RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 03-Aug-12 14:16:43

We have heard the desperately sad news that 3girlies daughter Flora has lost her battle against a brain tumour, she was 6 years old. 3girlies' thread is here

We send 3girlies our love and are so sorry for her loss. She and her family are in our hearts and thoughts X

We have offered to make the family a blanket, and hope it may give whatever comfort it can to them. We are so pleased that they have accepted.

So we are calling out for knitters, crocheters and donors. Can you help us?

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread, and also PM me so we know. I will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with any admin. We now have Paypal to make donating easier for all. So please PM if you would like to join us, or if I can help match you. Knotty will try to answer any queries you may have. Sincere heartfelt thanks. thanks

Once again the wool we are using is:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cash)
* Rowan Cashsoft DK
* Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK
* Artesano Superwash Merino DK

The Colours
Pinks, warm purple, greens, blues, silver, cream
If choosing cream we ask that you go for the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK 013

Flowers please, also initials F, P and L.

4mm needles or hook.

Do use the crafting guide on the website to help you with lots of practical info, and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for squares.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs which are good ways to keep in touch.

But once again, we thank you so much for your support X thanks

I'll be away for the next two weeks from tomorrow, but as long as there are at least three weeks until the posting deadline I'd love to knit a square. I can start this evening as I have some wool left over from the last blanket.

thanks MABS

You are a star X

Count me in. I'm on hols at the moment but should have an order of wool waiting for me when I get home.

bobkate Fri 03-Aug-12 16:40:49

oh my word - that's so very very sad. Only 6 sad so very sorry for your loss 3girlies
Please count me in. I have some wool left in both pinks that my donor sent me for Expat and Giraffes blankets but I don't think there's enough for a square out of each and I don't know how I could mix them both as never used 2 colours before. I have 11grams approx of each...I seem to remember reading somewhere to weigh what's left but not sure how to calculate how many rows that would give me.
Should I send what's left of these current balls with the squares I'll be sending on the 6th for someone else more expert to work their magic with and just ask nicely for a new donor? Not sure what I should do confused

MABS Fri 03-Aug-12 16:47:17

least I can do..

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 03-Aug-12 16:51:43

Decisions bobkate smile

You could get yourself to trib and co on the support thread and they can explain how to make stripes, I can do stripes so it can't be difficult grin

bobkate Fri 03-Aug-12 16:54:17

Cool - well I'll ask Trib and go from there smile

tribpot Fri 03-Aug-12 16:58:41

bobkate, stripes of some kind are nice and simple - whatever you do, don't let Minnie persuade you to try and do two-colour brioche just because she likes the look of it confused wink

I'll start the new thread and then go through it there.

PiggyPlumPie Fri 03-Aug-12 17:10:13

Count me in again sad

tribpot Fri 03-Aug-12 17:11:33

So sorry 3girlies

tribpot Fri 03-Aug-12 17:16:26

Trickle, all are very welcome.

So sad another blanket is needed sad

Pistey, I am happy to donate again. Also happy to donate a design again if you feel that worked quite well?

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 03-Aug-12 17:28:14

Colours for this blanket :

Pinks, warm purple (e.g. Rowan cashsoft 532 vamp) greens, blues, silver (e.g. Rowan cashsoft 505 Mist/534 Blink) and cream. If choosing cream could we ask that you go for Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK 0013

The yarn identified for purple and silver is only to give an idea of colour, this just came up in PMs this afternoon, so thought it might be useful.

Lollipop - will PM you, many thanks everyone thanks

So pleased it has arrived, thanks for updating.

I even think I know who I have been matched with reading the thread!

Thinking of 3girlies.

Pistey, I'm attempting to learn to crochet again. If I can get some wool and good enough before you need the squares, I'll attempt one.

I will also donate just in case my crocheting attempts are not so good!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 07-Aug-12 20:06:53

Hokey - yes I think you can work it out smile

Lollipop will PM you thanks

PurplePidjin Tue 07-Aug-12 20:18:28

Lolli, if it's better for you, do a 5.5" square on a 5mm hook and I'll pop a border on to get the right tension later?

There's a lady in my knitting group with vi and ld (comes with a carer) who knits in dk on 8mm needles smile not the same situation as you, i know, just an example of what determination can get you!

Bwahahaha, I've almost got my chain stitch back (the point I was at last time I tried this). Just need to do a better knot to start so I don't lose it...

Lollipop - I am also crocheting for the first time - shall we hold each other's hands?

PurplePidjin Tue 07-Aug-12 20:48:01

Make a circle with the wool, leaving a good long end - 6" or so.

Use the hook to draw up a loop from the ball side of the wool.

Pull it tight.

Voila, slip knot (not the band)

KnottyLocks Wed 08-Aug-12 08:35:46

Morning smile

I'm currently playing "hunt the crochet hook" in my bag of wool off cuts (from when my lovely gran used to knit, and tried teaching me). I've managed to lose about a 35 stitch chain and the hook in there!

On the plus side, chain stitch is sorted, just need to learn another one so I can do something now - then I'll get some of the recommended wool from the lovely wool lady in town (I like supporting local businesses) and might attempt a granny square - I like the look of them smile

Livelongandprosper Wed 08-Aug-12 12:50:17

My wool has just arrived safely. I'm in Surrey and it was addressed to 'The Mumsnetter at (address) and it is a pale pink ball of loveliness. Thank you to my donor, I'll be starting with it today.

Just seen this and hope I'm not too late?
Can I do a wobbly square?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 21-Aug-12 15:50:14

You're on the list lovely MOS thanks

nickelcognito Tue 21-Aug-12 16:41:41

I've just packaged up two squares.
one in blues, a normal granny; and one in pink and green, which is circles.

It was my first time attempting circles, so I don't think it's very neat.
but I thought the pattern looked flowery, so I wanted to do it.
and it's pink and green which is flowery, too.

nickelcognito Tue 21-Aug-12 16:47:26

it's this pattern - you use the same colour for two rounds to make full circles, but i had to finish it with half-circles, because it was too small.
and i had to change from USto UK stitches.

Mermaidspam Wed 22-Aug-12 19:38:54

Mine are on the way Pistey. Not too sure about one of them but think it might be ok when blocked/stretched/etc.

Somersaults Wed 22-Aug-12 21:50:16

If DH remembers mine will be in the post tomorrow don't hold your breath

nickelcognito Thu 23-Aug-12 11:45:46

Somersaults - same problem here.
we had a discussion about him posting the package on Tuesday.
(discussion was tuesday to post on wednesday)
we closed the shop and i said "you didn't take the squares!"
[blank face from DH]

i made him put it in his bag to take today after work. hmm

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 23-Aug-12 11:47:46

Morning all brew

Well, he remembered! And lots of other things too. I've had a minor op today, in and out this morning, so left him with DD and a million reminders about naptimes, mealtimes, suitable foods and volumes of foods, teat sizes for the expressed milk should she need it, anything and everything I could think of all came tumbling out of my mouth in the car on the way. And he remembered it all (well, she survived and so did he) and he remembered to post the parcel. Major brownie points awarded.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 25-Aug-12 10:12:18

And even more Brownie points Somersaults as they have arrived safely!

Just finished my squares - many thanks to my donor. Squares will be in the post on Tuesday when the PO reopens.

Finished my squares, all 3D flowers. Picture is on profile.

Pistey, quick question - my Mum bless her has done one of the squares and crocheted the granny square wrong side to the flower - a;; tied off etc before I noticed. Will it matter once they are sewn into the blanket?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Aug-12 07:46:52

Morning brew

Dharma - they look just lovely, send them, sure they will be fine thanks

Thanks smile Wasn't sure if I could even find the tied off end to frog it! I think it'll be practically invisible once the seams are crocheted on to it.

goinggoinggoth Wed 29-Aug-12 08:49:25

Hi Piste, has my squares arrived yet? Posted them on Saturday, but forget to message you! blush

Have you not got mine again Pistey? Posted Saturday, white jiffy bag? Note inside on post it (yellow)?

Good luck to the assemblers and best wishes to 3girlies.

You are right moth, it is such a kind thing to do, our donors are Blanketeers with hearts of gold and as much a vital part of the process as those who knit and crochet. Tis proper team work. We honestly couldn't manage without them, the blanket projects just wouldn't happen. And you are right, it was a great colour! thanks

I know the granny square is a bit too small, sorry. But it is the second thing I have ever crocheted in my life so I thought one of you might kindly make it a bit bigger for me blush

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 19-Sep-12 14:42:41

Awww, tis cute! I'll make it bigger for you smile

PurplePidjin Wed 19-Sep-12 15:51:50

Whoop, go Pistey, confidence and skills at an all time high! grin

Too small is definitely easier to fix than too big smile

I thought too small better than too big. For crochet at least fnar fnarr

Pistey i sent over two cards, one for 3girlies and one for mumof2, they should have arrived yesterday in a brown envelope.

Apologies, i meant to pop in a little note for you to say thank you, but i forgot it!

So thanks for giving me the opportunity to let them know they are in my thoughts.

We are really glad that the very lovely 3girlies and her family have their Woolly Hug. Bless them, 3g has written a message to all, and there is a link below to the website to see pictures of the finished Hug. It was sent with much love from us all, we are thinking of Flora. X

"I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to our lovely blanket. I wanted to wait until Flora's sisters came home from school so we could open it together, we are just overwhelmed! It is so beautiful, we have so enjoyed picking out the initials and Flora's name, also managed to identify some of the flowers, don't think we have taken in every detail yet, I sure we will notice other wonders later. We are all thrilled with it including Flora's Dad, we can't believe how many total strangers spent so much time creating such a beautiful memorial.

It does not feel enough just to say thanks, we are so moved by this.

3g and family. X"

Beautiful, beautiful blanket and I have spotted my flowers! So pleased to be involved with this (and all of them)
