RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 10-Oct-12 16:57:13

With heavy hearts we bring the desperately sad news that My5boysandme has lost her precious baby son Dexter. We have offered to make the family a blanket, and hope it may give whatever comfort it can to them. We are so pleased that they have accepted. My5boysandme sends thanks to all and is very touched by everyone's kindness and compassion. Here is her original thread sad

We send My5boysandme all our love and are so sorry for her loss. We are keeping her family close in our thoughts. X

So once again we are calling on the Blanketeers for help - whether it be donating, knitting or crocheting. Will you join us?

If you would like to help in anyway, please post on this thread but also PM me so we know. If you are able to donate, I can match you up with a crafter, or give you our donating information. I will co ordinate, match and deal with any admin. Knotty is here to answer any questions you may have. Sincere heartfelt thanks once again thanks

As in the past, for consistency, the wools we are using are:
* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)
* Rowan Cashsoft DK
* Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK
* Artesano Superwash Merino DK

4mm knitting needles or hooks
6" squares, as simple or as complex as you like.

The Colours
Greens, blues, silvers, dark/warm purple and cream.
If choosing cream, we ask that you go for the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK 013

Here is our website Do use the Crafting Guide on it to help you with practical info, and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for squares.

Previous blankets can also be seen on the website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' our FB page then you will get all our updates on our progress via your newsfeed.

So sad that another blanket is needed. Sending much love to My5boysandme and her family, and thinking of baby Dexter.

God bless Dexter.

KnottyLocks Wed 10-Oct-12 17:06:15

If you have any questions, please post them on this thread and we'll do our best to answer them

I'm in sad

KnottyLocks Wed 10-Oct-12 17:42:54

Simple squares are good, simple squares are essential smile

A simple knitted garter stitch made with love is as valued as fancier squares.

My5boysandme Wed 10-Oct-12 17:44:08

I'm sat here crying at the generosity of you lovely ladies.

Thank you all so much.

I have posted a photo of my darling Dexter on my profile.

Yes tonight I will be knitting, have just been looking at the knitters guide again.

Click click click smile

Can't wait to get home to see if I have wool!

came home to a lovely woolly parcel, of Debbie Bliss Demin, lovely colour. Thank you Donor thanks

DutchOma Fri 12-Oct-12 17:23:19

I've got two balls, very quickly from Cucumberpatch. Thanks to my donor.

Flojo1979 Fri 12-Oct-12 18:04:18

My local wool shop doesn't stock any of those 4 so I will check out cucumberpatch now then, I wanted to start it today! Don't like waiting for things!

Flojo, John Lewis carries some of these I think, though it's not the cheapest.

Flojo1979 Fri 12-Oct-12 18:16:15

No John Lewis nr me, leafy villages have their downsides!
Just ordered from cucumberpatch, Debbie bliss: sea green and ultramarine, hope these r right colours?

ManifestingMingeHooHoosAgain Fri 12-Oct-12 18:20:05

Cucumberpatch are usually v quick. Often have the right sort of wool in their yarn bargains section.

There's an ebay seller called Aileen's Wool Shop who posts super fast as well.

GlaikitFizZombie Fri 12-Oct-12 18:24:16

I was just about to recommend aileen on eBay! I thinkn she is aileen57 or something like that!

Flojo1979 Fri 12-Oct-12 18:27:59

Ah ok, my local shop has sirdar but not the ones specified.

No John Lewis shock. <Cancels plans to move to leafy village>

Agree Cucumberpatch is usually super speedy.

Somersaults Fri 12-Oct-12 19:16:38

I'm in. I'll pm you in a minute Pistey. So sad to be doing this again but need to help.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 12-Oct-12 19:48:21

Tweet - going great guns there! Will PM you

thanks

Flojo1979 Fri 12-Oct-12 22:14:59

Had a look at Aileens wool shop, she's slightly cheaper than cucumberpatch and seemed to have a better selection of colours in the blues, greens and purple.
But as I've ordered my 2 different balls i'll just have to wait!

I have just been lead to this thread and would love to do a couple of squares. I have just read My5's heart wrenching thread about Dexter and was so sad to hear she was on the "Due in July" thread. I was also due in July but sadly had an MMC at 12 weeks. Let me know if I can help.

tribpot Fri 12-Oct-12 22:43:18

HaveTo - welcome aboard and very sorry to hear of your loss also.

Do you have needles/yarn? Are you planning to knit or to crochet? We have a support thread for each mentioned by Pistey above.

Skoggy Fri 12-Oct-12 23:38:35

I'm just waiting for a few funds to come in and then I'm off to get my yarn. I've got patterns picked out already... and colours. I love making squares. smile

AuntieShirley Sat 13-Oct-12 09:47:02

Flojo1979 Sat 13-Oct-12 10:28:26

GlaikitFizZombie Sat 13-Oct-12 10:48:48

Huh? Whadidido? Eh?

I think Pistey is referring to your bee flashing, Glaikit.

GlaikitFizZombie Sat 13-Oct-12 10:53:54

Oh! Right! I think I took a double dose of my pills yesterday! I'll be on my best behaviour from now on!

Chulita Sat 13-Oct-12 11:26:43

Thank you to my lovely donor, a very soft ball of Ecru tumbled through the letterbox just now. I'll do my best to make up a couple of decent squares on behalf of the two of us.

bobkate Sat 13-Oct-12 11:27:50

Thanks to my lovely donor whoever it may be smile A lovely plummy purple ball of softness landed on the doorstep just now, along with the gas bill. Which do you think I was more delighted to receive? confusedgrin.

And a lot more wool has arrived that we bought on behalf of those who donated funds, another BIG thank you to them X

Much starry starriness... We [heart] our lovely donors.

OK wool has been purchased. I went to Hobycraft which was useless, they had the Debbie wool in about 4 shades of brown ! so walked in the rain to John Lewis which was heaven. Now can't wait for DD to go to bed so I can get started. Off to the knitters support thread.

Flojo1979 Sat 13-Oct-12 22:48:37

Are there knitting patterns anywhere for squares that can be followed....for novices who want to challenge themselves a little more than knit a row purl a row?

ManifestingMingeHooHoosAgain Sat 13-Oct-12 22:51:18

There's some suggestions on the Woolly Hugs site

ManifestingMingeHooHoosAgain Sat 13-Oct-12 22:55:30

Or you can search for dishcloth patterns. Some of have been using patterns from the 200 crochet blocks and 200 knitted blocks books.

ChippingInLovesAutumn Sat 13-Oct-12 23:26:08

My5boys it was really lovely of you to post a photo of Dexter, it's very kind of you to share his photo with us. I have been on your thread (under a brief name change) & my thoughts are with you all the time... I would love to knit a couple of squares of a blanket for you - I only wish we didn't need to, but as we are, each stitch will be made with love.

I'll PM you Pisty.

Very sad that this has happened My5. Much love to you.

Pistey, have pm-ed you. I will do a couple of squares, I have wool.

My wool arrived yesterday, many thanks to my donor, a lovely denim colour.

Do we have a deadline for the squares to be sent off yet?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Oct-12 07:29:46

Lovely Ruby.

I had a beginner lesson in a John Lewis which was good at kick starting me, although I then spent an age on You tube and nagging lovely folk on here, most Knotty, Soupy and Pidj smile

I rate Catherine Hirst, she uses UK terminology (US is different) and I think her tutorials are very clear, although it would be fair to say I have to play them loads of times to work it out.

You need a size 4 crochet hook and some woolly wool.

And the link Pidj has given you is a crochet support thread on here which is full of lovelies who are very patient and will really help you with encouragement and advice. Thread is here

And welcome to Team Hooker wine

Thank you, have replied to PMs, lovely to have you onboard BBB X

Not a deadline yet PKK,but we will come up with one hopefully today, if not, soon thanks

OK thanks, I will probably make a start in them at the weekend

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Oct-12 07:50:41

Sorry Ruby , might help if I actually link to Catherine Hirst

She is here, she does everything for left or right handed

Good luck [fourleafedclover]

Skoggy Tue 16-Oct-12 12:43:48

Ooo... a lovely ball of Apple coloured yarn fell through my letterbox this morning! Thank you for my donation wool! Now I can crack on with hooking my first square. Will order a corresponding yarn colour tomorrow for another square.

Thank you!!!! thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Oct-12 13:23:40

TimeForCake Tue 16-Oct-12 14:37:07

I'll second Pistey's recommendation of Catherine Hirst. I have just done a crochet course run by her - she's lovely, talented & patient! grin

Somersaults Tue 16-Oct-12 19:03:28

I figured out crochet from on here and Catherine Hirst. I just decided I wanted to do it so spent ages watching videos online and pestering Soupy and Pidj on here. I've still never watched a real life person crochet or crocheted with anyone else so it is possible without a first hand demo. Catherine Hirst was my breakthrough. Her videos were really great.

Somersaults Tue 16-Oct-12 19:05:44

Oh and attic24 and this Granny square tutorial on Little Tin Bird were both very helpful too.

Skoggy Tue 16-Oct-12 20:36:24

I'm self taught and only used the Help resources on Ravelry. Didn't watch any vids or anything because the majority of them were well explained. So thats another good resource for learning Crochet. smile

snapacrile Tue 16-Oct-12 21:47:06

I can do a square, got some wool left from last time.
Thoughts are with my5boysandme and her family.

Pm'd you pistey

Teladi Tue 16-Oct-12 22:33:22

The red envelope card is from me, glad it got there safely too. I spent a while on my way to the postbox pondering what happened if you got red-carded by the postman. At my post office they would make you show ID clearly showing that you are, in fact, Mrs Woolly Hugs.

Very impressed by people learning to crochet. Am tempted but it would probably turn out like my attempt at learning to knit....!

KnottyLocks Tue 16-Oct-12 22:35:33

We do actually have ID that says Woolly Hugs grin

We had to both change our names by deed poll though .

PurplePidjin Tue 16-Oct-12 22:45:18

My post people know that i answer to Purple Pidjin, and why. My neighbour also knows it's due to internet anonymity <prays they never google>

Somersaults Tue 16-Oct-12 22:46:07

My wool has arrived from my donor, a lovely purple and sea green. Beautiful colours. Thank you very, very much and I will do my best to make lovely squares from both of us.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 16-Oct-12 23:49:25

She is verrrrrry patient isn't she Cakey?! We can start a Catherine Hirst fan club. Hopefully Ruby will be in it with us grin

Thank you Teladi, I have put it safely for when the time comes thanks

Somersaults - you really will, thank you thanks

and welcome snapacrile - glad to have you on board thanks

NoWayNoHow Wed 17-Oct-12 09:33:19

So, I just realised on the way back from walking DS to school that DH has the car for 2 whole days and that my knitting is in the boot!!

I was so cross with myself that I'd missed the opportunity to get loads down until I realised that he'd actually made a special trip back to the house to return it to me so I can get on with it while he's away!

Now that's true love...

GlaikitFizZombie Wed 17-Oct-12 10:48:36

Aw noway he's a keeper!

Hi,

I'm so sorry to see another blanket is being made sad

I'm not crafty (in a knitting way)

but I would like to donate wool or something?

If anyone needs anything I can buy and post onto you?

TomsBentPinky PM RatherBeOnThePiste and she can let you know how you can help. She's super good at finding people on these threads and contacting them, but if you PM her that will help smile

Welcome aboard. smile

I have cream wool, but it is Rowan Cashsoft DK cream - shade 500 I think. Is this OK or not? I have greens and blues as well if preferable.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 17-Oct-12 15:39:10

Thanks Jules - Rowan cashsoft 500 is fine, I've got some here that I've been using on a Little Hug and just compared the two, tis very close. Thank you for checking though thanks

Lovely woolly treasure has arrived, many thanks indeed, tis all absolutely gorgeoise thanks

thanks RiaOverTheRainbow Just lovely, purple textured knits, and don't worry about the blackberry stitch Ria, if it stretches to 6" then it is fine, and it does smile [star]

thanks DancingShoes Lovely greens, purples, silvers, crochet and knits, flowers and textures, just smashing [star]

Heartfelt thanks indeed X

i've got some of the Rowan Cream 500 too, if you hold a ball of it next to the Debbie Bliss cream you can see a slight difference but it is very close indeed, I couldn't tell which was which from the bits I'd stuck in my wool scrapbook, only by the feel of it.

Skoggy Wed 17-Oct-12 16:23:47

Pistey, did you get my PM? smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 17-Oct-12 18:04:08

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Thu 25-Oct-12 12:20:14

After posts on here i could see who my crafter was and made contact.

Today she has posted a photo to let me see the wonderful squares she has made and i am so pleased, they are fabulous.

It is so wonderful that what starts with click of a mouse to send some wool results in something so lovely that will hopefully bring much comfort to My5.

MmeLindor Thu 25-Oct-12 12:25:44

oh, damn. Sorry, Pistey - I was ill earlier this week and forgot to organise the wool. Do you still need me to send it to the same person, or should I send it somewhere else?

Am happy to donate an extra lot of wool, as penance for my sins.

PM me with an address or two, and I will sort it out today.

Please count me in for this blanket - I will get a square done and sent off ASAP.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 25-Oct-12 12:53:14

Bless you MmeL, you've had a lot going on, hopefully you are feeling better now, no apologies needed, and thank you X thanks

I shall come and help you now smile

And Hokey, I love our little woolly community. Nest of vipers? Not from where I'm standing. The spirit and essence of the blankets right there, that is lovely to read, thank you for posting X

MmeLindor Thu 25-Oct-12 14:23:09

I am really sorry to whoever has been waiting on the wool, it is on its way now.

Pesky RL has been getting in the way shock

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Oct-12 21:24:21

Pesky RL has a habit of doing that.

Thanks, Cat. Bless you smile

Quick message for donors whose rl has delayed their posting plans.
We crafters really appreciate your contributions to the woolly hugs. Many of us could not do our bit without you. Please don't feel guilty about life getting in the way, it just gives us more time to plan what to do (and catch up on the many projects we have on at the same time)
thanks

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Thu 25-Oct-12 22:54:12

I posted some squares to you yesterday Pistey

Mathsdidi Fri 26-Oct-12 10:05:35

I've finished my squares. The photos should be on my profile, sorry they're a bit blurry.

I just need to sew in the ends and they'll be in the post either this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Pastabee Fri 26-Oct-12 11:43:57

Posted. Time for brew and biscuit now.

BarbaraWoohoohoodlouse Fri 26-Oct-12 12:33:02

Question for Fizzy or indeed anyone else who has done, or has thoughts on, a diagonal stripey square. If I do narrow stripes, do I need to cut the wool each time or can I carry it over in some way? Hope that makes sense. TIA smile

Mermaidspam Fri 26-Oct-12 13:21:49

Phew! Lovely wool received today, 2 parcels - 1 ball green and 2 balls purple
Thank you to my wonderful donors
thanks thanks thanks

Mermaidspam Fri 26-Oct-12 13:25:01

Beautiful squares Mathsdidi

GlaikitFizZombie Fri 26-Oct-12 13:31:09

I just carried the wool up the sides Barbara. I did have to break it off when I got to the middle and started the decreases though as it got a bit messy.

Best way is to slightly twist the yarn as you do the first stitch of that row. Top right in this pic is a 3 colour diagonal 2 rows of each colour with the other 2 carried up the sides.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 26-Oct-12 14:16:15

Afternoon all smile

Hello everyone,

Just to let you all know that we're going to move this thread to Arts and Crafts, at the request of the OP.

nickeldaisical Tue 30-Oct-12 16:41:27

oh, where was it before?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 30-Oct-12 16:42:07

And lo

We are moved.

Thanks lovely Kate thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 30-Oct-12 16:47:56

T'was in Chat Nickel, keep up. smile

We start in Chat as it's busy, so lots get to see the thread, but the worry is it will disappear in a puff of smoke after so long, so we get them transferred to A&C where they can be safely tucked up for the long term. Families often like to read them and revisit them, as do crafters and donors.

So here we are. All safe.

brew

PurplePidjInAPointyHat Tue 30-Oct-12 16:55:20

They start in Chat, nickel, for maximum exposure smile

Will be posting my squares tomorrow . Sorry for the delay . Every stitch a stitch of love .

nickeldaisical Tue 30-Oct-12 17:12:30

ah, see.
I always follow my links to it, so never noticed.
I'm glad that you think of that - such a simple gesture, but so meaningful smile

DH has sent mine off. 1st class, so tomorrow fingers crossed.

Tis a bit chilly for maximum exposure!

Ah ! The Harris tweed square. From the 200 knitted blocks book. I thought it was a lovely design for Dexter. I have never done it before but really liked it.

Skoggy Sat 03-Nov-12 15:13:27

I'm so glad they turned up safe and sound. The pattern is called Popcorn Flower by Jan Eaton. smile

thanks

(I'm sat here, on my EDD, bored out of my skull thinking about starting a Little Hug now I'm "part" of the Woolly Hug crafters. grin)

Somersaults Sat 03-Nov-12 15:53:24

Nice to see squares arriving. I posted mine this orient so they should be with you soon.

fraktion Sat 03-Nov-12 16:09:57

I have managed to find some wool (Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK FTW!!!) in Paris. Will try my hardest to knit some (v simple) to post Monday, if international post will allow.

Yay for Parisian wool shops Frak!

Just had a flick through my 200 blocks trumpton very nice I like that one <adds it to list>

PurplePidjin Sat 03-Nov-12 16:41:09

Skoggy, start something complicated, it's bound to bring on labour!

Chulita Sat 03-Nov-12 20:18:43

Ah good, I'm pleased they got there ok. I really hope the leaf pulls straight - I've never knitted anything like that and it looks very wiggly! I also had no idea what psso meant so I kept ending up with 2 stitches too many and then having to k2tog on the next row which is why the stalk doesn't match up <sigh> all part of the charm though right?!

skoggy hope you don't have to wait too much longer!

KnottyLocks Sat 03-Nov-12 20:24:04

Oh yes, we're all about charm smile

grin

Jules146 Sun 04-Nov-12 06:50:59

Trumpton - your Harris tweed square is absolutely stunning, and most definitely a lovely design for Dexter, I've not seen one like it before, couldn't work it out, beautiful colour combi too, you are very clever indeed!!

Is there a link online so we can add it to the Crafting Guide?

soremummy Sun 04-Nov-12 08:00:48

Harris tweed. I hope this is the right one
