We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

thanks thanks thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters thanks

* Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

* Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

* If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

* If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 14:32:48

So pleased that we are able to do this and offer comfort to families facing such devastating loss.

SoupDragon Tue 20-Nov-12 14:32:50

I will add this onto my ever growing To Do list smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 14:33:18

Bless you Soupy X

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 14:33:42

Thank you , Soupy thanks

SoupDragon Tue 20-Nov-12 14:34:55

Why all white BTW? Just curioussmile

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 14:39:30

We felt it in keeping with Angel Hugs and it means that they are distinct from Little Hugs.

What a lovely idea. I would love to join but am snowed under atm. Can I sign up in a few weeks instead?

tribpot Tue 20-Nov-12 14:50:16

Signing up - also snowed under but want to help if I can.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 14:51:31

Bless you, thank you both so much, and yes, of course Joyful - this is an ongoing project X thanks

I will do this, when I have finished the project I have onhand at the moment. I have been considering a blanket made out of crocheted snowflakes, sewn together at the points - I could do one for this project.

Thanks Pistey.

That sounds gorgeous SDTG!

I will mark my spot, not sure at the moment whether I will be able to help but I would like to if I can fit it in.

SDTG - that sounds lovely. Crochet snowflakes for the tree is on my to do list.

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 15:01:01

We are collecting 6 inch squares if anyone feels that is more manageable.

CamperWidow Tue 20-Nov-12 15:01:36

Well, I will try and add this to my list.......woolly hugs, angel hugs, jigsaw blanket, tractor scarf, granny square blanket, nephews cross stitch.......!

BIWI Tue 20-Nov-12 15:02:23

<rummages down the back of the sofa>

I am trying to get up the courage to try crochet snowflakes with thread rather than yarn - so far I haven't managed to crochet with anything less than dk. But I should be OK doing dk snowflakes in yarn.

rubycon Tue 20-Nov-12 15:06:23

count me in.

When you say any wool suitable for a baby blanket, is there a maximum thickness? I specialise in chunky knits (usually on 8mm needles/hooks) but I know the usual blankets are knitted/crocheted on 4mm.

Count me in, but it will be after Christmas as my white Stylecraft has been wrapped up.

Vajazzler Tue 20-Nov-12 15:14:52

I'd love to help with this project. I'll get some wool tomorrow. Can you tell me how many stitches I'll need to cast on? The squares are 33.....

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 15:16:06

We already have a lovely donor to thank, she is a proper Blanketeer with a heart of gold, and this is another of those times when saying 'thank you' doesn't seem enough, but heartfelt thanks to you. You really do make the difference thanks

thanks BIWI

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 15:21:29

Ruby As always, bless you

Joyful I will need to come back to you - let me just check that with Knots X

Thank you Crafty and Vajazzler

Vajazzler - are you thinking of knitting this in one go? I will need to have a think.

The very lovely Rubycon knitted the Angel Hug for us that is shown on Facebook and Twitter, she was trialling a pattern that SANDS use. It used nearly two balls worth of Stylecraft so 200g ish. I have just put the pattern for that onto the Guide for Knitters on the Woolly Hugs website here, just scroll down a bit

Signing in.

No rush Pistey, I have 3 hats to knit this week and another 2 next week, as well as a baby blanket for a friend. I may not get round to starting this project until December... confused

tribpot Tue 20-Nov-12 15:26:42

Vajazzler - logically, it's about 4 squares wide (and 4 deep) to make a 24" square. So you can multiply your usual stitch count up to that - you'll probably need to use a circular needle to cast on that many stitches in one go.

I won't start a new thread for this blanket project specifically if people are okay to use Beatrice's one for support questions.

Woolfey Tue 20-Nov-12 15:26:49

I too will do a blanket for this project but it won't be for a while yet as I've many things on the go. In the meantime I would like to donate so someone who has more time than me can get going on one. Pistey I'll PM you.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 15:27:22

Bless you fan X

Thanks Joyful, I will come back on it though.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 15:28:55

Thanks trib X

Vajazzler - if that feels too daunting, make separate squares, we can put it together for you X

Vajazzler Tue 20-Nov-12 15:31:59

Yes I was. Have caught the knitting bug!

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 15:33:21

Lovely folks

We really do appreciate that there are a few projects on the go and the festive time is approaching. This will be an ongoing project so make when you feel able.

We are more than happy to accept 6 inch squares

Bless you all thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Nov-12 15:35:31

Vajazzler, you could also knit long stripes, like a scarf, that can be stitched or hooked together. So you could cast on as usual and knit 4 long strips.

Jules146 Tue 20-Nov-12 15:35:49

Count me in! smile

EasilyBored Tue 20-Nov-12 15:37:30

I'd love to help. I actually have a couple of balls of white 4ply at home that I've been looking for a project for.

Skoggy Tue 20-Nov-12 15:43:11

I'd love to help! Been a while since I made a blankie. Once my SPD and hip issues have cooled down (I hope soon), I will get to my local yarn store and pick up some cozy feeling yarn. smile

Count me in. I have lovely white cotton with a fleck in it that I've been trying to find a use for. Such a sad but lovely idea.

Count me in. Having a friend who has lost two premature little girls at 21 and 22 weeks this is something close to my heart

StellaMarie Tue 20-Nov-12 15:51:56

I'd be delighted to join in this - I'll get some more white at the weekend and get started!

AnnaKissed Tue 20-Nov-12 15:58:10

I'd like to be involved too. It'll probably only be squares though. Will get some wool when I'm back in the UK next week. Any deadline /timescale?

Sorry for the question, but do the blankets go to the families of the babies who've passed away?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 16:04:41

As lovely Knotty says, we really do appreciate that everyone is very busy, thank you everyone so much. We are more than happy to accept 6 inch squares thanks Do remember that this is the start of an ongoing project, thank you

thanks to Jules, EasilyBored, Skoggy, StellaMarie, AnnaKissed, PigofHappiness and HavetoWearHeels we really appreciate your help. Yes, it is a very sad idea, but yet there is something very positive too. I'm so glad we are doing this, thank you X

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 16:06:26

Please don't apologise Anna, yes the families keep the blankets, and they are really treasured sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 16:07:47

No time scale yet, at the moment, just ongoing, thank you X

SoupDragon Tue 20-Nov-12 16:31:01

Are holey crochet squares/blankets acceptable? I know it can be an issue for teeny fingers and toes.

Birnamwood Tue 20-Nov-12 16:38:23

I'm in.

My mum has been given her shopping list for when she goes to the wool shop on Friday smile she might do an Angel hug as well.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 16:45:34

Yes Soupy, they are, thank you X

And thank you Birnamwood, that is great. thanks

We are just uploading all the information for Angel Hugs to the website, so that like Little Hugs, friends and family not on MN can join in easily. thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 16:47:01

And we have another lovely donor to thank, your donation really will make such a difference to a family in the midst of a very dark time, bless your heart thanks

thanks Woolfey

SoupDragon Tue 20-Nov-12 17:03:35

I need to suck my mother back into knitting and crochet.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 17:22:29

Thank you both thanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanks

neverputasockinatoaster Tue 20-Nov-12 18:12:56

I'd like to be in - still knitting for Bea and Cup and it will prob be after christmas before I can start but I'd like to help.

tribpot Tue 20-Nov-12 18:22:13

I think I might do the candle flame pattern Minnie found for this - it's not in the crafter's guide as it's practically impossible to do it on a 6" square.

MsElleTow Tue 20-Nov-12 18:38:49

Count me in for knitting. I'll look out my blanket patterns tomorrow, and see what I have.

(I was Tuttutitlookslikerain, I've name changed for Christmas.)

Somersaults Tue 20-Nov-12 18:44:34

I will add this to my list. It'll probably be after Christmas though (and my Little Hug will make it to a post box soon, I promise!)

Signing in. Will need a donor please

CatWithARabbit Tue 20-Nov-12 19:05:43

I will get going with squares tonight. I have DK white wool with a shiny thread going through it. Hope it will be ok?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 19:16:50

Thank you all, really sincere heartfelt thanks, honestly everyone is amazing thanks

Do remember this is an ongoing project, thank you neverput and somersaults X

Droitwich - I can do that for you thanks

Thank you Cat - that sounds lovely, MsElleTow - thank you too

trib that pattern is lovely, I remember it well X

Osmiornica Tue 20-Nov-12 19:17:20

I'll sign up. I'm not sure I'll be able to do a whole blanket but will give it a go or at least do some squares. I don't have any wool yet but can go shopping next week. I'm very slow though so could take me some time.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 19:21:09

thanks Osmiornica squares will be very warmly welcomed, whenever they arrive X

fraktion Tue 20-Nov-12 19:36:24

Can we do lace patterns for these? The candle flame pattern reminded me of the heart blanket pattern by the same poster but whenever I've done it's before it's been very holey (intentionally).

LiviaAugusta Tue 20-Nov-12 19:40:02

If it can wait until the after the Christmas makes are done I've got some lovely soft dk baby yarn that needs a project so I can make a blanket.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 19:42:51

As long as the blanket looks snuggly, then holey is fine, bless you.

And yes please Livia, after Christmas we will still need help, we see this as ongoing X

I shall do one smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 20:12:01

Bless you thank you X

DameFanny Tue 20-Nov-12 20:16:58

Think I might have to do one of these. No idea when though... Hmm...

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 20:24:29

DameFanny - this really is an ongoing project, and we really do appreciate that this is a very busy time of year. If and when you can, that will be soon enough and lovely thanks

bebejones Tue 20-Nov-12 20:29:26

Just popping my head in! Am going to see what I can do, tis such a worthwhile cause & just so sad it's nice to think that I may be able to do something to bring even a smidgen of comfort.

Have already PMd the lovely Piste! smile

yojojo1 Tue 20-Nov-12 20:36:30

Can I just say that as a Mum whose first son was stillborn at 21 weeks, that these blankets mean such a lot. I still have my sons and it's very treasured.

LadyFace Tue 20-Nov-12 20:46:04

Please count me in. I will attempt a blanket. Will order some wool next week (payday!). I can't believe that in my cupboard sized stash I have no white wool.

<glares at 12 balls of cream baby cashmerino>

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 20:52:48

Yojojo1 - I am so, so sorry for your loss sad

Thank you for coming on here and for your words, they mean so much. I am so glad you had a blanket to wrap and cuddle your son in, it must be incredibly precious to you. As I said in the OP we know this is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too. Bless your heart thanks Xx

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 20:53:34

Thanks Bebejones and LadyFace thanks

Plomino Tue 20-Nov-12 20:56:23

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 21:04:49

Ravelry page set up

fraktion I know the blanket you mean, have booked marked it, so beautiful.

Stropzilla Tue 20-Nov-12 22:52:04

I'm fairly new at knitting but by chance I do already have the right wool. Am I allowed to send a square? Do I need to leave ends loose or whatever? My square might be inexpert but made with much love!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Nov-12 23:07:48

Thanks Droitwich x

Stropzilla - that is very kind of you. Thank you. Squares are very welcome indeed. Please sew in the ends, that make the hooking together job much quicker. And bless you, the love part is the most important part here.

tribpot Tue 20-Nov-12 23:08:20

Stropzilla - all is revealed in the crafter's guide. In short: yes please send a square, but sew your ends in grin

TiredofZombies Tue 20-Nov-12 23:15:04

How sad sad but a lovely idea. I'm in.

Leafmould Tue 20-Nov-12 23:24:17

Hi, I am interested in knitting a blanket. I have seen this wool for sale
3 ply do you think it is a good idea to use 3 ply?

I normally use dk, so I guess it would be quite different. Also do you think this is a bargain? Or is there another white wool on offer somewhere else? Is the wool good quality enough?

tribpot Tue 20-Nov-12 23:30:12

3 ply will be pretty slow going, Leafmould. It's a very thin yarn so you need more stitches and rows to cover the same area of blanket than, say, double knitting or aran.

The Paton's Fairytale is generally a pretty good yarn, I think.

Leafmould Tue 20-Nov-12 23:56:07

Yes, tribpot, I thought that might be the case.

Any other white wool bargains out there?

KnottyLocks Wed 21-Nov-12 00:12:04

Deramores.com have 15% off all DK yarn until 27th November. Code DKWK.

bag a bargain smile

We've been using Stylecraft Special DK for the Little Hugs project but there's an option to look by price as well as yarn so you may find something that catches your eye.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 21-Nov-12 06:41:31

Morning all smile brew

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 21-Nov-12 06:46:06

I'm thinking of a white ripple in two colours - white and white with a sparkle smile (Pistey, I used the sparkle on the edging of the pink hat double up with a plain strand.)

MOSagain Wed 21-Nov-12 08:07:29

Snap, Skoggy - they really are super-speedy.

mumofmylot Fri 23-Nov-12 14:11:09

Can I join in please? I am by no means an expert knitter, quite the opposite in fact!
I have a friend who had a still born baby just before christmas last year, so it is close to my heart. I'll send as many individual squares as I can, made with love. x

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 23-Nov-12 14:15:02

Good news woolly wool is arriving, huge thanks to all, and once again to our lovely donors thanks

Welcome mumofmylot we are glad to have you on board, hugs for you, thank you thanks

Right, I've just been to the wool shop and come back with some balls of white, I will get started when I have sewn the ends in on my Little Hug.

GetOnYourDancingShoes Fri 23-Nov-12 15:05:44

Thank you, lovely donors! smile You are fab! grin

KnottyLocks Fri 23-Nov-12 16:56:17

<rolls eyes>

thanks to our lovely crafters.

And Soupy.

SoupDragon Fri 23-Nov-12 17:03:34

I got my yarn today..just a lovely snowy white. will whittle away at it as they do take a little while to do. Have already cast on 159stitches and done a couple of rows. Been a while since I made a blanket in one piece instead of with patches!

skoggy and tribpo same here, they are probably wondering why they are having a run on white wool.

CatWithARabbit Fri 23-Nov-12 21:08:51

Two squares done! Rain forecast tomorrow so the perfect excuse to sit and knit.

tribpot Fri 23-Nov-12 21:12:17

I'm demonstrating hand knitting at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate tomorrow. This does not seem like the venue to start a knitted blanket in snow white yarn!

Have a great time trib. Wish I could come too!

tribpot Fri 23-Nov-12 23:40:01

Thanks droitwich - it's not great timing for me, as ds fractured his collar bone last Sunday :-/ He's doing fine but back to school on Monday, and I don't really like leaving him for two afternoons (although he will be fine with his dad but they can't do much just the two of them as his dad is in a wheelchair).

As a penance, I have been to see Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger this evening as ds wanted to see it grin. It was total bollocks, please everyone avoid it if you can.

Anyway, I'm kind of worried about how much energy I will need to do this demo stuff - on top of a pretty knackering week.

Oh Trib the knitting and stitching show is fab, I loved it when I went a few Weeks ago, told dp it was wool heaven! You will enjoy yourself.
Disappointed about nativity 2, I enjoyed the first one blush. My dad broke both his collar bones at the same time, it is lousy, hope Ds is on the mend.
I'm going to order my wool now, I'm on night duty so have lots of time to look properlysmile

tribpot Sat 24-Nov-12 07:23:30

Pig - I think if you enjoyed the trailer for Nativity 2 you'll probably enjoy the film, as it's basically the same only stretched out to an eye-watering 105 mins grin Poor your dad, though - that must have been lousy. Ds is doing fine.

I might see if I can recruit anyone for Woolly Hugs today - as among its many virtues is the fact it gives knitting n00bs a chance to work on something not too big but immediately useful and appreciated.

The weather here is incredibly bad. Ideal excuse for spending the day knitting grin

KnottyLocks Mon 26-Nov-12 11:03:37

Oh yes, perfect weather for crafting smile

At work today, so no knitting for me until LO goes to bed tonight sad

Skoggy Mon 26-Nov-12 14:00:08

Hello all

Hope everyone is well and out of this horrid rain currently plaguing the UK. smile

Today is my first day of having no DH around. 2 weeks paternity leave is rather crappy. Would so prefer to be back in Sweden. sad So its me, a 17mo and a 2wk old stuck indoors because of the rain. Oh joys! Planning on starting my Hug later... alot later when both DDs are in bed. grin

Ah well...My hug is somewhat larger than I thought it was going to be. My pattern said cast on 159sts. Goodness - this blanket is quite generous.

Pistey and Knotty - does it have to be square? No problems just wanted to check.

KnottyLocks Mon 26-Nov-12 17:12:40

No, doesn't have to be square. You can breathe smile

KnottyLocks Mon 26-Nov-12 17:13:08

Skoggy, want me to sing you some Abba?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 26-Nov-12 17:40:57

<gently removes the Absolut Vodka>

Thank you!! thanks

mmm vodka with some fresh lime....

Skoggy Mon 26-Nov-12 18:25:47

Haha Knotty. I am not ashamed to admit that we listen to ABBA quite a lot in my household... mainly because DD1 loves to dance to their music. However, I would be very impressed if you could sing Waterloo... in Swedish. grin

Pistey, feel free to hide the Absolut. I'm not a not a fan of Vodka. smile Snaps on the other hand, or Mariestads beer. Yummo!

KnottyLocks Mon 26-Nov-12 18:29:03

Happy to give it a go smile

Think Muppets Swedish chef stylee grin

Nixea Mon 26-Nov-12 18:38:31

I've not knitted anything since I was a child and even then I had to pass the <ahem> scarf to my nan for all the purl rows!! You've all inspired me though and I'd love to do my bit. Sorry if I'm being dense or missing something but could anyone link or pm me the website address please?

Just a small question though....I'm guessing I'm going to be going at a glacial pace for a while. Is there a time limit for them? Sorry for all the questions!!

KnottyLocks Mon 26-Nov-12 18:47:21

Nix , thanks for joining us smile

It's an ongoing project so no deadline as such.

Website is www.woollyhugs.com

We're on Facebook too : MNWoollyhugs

Nixea Mon 26-Nov-12 18:50:28

Thanks for the links Knotty, much appreciated! You all do such an amazing thing with these appeals btw. Sadly from personal experience I know how treasured these blankets are.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 26-Nov-12 18:55:43

Oh bless you Nix, so sorry, big hug Xx

Thank you for joining with us, we are glad to have you on board. Glacial pace is good smile thanks

Leafmould Wed 28-Nov-12 11:12:49

Hello all, I am doing a blanket in one piece too, and I agree that it is something newbies can do with only basic knitting experience: I am still a learner, and it seems to be knitting up fine.

However, I did have to rip it back a few rows when I did not successfully pick up a dropped stitch blush. Does anyone recommend a YouTube video which show how to fix these mistakes clearly?

rubycon Wed 28-Nov-12 11:30:00

Poundland are doing 3 for 2 on 50g balls of wool at the moment in Canterbury - not sure if all the shops have it in. I've used their Twinkle wool and its beautifully soft.

ps I've posted off a parcel.

they have that offer in Birmingham too ruby. I'm using the black for my dog project and it's knitting well

Ruby is the Twinkle wool got a sparkle in it ? I have just bought some for my Angel hug from Deramours so I may need to make a trip to Poundland tomorrow as it is knitting up really nicely.

McPhee Wed 28-Nov-12 23:30:04

McPhee Thu 29-Nov-12 08:46:33

You're very welcome smile

OK I am going to venture out into the cold at lunchtime and brave Poundland ! Reading store probably won't have any but I will end up buying loads of other stuff smile

BornToFolk Thu 29-Nov-12 10:56:50

I'd be honoured to make one of these blankets. I wanted to practise my crochet anyway and this seems like the ideal project.

Havetowearheels, I'm in Reading too! Might bump into you in Poundland at lunchtime!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 29-Nov-12 12:08:11

Lunchtime, well sort of brew smile

BornToFolk - welcome on board, we are so glad to have you with us. thanks Hopefully all the info is in the OP, it is also on our website www.woollyhugs.com and do join us on Facebook at MNWoollyHugs.com, if you've not seen us there already. And thank you thanks

Have fun at the Reading Poundland Thursday Lunchtime Meet grin

BornToFolk I shall be sporting a red carnation in my lapel and probably a red nose on my face smile

PurpleFrog Thu 29-Nov-12 13:07:56

I would like to be involved in this project as well. I have a pack of Patons Sea Spray in white that has been languishing in my stash for decades a little while which might fit the bill perfectly. I will do a swatch and see how soft it is. It is a knobbly yarn with a slight sheen so might look good with a plain white of a similar weight.

It will probably be the Christmas holidays before I can start it. Are you thinking about a 1st posting date before Christmas? Or does it depend on how many are finished in the next few weeks?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 29-Nov-12 13:40:46

Thank you so much PurpleFrog, that is fabulous, we would love to have you on board smile

Knotty and I haven't spoken about a first batch deadline yet, let me come back to you on that, hopefully later today, but we really do appreciate that everyone is so busy at this time of year. One thing is for sure, the project is ongoing. We will receive your Angel Hug with enormous thanks whenever it should arrive. Xx

Woolfey Thu 29-Nov-12 13:52:31

BornToFolk and HaveToWearHeels I am also in Reading! Let me know if Poundland have any good bargains and I may also have to pop in smile

BornToFolk Thu 29-Nov-12 14:19:42

Hi Woolfey! We should arrange a MN Angel Hugs meet up (especially as I've sneaked a look at your profile and see you know how to crochet....your squares and blankets are beautiful)

I didn't go to Poundland blush as I went for pizza instead...I will definitely go next week though and upate as to the status of the cheap yarn.

By the way, does the yarn we use for this have to be machine washable? And 100% white? I've got some in stash that I'm not sure is machine washable and while it is mostly white, there are some flecks of blue/grey in it. It's very pretty and would definitely make a snuggly blanket but I won't use it if not suitable.

Bought 400 grams of lovely soft white wool today so I can get started this evening smile

No wool in Poundland ladies, I did get some battery operated fairy lights for DD's bedroom though so not a wasted journey smile

3 of us in Reading, maybe we could set up a Reading branch of the Angel Hugs team !

Woolfy just sneeked a look at your profile, your squares are beautiful so you embroider them ?

Woolfey Thu 29-Nov-12 16:59:26

BornToFolk & HaveToWearHeels Thanks for your lovely comments about my squares blush I do a mix of crochet squares and embroidery on knitted squares but I really don't like knitting and I'm pants at it, it's just that it's easier to embroider on than crochet.
I'm not a naturally sociable person TBH but as it's only a couple of us to meet up it may not be that scary I guess! I'm still to start my Angel Hug as things to finish first but I plan to make a start on it in the new year.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 29-Nov-12 17:37:40

The Reading Branch smile

Woolfey's embroidered squares are absolutely gorgeous, just beautiful, she is a star!

BornToFolk - we chose pure white for Angel Hugs as it felt more in keeping with the project, this wasn't from the Brompton, this was from us, and we really felt strongly that they be distinct from Little Hugs and the big blankets, so if there was something else you could use that would be great.

Let me check with Knots about the washing question thanks

there was still wool in the Birmingham poundland today. let me know if you want me to get some - multiples of 3 though as they are on 3 for £2!grin

Jingleflobba Thu 29-Nov-12 17:59:02

Count me in, knittings a bit rusty but I think I can manage a blanket. I do a nice line in little knitted flowers that I stitch onto scarves, will they be ok?

BornToFolk Thu 29-Nov-12 20:33:16

Woolfrey and Havetowearheels, if you do fancy meeting up for a bit of a knit/crochet and chat then do let me know. I'm thinking probably in the New Year, maybe a nice pub or cafe for a bit of weekend afternoon crafting?

PM me if interested!

KnottyLocks Thu 29-Nov-12 20:37:06

Jingle , the little flowers sound perfect . Thank you smile

Count me in too, another one for starting after Christmas though!

Woolly stuff is working out lovely though, very snuggly! Still terrified that I'm going to get it dirty!! (Every time I pick it up one of the cats decide they want to come and sit with me hmm )

Thanks again to the lovely donors and Pistey for the Woolly wool! smile

KnottyLocks Thu 29-Nov-12 21:14:23

I've bought the wool, but I think after Christmas is realistic for me too.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 29-Nov-12 21:34:50

KnottyLocks Sat 01-Dec-12 17:17:18

Addicted, thanks for joining us. smile

Basically, this is what's what:

Woolly Hugs
Big blankets made for bereaved Mners and their families (also the collective name for the Blanketeers)

Little Hugs
Blankets and quilts made for children who are in hospital because they are very poorly

Mini Hugs
Squares made as part of the Woolly Hugs blankets. These go ahead of the big blankets and are portable hugs.

Angel Hugs
This project. To wrap Angel babies in love and offer comfort to their families. The details are in the OP.

Feel free to ask any more questions here.

addictedismoving Sat 01-Dec-12 17:29:32

Evening all smile wine

If anyone was hoping for news of safe woolly arrivals today, I am sorry I had to go out and missed the post. I have a red card telling me that there are 4 Woolly Hugs parcels waiting at the sorting office. I shall go first thing on Monday morning. Thank you so much thanks

I've paused between projects and crocheted the first 2 squares for my blanket. They're coming out smaller than I expected though, about 3.5 inches square. Which means I'll need 49 to reach the minimum size! confused It's a good thing that this is an ongoing project...

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 03-Dec-12 07:52:54

Oh bless you Joyful smile. Thank you x
Yes definitely ongoing.

Morning all.

Nixea Mon 03-Dec-12 07:57:14

Morning all! Glad I'm not the only one being slightly paranoid about white wool and dirty pets/children. I think I'm taking more care keeping the knitting clean than I am keeping DD clean!

squares for Beatrice - check
refuge knitting dispatched - check
dog alters in post - check
Christmas knitting - neglected
angel hug - next in queue grin

tootssweet Mon 03-Dec-12 08:20:36

I'd like to join but in a week or two if that's ok. Am returning to knitting & I am quite slow so something on-going may suit me better. Still trying to knit a scarf for my ds that I started in September! Will go back through the thread for advice & tips. Plain & purl are the heights of my abilities.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 03-Dec-12 08:47:35

Totally understand about wanting to keep the Hugs extra clean.

Thank you DWM

and welcome tootssweet we are very glad to have you on board. Why not start by knitting 6 inch squares in white stylecraft special DK? Plain or purl would both be lovely. We are collecting squares to make a group Angel Hug, as for many to make a whole blanket is too much. And absolutely yes, to joining in when you are ready, no pressure, we really do appreciate how busy folk are, especially at this time of year, and because this is ongoing, whenever you can contribute will be marvellous. Thank you thanks

Thank you everyone thanks

DameFannyGallopsBEHINDyou Mon 03-Dec-12 19:33:53

There's one in the post to the woolly hugs address. Annoyingly, I just found the card I'd written to go inside with washing instructions etc. arse.

So, it's Sirdar snugly I think - yes I binned the ball band after writing the card, sigh - which is half and half poly acrylic. Wash at 40, low tumble, low iron. It's been washed due to cats.

it's pretty plain - a trellis stitch - so I put in a white sunflower which could be attached if you think that'll work.

And I think it's about the saddest project I've ever done... Horrible to explain to family that I was making something for a baby that died...

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 04-Dec-12 08:31:34

Bless your heart for your kindness and compassion Fanny. That sounds absolutely lovely, thank you Xx thanks

This truly is a very sad project, and I understand about explaining to family. The Angel Hugs already here are heartbreakingly precious and beautiful, I was explaining what we were doing to my daughter who is 15 and we both got quite upset, it is upsetting. But I am trying to focus on the support and comfort we can give to these poor families facing such devastating loss. The lovely MrsKwazii described her feelings about her big Woolly Hug as being 'loved and looked after' and I am hoping that the essence of that will be felt. Further up the thread on 20.11 there is a message from yojojo1 who once received a similar blanket, and messages like that just reinforce what an amazing thing it is that we can do here. But big hugs for you, we really do understand this is not easy.

And you know, when they describe Mumsnet as being a nest of vipers, I look around and think certainly not from where I am standing XX

DameFannyGallopsBEHINDyou Tue 04-Dec-12 08:57:39

<stamps feet> I am a viper I am

KnottyLocks Tue 04-Dec-12 11:38:16

Not from where I'm standing smile thanks

BornToFolk Tue 04-Dec-12 12:28:05

I've made similar things before, including tiny clothes for babies to be buried in. It is heartbreaking but I feel really honoured to be able to help a bereaved family in some small way.

StellaMarie Tue 04-Dec-12 15:59:15

I've finished my Angel Hug - Pistey should I mail it to you at the normal address for Little Hugs and squares?

Other hugs - will be mailed after Christmas now I think:
Girl Little Hug - waiting for ends to be sewn in
Boy Little Hug - waiting for square to be sewn together

Woolfey Tue 04-Dec-12 16:10:04

I've also just finished my Angel Hug. I did say I wouldn't do it until the new year but I took a break from my current project. I'm planning to do another one so will post them both to you in the new year when I've finished the second one.

Osmiornica Tue 04-Dec-12 16:48:31

I've just finished my last other project so can start on this now. What patterns are people using?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 04-Dec-12 17:04:30

Evening all smile

BorntoFolk - that's sort of how I feel about the Blanketeers making these Hugs for the Octavia Appeal. Tis heartbreaking though.

Stella You are a star, yes please, do you still have it?

Woolfey Bless you, heartfelt thanks

Osmiornica The three that I have received so far have come from Ruby and she has used the SANDS pattern which is linked to from our website, it is in the guide, under Help and Patterns for Knitters I think she says it uses approx 200g stylecraft DK. Thank you so much thanks

I'm doing a joint effort with MOS, we are doing 8 six inch squares each, she knits and I crochet, then they will be hooked together in the same way as the big hugs are. So far I have made one square smile

Thank you everyone, as always your support is appreciated enormously Xx

Festivedidi Tue 04-Dec-12 23:30:37

I started mine today. I'm doing some angel squares and some heart squares. I'm not sure if I'll do some plain grannys as well but I might do.

Festivedidi Tue 04-Dec-12 23:33:21

Oh, I forgot to say, dd1 (13) is planning on contributing a square or 2 because she thinks it's such a good cause. So much that she's learning to crochet shock. There may be a couple of wobbly grannys in the middle of my hug but it's the love that goes into it that counts isn't it?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 05-Dec-12 07:04:55

addictedismoving Thu 06-Dec-12 16:47:24

I bought the wrong wool! I was planning on just doing 1 or 2 squares, but couldnt remember which wool it had to be, so I guess I'm doing a whole blanket! [nervous]

Qust a quick question (and please remember I'm a beginner!) How do you edge the blanket once youve done the squares? I'm imagining itsgoing to look quite unfinished? and its going to need an edging. do you crocet around the squares?

rubycon Fri 07-Dec-12 11:09:52

white wool has arrived, so that'll finish off one and should complete another.

KnottyLocks Fri 07-Dec-12 17:30:37

Addicted, are you knitting or hooking your blanket?

Simple DC crochet edge, with or without picot.

Knitted edge, done separately and stitched on.

Send for us to edge, with extra wool.

KnottyLocks Fri 07-Dec-12 17:32:58

Or option 4:

Make some squares. Send then and the leftover wool. We'll hook then together and edge.

Any of those really smile

rubycon Fri 07-Dec-12 17:35:42

hmmmm, having sat knitting I will need another ball to finish a whole one and I'm out of colours sad

I'll post off those I've finished on Monday.

BornToFolk Fri 07-Dec-12 18:25:51

addicted, I did the same thing! Bought Stylecraft Baby instead of Stylecraft Special. Oh well, as you say, it should motivate me to do a whole blanket.

A simple knitted edging would be to pick up stitches all along the edge and do a few rows. Garter or moss stitch would look nice and wouldn't roll.

Or as Knotty says, you could do a double crochet edging. Even a crochet-challenged person like me can do that!

Knotty - how do you hook the squares together? I'm intrigued!

KnottyLocks Fri 07-Dec-12 22:49:32

Hook them together :

Wrong sides of squares together, DC across the top. Keep going by...
Picking up next 2 squares, DC across...

Etc until you've reached the end of the row .

Once you've done all the squares one way, (eg. Horizontals) start on the verticals/ other way.

Then edge.

I quite like a HTr edge, then DC around after that, with or without picot. Seems to lie flatter for me. Tis just one option though. smile

BornToFolk Sat 08-Dec-12 08:23:07

Thanks Knotty! I'm definitely going to try that, seaming is one of my pet hates.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through a DC square. It took me about 5 attempts last night as I kept losing stitches and it was ending up more triangular than square shape. Think I've got it sorted now though!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 08-Dec-12 15:32:23

thanksthanksthanks A beautiful corner to corner crocheted Angel Hug has arrived safely from the lovely StellaMarie a huge thank you to you, tis beautiful X

I'm delivering all Angel Hugs received so far to the Brompton Hospital this morning, they go with love from us all. Wishing so much that they weren't needed, but so glad we can give our love and support to these poor families in very dark times.

We have had a special Woolly Hugs label made for the Angel Hugs which is sewn on the back of each Hug with a little crocheted heart. There is a photo of these on the Facebook page.

My Angel Hug is working out at 31inches wide and I'm wondering how approx your approx is when you say approx 30inches in the OP?
Should I frog what I've done so far or will it be ok at 31inches? (It's a new stitch I'm learning and I didn't realise it would end up quite so large!)

KnottyLocks Mon 10-Dec-12 17:10:00

Woolfey, 31 will be absolutely fine. No need to frog it. Thank you thanks

Woolfey Tue 11-Dec-12 08:46:33

Thanks Knotty.
It will be coming with extra love from DD1 (22mths) as she saw me crocheting it and asked me what I was doing so I told her I was making a blanket. The last blanket I made was for my Mum so she asked if it was for Nanny and when I said no she asked if it was for baby (DD2) and not quite knowing what to tell her I said no, it's for a poorly baby. So everytime she see's the blanket now she comes up to it, strokes it and says 'poor baby' sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 11-Dec-12 08:49:18

Thanks Woolfey, it will be absolutely lovely, I know it too thanks

The Angel Hugs are now with the Brompton, and they are honestly so touched by the kindness of everyone, and send heartfelt thanks our way, bless them.

wisden Tue 11-Dec-12 09:12:06

I would like to join as well if that is ok. Still very much a novice crocheter but will do my best, and my square or blanket (not sure yet which - will see how I get on!) will be sent with love.

KnottyLocks Tue 11-Dec-12 10:09:25

Wisden, thank you so much. thanks

Vajazzler Wed 12-Dec-12 13:18:41

Afternoon All!

I decided to go with the 6in squares in the end and am nearly finished on my 4th square. Shall keep knitting as its keeping me away from the biscuit tin grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 12-Dec-12 13:45:56

You are going well Vajazzler!

Osmiornica Thu 13-Dec-12 10:04:54

I have my wool at last but can't start until after Christmas now. I really want to be able to crochet a border on it but don't know how to crochet at all. Is it difficult? Or would I be better off just knitting and sewing the squares together?

Vajazzler same here it is great for preventing boredom eating isn't it smile
Osmiornica I have just started Crocheting and did my first border on a knitted blanket, really finished it off nicely. I used You Tube and just searched "crochet Border" and followed the instructions.

Osmiornica Thu 13-Dec-12 19:04:49

Thanks, I shall take a look on youtube. I'll practice on a square first just in case.

DameFannyGallopsBEHINDyou Thu 13-Dec-12 19:36:14

I've started working up squares. Annoyingly I can't find the exact 2 or 3 patterns that go well together. The main contenders are working out at 5 inches, which means a scary 25 altogether, but it does make for a handy handbag project...

Festivedidi Thu 13-Dec-12 19:40:23

I've now got 6 angel squares, 1 granny and a heart square. Dd has started her granny but hasn't got very far as she is not very patient. Mine are working out at a handy 6inches so 16 squares altogether and a little border should do for it. The angels look lovely but I'm not sure people will recognise them as angels if they don't know what they are supposed to be.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 13-Dec-12 19:56:58

The people I met at the Brompton PICU on Monday were blown away by the kindness of everyone. We know how that feels. It must be said, the Woolly Hugs crew are a pretty awesome bunch. thanks

Thank you all, these are such special blankets made by some very special folk X thanks thanks

weegiemum Thu 13-Dec-12 20:09:06

Think I might have a go. I lost the use of my hands this time last year but intensive OT and physio has got them working again (a bit) and I'm looking for something to focus on.
A square might take weeks, but I know how much these are valued, I'd love to have something to contribute!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 13-Dec-12 20:22:59

weegiemum We are very glad to have you on board. Welcome and thank you. Sorry to hear you've had problems, hopefully crafting will help your hands on top of all the work you've had to do. Please know this is a long term and on going project, so genuinely no pressure on time. Whenever your square arrives, it will be received with heartfelt thanks. If you'd like me to post you yarn, PM me your address.

Hi Can I have some advice please? DH got me some wool today but not sure if it is right or not. It is Baby Bonus Lustre DK but doesn't mention whether it is 4ply or not confused It is white with a silver strand running through. Don't mind at all if it is wrong, I can easily exchange it .
I am planning on doing a blanket, does anyone have a simple pattern for me please? Or can I just do like a giant granny square? Any advice welcomethanks From a novice crocheter x

Blondeshavemorefun Tue 18-Dec-12 18:23:39

Hello, I've just seen this thread and would love to help.
Some friends of mine have been treated by The Brompton so it is a cause close to my heart.

CatWithARabbit Tue 18-Dec-12 18:40:19

The Christmas madness got me but am now ready to knit squares again.
Looking forward to finishing lots over Christmas holidays.

KnottyLocks Tue 18-Dec-12 19:03:12

Wisden, if you hang on, I'll be back once I've sorted my cherubs.
If you have a look at the wrap around label, it will suggest a hook or needle size.

KnottyLocks Tue 18-Dec-12 19:07:22

Hang on, just spotted you said DK!

That's fine smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 18-Dec-12 19:15:01

ShoeJunkie - very glad to have you on board, welcome, you should have mail from me smile thanks

wisden I am working on two Angel Hugs at the mo and one is a giant granny square, the other I am making with MOS and we are doing six inch squares in crochet and knitting and hooking them together, eight of each. I think a giant granny might be easiest then no joining, but have a think, and your wool is fine smile thanks

And we have a lovely donor to thank thanks thanks

Blondeshavemorefun Bless you B, your donation has arrived safely and we are very grateful to you, I have a lovely knitter who will make on behalf of you both, thank you so much, you are a star X

Morning smile brew

Nixea feeling your pain, have just completed my first loopy 3D flower square using you tube, I can't read patterns for crochet lol

Have just posted my first Angel Hug Pistey, It is not quite square though as I started to run out of Wool, what it lacks in size it makes up for in sparkle lol.

KnottyLocks Wed 19-Dec-12 19:31:50

Sparkle and love. smile

MrsPennyapple Thu 27-Dec-12 21:10:07

Hello, just checking in here too (formerly TiredofZombies, have namechanged.)

I really, really want to get involved in this but am determined to finish some of my current projects, including a Little Hug I'm working on. Hope everyone is well.

Festivedidi Thu 27-Dec-12 21:18:22

I've finished mine now. I think it looks pretty good even if I do say so myself. I'll get it posted in the next couple of days.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 28-Dec-12 11:13:52

I simply wanted to bounce in and talk about my bargain from Hobbycraft... 10 balls of Sirdar White Whispers yarn for 49p a ball! I nearly leapt on it shouting "Angel Hug!" but restrained myself, simply shovelling it into my basket.

It feels like it has the same lovely soft drapeyness as the Baby Bamboo - 6 balls are proper white and 4 are a minute hint of duck egg blue. Will look fab as a ripple I think smile

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 28-Dec-12 16:51:53

Hello. We're moving this thread to Arts and Crafts, at Knotty's request.

KnottyLocks Fri 28-Dec-12 17:06:52

Oh bless you , Helen.

How's the knitting coming along? smile

KnottyLocks Fri 28-Dec-12 17:08:08

Soupy , what a bargainous find. A ripple sounds perfect.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 28-Dec-12 21:41:40

Smiling at Helen's avoidance of the knitting Q.

Bargain indeed Soupy.

Fab bargain soupy (if that IS soupy confused)
Managed to just about get my christmas knitting done so just have 2 pairs of fingerless gloves to do as a follow up then it's on with my angel hug!

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn Sat 29-Dec-12 08:33:13

[arf] Yes, it's Soupy... must remove my turkey and sprouts grin

I was just gutted there wasn't any more - if only I'd gone in a day earlier!

MOSagain Sat 29-Dec-12 17:46:24

I've been truly crap and haven't even started mine yet. Was attempting a little hug of my own and will be finishing the last square tonight and will then crack on with my angel hug.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 29-Dec-12 22:35:15

I won't have that MOS <stern>

You are most definitely NOT crap, absolutely not!

Bless you for the Little Hug, it will be gorgeous, and plenty of time for the Angel Hug.

Definitely not crap.

MOSagain Sun 30-Dec-12 10:23:41

oh bless you pistey, you are too kind grin
started my first square for angel hug last night, felt a bit 'odd' knitting with different wool but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

SoupDragon Sun 30-Dec-12 10:26:05

It is bliss using the bamboo after Stylecraft. Nothing wrong with Stylecraft but this feels gorgeous

My Angel Hug isn't all white though. It has alternate pale green stripes which are almost white. It looks lovely though [nervous]

I am nearing the end of a couple of other projects, and would like to make an Angel Hug next - I will read back through the thread.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 01-Jan-13 17:33:13

It will be lovely Soupy smile thanks Thank you.

And thank you too Shredded, hopefully all the info is there, just shout if you need anything else. thanks

I'm planning to knit one and have just ordered the wool.
It pulls back a few memories, 10 years this months since I lost DS1 at 17 weeks.
A blanket would have been a real comfort back then.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 02-Jan-13 15:43:07

bebejones Wed 02-Jan-13 18:19:01

Have just picked up my angel hug again now the holidays are over! Hoping to finish by the end of the month and wondering why I didn't just do a large granny square??? hmm Also hoping I don't run out of wool before I finish, fingers crossed!

Have had tears from DD (4yo) coz she wants to keep it so have had to promise to make her a blanket next...what have I gotten myself into?!

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 02-Jan-13 20:55:50

Thanks Bebejones - I have more of that woolly wool if you do run out. Just shout.

Thumbs up for the blanket for your DD smile

KnottyLocks Wed 02-Jan-13 23:15:55

Bless you , Poppets.

Thinking of you and your beautiful boy x

MOSagain Thu 03-Jan-13 09:01:22

bebejones I've had to promise to make one for DD and DS. I don't mind the knitting, its the putting them together I'm going to struggle with

bebejones Thu 03-Jan-13 10:21:08

MOS I've never had to join bits together before so I think I'll struggle too!

In awe of all those who have experienced loss and are contributing blankets <hugs>

(Also amazed at all the fabulously crafty lovelies that have already finished... And those who have finished more than one!!)

Mine has been ready since just before Christmas. Have just taken it out to post and see dd someone has gotten a tiny bit of chocolate on it, so have to wash it. Hopefully it washes out or dd will have a new blanket for her baby's bed and I'll have to get hooking again!

Just having a go at this for an Angel Hug, http://www.tricotting.com/uploads/1/0/7/2/10726705/butter_blanket.pdf
please can someone tell me I am not going mad.
I says
"Cast-on 133 st, work 8 rows in garter stitch" which I have done,
then it continues
"r1 = k7 * k3 , yo, s-k2tog-p, yo* repeat - for 16 times, k3, ending with k7"
which just doesn't work, I have worked out the pattern as 6 sts (ie k3 , yo, s-k2tog-p, yo) with a border each end of 10 each end (ie K7, K3)
so basically mutiples of 6 plus 20 iyswim ?

this does not compute to 133

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it does not work out. it would with 113 stitches so I wonder if there is a typo?

thanks droitwich that first row took me over an hour, keep going over it, thought I was going insane.
In the end I did a rough calculation on paper and ended up taking it back and doing one more border stitch at each end and so far it seems pretty even.
I suppose I can't complain with it being free and all grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 04-Jan-13 10:36:46

I have no idea about the pattern and can't even pretend smile

Chocolate will wash, no worries.

Thank you everyone. No particular deadline for the Angel Hugs. We are going to be contacting the Brompton and seeing if they are ready for another batch sad towards the end of the month.

Heartfelt thanks to all, you are stars thanks

bebejones Sat 05-Jan-13 10:13:57

More white woolly stuff arrived this morning, thank you Piste! smile

purplewithred Sat 05-Jan-13 12:18:41

I'd love to knit one of these next. Can I have recommendations for yarn and quantitities please - I'm going to be knitting and it won't be lacey.

PurpleFrog Sat 05-Jan-13 12:20:13

Following my speedy delivery from Deramores yesterday, I completed my Angel Hug this morning. I did the SANDS pattern, but worked 8 rows in white Stylecraft Special DK followed by 8 rows in a bobbly slightly off-white Patons Seaspray (from my stash!) throughout. Instead of the knitted border, I did a crochet one - 2 rounds of half treble in Stylecraft with a round of shell edging to finish it off. I am now debating whether or not to wash it. What do you think? I have been more careful this time to keep it free from dog hair. It still looks white... but the Patons Seaspray has been languishing in my stash for a loooooong time!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 05-Jan-13 14:47:13

thanks Thanks purplewithred, I would recommend white stylecraft and to make an Angel Hug you need 2 balls of the stuff, so 200g. Sadly Deramores are out of white at the mo, they've been doing a special offer on Stylecraft.

Purplefrog, happy to wash here if you like? thanks

PurpleFrog Sat 05-Jan-13 15:17:04

Thanks for the offer Pistey, but I think I'll just do it here. In fact I think I'll leave it just now as I may have a friend to wash it with in a couple of weeks time. I am planning to start another this weekend - I need a fairly mindless project to work on while watching all the new series that are starting on telly next week! [And to stop me drinking wine and scoffing Christmas chocolates!]

KnottyLocks Mon 07-Jan-13 07:56:06

Although Deramores don't have the Stylecraft Special DK in White at the mo, they do have Stylecraft Baby Aran in 200g balls. I have some : it's soft and hooking together very quickly .

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 17:58:47

Just uploaded photos of beautiful Angel Hugs arriving safely today, from the lovely Woolfey and GetOnYourDancingShoes. Enormous thanks to them both, they are just beautiful. Have a look at them on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs.

BornToFolk Wed 09-Jan-13 19:40:05

Well, crochet has beaten me again! I keep labouring on and producing wonky looking weird squares, then looking at the beautiful blankets that other MNers have crocheted on Facebook and feeling v inadequate!

So, I'm going to save my crochet practice for another project and go back to knitting.

I found a pattern for a lovely baby blanket that I bought years ago and never made but it would be perfect for this, I think.

I want to make something really lovely and my crochet is far from being lovely at this stage!

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-Jan-13 21:09:19

Oh bless you BornToFolk, thank you so much thanks Your knitted Hug will be lovely thanksthanks

Keep trying with the crochet though, you will get there smile

MissPricklePants Wed 09-Jan-13 21:13:17

oooh added to my to do list!! I would love to contribute to this!

I'd love to join in with this too, if I may. Not promising I'll be particularly quick, as I'm a bit of a beginner, but I've made a start and am pleased with how it's gone so far. What a great cause x

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 07:05:10

Bless you both, this is an ongoing project, so when you are ready to send, we will be very happy to receive and take to the Brompton. And yes, it really is, in such a devastating time, there is something very positive we can do to help support and comfort these poor families. Thank you X

thanks thanks thanks thanks

I have one angel hug finished. And I'm part way through another and to try and utilise all the wool I have I'm crcoheting little squares and then crocheting them all together. May take a bit longer, but means I can use all those little bits of white I had left over from the ends of the balls I had already used.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-Jan-13 12:48:55

Thanks fan smile thanks

A very lovely crocheted Angel Hug arriving from Bebejones today, it is so beautiful. Made in stylecraft. A huge thank you to her. Xx

Just uploaded photos to the AH Album.

The pics of the blankets on FB are lovely, well done everyone smile

After 2 false starts and extensive frogging I'm finally on my way with my Angel Hug. However I've just measured it and it's only 22 inches. <cries>

I was planning to edge it anyway - does that count as the blanket size too or do I need to start yet again?

KnottyLocks Fri 11-Jan-13 21:48:43

Panic not, it'll be fine smile

Phew. Thank you!

bebejones Fri 11-Jan-13 22:47:08

So glad it arrived safe and sound Piste! smile

Panic over - now I'm a few rows in it's measuring 24.5 inches. Hurrah! smile

KnottyLocks Sat 12-Jan-13 07:16:38

See? smile
Well done, Joyful!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 12-Jan-13 09:38:38

Sorry to bebe - forgot to say thank you for the separate white stylecraft squares and lovely hearts. That was very kind too, they will contribute towards an Angel Hug, bless you X

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 12-Jan-13 17:12:19

If making a whole blanket feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we will always be v pleased to accept simple knitted/crocheted 6" squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

We have some donated wool for this if anyone is thinking of starting and would like some. Just PM me thanks

ibbydibby Sun 13-Jan-13 09:44:04

Hello, haven't posted here before. I bought wool yesterday for a blanket pattern which is described as 20in by 27.5.....wondering if a) this is too small, widthwise, and b) whether it should be square anyway?

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 13-Jan-13 12:59:56

I'm sure it will be fine, thank you thanks

No need to be square, the fabric and fleece Angel Hug I made wasn't.

And thank you so much for joining us, you are a star X

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-Jan-13 19:20:52

A beautiful Angel Hug arriving today from the lovely SueM who is not actually a Mumsnetter, but thank you to her anyway. smile thanks

Doyouthinktheysaurus Thu 17-Jan-13 16:42:54

Signing in to make an angel hug if its not too late. I'm going to make use of the Deramores 15% of Dk wool and get some stylecraft.

So, 6 x 6 inch squares by 6, that would make 30 inch square.....is that rightconfused I'm wondering how many balls of wool to get, I guess I'll get too many as usual!

Anyway, it's such a wonderful project and it was mumsnet that got me crocheting so it will be good to give something back.

25 6inch squares to make a 30 inch square. Mine is 9 7inch squares with a hefty boarder to make it just 24 inches square so it's small. Took less than 200g. I'd say 250g for a 30 inch square depending on pattern doyou

Doyouthinktheysaurus Thu 17-Jan-13 17:53:31

Thank you pig, I think I bought 5 balls of wool so I should more than enoughblush

MOSagain Thu 17-Jan-13 18:49:32

cracking on with my squares now, let it slide a bit, pesky real life got in the way but have just finished lemon's square and back onto the angel hug ones. Can't remember when the posting date is?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 17-Jan-13 20:10:49

Doyouthinktheysaurus - not too late at all my lovely, we'd be very glad to have you on board and your Angel Hug will be very precious to a family.

This will be an ongoing project and will just always run alongside the others. So thank you X

Thank you Pig for helping thanks

There is no particular last posting for Angel Hugs, I am aiming though to take a batch to the Brompton with me when I drop off the knitted knockers, which will be the first week of February, all being well.

thanks Thank you so much everyone thanksthanksthanksthanks

MrsPennyapple Thu 17-Jan-13 22:42:18

I have managed to get hold of some Stylecraft (it's not available locally) so will be able to send a couple of squares. I was hoping to do a whole hug, as I would have been able to use yarn I already have, but it's not happening. Not enough hours in the day, not helped by DD trying to drop her daytime nap! Will send as soon as I can.

Doyouthinktheysaurus Fri 18-Jan-13 08:11:31

Thanks Pistey, I'll get started when my wool arrives. Deramores are pleasingly efficient with their deliveries, I find!

I would love to help, will go and find some white wool tomorrow. Do hope I'm not too late joining in.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 18-Jan-13 11:20:02

Not too late at all, tis ongoing, welcome on board. PM me when you are ready for posting. Hopefully all the info you need is in the OP

Leafmould Fri 18-Jan-13 22:32:43

2/3 done! I have really improved my knitting on this project, and it looks quite neat. Really looking forward to getting it finished and sent off.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 19-Jan-13 19:49:32

AnyaKnowIt Sat 19-Jan-13 19:55:54

Thank you smile will order some on pay day!

Great, will let you know as soon as I have finished.

KnottyLocks Sun 20-Jan-13 11:43:54

Checking in smile

A few more rows and an edge to go on my Angel Hug.

I'm looking for advice on edging actually - anyone recommend an easy way to edge the blanket? I'm making a very simple blanket with 25 squares (I think I'll need about 25 anyway... will see when I've done them!) that I'll stitch together. Any links to a good youtube tutorial or set of instructions would be appreciated wink

The Angel Hug I've just finished has a fairly plain border.
A row of DC all round,
a row of HTC all round
(TC C1 TC) in one stitch, skip 2 stitches repeat all the way round, fudging the corners as necessary.
HTC all the way round.

Probably. I'm not good at writing things down - I'm more of a Wing It kind of crocheter!

That sounds ideal, thanks - I'll keep it in mind smile

morning, cracking on with mine. Several college courses cancelled this week so more knitting time. Every cloud and all that grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus Mon 21-Jan-13 20:05:47

I've done 4 squares so far, only started yesterday so I'm pleased with that! I'm on nights so if I have sme quiet time, I get my hook out. The down side is that I keep going wrong and there's lots of back and forth correcting silly mistakes because I'm knackered!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 22-Jan-13 08:56:09

Thank you!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 22-Jan-13 13:11:57

Arriving today from the legend that is Rubycon, seven beautiful Angel Hugs. Huuuuuge thanks to her Xx

Mine's finished, and I've thrown in a knitted knocker for good measure.
It has a very impressive nipple, but I had to knit the base as my crochet went tits up (no pun intended)

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 23-Jan-13 14:43:41

Looking forward to seeing your impressive nipple Poppets

I have posted my Angel Hug. smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 23-Jan-13 16:12:58

Would love a wine... I'll just have a cuppa instead <feel like I've been pregnant forever>

I've run out of yarn... tut. Hopefully I'll get back to the shop tomorrow...

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 24-Jan-13 20:28:31

thanks Beautiful Angel Hugs arriving today from the lovely fan and the lovely Soupy. thanks thanks

Both such beautiful snuggly crochet, fan's like a large granny square, Soupy's a ripple. Please do check out the photos, on Facebook MNWoollyHugs, just gorgeous . thanks thanks thanks

Soupy's Hug has tiny crocheted angel wings attached by a silver thread. <sniff>

Bless you both, thank you X

Would you like the pattern for the angel wings?

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-Jan-13 08:40:54

A big yes please Soupy thanks

It was a Ravelry free pattern. The designer has some great other motifs as well.

Hang on.... that pattern isn't free. Mine was and is the same one!

I can't find the free version confused Obviously I have the pattern but I guess I can't share it

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-Jan-13 17:21:07

Awww, well thank you for trying my lovely X

I don't understand how I got a free version. I could "make up" my own version wink which may be very similar to the original

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-Jan-13 17:39:00

Well, there is always that option wine

I found these which are maybe not quite the same, but would do the job? x

Pistey any sign of woolly hug? <hopeful>

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-Jan-13 18:17:23

Um...not yet but we know it takes a bit longer from you, so don't worry just yet. It will come tomorrow X

<fingers crossed>

DameFanny Fri 25-Jan-13 18:20:23

Just checking on to say I've finished another one which should make it to the post office on Monday. Strangely sepia tinted photo on profile.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 26-Jan-13 15:07:08

Beautiful blankets, everyone . Thank you all so much thanks

MOSagain Sun 27-Jan-13 16:40:59

yay, finally finished my squares, all packed up and ready to post to you tomorrow Pistey grin <mos wishes she could knit faster>

Vajazzler Sun 27-Jan-13 20:18:31

I have my angel hug ready to post and wondered how many other people have included a little card for the recipient and what did you put in it? I want to put pen to paper but am unsure what to write!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-Jan-13 22:16:47

Vajazzler, I can tell you that no one has actually yet sent a card with an Angel Hug, although a fair few have with the Little Hugs. What to put in it... hmmmmm, tricky one. I think I'd go quite minimal, I shall think on.

That was partly why I included the little wings with mine. They can be taken off and kept somewhere or displayed, put on the Christmas tree in memory... anything.

Perhaps just Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time although difficult doesn't seem to cover it really.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 28-Jan-13 16:21:31

Just uploading the pattern now Soupy, thank you, they are just perfect thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 28-Jan-13 16:30:53

And lo, they are uploaded, in Help and Patterns for Crocheters

PurpleFrog Tue 29-Jan-13 10:56:49

Pistey - is it next week you are planning to take a batch of Angel Hugs through to the Brompton? I have 2 finished, washed and ready to send, but I wanted to take photos (in daylight) first.... I also have a knocker ready to send with them.

MOSagain Tue 29-Jan-13 13:35:40

am hoping my squares (and a little something for Pistey) arrived today wink
I don't think I could write a card. I would have no idea what to say sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 29-Jan-13 17:16:54

Am going to get hold of the Brompton this week and see about a delivery, possibly next week, probably the one after.

Lovely Angel Hug arriving from Fizzy today and squares for an Angel Hug arriving from lovely MOS Huge and heartfelt thanks to you both

PurpleFrog Thu 31-Jan-13 15:08:33

thanks thanks thanks Beautiful knitted Angel Hugs arriving safely today from lovelies PurpleFrog and Birnamwood. Just beautiful, huge thanks to both of them X

Photos already on Facebook thanks thanks thanks thanks

Evening. Someone who isn't-a-soup-dragon ushered me towards this sort of thread - I've read a bit of it, but got confused.

If I pick up some Stylecraft DK, is that the weight you'd prefer? I can manage plain or patterned squares, but do you need one more than the other at the moment? And where would I send them to? I could probably do a whole Hug, but it wouldn't be that fancy, so would you prefer individual squares instead?

Sorry to be a bit dim...

PurpleFrog Fri 01-Feb-13 23:24:36

Gosh that was quick!

I had a look on faceback and you have shown a photo of the back side of my blanket. shock I suppose it isn't actually obvious which side is which! [perfectionist emoticon] blush

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 02-Feb-13 10:14:02

epic fail, sorry, I do again

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 02-Feb-13 10:21:43

Leucan - thank you for joining us thanks Not dim at all! It must look complicated.

We would be very happy to receive either a whole Hug or squares towards one, whichever you feel is better for you to make at the moment.

And really, it is the love and thought that matters most here, not the style, whatever you make will be perfect.

If you make a whole hug, then the yarn is up to you, just something soft and snuggly would be our advice.

If you are making squares to contribute towards an Angel Hug, then we like Stylecraft Special DK in white I'm hooking one together now which is combined of 3 different folk's work, but the yarn is the same so they go together really well.

And thank you so much

OK, thanks, so it seems whatever I can manage will probably be alright? grin

Picked some white up today so will make a start on... something... tonight and see what happens.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 02-Feb-13 18:24:16

In a nutshell, yes smile thanks

KnottyLocks Sun 03-Feb-13 19:45:35

bebejones Tue 05-Feb-13 14:25:03

Deramores have a 15% off stylecraft offer in this week, just so y'all know! grin

Have started another Angel hug, am nearly halfway I reckon. Is it ok to save it to post with my Billie blanket when that's done? (Trying to cut down on trips to the post office wink)

Afternoon. I'm on about 16" of something I hope will turn out to be acceptable. If not, you could always frog it and reuse the wool... blush

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 05-Feb-13 20:40:26

bebejones More than Ok, thank you so much, both are ongoing projects, so all is well thanks

thanks leucan Bless you, thank you thanks

BornToFolk Wed 06-Feb-13 13:53:08

I've nearly finished my Angel Hug, just one more edging to do...and I've run out of yarn! I went back to the shop that I got the original yarn in (it's Stylecraft Baby) but they have no white in either that, or Sylecraft Special (which I think would be fine, given that they are both 100% acrylic).
I'm a bit reluctant to buy it online as I'd end up paying a load of postage on one measly ball, of which I only need a few yards anyway.

So, I was really hoping that some lovely person would have leftover yarn that they could spare me? I really only need a titchy bit, and I'd be happy to cover postage costs.

Or does anyone know of any online retailer that stocks it and does not charge P&P? <hopeful>

BornToFolk I think I have some stylecraft special baby, I'll look and if I do, PM you?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 06-Feb-13 19:39:40

and if Pig doesn't, I have some stylecraft special DK, let me know if I can send it to you X

My Hug is coming along painfully slowly but it looks nice. A quick question though - does it have to be square? Sorry if that's been asked before!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 07-Feb-13 07:38:36

Morning brew

Not necessarily square no, if it's the minimum size on one side, then it is absolutely fine, thank you. The fabric one I made wasn't square.

Thank you thanks X

Lovely, thanks. smile

BornToFolk Thu 07-Feb-13 10:12:53

Thanks for the offer Pistey, but Pig has located some Stylecraft Baby.
Thanks both! thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 07-Feb-13 14:37:43

Hopefully soon. Both are just beautiful. Thank you x

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 09-Feb-13 20:43:15

Huge heartfelt thanks to you both, they are just beautiful.

Am taking a second batch to the Brompton plus all the knockers on Friday 15th. So sad to think they are needed, but so glad that we can do something to help in very bleak times. Thank you to all X

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname Tue 12-Feb-13 22:08:38

I've started my crocheted angel hug. It's in Stylecraft baby Aran, which means it grows quickly. Is Aran too chunky for an angel hug?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 14-Feb-13 13:48:57

Stylecraft baby Aran is lovely! Thank you thanks

BornToFolk Sun 17-Feb-13 20:11:44

Evening all!
If anyone is in the Reading area and fancies a meet up, Woolfey and I are meeting up for a bit of crafting and cake on 3rd March, in the morning. Venue to be decided but probably a coffee shop in town. PM me or Woolfey if you fancy it.

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname Mon 18-Feb-13 14:07:23

I've finished my Angel Hug and have packed it up. Will try to get to the post office tomorrow. smile Can't get the photo on to my profile, it's being strange, so I'll put it on Ravelry instead. All these little hugs have inspired me to get on with my own blanket, so thanks. thanks

Good morning everyone.

Pistey, my donor wool has arrived this morning. Thank you so much.

I've just spotted the Little Hugs project as well. I have an assortment of colourful yarns left over from a project which I have been mulling over what I can do with them. If its ok I would like to make a Little Hug or two.

Hello! Lost you for a while!

I have just bough some sidar snowflake at hobbycraft (who have 3 for 2 on ALL yarn just now btw) but I'm unsure how much I'll need for an angel hug. I know someone has done one already, but I can't remember who. I have 6 25g balls, but will go back and get more!

Two beautiful garter knit squares arriving safely today to go towards an Angel Hug, from the very lovely Schumann A huge thank you thanks

Good morning all.

I've finally started on my Angel Hug, which is hooking up nicely (and faster than anticipated! ) I'm such a novice and have stumbled upon the beauty that is the Magic Ring AND using a marker for stitches smile.

Im hoping that I may be able to make another blanket with the amount of wool Pistey kindly sent me. If I cant then of course I will send back what I have left.

A quick question please. Is there a date for when you need the Angel Hugs
? As I was planning on doing some Little Hugs too, so thought I could send them all as one big parcel. Not a problem if you need them sooner rather than later. My DS enjoys the trip to the post office very much.

Thsnk you.

Glasgow meet up thread if anyone fancies it!

KnottyLocks Mon 11-Mar-13 20:56:24

Checking in smile

Cracked, like the Little Hugs, this is an ongoing project so you can either post them together or separately .

I promised a blanket a long time ago and what with frogging and RL I didn't get very far! However, I am now at the border stage and so hoping to post it very soon :-) will be in touch for details soon smile

Jules146 Tue 02-Apr-13 20:38:39

Just seen the info bit and it says 24inch square etc... mine isn't square, is that going to be a problem?! Agghhh!

I'm glad it was ok, piste. smile I don't have enough white left for another, but I'm going to have a rummage around my random colours to see if I can put together just a normal blanket that doesn't look deranged.

Morning all, just popping in to say hello smile

Hope everyone had a nice time over Easter and more importantly ate lots of chocolate.

Hi. I have a couple of projects to finish first, then I'd like to be able to help if I can.

I'm quite new to knitting so am only really confident with the basic knit stitch, sorry. Also, I've never knitted a blanket, only scarves. I'll read back over the full thread for tips and hope to buy the wool this week. My friend lost a baby at 17 weeks, she would have appreciated this sort of gesture. The OP made me cry so I thought if I comment, it means I'm committed to it. smile

I'll probably try on my 3 needles as I think my 8s might be too big.

I haven't worked out yet if I'll be attempting squares/strips or the whole thing. If its squares/strips, I don't know how to join or edge, so I might have to send them to you with the extra wool. Sorry. I will attempt it but can't promise!

KnottyLocks Thu 11-Apr-13 09:20:01

Goodjam, we're happy to put blankets together so knit away. smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Apr-13 00:05:34

Welcome goodjam

Glad to have you on board. Thank you so much thanks

Thanks. I've got my white wool and circular needles (which I've never used before! Eek!) So am hoping to make a start this week. Thank goodness its ongoing as it will be slow progress. grin

Its such an amazing cause, and such a thoughtful idea. Well done to everyone who has or is making an effort for this. My heart is breaking that there is a need for this but it is also swelling with pride at the power and love of MN. thanks

EasilyBored Thu 18-Apr-13 11:59:19

I'm off to the wool shop next week as I've finally finished a couple of little projects and have been wanting to do a little hug or angel hug for a while. Have got my list of wools from the website, and a rough pattern in mind! Just have to keep it away from toddler-fingers...

MOSagain Sun 21-Apr-13 07:38:29

A beautiful Angel Hug arriving safely from the very lovely BornToFolk. Heartfelt thanks thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 06-Jun-13 20:42:45

Can any of our lovely Blanketeers help out the folk at SANDS?

SANDS are in real need of Angel Hugs for their Always Loved, Never Forgotten Memory Boxes. We'd love it if we could help them out by making some between us.

Happy to accept donations for wool for this too, if anyone would like to support them in that way.

As always, a huge thank you thanks

Have commented on the facebook post but SANDS is close to my families hearts so would love to help with this please Pistey if I can, but I'm a crocheter not a knitter.

Will await to see if I can be of assistance thanks

Jacksmania Thu 06-Jun-13 23:14:35

Same, I'm still more comfortable crocheting than knitting, but if they'll take crocheted Angel Hugs as detailed above, I'm in.

tribpot Thu 06-Jun-13 23:18:55

Are they wanting Hugs knitted to their particular pattern?

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 07-Jun-13 06:51:21

I'll see if I can find out today. I'll try to find someone to call.

Thanks everyone. X

Woolfey Fri 07-Jun-13 07:23:25

I will do a crocheted one too if it turns out they accept crochet.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 07-Jun-13 07:26:52

I am going to ask where to send, about knitting patterns and crochet. I hope they do.

Woolfey Fri 07-Jun-13 07:36:25

They had an address on the knitting pattern on their website but I found no mention of crochet sad

Fabbo blanket, Oma!

Jacksmania Fri 07-Jun-13 23:00:34

I've just bought some yarn for an Angel Hug [gulp]. I feel very emotional about making one of these. Am I being a weirdo? blushsad

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 08-Jun-13 05:37:09

Not at all Jacks lovely. They regularly reduce me to tears. Bless you for making one though. It will be so precious.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 08-Jun-13 05:44:28

We had a reply late last night from the lovely folk at SANDS...I had hoped they were blown away by offers, it seems they were.

I am amazed at the response, thank you so much for the lovely email, we have had 138 so far today!

I have enclosed our pattern, it is preferred, but all blankets are precious. We do not have a crochet pattern as yet, but croquet plain blankets to the same size are welcome.

If you could send any blankets directly to me, that too would be lovely.

(have deleted her address, but it is on the PDF and we can PM it)

I hope this helps, and thank you so much for your support, our Memory boxes are so precious, and our supporters are too.

Kindest regards
Julie Baker.

The size is 24inches squares, so hopefully that answers everything, yes to crochet and other simple patterns in plain white.

We can email the pattern to but will copy it here in a mo.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 08-Jun-13 05:45:46

The pattern from SANDS

Thank you for offering to knit for Sands Precious Memory Boxes.

If you are intending to make a blanket with the lace edging, then please knit the basic blanket no larger than a 20 inch square.

8Easy Baby Blanket with Lace Option*
This lace border makes the easy blanket very special but we are happy for you to knit to the basic pattern. (You can use any white wool and needles to suit, to give a soft drape).
The basic pattern knit to approx a 24” square. It will always come square.

200gm of Double Knit Wool and size 8 (UK) needles.

Cast on 1 stitch
Next row:- Make the one stitch into two stitches.
Next row:- Knit 1, into the next stitch make another,  3 stitches on needle.
Continue to knit, ALWAYS knit the first stitch and into the 2nd stitch make another. Only increase this way at the BEGINNING of a row.
Continue until you have almost come to the end of the 100gm ball.
Knit 1 row plain.
Next row:- Knit 1, Knit 2 together, Knit to end of row.
Continue this way, always knit the 1st stitch then decrease into the next stitch by knitting 2 together until 1 stitch remains. You should now have a neat square.

Using Double Knit and size 8 (UK) needles Cast on 8 stitches
Row 1 (Wrong side) Slip 1, Knit 1, (Yarn fwd knit 2 tog) twice, Yarn fwd, Knit 2 (9 sts)
Rows 2, 3, and 6. Slip 1 Knit to the end.
Row 3. Slip 1, knit 2 (yarn fwd knit 1 tog) twice. Yarn fwd Knit 1 (10 sts)
Row 5. Slip 1, knt 3 (yarn fwd knit 2 tog) twice. Yarn fwd Knit 2 (11 sts)
Row 7. Slip 1, knit 4 (yarn fwd knit 2 tog) twice. Yarn fwd Knit 2 (12 sts)
Row 8. Slip 1, Knit 11 sts
Row 9. Cast off 4 sts. Knit to the end (8 sts)
Row 10. Slip 1, knit to the end (8 sts)

These 10 rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until it is long enough to fit all around. Sew onto the blanket.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 08-Jun-13 05:53:19

So please email for the PDF - on our admin@woollyhugs.com address am in and out today, so please bear with!

Will post the above on FB a bit later too.

tribpot Sat 08-Jun-13 06:32:36

Jacks, I feel very emotional about doing an Angel Hug as well.

The yarn I already have is 4-ply rather than DK, I'm assuming that doesn't matter as long as it comes out to the right size.

Oh fantastic, thanks pistey.

Do you think crochet squares need to be a solid square, rather than say something done in the round, or granny based?

Also can anyone advise on wool quantity? I'm off to London this weekend to support DP do an overnight 100km bike ride. I should have some time on my hands so will get cracking but do you think I should take 1 ball of DK or two? Will pop into town before we go to stock up as have no white.

tribpot Sat 08-Jun-13 08:27:44

Mud - the pattern calls for 200g of DK, I'm guessing a crochet blanket would require approx the same amount.

It sounds like SANDS want quite plain blankets, I don't know if that's something specific or more to make sure beginner knitters don't feel put off. In case there is a specific reason for plain blankets, I would err on the side of caution and go for something simple. I was thinking about Lucy's Blanket but might just go for a garter square with a simple lace edging from Knitting on the Edge.

Jacksmania Sat 08-Jun-13 13:48:12

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not being a numpty smile

I bought some white Sirdar Snuggly yarn yesterday, and have started on my Angel Hug. Just doing half-double crochets (US terminology, what would it be called in UK?), so that's a simple pattern. Now I just need to find a measuring tape and make sure I've eyeballed it up exactly 24" hmm - should have done that before I got 4 rows in [grrr at self].

Jacksmania Sat 08-Jun-13 14:16:33

Sorry to be a PITA, but they want then exactly 24" square?

So 28" wouldn't work?
<eyes four rows of crocheting already done>

Sigh. Silly me. Should have measured.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 09-Jun-13 21:55:03

Not a pain in the arse at all Jacks.

28 is quite a lot bigger overall, I suspect they will want as close to 24" square as possible, sorry that may not have been the answer you wanted X

Jacksmania Mon 10-Jun-13 00:10:27

No problem - I've already undone it and shrunk it down and have more than the four original rows done smile

MOSagain Mon 10-Jun-13 14:23:06

Have just started on squares for an angel hug but am worried it will be too plain if just 16 x plain garter stich?

Just started my Angel Hug. Size 8 needles seem very clunky after using Size 4 wooden ones for smaller squares!

MOSagain Mon 10-Jun-13 15:24:58

size 8? blimmey, I'd been using my normal 4mm ones! sad

PurpleFrog Mon 10-Jun-13 15:30:25

What size of wool are you using BeerTricksPotter? Just wondering If you are doing the SANDS blanket above, as UK8 needles ARE 4mm! If not, sorry for butting in....

MOSagain Mon 10-Jun-13 15:38:18

<stops panicking> so I'm using the right ones then?

PurpleFrog Mon 10-Jun-13 15:42:12

MOSagain - why don't you sew your garter stitch squares together so that every 2nd one is turned on its side in a sort of chequerboard pattern. This will only work if your squares really are square.

MOSagain Mon 10-Jun-13 15:49:14

grin I can only do plain squares but they are now actually square and no longer wobbly arsed! Will give that a go, thanks Purple. Just a bit worried that someone will get a boring plain one. Not tried sewing together but will give it a go when I finish them all.

tribpot Mon 10-Jun-13 16:26:32

4mm is the right size needle for double knitting weight wool.

MOS, you can just do one big square - the basic SANDS pattern calls for doing a square on the diagonal (so first row, knit 1. Second row, knit front and back to make two stitches, thereafter knit 1, knit front and back, knit to end of row). This makes it very difficult for the square not to end up square!

I'm doing a plain blanket as that's what SANDS appear to have requested.

So sorry for panicking you, MOSagain. It would really help if I actually read the instructions properly and converted the needle sizes. blush

Thank you for butting in, PurpleFrog grin

Although it looks nice on size 8 needles so I think I'll finish it and use it for something else. I have loads of dk white for a blanket for SANDS next.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 10-Jun-13 17:31:53

Are we all ok? smile

<adjusts contact lenses>

MOSagain Mon 10-Jun-13 17:40:36

Christ, no idea what you mean by knitting on the diagonal!

tribpot Mon 10-Jun-13 18:15:17

Increase one stitch in every row makes a triangle. When at the right size, decrease one stitch in each row. Makes a diamond.

Rotate diamond. Voila - square.

I've gone for this pattern in the end.

I'm about 1/3 way through the main body which I've made 20" or so, then I'm hoping the edging will bump it up to the full 24". My tensions tight so it looks a little different to the picture but I'm hoping its plain enough.

Jacksmania Sat 15-Jun-13 05:24:11

Can I ask a stupid question? blush

Who actually gets Angel Hugs? Are they for babies who've passed away? I mean, are they buried with their blankies? (sob) sad
Or are they for their parents to keep after?
Sorry, I know I'm being dim.

KnottyLocks Sat 15-Jun-13 06:15:38

Jacks, just as you think, very sadly. The Angel Hugs are for babies who are no longer with us. The SANDS blankets form part of a memory box given to parents.
The Angel Hugs sent to the Brompton wrap new angels and provide comfort. Many will choose to keep the blankets, some may decide that the blanket stays with their angel.

I'm away this week coming but DH will be here, he'll go and retrieve them. Am back for one day next weekend then off again, so if anyone has anything to post, maybe best now to wait until after Aug 19th.

MOS - it won't look crap! Lots of folk do sew together, maybe ask Rubycon, because that is how she puts together her bigger Billie's Blankets, and they are just lovely.

Fraxinus This is an ongoing project, we are committed to keeping this going long term, so whenever you make, we will welcome your AH warmly and it will go and help a family in a very dark time, so thank you. We tend to take every 4 monthly to the Brompton. thanks

Was home for a night, now off again for two weeks, Jacks it will be fine, tis not here yet, and my lovely neighbour will be coming in when we are away and another lovely neighbour works from home and often takes parcels in for me. Failing that, I will collect it from the sorting office when we are back.

Just found this thread as it came up on Active grin

I was not aware of the appeal or the Wooly Hugs, but have a completed blanket in my craft basket. It is a pale cream, so not white, and only 20" x 30" so also a bit smaller than your guidelines. Two counts against it confused but I would love it to find a home if you think it would be useful.

My lovely aunt used to knit these for our local prem baby unit and I was inspired to copy her take up my needles again. It was a slow process and sadly my auntie died suddenly so never saw the finished blanket.

Do you think you could make use of it? I haven't yet RTFT but will try to and see how I can help in other ways.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 12-Oct-13 08:51:53

Well, we are glad to have you here now! smile

We have several ongoing projects if you look at our website here and we'd LOVE to accept your blanket as one of the Little Hugs for Yorkhill. Would be a perfect size for a baby.

There are other projects going on too, and if you like us on Facebook MNWoollyHugs or follow us on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs, you will see other projects that we share to encourage folk to take part in. Currently in addition to our own projects, we are supporting two groups making blankets for Syrian children and also making woolly norks for John Radcliffe's breastfeeding support team.

There are photo albums of blankets on both the website and the FB page.

Once you've seen what the Little Hug project is all about and if you want your lovely blanket to go to that, then PM me and I'll give you the address for posting. Thank you so much.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 15-Oct-13 09:35:44

Today, October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day across the world, and anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby is invited to join an international ‘Wave of Light’ at 7pm local time tonight.

Our candle is ready, we will light it this evening with much love for ALL those amongst our Woolly Hugs community whose lives have been touched by the heart-breaking loss of a baby before, during or after birth.

To join in the Wave of Light, simply light a candle at 7pm and let it burn for at least an hour in their memory.

If you would like to post a photo of your candle on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs, you are very welcome to. X

Thinking of all the beautiful babies gone too soon. Much love to all our families, we are keeping you close in our hearts and thoughts.

I've only just found this thread but I wanted to say thank you to you all. As a recently bereaved mum I know first hand what a huge impact your beautiful gifts have & how much they are appreciated. My little boy was born at 24 weeks and passed 10 days later. We hadn't bought him any blankets & none of the clothes we had would have fitted him. On the day he passed the staff at the hospital wrapped him in a beautiful white crochet blanket and my husband and I cradled him for the first & last time as he went to sleep. It meant so much that he was warm, cosy & comfortable & it's thanks to people like you. I just wanted to let you all know what an important part you played in making what could have been an awful experience more bearable.

Hi, I'd love to do an Angel hug blanket, what a wonderful idea.
I'm very new to crochet though so it might take a little while! How many 100g balls does it roughly take for a complete blanket, will get online and order some now grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 06-Jan-14 13:54:49

Hello there Scarlotti and welcome, we are very glad to have you on board

Please don't worry about the time it takes, whenever it is ready, we will be very glad to receive your Angel Hug, bless you.

It takes approximately 200g to make a 24 inch square blanket, and please use any white wool suitable for a baby blanket, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The yarn we recommend is Stylecraft Special DK which is readily available in online stores such as Deramores, Masons, Wool Warehouse etc.

Thank you so much. When you are ready to post, please PM me and I'll send you the details. If not already there, do join us on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs or Twitter @MNWoollyHugs as these are good ways of keeping in touch and seeing photos of all lovely blankets that arrive.

Thank you.

Oh I am so glad it arrived ok!

Thank you for setting the project up. Although it took me a very long time to get it finished, it was a sense of achievement when it was done!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 12-Jan-14 09:26:17

Thanks lovely leaf we have our fabulous friends at the Brompton to thank too.

Next collection will be going to them end of Feb time, yours will be there. So it doesn't matter how long it takes to make, it will go to a family in very bleak times and in great need. Bless you.

Allalonenow Wed 15-Jan-14 16:11:47

I've been thinking about this for a few days now, and just got a couple of queries.
I thought a centre of Roman stitch with a border of seed stitch would be something I could do, would that be alright?
Also a lot of the white yarns are polyester/acrylic, (though they do say they are soft) so can they be used, or is wool better? Also a lot of them have a pearly or irridescent thread in them, are that type to be avoided?
I wouldn't need donated yarn, I could provide my own.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 16-Jan-14 08:57:38

Bless your heart Allalonenow you are lovely.

Your blanket plan sounds lovely, it will be beautiful. We recommend Stylecraft Special DK in white, it is an acrylic, beautifully soft and folk like working with it. It is very easy to get hold of from Masons plenty of others have it too.

There is no huge rush, this is an ongoing project. Whenever you finish, your Angel Hug will go to the Brompton for a family in a very bleak time, and it will mean the world to them. So thank you thanks

headlesslambrini Thu 16-Jan-14 09:15:49

do they have to be knitted or crocheted? Would I be able to quilt one?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 16-Jan-14 10:18:14

Yes, indeed you would headless In the very first collection we sent, I'd made a very basic cotton quilt that went. Not had any since, but we are very open to them thanks

Our website is here, all the info is there

Thank you so much, can't really explain how much we appreciate this X

Last posting for the next collection of Angel Hugs is Saturday 15th February 2014.

Please message us for posting information. thanks

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone that's done a full angel hug knows roughly how many stitches they cast on? I have a lovely stitch dictionary so I'm hoping to be able to use it for this project.

Allalonenow Thu 23-Jan-14 14:35:03

Hello Song
I'm just starting an angel hug, so a bit of trial and a lot of error for me. I cast on 320 stitches, but with then all crammed on one needle it was impossible to measure properly.
After a few rows I've moved them onto a circular needle, and found that it is twice as long as required!!
So I am going to try 170 stitches next, I think that will be about 29 inches, so a nice generous size.
I'll post again when I've done a few rows and measured.

Hi allalonenow I've just found this blog which gives cast on amounts for different sizes of blankets, maybe it will help?

PurpleFrog Thu 23-Jan-14 15:03:53

Songbirds - the number of stitches you need will depend on the stitch pattern you intend to do. Do a sample piece, over 20-30 stitches, or a couple of pattern repeats, with at least 10 rows and measure it . Then work out how many you stitches you will need to cast on for the length you need. Alternatively, do the diagonal garter stitch blanket suggested in the info about Angel Hugs. You just keep increasing until the side length is correct, then go into decrease mode.

thanks purplefrog I will do a sample piece when my wool arrives, thanks for your help

MOSagain Mon 17-Feb-14 08:10:58

agggghhhhhhhh <knits faster> I try to have at least 1 blanket for each project but I'm sinking under piles of yarn!

MOSagain Mon 17-Feb-14 08:36:42

I don't suppose it would be possible to have one stickied post with all the current up to date posting dates for all the projects? I think there is another BB one in March and then I'm away from 8th May til 25th so will have to get my AH and BB posted before then!

Allalonenow Sun 23-Mar-14 22:33:51

Just thought I would check in and say I am knitting, but I'm very slow. Also, I would like to crochet two or three little hearts and fix them onto the shawl.
I've not done any crochet before, but hoping it won't be too difficult to do.
Planning to be ready for the May send off.
Best wishes,
All x
