Woolly Hugs' Knitted Knockers!

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 21:19:00

This is a small project to help our friends out at the Octavia Appeal and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
We have been asked by the Octavia Appeal to help make some Knitted Knockers for the Breastfeeding and Expressing team at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Babies born with heart conditions often find breastfeeding more difficult as they do not have the energy required for it. With so many newborn babies being transferred to the Brompton, it is vital that they help support mothers with this.

Knitted Knockers help the teams teach mothers how to express and also about latching.

So, can you help us?

The knitting pattern is here on our Woolly Hugs' site

The lovely Rubycon has tested it for us and says that it takes approximately 50g (one ball) of yarn plus a little bit for the nipple.

We're suggesting any DK wool that can be machine washed.
The hospital are happy to accept any colours of your choice.

We have a small amount of donor wool available.
PM Pistey if you need donor wool and we'll get some sent to you.

Please send your Knockers flat and Pistey will happily stuff them. smile

We could do with a handful. grin

As ever, many thanks. Bless you... and your knockers. thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:20:45

smile

Yes, happy to receive and stuff your knockers....

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:21:25

Please PM me if I can help you with your knockers in any way....

Put me on the list....

I'vedone these before or a MNer and they are fun to do. Will add it to my crafty to do list. Is there a deadline?

Wish I could knit myself a perky pair grin

NormaStanleyFletcher Tue 08-Jan-13 21:24:33

Pmsl. Will donate wool as this is beyond my current pattern reading and skill level

foxache Tue 08-Jan-13 21:25:06

They are brilliant!
Can we use any wool, like acrylic?
Would it be ok if I crocheted mine? I'm a bit flummoxed by the pattern but could try, if you don't mind questions.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:25:21

Knit me a perky pair too

Bless you, thank you

Well a sentence I never dreamed of typing............I shall knit a knocker (or two).

DillyTante Tue 08-Jan-13 21:27:53

I've made some of these for my local bfing group before. I crocheted mine and there is a crochet pattern linked on my blog here

RubyGates Tue 08-Jan-13 21:28:21

I'm NOT knitting those on the bus smile
But I'll have a bash in the privacy of my own home.....

I'll do my best to knit a Knocker or two.... love the idea of this!

What is the deadline?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:29:48

I really am smiling at RubyG on the bus knitting her knocker....

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 21:30:19

Dilly! You legend!

Thanks for the link, bless your knockers grin

MrsKwazii Tue 08-Jan-13 21:32:56

Love it! grin I've seen Dilly's norks before, they're rather lovely wink

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 21:34:58

Foxache, acrylic yarn is perfect.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:37:03

grin MrsK

I have 6 I can send. I'm a student mw and knitted them to sell to fellow students bit our uni had a massive supply already.

Not good for supplementing my bursary but good for this cause smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:39:39

Absolutely marvellous! Send me your lovely knockers, they will find a good home at the Brompton. thanks

DillyTante Tue 08-Jan-13 21:47:51

MrsKwazii, I know I was fairly tipsy at Blogfest but not that tipsy!

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 21:48:54

So you say, Dilly smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 21:49:09

What happened at Blogfest, stays at Blogfest...

Is there a deadline for them to get done? I will see if between me and my mum we can do some

foxache Tue 08-Jan-13 21:51:46

Thanks Knotty, and thanks Dilly for the link. I've seen your blog here before, it's a great page header smile

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 21:54:17

We're looking at a deadline towards the end of January. Will confirm asap.

kateecass Tue 08-Jan-13 22:03:48

Brilliant!!! I would love to knit you a boobie. I had a look but can't see where to send them. Can you let me know please.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 22:07:31

PMing you now smile And thank you!

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 22:08:07

Katee, PM Pistey (RatherBeOnThePiste) when you are ready to send and she'll give you the details. Many thanks.

OK, I will write out/print off pattern and we will see. I don't think we can get them done in time but we can do some and then when they are needed again they are ready. Might do some novelty colours!

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 22:08:51

Aha! grin

KnottyLocks Tue 08-Jan-13 22:11:42

That would be great, PKK. Thank you. Novelty colours, eh? grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-Jan-13 22:13:28

MrsKwazii Tue 08-Jan-13 22:29:31

Lovely knitted norks Dilly <innocent face> wink

Mermaidspam Tue 08-Jan-13 22:36:37

Ooh, I'm in!

yes, novelty colours! Purple, green, red!!

OpheliaBumps Tue 08-Jan-13 22:52:20

Oh I'm sure I could rustle up a knocker, they are fab! I just hope the lovely lady in our post office doesn't ask what it is this time (she usually asks about the squares and mini hugs etc) grin

Marvellous! I'm taking the Amtrak again next week, this will guarantee nobody sits beside me again. I'll do one.

Looks like fun, I'll give it a go. I even have flesh coloured acrylic!

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 06:49:12

Shredded - please please do, grin I have visions of you now, send me a photo!

and Ophelia grin My lovely Postie always asks what we are up to and how it's going, even if I don't tell her exactly I shall be arfing inside! <beams>

Thinking I need to go to Blogfest next year, sounds like they had a right blast wine

Going to have a look at the crochet pattern when I get a mo, and hoping there is a place for a wonky knocker.

smile

Just off to PMs, as ever, huge thanks for all the marvellous support thanks

Knitted novelty knockers! Will knock some out if I can squeeze them in. Should have suitable wool in my cleavage stash grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 08:45:20

Can you make them on the train? I do hope so.

As I was typing that 2 men got on and stood right behind my seat! It's been years since I got my knockers out on the train. <misspent youth blush>

Before I start woolley hugs squares can I ask if this is an urgent request or can it wait a couple of weeks? thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 10:12:23

YouCanRingMyBell

We are looking to the end of January for these. Hoping to combine a delivery of Angel Hugs and Knockers to the Brompton end of Jan, beginning February.

Hope to come back with a deadline later.

And thank you!

kateecass Wed 09-Jan-13 11:07:23

Got your PM thanks Pistey. Been through my stash and find my boob coloured wool so will get on it.

Thanks Pistey, end of January should be fine smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 14:16:41

Thank you X

GetOnYourDancingShoes Wed 09-Jan-13 17:33:40

I'll do some to send with the Angel Hug I've just finished.

Will be a bit different to knitting blankies and they say that variety is the spice of life, don't they? grin (well that's the most exciting my life is going to get, at any rate)

Ravelry page set up so you can flash your knockers before posting if you want to show the world what you have grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 19:01:13

I can't wait to see my sons reaction. He was almost overwhelmed by Ruby's knocker. Now we are going to be inundated. grin

BigStickBIWI Wed 09-Jan-13 19:10:01

I was at Blogfest and I don't remember seeing anyone's knockers [disappointed]

KnottyLocks Wed 09-Jan-13 20:52:29

Evening. How are everyone's knockers?

Apologies, work getting in the way today.

I've finished the top part, just working on the base. My brother has a new facebook profile picture wearing it as a hat hmm

No knockers here tonight, I've been stuffing mushrooms!

Started mine tonight. Slight customisation to the pattern but sure boobs are sisters not twins grin

I had to frog mine back 10 rows because I'd somehow picked up an extra stitch. It's coming out rather large - is it meant to grin confused blush?

My knocker is now flashing away on Ravelry droitwich wink

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 06:11:53

Frogging ones knocker grin

arf

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 06:15:39

Smashing knocker Shredded smile

grin @ hats and mushrooms

Size wise, well we all come in different shapes and sizes, so it's all good I'm thinking.

And Morning brew

I have found some white and pink! Will take it to work to knit on breaks!! I nearly always get asked what I am kntting, will be fun!!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 06:43:42

You going on the bus today PKK? Start there, just a thought. smile

And thank you thanksthanks

I have only occasionally knitted on the bus, I am always afraid of the bus stopping and stabbing myself with a needle!

Not sure it will be done for the deadline but I will do my best, need to get some stuffing!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 06:59:59

Lovely PKK - I have stuffing here, I had to buy a huge bag for something very tiny when we did the Christmas project. So send flat, I will stuff your knocker here, cheaper on postage too. And if you miss the deadline, no worries we can take it along another time.

thanks

Oooo ta! Do you just want the unstuffed knocker then by 31 Jan? Should be able to get at least one done! Perhaps a novelty coloured one!! grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 07:07:39

YY PKK

smile

Unstuffed knockers are the way to go, we're looking at a deadline towards the end of January. Will confirm asap.

Magic, I have done 4 rows so far! I will text my mum, see if I can dictate the pattern to her as I won't be seeing her for until next Sunday now

I think I might give this one a miss for now, although this thread has made me laugh out loud today.
Have been looking through Ravelry for patterns for Lemontruflles and look what I found
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/felt-cervix
maybe we could knit all the female anatomy lol

Mandy2003 Thu 10-Jan-13 15:33:46

Whittington Hospital Highgate had the Knitted Uterus and Cervix in their AnteNatal classes grin Sorry I can't help with this one (can't knit and no wool shop).

My nork has now grown! When I pick it up tonight, I will be changing colour!

KnottyLocks Thu 10-Jan-13 17:31:42

You will be or your nork?

Sounds like there are going to be more Knockers than they can shake a stick at!! grin

KnottyLocks Thu 10-Jan-13 17:57:36

Ample even grin

My knitted nork is at the areola stage! grin

I will phone my mum later to give her the pattern.

I went in to work today announcing to my colleagues that I am knitting a knocker!

Do you want a long end left for sewing on the base?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 20:34:58

Um, yes, I think so. I have never sewn up someone's knocker before grin

OK! I am working on the base bit just now, I have uploaded a photo for you on fb!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 20:58:40

Just seen, smashing knocker PKK smile

I have done the breast...it isn't perfect i'm afraid. I will knit the base tomorrow and post to the usual address.
Was interesting!! Mine looks like a little hat smile

Ooo nice comments on my knocker! grin

I normally get my cat to model hats and scarves but I don't think I will embarrass him further with this little thing!

I've done my base and stitched it up (leaving space for pistey to stuff it grin).

I can either put it in the post here, or wait until I'm back in the UK on 2 Feb to post it (which might be too late). Pistey let me know what's better for you my love.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 11-Jan-13 14:23:17

Wait until you are here my lovely, thank you.

Last posting for Knitted Knockers to be the last day of January please, which is Thursday 31st

Please do send flat, save on postage and I have stuffing here, unless you have a particular desire to stuff your own knocker. smile grin

Huge thanks to all, and looking forward to the photos on Facebook grin

KnottyLocks Fri 11-Jan-13 14:30:12

A special album just for Knitted Knockers. Smashing smile

I do not usually allow my knockers to be photographed....

Pistey - do I post the empty 'breast' and base seperate or mostly sewn on? Apologies if this has already been asked...smile

Ah I shall do the same as shredded thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 11-Jan-13 20:15:00

Bless you, thank you.

Novelty knocker now completed! grin

My knocker is stripy

I never thought of stripy one! I have some multi coloured wool that I didn't think would look too good.

What colours did you use?

KnottyLocks Sat 12-Jan-13 12:33:45

Stripey knockers: smashing grin

I've done a yellow and red/brown one with a white nipple. Stripes are the in-thing for knitted knockers!

droitwich I rushed over to Ravelry and am very disappointed there isn't a photo grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 12-Jan-13 17:21:11

Yy photo of your knocker please DWM.

Don't be shy. We insist.

grin

I need to finish it off before i flash it. It will be there tomorrow

HoggyTruffle Sat 12-Jan-13 17:55:10

I happened to stumble across this thread and how could I resist. My knitted knocker is now sitting perkily on the bookcase waiting for its base to be sewn on. What will the neighbours say shock

I will PM to get the posting details soon as DS thinks it is a teddy bear's hat and has her eye on it.

I have knitted 3 different things today!

Finished off a knitted knocker, started some socks for my mum and my cardigan!

Think I will work on socks and cardigan tomorrow, knockers during the week at work, my mum will bring hers over next Sunday and they are ready to go!!

KnottyLocks Sat 12-Jan-13 19:09:41

Knockertastic!

I think we'll certainly have more than a handful!

I have finished my knocker...and I am afraid it leaves a lot to be desired (art imitating life anyone??)..
I shall post it but will be perfectly shocked if it is usable. I don't even know why it isn't right?? confused

Knocker knitted and stuffed as I had some stuffing. I will post it with my squares for Lemon once the pesky ends are sewn in. I'll get to the post office this week (Snowmaggedon permitting)

I'll try to put a picture on my profile grin

Knocker finished here too grin

TheWoollybacksWife That is a spectacular knocker!! grin

Thank you

Truth be told I'm a little intimidated by it... grin

I think I have some wool a similar colour you used for the nipple, and I have some peach that would probably be enough for the main bit. Will see what they look like together tomorrow.

I think these are a good beginner project! No increasing, only easy decreasing, and it is helping out people!

TheWoollybacksWife - impressive knocker!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-Jan-13 06:46:04

Send me your knockers!

Impressive stuff WBW smile

Thank you everyone grin

Everyone's knocker looks so much better than mine..<sob>
I am going to try another one.

KnottyLocks Mon 14-Jan-13 07:18:00

Woolly, lovely knocker! Um, it may just be my phone but I think knockers would indeed make interesting novelty advent calendars grin

KnottyLocks Mon 14-Jan-13 07:22:27

YouCan, I'm sure your knocker is smashing. smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-Jan-13 21:28:37

Mine is far from smashing and has literally gone tits up.

Choosing green didn't help grin

I try again tomorrow.

Oh pistey !! It is a simple pattern and yet I cock it up every time?? Now my base is too small. I just cannot do it and yet it is so simple confused

Well I am sending what I have and hope everyone appreciates that our boobs are all different.

OpheliaBumps Mon 14-Jan-13 22:22:21

I've done the knocker bit of mine, just the base to go. It's a very fetching rapsberry pink, with deep purple areola and nipple, rather tasteful grin

Pistey if I post it unstuffed do you want it almost sewn up (ie with just a small gap to insert the stuffing through), so you have minimal sewing to do after you've stuffed it, or would you prefer it in 2 pieces?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 15-Jan-13 09:23:15

Oh bless you and your tasteful knocker Ophelia. I would always opt for 'minimal sewing' smile thanks

Send it YouCan because yes, we are all different! [ThumbsUp]

thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 15-Jan-13 14:52:05

Smashing knocker!

Our first from HoggyTruffle

HoggyTruffle Tue 15-Jan-13 21:17:55

I'm glad you have your hands on my knocker wink

I'm moving on to knitting a square now - should be easier to explain to the DC

KnottyLocks Sat 19-Jan-13 14:41:51

Sounds fabulous, PKK [thumbs up]

PurpleFrog Sat 19-Jan-13 15:28:12

I did one last night - a purple-tinged one - just right for this weather! It will be sent with a couple of Angel Hugs so I may as well stuff it before I send it, as it won't add to the postage price. Are you just using normal polyester toy stuffing? I notice that the pattern recommended stuffing with foam...

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 19-Jan-13 15:51:05

Ninja's norks are up on Facebook for all to see grin thanks

PurpleFrog I've been using normal stuffing, I'd go for whatever you have my lovely, thank you X

thanks

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission Sat 19-Jan-13 15:52:36

thanks, just seen the photos, it's not often my knockers go on public display grin

JulesJules Sat 19-Jan-13 16:19:36

Arghh.

Now I can't stop singing "Yer gotta kni' a knocker or two-oooo...Yer gotta kni' a knocker or two" in a fine Cockney accent, to the tune of "You gotta pick a pocket or two" from Oliver.

Thanks grin

I have only just seen this. Do we need a separate Woolly Hugs bit?

KnottyLocks Sat 19-Jan-13 16:21:55

And what a lovely pair they are!

JulesJules Sat 19-Jan-13 16:50:17

Lovely norkage, Ninja grin

JulesJules Sat 19-Jan-13 17:05:41

I've had a look at the pattern. I don't understand it. What do you knit for the rest of the row of the 3rd decrease, then the 4th and 5th decrease? Is the 5th decrease the last one?

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 19-Jan-13 17:14:34

Jules, I haven't a clue, but let me see if I can find someone who does smile

JulesJules Sat 19-Jan-13 17:18:18

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 20-Jan-13 09:40:28

Purple norks in honour of the Purple Knitted Nork Advisory Team

Smashing grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 20-Jan-13 09:45:49

The crocheted knocker linked to from Dilly's blog is also on Ravelry, thanks Skoggy, linky is here Not sure I like it being classified under 'mature content' when it is designed for breast feeding, but hey ho.

KnottyLocks Sun 20-Jan-13 09:57:07

Purple Knitted Nork Advisory Team grin

As for mature content, that's us stuffed then!

I decided to go for the narrow stripes on my last one! I think I will sew it up just in one colour though, doing the 4 row srtipe was a bit of pain, 2 attempts and I can still see a bit of a mistake!

I sewed my stripy knocker with one colour and it looks fine

Thanks, when I did 4 row stripes I felt they needed to be sewn up in the right colours

My mum bought her knockers over and she hasn't made the nipples very perky! I will do that before sending them off!

KnottyLocks Sun 20-Jan-13 17:58:49

Am grin at 'My mother brought her knockers over...'

Yes, I hae been looking forward all week to saying to her 'right, show me your knockers!!' grin

Nipples all now sorted! I forgot to get a little polylope envelope thing in my trek out, so I have asked my OH to get one tomorrow ready to post themn all off! I will try and take some photos of them!

*have

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 20-Jan-13 18:52:55

Mouseface Sun 20-Jan-13 18:55:43

I've just spotted this............. do you guys need some donations of a ££££ kind? As you know, my knitting and sewing skills are likened to those of a legless octopus!

Could Knotty or Pistey PM me please? smile xx

thanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanks

I love the photo! I pinched it last night to pop it on my Ravelry project page for them if that is OK, sorry, should have asked first

I was looking for this thread the other day but looked in the Arts and Crafts bit!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-Jan-13 09:10:28

Darling PKK, you are very welcome to it, DH had to load me up, and it was tricky to make sure you could see all 10. It reminded us of that TV programme where they were given stuff to hold, and cabbages?

What was that? Five to five and it's Friday......

GAWD, it is going to drive me nuts confused

smile

KnottyLocks Sun 27-Jan-13 09:14:29

CRACKERJACK!

KnottyLocks Sun 27-Jan-13 09:15:37

Would've been 'Double D or Drop' with knockers grin

Oh yes I loved Crackerjack!

For a moment there was a different photo, but when I commented on it, you must have removed it. Had you dropped one, as I only counted 9 and I was having a panic thinking I had left a rouge boob in a bag here!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-Jan-13 09:20:06

It was CRACKERJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!

Yes it was! I'm going to go and wake DH up and tell him grin

Why did they have cabbages?

It was just like Crackerjack, but with knockers.

"Yy Double D or Drop" grin Let's take it to the telly people Knots, we make our FORTUNE!!!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-Jan-13 09:21:45

That first photo PKK, there was a knocker tucked under my arm <arf> and you couldn't see it, so we had to retake grin

Tricky buggers, knockers grin

I was about to start rummaging for the missing one!

A knocker tucked under an arm...impressive! Mine aren't that big! My daughter is now bigger than me! Don't know where she is getting them from!

KnottyLocks Sun 27-Jan-13 09:27:56

Fame and fortune , Pistey! grin

Knockerjack? CrackingKnockerjack?

<Potters off to plot world domination with knockers>

Do PM if you need to!

PurpleFrog Wed 30-Jan-13 09:01:04

Bah - that really does scupper my plans for photographing my Angel Hugs in daylight! For a moment I thought about leaving work early, so that I could do photos late afternoon, but remembered there are homemade cakes with afternoon coffee today at 4.00pm! grin I'll just have to do my best with artificial light this evening!

DH has been given instructions to post my box of woolly goodies today - knocker included

JulesJules Wed 30-Jan-13 11:04:29

Right. Am off to Post Office with my purple nork...

There will be a knocker knocking on your door from me soon... going in the post today :-)

My parcel will have my knocker, square for Lemon's blanket and a Billie blanket. I'll be heading off to the post office when I pick DS up from school. I'll have to bribe him with chocolate buttons. He loves coming to the post office grin

In case anyone sees this and is distraught. I am taking all norks to the Brompton folk on Friday 15th. So if you still want to make, it just needs to be at mine by Thursday. Speedy Nork Knitting will be required.

First wrote that as Speedy Bork Knotting.

smile

<shuffles off>

Just popping in to say that we delivered 41 knitted norks to our friends at the Brompton this morning.

What an awesome response, they will help benefit so many babies, mums, families and staff at the hospital, so huge heartfelt thanks to all who contributed in any way.

Just awesome.

There is a bunch each. Thank you. smile
