Blanket for Cupofteaplease: Crafters & donors, your help is needed. x

I have to admit that it has taken me while to write this. Sometimes it feels that despite all the words at our fingertips, there are never the right ones.

This morning we learnt of the heartbreaking news that Cupofteaplease's beautiful daughter, Beatrice, had been taken from us: another bright star to light the skies above us.

If you have followed Cup's threads, you could not have failed to be touched by Bea's magic and be inspired by her mother and her family (affectionately known as The Teaset ) who ensured that for Bea, 'A life filled with love is a life worth living.'
Their dedication to Bea, their bravery and love reached many hearts and touched many lives. Bea will live long in our hearts and memories.

Our thoughts and love are with them all and we hope that this blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them.

We would be very grateful for your help. Here's how:

We need knitters, crocheters and donors.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
Whatever way youd like to be involved, please PM Pistey: it really helps us to know how many people are involved. Thanks

The wool we are using:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

* Rowan Cashsoft DK.

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

* 4mm knitting needles or hooks

* knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

* 6" squares

The Colours:

Pinks, blues, greens, warm purples, silvers and cream (we'd be grateful if you use Debbie Bliss 013, if opting for cream)

If you wish to make flowers and bees and would like to use yellow, please PM Pistey as we have some in our stash and we would like to use the same colour throughout. Thanks

Ideas for squares:

Bees, primroses, violets, daisies and any other flowers.

Please don't feel daunted by any of the ideas as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen here on the Woolly Hugs website . We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' our Facebook page, you'll be updated on progress via your News Feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

thanks thanks thanks thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 24-Oct-12 16:50:20

It is a very sad day sad

Bea touched the lives of so many, as has Cup and her family. I feel like I lost part of my heart to the beautiful Bea, I know lots feel the same and she will live long within our hearts and in our thoughts. Bless her.

And yes, I am here, please PM me to let us know you are with us, and if I can help in any way. We truly appreciate everything and everyone's contributions.

Earlier I lit a candle for Bea and am thinking of them all with much love. Xx

vajazzler good on you. I only learnt to knit in May and was very proud that the lovely MrsY taught me to knit and my first ever attempt (with somewhat wobbly bottom) was for her son's blanket. As I was constantly told when I joined the woolly hugger's, plain square are good, we need plain squares.

Count me in Pistey, will PM you.

Knotty - I always find these blankets emotional because we usually start following a loss of someone lovely. And then I get emotional cos' everyone piles in. And I find what the donors do just so generous. It's team work isn't it?

Milliways Wed 24-Oct-12 18:57:41

I have sent a donation, Thank you for organising this.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 24-Oct-12 18:58:03

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Oct-12 20:53:38

If any of you are having trouble getting through to Pistey, you could try PMing me.
As we found found in the past, the PM system can struggle a little under the weight of your kindness. We think it may be having a wee strop tonight.

Failing that, we can also be contacted via ou Facebook page MNWoollyHugs or at admin @ woollyhugs . com

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul Wed 24-Oct-12 20:56:22

I am sure Pistey will get through her PMs in due course. I have mentioned to her that if you are inundated with response, maybe a blanket for each of the teastet girls?

Ignore me if I am being presumptious, as a non knitter blush

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Oct-12 21:04:54

It's more the concern about the Pms being sent but not arriving. Or refusing to be sent! Little darlings.

Exit, we care not if you are a non-knitter, my lovely smile You are one of us.

Although maybe it's about time we got you crafting.

IslaMann Wed 24-Oct-12 21:09:00

This is a link to Cup's thread she started this evening if you should wish to share your condolences. sad

Pancakeflipper Wed 24-Oct-12 22:21:29

Oh Knots - I fear our squares will be tear stained and snotty. It's so moving.

I am a lapsed knitter and have often lurked on the Blanket threads, but never joined in.
Even in death, little Bea spurns me into action.
I would love to help, by whatever way is the most helpful.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Oct-12 22:28:40

Pancake, I know how you feel exactly. I've shed quite a few today.

Dogwood , welcome. If you feel able to knit a square or two, that would be lovely . They can be as simple as garter stitch or as fancy as you like.
It isn't the complexity that makes them special, it's the love and thought that's gone into them.

Knotty, I have PMd you - I could not get a PM to Pisty to go!

Are you happy to combine knitted and crocheted squares in one blanket?
I can pay for my own wool but have no chance to get to a shop any time soon. Can I mailorder some of the wool you are using?

Sorry to be asking all these newbie questions blush...

Somersaults Wed 24-Oct-12 22:37:51

I'm in bed with tears rolling down my face reading Cup's thread. Makes me want to wake my LO up for a kiss and a hug. Cannot begin to imagine what they are going through and so glad to be able to do something, anything, that might make even a tiny difference for them.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Oct-12 22:40:10

Dogwood, we embrace the mix of knitted and crocheted squares smile

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Oct-12 22:41:04

thanks WheresMyCow

MapofTassie Thu 25-Oct-12 10:08:20

I've already PM'd you Pistey (and got a reply), I'll knit a couple of squares.
I read Cupoftea's post with tears streaming down my face. My boys have been stuck inside all day today as it is raining and have been bouncing off the walls. After reading about Bea, I gave them both a kiss and a cuddle and told them to remember a beautiful little girl who had become a star.
My squares are not the neatest, but they are done with love as are all the squares that we make.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 10:55:29

Thank you Tassie, and you are right, it's the love and thought that's gone into each square that is the most important part, the very essence of the blanket, and when it comes together, all squares from crafters and donors all joined together tis something rather extraordinary. And we have crafters and donors the length and breadth of the land, and as far away as the Middle East, Australia and the USA. Tis truly something special.

Am just replying to PMs, but they are being odd, so please don't think I am ignoring you, just please bear with me smile thanks

Thinking of Bea, Cup and the Teaset X

SoupDragon Thu 25-Oct-12 11:24:31

Each square is the hug we'd like to give the recipient but can't.

Woolfey Thu 25-Oct-12 13:10:32

Soupy - that just sums it up perfectly x

Count me in for a couple of squares.

Lots of love to Cup and her family x

SandWitch Thu 25-Oct-12 13:26:13

I can't knit, or crochet, or do anything useful like that, but I would like to donate for the fabulous MNers that can.

I have sent a PM - please let me know what I need to do.

GlaikitFizZombie Thu 25-Oct-12 13:35:44

Just quickly popping in to say deramores has 10% off rowan yarns this week. Makes it 5.18 a ball. Probably not the cheapest out there but they have a good range of colours. smile

Please count me in - I will get knitting asap. At a time like this, it is good to be able to do something to offer some comfort.

MrsKwazii Thu 25-Oct-12 13:47:02

As someone with absolutely no knitting skills whatsoever, I love it that I can still be part of Team Woolly Hugs by donating wool. Knowing that a talented Mumsnetter is turning that wool into something beautiful and special is a great feeling. I hope that Cup will find comfort in her blanket.

And on the subject of "plain" squares, can I also say that even the most simple of styles look amazing to me. The care, talent and precision that goes into them is fabulous. You knitters and crocheters are a very special bunch smile

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Thu 25-Oct-12 14:04:23

SandWitch and other donors - there are many crafters (including me) who would be unable to take part if you didn't send us wool. Or, we'd be forced to use lower quality materials so that more people could take part which would mean the blankets didn't last very long or wash very well - these are after all aimed at families.

Please, never think that "only" sending a few quid is in any way inferior. In terms of time, it's probably about the same; i can make a plain 6" granny square in about 20 minutes now, and could easily spend that browsing a website choosing and paying for wool!

issimma Thu 25-Oct-12 14:07:14

I can't knit, but am happy to donate (a bit of) cash. Can someone PM me to let me know how.

lia66 Thu 25-Oct-12 14:08:16

I will knit please, will only be plain squares though as i am a novice. Happy to receive donated wool as funds are a bit low at the moment.

Absolutely heartbreaking news about little Bea. sad

SoupDragon Thu 25-Oct-12 14:11:16

Donors are fabulous smile It's what makes the blankets so wonderful - everyone can take part, not just those who are supremely talented able to crochet or knit.

And I think plain squares are essential. A blanket full of fancy squares would be really busy smile

Pancakeflipper Thu 25-Oct-12 14:13:53

Does anyone else receiving wool from a woolly donor get really excited when the little bag of wool comes through the post? Cos then you get to see what colour you are knitting/crocheting with?

Tuttutitlookslikerain Thu 25-Oct-12 14:18:00

I've Pm'ed you Pistey.

I would be honoured to be involved in this.

SandWitch Thu 25-Oct-12 14:19:22

Thanks for those kind words Purple. It’s hard not to feel, well, useless really at a time like this.

I really do think that all of you crafters are amazing though – being caring and talented are great traits to have.

MrsKwazii Thu 25-Oct-12 14:20:48

Definitely Soupy, not only are the "plain" squares beautiful in their own way, they provide a gorgeous backdrop to set off the patterned, crocheted and motif squares

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Thu 25-Oct-12 14:22:28

issima will accept paypal, don't forget to include your mn name (and who you're donating for) in the message bit.

Otherwise, pm RatherBeOnThePiste for options - either other ways to give money or she can match you to a crafter - in which case, you buy a ball of wool online to be delivered to another mner.

Pancake, I do. I love feeling like one small part of the collective effort iyswim

Soupy, you're right. All patterns/motifs is a bit overwhelming. Blankets where there is some peace in the form of plain squares are much easier on the eye

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Thu 25-Oct-12 14:23:58

Sand, it takes a caring person to find spare cash, too thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 14:24:28

Thank you all thanks I am just coming to everyone.

Well said Soupy X

Lovely MrsK - you are a Blanketeer with a heart of gold, and you are right the donors play a full part in Woolly Hugs. Every donation is special and important, it really is. We honestly couldn't function without them, and we just want everyone to be able to take part if they wish to. Proper team work. We can't function without one or the other, both as important and central as the wool itself.

issimma Thu 25-Oct-12 14:26:38

Done. Just wish it could be more.
Go knitters!

It's so true about the donors, if we didn't have them there would be crafters who couldn't take part because of the cost of the wool. This way makes it possible for lots more people to contribute.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 14:30:01

Pidj is right SandWitch. Big hearted folk the Blanketeers, donors and crafters alike. thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 14:32:47

issimma Bless you, thank you, it has arrived safely, you are very kind, that will enable someone to take part who otherwise couldn't. That is a fabulously generous thing to do in my mind. Your crafter will make squares on behalf of you both.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 14:38:56

Thats exactly it WhoKnows - we don't want anyone to feel they can't take part because of costs. The blankets are made to show love, compassion and support to another, how sad if you felt shut out because of the cost.

So we [heart] the donors, Big Time. End of. smile

Still doing PMs brew

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 15:11:17

More fabulous donors to thank this afternoon, your donations have arrived safely with us and we give you our heartfelt thanks, we appreciate these donations so much. I wish I knew how to knit. A scrunched knot I pressume won't be very easy to place!?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 15:38:44

smile Starlight - Youtube is your friend, there are lots of fab tutorials, but a scrunched up knot made with love in its heart would be very special smile

And we have the lovelies on this thread here who are very helpful for beginner knitters.

LemonEmmaP Thu 25-Oct-12 15:56:35

I can't knit (yet!) so have made a donation via Woolly Hugs website. I am so sad to read about Beatrice, whose story has touched me deeply. Sent with love xx

Where are you, starlight? There may be a mumsnetters near you who would teach you to knit - I will, if you are in the Glasgow area. Or you could look for a local knitting group, and see if they will, help you.

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Thu 25-Oct-12 16:05:23

We also have a thread for asking daft crochet questions smile

I'm Very Southern and also happy to meet for coffee and crochet help

Mermaidspam Thu 25-Oct-12 16:07:57

Have pm'd you Pistey, sign me up with great love to the teaset

Right, I've placed my order for wool so needles will get klicking whenever it arrives.
Do please expect plain sqaure/s from me...

The Wolly Hugs threads have often reduced me to tears and I feel a sense of relief to have finally committed to one.
It is just so heartbreakingly sad that a blanket is needed with such regularity sad.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 17:05:38

Bless you Pacific, we are very glad to have you on board thanks

And we have more donors to thank this afternoon, your donations have arrived safely and we give you our sincere heartfelt thanks - I know I have already said this today, but it just needs reiterating, you have enabled someone to take part who otherwise maybe couldn't. That is a fabulously generous thing to do. We are so glad to have you with us. thanks

thanks to you all, you are proper Blanketeers with hearts of gold.

GlaikitFizZombie Thu 25-Oct-12 17:18:23

Starlight I learned fro. You tube and these lovely ladies. If I can do it anyone can!

I love my donors! I always knit with them in mind. Some have also put in 'requests' which are great (and they encourage me to knit things I wouldn't usually attempt)

I'm in, have PM'd Pistey and had a reply really quickly, have ordered wool, am borrowing needles from my mother as I have just moved house and everything is still in boxes. I am determined to make squares though, Beatrice, Cup, Mr Cup and the lovely girls who form the Teaset have totally touched my heart.

Butterflies might also be a suggested pattern as that's how Mr Cup referred to Bea on Twitter when he told us that she had died

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Oct-12 18:16:09

Evening , lovely woolly folk smile

It is so nice to return home from work to see such support . You are all complete [stars] thanks

PiggyPlumPie Thu 25-Oct-12 19:06:03

Have come back from holiday to this sad news... Will pick up the needles again sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 19:22:30

Butterflies sound lovely too then Gleaming thanks

And yes, what a response we have had yesterday and today, quite blows you away, so humbling and touching. Just awesome.

I am back to sort PMs, thanks to all X

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Oct-12 20:31:47

Big [thumbs up] to butterflies. How lovely.

GlaikitFizZombie Thu 25-Oct-12 20:43:06

SDTG, prettybird, hairypotter are we still meeting up on Monday??

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 20:44:58

Just found a simple, and I really mean that, crochet daisy pattern, really cute.

Link is here I shall add it to the website in a mo. If anyone has cream and would like a bit of our yellow for something like this, do PM me, and I can pop some in the post. thanks

SoupDragon Thu 25-Oct-12 21:04:20

I already have cream and yellow smile

SoupDragon Thu 25-Oct-12 21:27:31
KnottyLocks Thu 25-Oct-12 21:42:31

That's very cute, Soupy. smile

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Oct-12 21:44:40

Have had a message from Cup. She is very honoured to be receiving a blanket

SoupDragon Thu 25-Oct-12 21:44:51

It was a nice break from the 4 times I've frogged the square I was trying to make grin

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul Thu 25-Oct-12 22:36:52

Oh bless Cup's heart.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 25-Oct-12 22:56:05

outtolunchagain Thu 25-Oct-12 23:01:08

That Daisy is lovely , it really looks a bit like a Primrose as well . I wish I could crochet but will stick to the knitting I think there are others much more capable on the flower front.

I will PM you Pistey. I can knit squares.

I am knitting my own daughter a patchwork blanket for her cot, she is 2 months older than Bea.
I have tears in my squares tonight.

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 07:59:43

For Beatrice's bunting, I made these primroses - just the flower and with no beads. They were really easy too.

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:01:30

If I make a batch of primroses (as I already have the right yellow from Hug donations) shall I stick them in loose with my squares for embellishments?

Or I can make plain squares and put them on.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:06:49

Morning brew

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:08:05

Soupy, send them loose and I can scatter them over the blanket smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 08:08:58

Bless her heart, I am honoured to be helping make this for Cup, she and her family have touched the lives of so many. I am so glad that we can now all come together and do this for her to show our love and support. The response has been quite extraordinary. But that is rightly so, she is quite an extraordinary person. I feel confident she will feel the outpouring of love from her woolly hug. Bless her heart indeed. X

Thank you, just replying to all PMs, welcome to those joining us, we are so glad to have you on board thanks

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:10:09

Knotty, perfect. They're easy to do as a break from frogging my nemesis cream square grin

Morning knotty. brew

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:10:40

I've found my crochet flower book so also have a viola and daisy pattern. Oh and a bee smile

saffronwblue Fri 26-Oct-12 08:11:32

I love this thread although I wish it did not have to exist. I can almost hear the needles clicking (is that what they do?). The love and support for the Teaset is palpable.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 08:11:44

I've made one daisy smile

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:12:26

I have plans to create a bee similar to the bear/owl squares I've done before.

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:13:15

I've only done one too, Pistey - I think it took longer to faff about with the ends then it did to make the actual daisy!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 08:13:22

Soupy - that will be adorable X

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:13:34

Soupy, that would be perfect. I have a little dark brown I can send you if you need it.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 08:14:00

Yes it did!

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:14:10

Knotty - should I leave the last yellow tail long on the primroses for sewing on?

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:14:25

Saffron, I totally agree with you.

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:15:02

I'm pretty sure I have a brown - I can't remember which of the two original brands it is but it was called Truffle!

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:15:45

Yes please, Soupy. Long ends make life easier fir flowers.

But! For squares, can everyone sew those pesky ends in , pretty please smile

SoupDragon Fri 26-Oct-12 08:17:13

I wish I'd thought about it when finishing off the daisy grin

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:19:22

Tbh I probably have little bits of nearly every colour here so I can stitch things on if necessary.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 08:20:34

You mentioning Truffle has made me want chocolate now.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 08:33:02

Morning all brew

bigsnugglebunny Fri 26-Oct-12 09:30:20

I've ordered the wool, so as soon as it arrives I'll start knitting. Stocking stitch squares will probably be what I'll send, as I'm still quite new to this knitting malarky. smile

pixiestix Fri 26-Oct-12 10:48:10

Thank you to my lovely, lovely donor. My beautiful purple wool arrived this morning smile thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 11:04:10

And so the wool arrives with crafters smile Fantastic news, well done the donors thanks

Morning, all! Still waiting for my wool...

Cup, participating in this blanket is, in part, a way to relieve my helplessness in making anything better for you, my love sad.
Honoured - ha! How I wish that particular honour were not necessary...

Oh, and great daisies - they do look like Primroses smile

can I just ask, if I am knitting daisies shall i do the "white" of the daisy in cream or can I use white ?

MummyDuckAndDuckling Fri 26-Oct-12 12:05:53

My lovely wool just arrived from * RatherBeOnThePiste* thanks smile

Can't wait to get started now

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 12:15:09

We can cope with a daisy or two in White but need to be careful so as not to let it make the cream look dirty iyswim

I will stick to cream then, might look softer anyway.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 12:43:22

Thanks smile

Some lovely 'sky pink' wool just came through my letterbox, many thanks to my donor x

Just went into my local store to buy some wool, I had set my heart on pink for little Bea. I was rooting around and found two balls at the back of the cubby hole. Went to the till to pay, happy to have have pink wool, even if the band was hanging off. Lady instantly reduced it from £5.50 to £3 without me even asking. Maybe she knew it was for a precious project.

My wool arrived today, thank you to my donor, whovever you are. You've picked such lovely colours.

I will start on my squares tonight, thinking of Bea as I work.

MOSagain Fri 26-Oct-12 15:24:02

I've bought the wool for Bea's square and finished the square I was doing for the mini hug but just can't seem to start this one. I suppose starting it makes it more real if that makes sense? sad

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 15:33:11

It does, MOS sad

But I know that every stitch you do will be made thinking of Bea and Cup, and made with love.

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname Fri 26-Oct-12 16:24:03

Have PMed you, Pistey. I will need some wool but would love to crochet some squares. X

AnnaKissed Fri 26-Oct-12 16:45:20

Waiting for my wool to reach me out here in the middle east... Exciting!

How does it work, do I just knit what I fancy within the guidelines in the OP? I'd like to have a go at a flower from the patterns on the websites.

AnnaKissed Fri 26-Oct-12 16:47:37

Sorry "exciting" is the wrong word to use - insensitive of me. I'm just honoured to be part of a community that does things like this.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 16:48:14

That's exactly how it works, Anna. The ideas in the Op are there because those motifs are symbolic to the family. The crafting guide patterns are there to support our crafters. You can make whatever you like really smile

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 16:49:45

Within reason obviously smile

EverythingInMjiniature Fri 26-Oct-12 16:51:21

Wool people just rang me and said they didn't have one of the colours I ordered in stock, have replaced it with a similar colour but there may be a delay in it getting to my knitter because of this, so sorry!

trumpton Fri 26-Oct-12 17:16:51

I came across this today....
' When it seems that our sorrow is too great to be bourne,
Let us think of the great family of heavy-hearted
into which our grief has given us entrance, and inevitably,
we will feel about us their arms, their empathy, their understanding and their love.'

Helen Keller

Every stich is a stitch of love.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 17:42:49

That is beautiful Trumpton, thank you X

Wool is on its way to the Middle East for you Anna, so glad our international Blanketeers are with us and expanding in number. We cover all quarters of the globe. What an awe inspiring thought. Our little woolly community. smile

I am away to do PMs and then there are thank yous coming tonight. It has been a very busy day in the world of wool. thanks

No apologies needed Everything, just gives them more time to plan something lovely thanks

Somersaults Fri 26-Oct-12 17:58:52

Thank you to my donor for the beautiful sky pink wool which I have returned home to find this evening. I will do my utmost to make us both proud with beautiful squares.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 18:04:02

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 18:05:48

Quite a lot of the woolly wool arriving today has been bought on behalf of the lovely donors who sent us funds through Paypal, huge thanks to them once again Xx

Hi, is it too late to make a contribution? My mum would like to knit a square on my behalf but we can't get started until Monday, are squares still needed?

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 19:59:20

Not too late at all smile

Wooly wool ordered and winging it's way to the lovely fan xx

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 20:06:35

Just away to PMs, huge thanks to everyone thanks

pearlgirl Fri 26-Oct-12 20:10:21

I would also like to knit - will it be ok if I get wool at the beginning of next week.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 20:21:20

pearlgirl my lovely, you have mail thanks Glad to have you on board smile

ChippingInLovesAutumn Fri 26-Oct-12 20:30:34

I just want to hold Cup and take away the pain for her, I can't stop crying for them all. It's a sad day for me anyway the 24th, then last year little Mia made it that much more sad and now this year Bea - it's not bloody fair sad

One year, one month, one week & one day - what a lot of love that little girl spread in such a short time - she will be missed.

It really touches me when posters who have (sadly) had blankets made for them come onto these threads - whether it's to knit/crochet, donate or just to send their love - there's just something very special about it and it adds another layer of hugs to all of the blankets.

I'll PM you Pistey - just to keep your records straight.

ChippingInLovesAutumn Fri 26-Oct-12 20:39:33

Also <while I'm pouring my heart out on MN>... it is really special that people who don't knit/crochet decide to learn just so they can contribute to the Woolly Hugs - there is so much love & support here... not bad for a nest of vipers huh!

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Oct-12 20:49:10

Not so viperish at all, Chip smile

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor Fri 26-Oct-12 21:08:38

Vipers with wooly jackets

Thanks Pistey, my yellow wool turned up today accompanied by a curly wurly which I have hidden from DH and DD. Will get cracking on something flowery this weekend.

Somersaults Fri 26-Oct-12 21:27:16

Vipers shmipers.

Woolly Hugs shows the innate goodness of MN. It shows that, no matter what people think or say, we damn well care about each other. When it truly boils down to it we are there to support each other in whatever way we can. We do the best for each other and while we may appear to have big mouths, we also have very big hearts.

<wonders about knitting a nest of vipers>

GlaikitFizZombie Fri 26-Oct-12 21:59:11

Droit, you can do the dragon please I have not the patience not the skill!

I could probably manage a viper actually! No legs

Four4me Fri 26-Oct-12 22:00:12

pistey Pleased the money made it safely and yes it was my scribbly writing on the envelope for cup. Just glad to contribute to something so wonderful. Feel like it is a cop out really as no skill required!!!! Promise to learn to knit/crochet when (here come the excusey bit) I haven't got four dc at home for half term and two of them about to have minor day surgery.

Loving the vipers in woolly jackets (and crochet hats)!!!!!!!!!!

What colour/s are the wings?

HocusPocusPigInACaldron Fri 26-Oct-12 22:12:33

Oh my goodness, i was thinking, i'm a bit skint this week i can't send more wool.

Then i read cupoftea's thread. I am in bits, i have never cried so much at a post on here.

I have some stuff ending on ebay this weekend, please match me to someone Pistey and i'll send wool with some of the proceeds on Monday, cupoftea's need is far, far greater than mine.

Thinking of Cup, Beatrice and the family.

I'll pm you too.

GlaikitFizZombie Fri 26-Oct-12 22:16:39

They are the red from the attic 24 pack and patons fab in rio. I also didn't have small enough needles so its knitted on 4mm and in stocking stitch not the fancy one in the pattern.

Maybe a tag team effort isn't such a good idea seeing as I have already used artistic licence!! I'll try again, I got quite far for a first attempt, I'm just not sure where I went wrong confused

Oh I'm so glad it won't be too late and I will be able to contribute. X

Have another go and see how you get on - I'm sure you can do it! <waves pom poms>

Have crocheted 2 squares today.

Love to the teaset.

trumpton Sat 27-Oct-12 07:53:14

Can anyone tell me what shade of yellow Debbie Bliss we are using . Thank you .

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 27-Oct-12 08:26:18

Lots of PMs, I am away there now. Trumpton, I will go and have a look at the yellow, but it may be a discontinued one, it was the one that Black Sheep donated to us, I can happily send some to you though. I will PM you in a mo my lovely.

Pistey, sorry to bother you but not sure my PM got through as no reply that I can find ., sent Thursday pmHope it's still OK to participate , have wool ,but wondered what the deadline for sending you the squares is

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 27-Oct-12 10:18:08

sad No, but I have you now smile I think my PM box fell over in the end, but it seems fine again now. I have a theory that if 2 PMs are sent at the same time, only one can get through, I'm not sure if that is true, but it seems so anyway.

No deadline as yet, but it is usually 3 weeks or so, and it is much more than OK to participate, we are very glad to have you on board. Thank you thanks

Tuttutitlookslikerain Sat 27-Oct-12 13:44:50

My wool arrived this morning. I am just off to drop DS2 at the station so he can go to the cinema and I shall start on my squares.

I've found this pattern to crochet. It's called butterfly garden and it looks a little like there are a dozen butterflies in it. It's just a bigger pattern than 6inch so I'm hoping with a smaller hook and less edging I might be able to make it work... Fingers crossed because I think it's perfect for Bea.

I was only saying to my MIL this week that I would like to start knitting again.

I will get some wool and needles and do a square.

Much love to CupOfTea and the Teaset...

Thinking of you xxxx

For Woolly huggers in the Glasgow area - we are having a knitting meet up on Monday - apologies for the late notice, I had forgotten about this. blush Thread with details here. The more the merrier!

Though merrier may not be the best choice of wording - sorry. blush

SecretCervix Sat 27-Oct-12 17:15:18

I would love to donate some wool if someone could PM me.

Tweetinat Sat 27-Oct-12 17:53:56

No wool arrived today, but hopefully in time for meeting the Glasgow Woolly Huggers <<fingers crossed>>

Hi, SDTG <waves>

Trazzletoes Sat 27-Oct-12 19:31:01

Hi, I'd love to contribute. I'm just starting on the journey of crochet grin but hoping to do my first granny square tonight... If it works I'll order some of the right wool. If it doesn't, I'll, er, blush donate.

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Sat 27-Oct-12 19:37:19

Come along for a brew if you have technical questions, Trazzle - that goes for all the crocheters

Trazzletoes Sat 27-Oct-12 19:39:36

Thanks pidj.

ouryve Sat 27-Oct-12 20:15:27

My wool arrived this morning (Get Knitted have some of the Cashmerino on sale) and I managed to cast on and start a square, this evening. Only managed an inch, though, because DS2 was sat on my knee muttering "wool" and "knitting" - which for DS2 is pretty amazing smile

Just a question for regular woolly huggers - sew in ends or leave long to use for sewing up?

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Oct-12 20:20:10

Sew in pesky ends, please smile

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Oct-12 20:20:39

DS2 sounds a poppet smile

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Oct-12 20:24:22

<waves to Trazzle> smile

ouryve Sat 27-Oct-12 20:53:16

Cheer Knotty

I've crocheted some pink flowers, I can send them loose so they can go on different coloured squares, or knit a plain square to put them on myself if you prefer everything sent 'finished'.

ouryve Sat 27-Oct-12 20:54:00

Cheers, even blush

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Oct-12 20:56:03

Ria, up to you. I'm more than happy to add them this end. In my head at the moment, I have a lovely image of a blanket scattered with flowers.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Sat 27-Oct-12 21:03:39

There is a Glasgow meet...? grin

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Sat 27-Oct-12 21:05:03

Ooh, like a meadow, Knotty! Or an Elysian field thanks

KnottyLocks Sat 27-Oct-12 21:12:54

Yes, Pidj. Just like a meadow smile

Trazzletoes Sat 27-Oct-12 21:16:58

I haven't started yet. DS is refusing to sleep "because his body doesnt think it's tired" angry

Somersaults Sat 27-Oct-12 21:20:47

I've finished my first square for little Bea. It's the butterfly garden pattern I linked to somewhere in a soft delicate pink and I love it. I think it's perfect for Bea.

MummyDuck, Glasgow meet-up info here

Lovely ball of mauve arrived yesterday, bought from love knitting because I fell in love with the Heart Ended knitting needles. Perfect for knitting squares with love.

I have finished my plain square and need some ideas for the fancy one, so off to search.

After seeing this thread last night, I read cupofteaplease's beautiful tribute to her daughter and have shed more than a few tears.
What an inspiring, incredible mum, my heart goes out to her and the rest of the teaset and I'd be proud to be involved.
I've pm'd pistey.

Just wondering if my wool has turned up at its destination?

Tweetinat Sun 28-Oct-12 11:31:59

Knotty - trying to decide what to do and don't know if its easier for you to have a couple of squares the same or different? I can probably squeeze three squares out of my wool and want to do what's best for you!

HocusPocusPigInACaldron Sun 28-Oct-12 12:02:51

Wool ordered today, hopefully be with my knitter Tuesday or Wednesday.

It's a lovely deep pink and i know it will be made into something lovely.

Right. Off to PMs thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 28-Oct-12 12:24:20

From the lovely Pannetone

I would like to donate money for a crafter to knit a square. Can we have a 'candle' square on the blanket (for the 'This little Light of Mine' song the Teaset sang with Beatrice)

I know we have some lovely knitters who could do this beautifully. Is there anyone who would research a pattern and make this for Cup's blanket? Bless Pannetone, I have the money already so can pots on wool to a crafter tomorrow.

Maybe PM me if you can help. Thank you X

mopale Sun 28-Oct-12 12:33:49

I've been away with little internet access. I've seen the sad news but have been unable to volunteer before now.

Am I too late or can I knit a couple of squares? If so I'll order wool later. Will pm too.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 28-Oct-12 19:02:43

Not too late at all my lovely, we'd be glad to have you on board, I shall come to you now thanks

Somersaults Sun 28-Oct-12 20:47:10

Finished squares are here and here. The artificial light hasn't done e beautiful pink colour of the wool justice. I have some wool left but not sure if its enough to do another square. I'll weigh it later and if not I can make lots of little flowers maybe?

They are beautiful Somersaults

Somersaults Sun 28-Oct-12 21:13:35

Why thank you smile

Really pretty Somersaults smile

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor Sun 28-Oct-12 22:24:05

I tried to make this pattern up for the whole of yesterday evening and failed miserably. For some reason I got it right first time this evening smile

bobkate Sun 28-Oct-12 22:26:00

Thanks so much to my donor - a beautiful deep rose pink Debbie Bliss ball of joy appeared on my doorstep on Friday morning, before I was lucky enough to go away with my girlie friends for the weekend. I took it with me but didn't have time to get started until this morning. Car broke down so had to be towed 3 hours my square was started in the cab of the recovery truck grin. So not such a bad thing after all!! grin

bobkate Sun 28-Oct-12 22:27:13

And oh my word - Somersaults and Zombie....woweeeee. They are fabulous smile

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul Sun 28-Oct-12 22:28:53

Off to PMs thanks

Trazzletoes Mon 29-Oct-12 07:29:31

Wow Somersaults and Zombie <faints in amazement at talent>

Woolfey Mon 29-Oct-12 07:50:04

Trazzle - so well put!
Zombie - That is such a cute little bee smile
Somersaults - They are really beautiful squares
<gets her crochet hook out to do some serious practice>

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor Mon 29-Oct-12 07:50:23

Why thank you smile

Although it's not really talent. Once you can make a simple shape it's relatively straightforward, especially if you've squared off circles and crocheted on to a shape before (I learnt with the Bear Squares I do). I wouldn't know where to start with making up something complicated! grin

I probably need to work the pattern out and write it down.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 29-Oct-12 07:51:57

<helps trazzle up>

Yes, write it down!

KnottyLocks Mon 29-Oct-12 08:25:15

BigBroomstickBIWI Mon 29-Oct-12 08:58:55

Morning! brew

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Mon 29-Oct-12 09:09:33

Morning. I've finished one square. Hoping to get another done soon. Would have done one last night but dd1 has been ill and pretty much covered the house in sick (and that's when my washer decided to go on the blink). Managed to unblock the pipe today so will get on with squares after getting rid of all the washing! Do we have a last posting date?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 29-Oct-12 11:18:09

crafty Your poor DD, and you too! Hope she is better soon, and that no one else gets the bug.

Not as yet on the last posting date - but it will be a good couple of weeks yet.

She seems a lot better today Pistey. I'm hoping that it was the yogurts she'd had yesterday morning and not a bug as I could really do with not having a bug going round us all this week!

Pastabee Mon 29-Oct-12 12:34:51

<smugness abates at sight of DD pulling all washing off maiden>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 29-Oct-12 13:17:06

MOSagain Mon 29-Oct-12 14:19:25

normal address?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 29-Oct-12 15:00:51

Please lovely X

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 29-Oct-12 16:19:20

Hello, hoping to do square tonight. Can someone tell me roughly how many chains they do for a 6inch square using a 5mm hook? smile

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname Mon 29-Oct-12 16:51:39

thanks Pistey. Will pm you once I receive it. X

PurpleFrog Mon 29-Oct-12 16:56:34

I would like to join in too, for this blanket. I already have some lovely purple Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK.... I just have to decide what to do with it!

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Mon 29-Oct-12 17:31:59

MummyDuck, 4mm is better for this wool, 5 might come up a bit lacy?

For a square of rows on a 4mm hook, ch28 tc in 3rd from hook and across should do it thanks

Mermaidspam Mon 29-Oct-12 17:33:08

Sorry pistey, no wool delivery today x

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 29-Oct-12 17:33:43

Ah yes, 4mm would be much better thanks smile

Hi. i can donate wool if needed x

Managed to get a square done while kids played nicely smile. Will post them sometime this week.

here if anyone wants to see it

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 29-Oct-12 17:48:04

Crafty - that is very pretty smile Just perfect.

Thank you Mermaid, your donor is chasing it up with them now.

Purplefrog - we are very glad to have you on board, I am just going to PM you, and thank you Tom I shall PM you too. I am away to my inbox, the red light is on. Thank you to everyone, it has been another busy day in the woolly world of wool today. Heartfelt thanks to all thanks

EverythingInMjiniature Mon 29-Oct-12 17:52:47

Wool is on its way to my donor, thankyou for being talented and taking the time to knit squares thanks

No wool today sad, but in some kind of insane displacement activity I have unravled something I starte last winter to make another scarf-type thing - needed to have some wool and needles in my bag to justify my attendance at the Glasgow meet. And lovely it was too, albeit short as I had to remove my terrors offspring before they broke something or we were thrown out blush.

I am now getting nervous I am going to miss the deadline?

KnottyLocks Mon 29-Oct-12 19:44:27

Dogwood, the deadline won't be fir at least a couple of weeks so noneed to worry smile

KnottyLocks Mon 29-Oct-12 19:45:01

Despite my illiterate phone confused

Tweetinat Mon 29-Oct-12 20:25:38

Gorgeous squares so far! I've just stumbled across the most lovely butterfly granny square but as I've started mine I won't have the wool to make it. Hoping this may be useful to someone waiting for wool:

Sorry for non-clickable link - doesn't seem possible from the app.

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Mon 29-Oct-12 21:04:05

Apparently my lovely wool from my lovely donor wtw is on its way. I have also ordered that black to go with the yellow you sent me pistey hopefully it will all be here very soon so I can get cracking on with this before saturday. I have a great idea for the square and just hope it works out well.

pidj thats a great link. amazing square!

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Mon 29-Oct-12 21:30:36

It's Tweeti's link, i just clickied it!

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 29-Oct-12 21:43:13

This wool is so lovely and soft, it keeps slipping off the hook! I'm not used to using such quality grin

Somersaults Mon 29-Oct-12 21:45:47

I've done this butterfly with my left over yarn. Should I do a few more of these with the rest of the pink or do some little flowers instead? Also any ideas on how to make the body that are simple (very simple) would be appreciated. The pattern suggests a pipecleaner but that sounds incredibly unblankety to me!

Trazzletoes Mon 29-Oct-12 22:23:23

Somersaults, that's beautiful!

Jules146 Mon 29-Oct-12 22:26:24

My squares ready for posting tomorrow (hsmile)

Jules146 Mon 29-Oct-12 22:27:01

smile even!!

Jules146 Mon 29-Oct-12 22:30:07

somersaults that tis lovely smile

Somersaults This butterfly has a crochet body which might work?

KnottyLocks Mon 29-Oct-12 22:46:22

Jules, gorgeous squares as always smile

Ria, was just coming on to suggest something similar to that butterfly body. You beat me to it! smile

My squares and flowers will be in the post tomorrow (I still have the address). Picture should be on my profile.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 29-Oct-12 22:58:45

Hope link works blush. Just finished square smile

Somersaults Mon 29-Oct-12 23:17:59

Such gorgeous squares from everyone. This blanket is going to be absolutely beautiful.

Ria that looks like it might work. I have a few scraps of contrasting yarn so I'll have a play around tomorrow and see what works.

I'm up late having got stuck into squares for other hugs tonight but must go to bed now as since the clocks changed DD thinks 4.30am is getting up time. Sleep tight everyone. And spare an extra prayer for Cup tonight if you can because tomorrow will be a hard day.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 29-Oct-12 23:24:25

I thought about Beatrice the whole time I was crocheting the square sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 30-Oct-12 08:53:15

Morning all smile

I love the butterflies!

And the squares are so beautiful. thanks

MummyDuckling - squares made with love and thought are what it is all about, they are the heart of the blanket, and are very precious indeed.

Thank you Somersaults, yes, thinking about them all such a lot, particularly today, sending them love and strength.

My PM box is calling me, thank you to everyone X

Love all the crochet squares and butterflies, really need to try and teach myself. I used to do squares as a kid, but not properly, couldn't read a pattern.
Anyway have finished my squares and have made some individual flowers, with more to be made tonight. DD saw them this morning, and or course she wanted them (very girly) so I told her they were for a precious little girl that had gone to be a star, she told me I had to make more pretty things for this little girl so she had lots (sniff)
Should the flowers be blocked, as at the moment they are just all curled up ? might be easier to attatch to the blanket ?

Vajazzler Tue 30-Oct-12 10:51:26

Wow everyones squares are beautiful smile
My donated wool arrived today and its exactly the same colour as the wool i bought to practice with so whoever sent it has the same great taste as me grin Thanks to the lovely mumsnetter who sent wool to a postcode starting WS2 thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 30-Oct-12 10:59:33

Beautiful squares, folks smile thank you so much thanks

Re. Blocking. No need to do this before sending. We find it's easier to put together the blankets if the squares aren't blocked . More wiggleability smile If you send flowers , same applies. We can block them at this end if needed. Thanks.

MOSagain Tue 30-Oct-12 12:22:27

<mos wonders what on earth blocking is?>
posted my square this morning x

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 30-Oct-12 13:27:56

MOS - Blocking is a way of shaping your work when you are finished. You can spray with water or wash it and then pin it to shape, or you can do this with a gentle iron. Either way it makes it harder for hooking together which is why it is best avoided.

So keep water and irons away from your lovely squares MOS and all is well smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 30-Oct-12 13:35:44

Beautiful squares have arrived safely for the beautiful Cup this morning, heartfelt thanks thanks

thanks Pastabee Beautiful crochet in purple, green and cream, just lovely [star]

thanks bluesky These are more than OK, thank you smile Beautiful crocheted grannies and solid squares in purples [star]

thanks Two cards have also arrived safely, one in a pale blue envelope, and the other came in a brown envelope with one for My5 from Chester/North Wales way, thank you so much. We will keep these safely thanks

You are all stars, thank you thanksthanksthanksthanksthanks

I was going to ask re: blocking so handy to know (had a feeling from before that that was the case).
Also, totally OT but Knotty is your NN a hair reference?

soremummy Tue 30-Oct-12 17:53:01

Two squares completed now so will work on some more with left over wool.

outtolunchagain Tue 30-Oct-12 18:20:38

I also wondered about borders , do you prefer squares with or without?

Flojo1979 Tue 30-Oct-12 18:56:13

Gorgeous donor wool has arrived. Lovely plummy purple colour. Thankyou so much x

Ok then.

Still no wool today, so I thought I'd check with Fingers and Thumbs how long they reckon it would be. They had never heard of me - turns out my order never went through due to a 'payment problem'. Spoke to some bloke in India my bank, turns out there had been 'fraudulent activity' on my card which had therefore been cancelled. Good of them to let me know - NOT!

So, sorry. I placed my order just now, paid with PayPal, looks like it has gone through.
Don't you hate it when you join a new quiche and make a right arse of yourself at the very start. Gah!

I am very impressed with all the crocheting and knitting talent here btw.

Thinking of cup every day x.

neverputasockinatoaster Tue 30-Oct-12 19:25:11

Ok, need to ask some numpty questions....

I last knitted 20 odd years ago so today I got some cheapo DK to practise with while I await delivery from cucumberpatch. I cast on 33 stiches but I'm not sure that will give me 6 inches.......

Also I am doing just solid garter stitch and the edge where I have done the first row looks a bit loopy - Is there a cunning way of knitting into the back of the cast on stiches to tighten that up or am I mis remembering that?

Felt a bit odd to sit in the car, waiting to pick up my two, knitting!

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Tue 30-Oct-12 19:31:23

What kind of squares, outtolunch?

Yikes, Pacific, scary situation! Hope it gets sorted soon, and no you haven't embarrassed yourself thanks

Neverput, received wisdom is that you need 5-6 rows of knitting to see how it'll turn out. Also, 5 3/4" is fine because it'll be stretched into shape by surrounding squares - very helpful and kind, our blankets! Loopy bottoms are fine because they'll be hidden by the crochet joins smile

neverputasockinatoaster Tue 30-Oct-12 19:35:58

Thank you PurplePidj........

Will measure up what I have done to see..
I've just been to the woolly hugs website and seen all the ideas for squares!

Once I'm confident with garter again I may have a go at something more complicated........

neverputasockinatoaster I slip the first stitch on every row (and knit the last stitch in the row when I'm purling). This gives a nice neat edge.
