating news, we are so sorry that life has been so cruel. Our love and thoughts are with her and their family.

We have offered to make Daisy a blanket, she says she was stunned by the offer, and we are delighted to say she has accepted. She sends a million thank yous. Bless her heart. We hope Daisy will feel the love and support surrounding her and that her Woolly Hug will give whatever comfort it can.

There is no separate thread, Daisy has been posting in a very supportive thread for Mumsnetters whose husbands have cancer. Love and strength to them all X

So we are asking for help once again sad thanks

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and Knotty (KnottyLocks) will help you with any queries you may have. If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM me with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, I can help you with all of it. Sincere heartfelt thanks. thanks

The wool we are using
* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, not the baby cash
* Rowan Cashsoft DK
* Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK
* Artesano Superwash Merino DK
* James C. Brett Pure Merino DK (introducing this time)

Just from these please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear. These are all easily available online, try Deramores, Laughing Hens, JKMWools, AWoollyTail, WiseBadger.

Please choose from the following colours.....
Silvers, blues inc. navy, lighter and brighter greens, please NO khaki, warmer purples, cream. If choosing cream, please go for the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK 013.
Pinks but only for flower embellishments please, see below.
There is support for buying colours on our website, here.

Suggestions for personalisations and motifs
Flowers - MrD was a horticulturalist, he loved all flowers, particularly spring flowers, sweet peas and roses.
Spots and stripes - Daisy says her DH loved these.
Initials - please PM if you are interested in this, we also have a date to do.
_Welsh symbols/themes He was born in Wales, so it's a place very dear.

Please use 4mm knitting needles or hook. Squares to be six inches, simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If looking for ideas for a pattern, there are many linked to from our website under Crafting

Previous blankets can be seen on our website We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

When ready for posting, please PM me for info. Postage has gone up dramatically due to a change in the boundaries, so we will be thinking and hopefully be able to be helpful and give advice.

So very sad that another blanket is needed. Sending love to Daisy and their family and thinking of MrD.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Pistey and Knotty

The James Brett wool is on special offer here at the moment

I've not used them before so can't vouch for speed of delivery.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 16:52:17

Also Deramores have James Brett on special too.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 16:52:47

Thanks everyone. Bless you.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 23-Apr-13 16:52:56

Huge thanks to all, just starting with PMs now.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 23-Apr-13 16:53:32

The James Brett wool is lovely, lovely colours too.

Tweetinat Tue 23-Apr-13 16:53:52

Please put me down for making a crochet square (or three if I can from the wool). I'd appreciate a donor if possible. Much love to Daisy and her family xxx

McKayz Tue 23-Apr-13 16:55:32

Has Debbis Bliss stopped making that wool? I just went to look on A Woolly Tail and it said it's been discontinued.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 16:56:45

It has been discontinued sadly, hence us introducing the James Brett.

There is still a bit of DB around online though. For the moment.

McKayz Tue 23-Apr-13 16:58:11

Its a shame, it's a really nice wool.

EasilyBored Tue 23-Apr-13 16:58:38

Please put me down for a knitted square. Much love to Daisy, I can't even imagine x x

Letticetheslug Tue 23-Apr-13 16:59:15

Deramores has the James Brett yarn 15% off until 25th if that's any use?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 23-Apr-13 17:00:56

It is sad about the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK being discontinued, but the James Brett seems lovely.

MinnieBar Tue 23-Apr-13 17:01:42

I have a ball of DB in a lovely gunmetal blue already - I think I will combine with another colour (or two!) for some crochet squares.

IdiotishPrattle Tue 23-Apr-13 17:01:43

Love to Daisy and her family. X

Count me in, I shall hunt out the knitting needles againhmm

OhWouldYouJust Tue 23-Apr-13 17:03:21

I cannot knit blush

But I would love to contribute perhaps by purchasing some wool for those who are knitting to use?

McKayz Tue 23-Apr-13 17:03:49

Is the Lime DB ok? I think I have a ball of that somewhere

midori1999 Tue 23-Apr-13 17:04:48

I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of daisydotandgertie's DH. sad I recognise her from the doghouse where she has been a well reasoned and well respected poster for some time. I wasn't aware her DH was ill.

I cannot knit or crochet, but I would be happy to buy some wool if it can be sent to someone who can knit or crochet? Perhaps someone who can knit would be kind enough to pm me their address or something so I can get some wool sent to them?

rubycon Tue 23-Apr-13 17:07:11

I'm always ready to knit.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 17:08:56

OhWouldYouJust and Midori,

If you OM Pistey, she'll talk you through donating. Huge thanks.

McKayz - yes thanks.

Ruby, thank you x

Can't imagine what Daisy is going through sad

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 17:27:45

MOS, all the wools we have listed in the OP can be combined. Thanks.

Sending love to Daisy and family sad

SoupDragon Tue 23-Apr-13 18:27:17

I'm in, as ever. Happy to make from personal stash or donated wool.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Apr-13 18:27:27

Doha, thanks for signing up.

We need 6" squares made using the wool listed in the OP. They can be simple or based on one of the motifs requested by Daisy.

If you'd like to make a square or two, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste and let her know. If you need us to get wool to you, we need to know that too.

Pistey - happy to donate. I've sent you a PM

I'll sign in, will check my stash for suitable colours later and PM you Pistey. I made a daffodil square for a previous blanket, it sounds as though that would be appropriate again this time.

Could I join in please?

I'm a gardener myself smile (although not flowers...)

sorry sad

I need wool , though, can someone match me up?

unique if you pm pistey she will get some wool sorted out for you

Ingles2 Wed 24-Apr-13 18:43:25

Hi Everyone... I hope you don't mind if I join you..nickelbabe has been nagging me for a while smile
Anyway, I own a haberdashery and have been stocking Debbie Bliss CashmerinoDK,..but of course it's now discontinued.
So I have a pack of 37 Amethyst ( a pinky purple) and about 8 balls of Teal 19 which I'm happy to donate if you think it might suit?
I can also use these to crochet you a square if that's any good?
And I'm really sorry Daisydotandgertie sad

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 19:10:03

Ingles2, how lovely of you!

So Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK has been discontinued?? Booooooo. I loved how it felt when I crocheted with it. That would, of course, explain why I couldn't find it on the Deramores website.

Knotty or Pistey, I'm about to order some wool from Deramores - I've found one ball does 4 squares, so if I get three colours, that would make 12 squares - is that too much, or just about right?

LandofOoo Wed 24-Apr-13 19:26:40

I would like to crochet some squares if you can match me with a donor, will PM now.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 19:55:11

Ingles, we'll PM you shortly, bless you. Such a kind offer.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 19:59:40

Jacks , that will be more than enough , bless you.

If you are happy for any extras to go towards a charity fundraiser blanket or a Little Hug, then crack on. Or add to your stash as sadly we can't imagine this will be the last Woolly Hug needed.

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 20:19:19

Maybe I'll just do two colours for now then?

But you can always put anything I send you that can't go in a current blanket, towards another one. Any way that you can use it, please do thanks.

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 20:20:25

Shoot, hit "post" too soon...

Sorry to shout but am just hoping someone will see this - DOES ANYONE HAVE A COUPON CODE FOR DERAMORES?

Thanks in advance flowers[hearts]thanks

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 20:25:58

Thanks , Jacks smile

There's a discount on the James Brett wool at Deramores but I don't have a general code.

Gowon, try the JB. It's lovely.

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 20:29:38

I looked, but I didn't see any colours I liked sad

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 20:32:26

I just looked again - I was going to get the Artesano Baby Green and the Dark Teal, but ok, I'm game to try the JB if you tell me which two colours I should get. I like shades 3, 5 and 16.

You pick two and I'll order them.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 20:32:56

What colours you looking for?

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 20:34:00

Xposts! Ok , I'll have a look.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Apr-13 21:01:38

Ok Jacks,

The apple green is lovely - very similar to the DBliss one.

Then From your list, the deeper purple would work but I also think <throws curve ball> the pale blue would look stunning and spring-like.

Jacksmania Wed 24-Apr-13 21:03:00

Ok, apple green and pale blue it is. Thanks thanks

I can vouch for ingles - she's just wonderful (cos she asked for my advice nefore getting shop grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 24-Apr-13 22:00:07

Morning Pistey, you're up early! Have another brew
Did you know our Ravelry group has 103 members?

PastaBeeandCheese Thu 25-Apr-13 06:39:11

I'm so sorry daisydotandgertie. What a terrible time for you and your family. sad

I will make some squares.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Apr-13 06:43:37

Thank you so much Pasta thanks

And droitwich - wow, 103! That really is amazing, thank you so much for all your endeavours, one day I'll have to get my head round ravelry, then you'll have one more smile

We are fairly quiet over there cos we are all wandering round looking for inspiration and most of the chatting is best done here, but it is an amazing number.

RedRosie Thu 25-Apr-13 07:08:58

I am knitting (if you can call it 'knitting' the way I do it) and donating... Donor wool will be sorted over the weekend, so if anyone is waiting I'll get it sent as soon as possible.

Is there a support thread for The Wittering?

So sorry Daisy. If you are reading the thread, there are many people thinking of you.

KNOTTY - I didn't get to ordering my yarn yesterday and just went to do it now, but just wanted to double check - the light blue you suggested for the James C Brett yarn, do you mean the colour right above the apple green? Shade 12? It looks lovely but on my phone screen it looks more lavender than light blue. Would you mind just having a look again and telling me which shade number? Thank you!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Apr-13 15:44:45

Hang about Jacks I think I can help you, I have lots of that woolly wool here. Two ticks

Got an email saying Deramores are processing my order, what are the chances it arrives before we leave on holiday next Thursday eve? We are off to Disneyland in California (we're near Vancouver in Canada) - honestly I think DH will go like this hmm if I take my lovely yarn and hook with me grin

I'm going to try my hand at the granny square for Daisy's blanket.

Otherworld Fri 26-Apr-13 20:36:12

My lovely wool arrived today also. Many thanks to my woolly donor. It is a mix of blue and cream and I'm looking forward to getting started. grin

Otherworld Fri 26-Apr-13 20:40:47

And thanks for my chocolate too grin

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Apr-13 20:41:07

Jacks, your DH will get used to it. He'll have too!

NappyHappy Fri 26-Apr-13 20:48:59

Hi Jacks, mine arrived within 2 days of ordering so hopefully you will get it by then! X

Jacksmania Fri 26-Apr-13 21:07:37

DH likes it when I'm working on a blanket (doing a baby blanket for a friend right now, gorgeous shade of crisp pale green double crochet in the centre, with a white border of three rows of single crochet, and then a soft mid-blue, rows of triple crochet) - and the blanket covers him as he's sitting beside me smile
But he does go a bit hmm when I carry my work with me everywhere grin

Someone said to me recently "you just don't look like someone who crochets" - wtf? I'm sure we come in all shapes and sizes! hmm

Jacksmania Fri 26-Apr-13 21:08:10

Thanks Nappy, are you in the UK or my corner of the world? smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Apr-13 22:04:46

I was wrong. The others are awake so feeding time at the zoo!!

bebejones Sat 27-Apr-13 11:24:52

Have just picked up a ball of sublime extra fine merino DK for half price!! (Sometimes rumaging around pays off...although wasn't supposed to be looking at all!) Tis a gorgeous blue/mint type colour, sort of Cambridge blue, does that fit with the 'scheme'?

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Apr-13 11:40:31

It does, Bebe. Result!

Would you like a dragon square... if he is genuinely Welsh he should be in red... Let me know, just finished a couple and am now on a roll!

LatteLady Sat 27-Apr-13 18:46:20

Just checked, bottom half green, top half white, dragon in red... will this put the colour scheme out?

LatteLady Sat 27-Apr-13 18:47:00

By white, I mean the cream wool... and I just found my choc... num, num!

MrsShrek3 Sat 27-Apr-13 18:49:04

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Apr-13 20:35:51

Yep, I have smile

Only because there are so many variations , some of which pop too much or are really hard to work in with the other colours. I know coz I've had to try!

We'll drop you a note, Latte.

tribpot Sat 27-Apr-13 20:40:29

Jacks - the Deramores group on Ravelry has some useful info on how long orders generally take to get to North America - about ten days?

Latte - Knotty has Views on the red that is allowed, have a look on the support thread for more.

There's a support thread? confused

For addicted crocheters grin or for Daisy blush

Jacksmania Sun 28-Apr-13 05:24:52

Sorry, it's late and I've had wine, the two don't always make for appropriate humour blush.

Seriously, though, support thread for what/whom?

tribpot Sun 28-Apr-13 06:56:46

Support thread for Jacks although today you may need a support thread for feeling delicate rather than doing a bit of yarn craft wink

Oh my!

I've been lurking on this thread for longer than I should have been because I just didn't know what to say. So many lovelies all giving up time, effort and thought for me is a bit overwhelming and very special.

I've seen woolly hug blanket threads here before and have even thought of contributing but ruled myself out on account of v poor knitting skills grin. I certainly never dreamt I'd be the beneficiary of one - nor that I'd ever need to be! We knew MrD had terminal cancer but he has passed very unexpectedly. He was diagnosed in August last year, and although the chemotherapy had been successful in battering the cancer, he was overcome very, very quickly by a number of other things. There is an inquest into his death. This blanket will be much cherished, and its comfort much needed as I fear there are some very traumatic times ahead of me.

Thank you all thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

alp Sun 28-Apr-13 07:56:09

Oh gosh! Daisy I hadn't been on MN for a while. This is such sad sad news.

I would love to do a square for the blanket - I will PM those in the know.

The only problem is I only have one pair of needles, and I am around 2 inches into another square, so I'll have to finish that first.

Lovely purple colour.

And something way too high in carbs was also included grin

Lovely sunny morning here. Any brew left?

I'm not in a position to help right now but just wanted to say I think this project is amazing. I'd heard mutterings of MumsNet blankets but didn't actually realise what it was all about until I read this.

You should be immensely proud of yourselves and I'm sending all the love I have to Daisy and her family xxx

Finished 2 squares, halfway through a third. May have enough wool to do 5, or would you prefer excess wool returned for making up etc?

Morning brew
just wanted to pop in and give you the heads up that Rowan Cashsoft is being discontinued in both DK and 4Ply. I got my A/W 13 overview yesterday and it's in the discontinued list, so stock up whilst you can.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 09-May-13 10:24:47

Bless you thank you Ingles, we had felt this might be coming, sad because one of my all time faves is Rowan cashsoft vamp sad

BIWI Thu 09-May-13 13:43:12

I still haven't finished my last Billie's Blanket square! Tried knitting in the car on the way back from Manchester (I was a passenger, not driving, obviously grin) but in the dark and a fast-moving car it wasn't especially easy.

Hopefully I'll get it finished by this weekend and I can move on to this one.

I've posted off my squares today, so will hopefully be with you very soon. thanks

Considering they're all supposed to be 6 inches square, they look suspiciously not the same. But they stretch/squash to 6 inches. Honest confused

Hi pistey, I pm'd you earlier today but not sure if you'll of had a chance to see it yet.

Just wondered if there was any joy on the donor front, if not I've just been paid so I might be able to stretch to a ball if I can find the ones we're using here locally.

Not sure if you've set a last posting date yet, I hope I'm not too late?

I think the target date for this one is 25 May so there is still time stopeatingthatmud

Am frantically trying to finish and get rid of stuff before DH realises just how much wool I have in my stash. It was all 'hidden' in the study but he is starting to clear things in there so need to find a new hiding place wink -maybe the washing machine, he'd NEVER look in there!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 11-May-13 19:43:10

Another lovely donor to thank tonight, we are so grateful to you for your generosity, your woolly wool has arrived with your crafter, and we really appreciate it. thanksthanksthanksthanksthanks

Am I too late to join in on this one? I'd love to knit a square or two, but I haven't got enough of the right colours, so if there were a bit of donor wool going spare, that would be very useful...

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 14-May-13 10:27:49

Not too late at all my lovely thanks I will pop some in the post to you later on today. Thank you X

You lovely lady - thanks! thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 14-May-13 17:31:18

Haha. DH does his own packing after my cock-up just after we were married. We were staying with his mum for the weekend and I asked him what he needed me to pack. "Just a clean top for tomorrow" ... So all I packed was the top.

Not having PJs wasn't too much of a problem for us newly weds, but he was queuing outside Burton's at 9am the next morning for new undies and socks.

Thank you so much thanks thanks thanks thanks

Thumbwitch Fri 24-May-13 04:42:58

Oh I'm just way too late for this one, aren't I? sad
I didn't even realise that Daisy's DH had passed away, I'd stopped checking the particular support thread because I felt like an interloper on there, so didn't see the news when it happened.

If there is any way I can be involved at this late stage, do let me know - if not, don't worry. thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-May-13 06:44:48

There most certainly is Thumb. Thank you. I shall PM you now thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-May-13 06:54:22

It won't let me PM you

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 24-May-13 07:10:33

Nope. Still not.

Arse to the pesky PMs wine

Thank you lovely Thumb. thanks

What I was going to say was that we need wool for hooking together and edging Daisy's blanket. We won't know what colour until we have all the squares and have done the layout. If this is a way that you'd like to become involved could you try PMing me. Thank you so much. If you can't get through to me because of the gremlins, maybe try Knotty.

And thank you, you are a star x

KnottyLocks Fri 24-May-13 07:12:50
