A Blanket for Expat: Sign up thread for donors, knitters and crocheters.

It is with deep sadness that I'm starting this thread asking for your support.

Aillidh passed away on Saturday evening, in peace and surrounded by love.
Many of us have followed Aillidh's journey, our hearts touched by this brave and beautiful little girl. She will live long in our memories.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Aillidh, Expat and their family.

As part of this project, we will also be making a blanket for Giraffescantdance. Since Aillidh's diagnosis, Giraffe's has been a constant support and the most remarkable friend to Expat. She has walked this journey beside her and continues to do so, sadly understanding it only too well as she, like Expat, has experienced the devastating loss of a beloved daughter. Our thoughts are with her, as well as our thanks.

We hope that the blankets may give whatever comfort they can to them all.

So, we need knitters, crocheters and donors.
If you would like to donate wool, then we will try match you with a crafter.
We think that there may be wool still in circulation because of the current blanket project. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares, in some cases more. We now have a Paypal facility to make this easier for all.
Whatever way you'd like to be involved, please PM Pistey: it really helps us to know how many people are involved. Thanks

If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can hopefully send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

* or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

* 4mm knitting needles or hooks

* knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

* 6" squares

The two new yarns we introduced recently:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Pinks, blues, greens, warm purples, silvers and cream (preferably Debbie Bliss 013, if possible)

Ideas for squares:

The initials A, L, S , R and E

Aillidh loved all things girly, so any motifs that reflect this would be wonderful.
Plus roses and bears

Please don't feel daunted by any of the ideas as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen here on the Woolly Hugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' our Facebook page, you'll be updated on progress via your News Feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

thanks thanks thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 14:28:41

So, so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. Aillidh was such a brave, sparkling girl who won the hearts of so many. Mine included.

Sending love and strength to you all X

SarahStratton Tue 10-Jul-12 14:30:47

I would very much like to donate some wool again. Could I donate to a MNer who can knit a flower square please?

nickelbarapasaurus Tue 10-Jul-12 14:32:01

I followed Aillidh's story.
So sorry for expat and the whole family (and friends too)

I'd love to be on the team. smile

I can't knit or crochet but will donate wool. Let me know how much per ball and where.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 14:33:15

Sarah - I am coming to you X

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 14:34:21

cross posts, I will be coming to everyone thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 14:34:39

Please PM RatherBeOnThePiste with your offers, be they crafting or donations

Many thanks. thanks

Alibabaandthe40nappies Tue 10-Jul-12 14:34:56

I would like to donate some wool please.

What a lovely idea to do a blanket for Giraffes as well smile

Now I'm going to have a little cry.

bobkate Tue 10-Jul-12 14:35:22

So pleased that you're also doing a blanket for Giraffes. I had no idea she has also lost a daughter so my thoughts are with her as well as of course the brave little girl Aillidh, Expat and the rest of the Expat family. Please count me in xx

Have pm'd.

Count me in - I'll do a square for each blanket. I've got some wool left over from what my donor sent me for the last square I did - would it be alright if I used that for one of the squares? And I might have enough left of my own for another square - if not, I might ask for another ball, if someone wanted to donate.

Hiya - count me in sad

Awful news and they deserve some comfort thanks

Count me in...I cant knit or do creative stuff but if there is anything else I can do please let me know........x

Thumbwitch Tue 10-Jul-12 14:38:13

Oh no, I could have doubled my order and sent to the same crafter, if that would have worked with the spreadsheet - just been told my order is already packed and ready to go though (for Mumof2teenboys' blanket).

Never mind. I will donate again - do I need to Pm you again, Pistey, to keep your records straight?

AllMuddledUp Tue 10-Jul-12 14:39:13

sad I lurked on many of the threads about Aillidh and was so sad to hear that she has passed away.

My heart goes out to Expat and all of Aillidh's family and friends.

I would love to knit some squares, will PM now.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 14:39:20

Signing in sad

BerryLellow Tue 10-Jul-12 14:39:33

I'd very much like to donate - will PM you Pistey

HaplessHousewife Tue 10-Jul-12 14:39:40

Have pm'd

peggyblackett Tue 10-Jul-12 14:39:57

I'd like to donate please. I'll wait for a PM from you pistey x

Pm'd you Pistey

Thank you and Knotty for co-ordinating again thanks xx

mygetupandgohasgotupandgone Tue 10-Jul-12 14:41:13

I would live to crochet or knit some squares if someone would be willing to donate the wool.

peggyblackett Tue 10-Jul-12 14:41:21

(Can't PM from phone, but will PM you later if that's easier)

ScrambledSmegs Tue 10-Jul-12 14:41:25

I would like to donate some wool please (not a great knitter) but have no paypal account. Can I donate without having one?

NoobytheWaspSlayer Tue 10-Jul-12 14:41:49

I've been waiting for this thread, and I'm in to knit two squares. I'm a total novice, but my Mum is going to teach me how. I'll buy wool to save the donor wool for better knitters.

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 14:42:42

If you could PM Pistey, it will save her having to check the whole thread. Many thanks

Please count me in .... So wish that these requests didn't come up with such frequency ...

Thoughts and prayers with all.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 14:44:06

"Not a great knitter" is no reason not to create for this project. Squares are valued for the love and effort put in, not the complicatedness of the pattern.

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 14:44:40

Thumb, let Pistey know. Extra balls to your previous crafter may overwhelm her. I have a feeling we will have many crafters offering their help.

Scrambled, PM Pistey, we have ways for those without Paypal. Thanks.

MikeLitoris Tue 10-Jul-12 14:44:49

Can you pm me please pistey.

On my phone so it will only let me reply to pms.

I would love to donate again.

Dont have paypal but could send wool or money directly to a knitter if needed.

nickelbarapasaurus Tue 10-Jul-12 14:45:45

are we PMing for everything, or just for donating?

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 14:46:20

Everything, please Nickel thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 14:46:28

Simple squares are good. Simple squares are essential

Is our mantra. The thought behind the square is the greatest value.

mejon Tue 10-Jul-12 14:47:08

Another one who lurked on the threads but couldn't find the words. I'd be honoured to knit some squares for the blankets. I'll PM you Pistey.

TheRealMBJ Tue 10-Jul-12 14:48:17

I will make a square and one on Blatherskite's behalf. Will PM presently.

MittzbethSalanderLovesBouncing Tue 10-Jul-12 14:51:27

sad signing up xx

I would like to knit (plain squares) but I would need some wool,

Thinking of Aillidh, expat, and giraffe a lot these days sad, she is an amazing little girl!

SixtyFootDoll Tue 10-Jul-12 14:53:26

I would love to donate, wish I could knit or crochet.

I'm in, of course. I love that we are doing a blankie for Giraffe too.

thanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanksthanks As always you guys are amazing with your thoughtfulness and generousity. Mumsnet is very lucky to have!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 14:55:12

Am replying to everyone, please bear with me, the response is absolutely amazing. I am blown away. thanks

Idratherbeknitting Tue 10-Jul-12 14:56:07

Absolutley signing up for these blankets. I followed Aillidh's threads with hope, and now much sadness. My heart goes out to Expat and her family, and Giraffes as well.

If we can help in any small way, show love and support, then I'm in.

AddictedtoCrunchies Tue 10-Jul-12 14:57:56

Have pm-ed

Have PM'd you pistey. I'd like to knit some squares if I can be matched with a donor. Such sad news.

I have pm'd, just marking a place on the thread.

nickelbarapasaurus Tue 10-Jul-12 14:59:24

okay. smile

fledtoscotland Tue 10-Jul-12 14:59:29

MooncupGoddess Tue 10-Jul-12 15:00:44

I'd like to donate, will pm piste now.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 15:01:19

prettybird Tue 10-Jul-12 15:02:24

Absolutely signing up for this.

Already have very pale pink wool which was got by accident for Matilda's blanket.

Pistey - if I combine the wool I got today with the left overs from the previous blankets (still have some dark green and two shades of blue) - then I could produce squares for both blankets? Would that be OK?

soremummy Tue 10-Jul-12 15:03:02

Will pm when I'm back from school. Count me in for these blankets x

I've followed Aillidh's story with sadness and my thoughts are with expat and her family as always. sad I can't contribute to these blankets unfortunately as I already have several projects on the go but I know that you will be overwhelmed with offers.

These may end up being the biggest blankets Mumsnet has ever made! smile

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

LinzerTorte Tue 10-Jul-12 15:08:14

I'm in. I have some blue wool left over from a previous blanket plus a new ball of cream (Debbie Bliss, colour 18013, which I'm assuming is the same as 013) so will try to do two squares.

Will PM Pistey now.

landofsoapandglory Tue 10-Jul-12 15:10:13

I'll knit again, for both blankets. I don't need a donor I can source my own wool.

I am going on holiday on Thursday so may need a little extension.

Have PMed you smile

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 15:11:10

Puddlejumper, 6' square is about critical mass. Better to split into two or more blankets or it becomes impossible to lift dry, let alone wet - you'd never get it on a washing line, for example!

Linzer, yes that's the "right" cream (the one that's actually cream in rl!)

Naoko Tue 10-Jul-12 15:11:20

I'm in. I've never taken part in a blanket project before, but Aillidh has been on my mind so much, I couldn't not. I'll PM Pistey now.

McKayz Tue 10-Jul-12 15:11:39

Signing in here. I am going to try and get a square or 2 done. I have some wool I bought myself to practice with.

Will PM Pistey when I get on the laptop.

soremummy Tue 10-Jul-12 15:12:34

Of if pistey wants to pm me I can reply

prettybird Tue 10-Jul-12 15:13:04

Just seen there is one being produced for Giraffes. What a lovely idea. thanks

I've just weighed the wool I currently have: with the 2 new balls that arrived today, I have 185 grammes of wool (the two new balls of cream and lovely greeny-blue/silver, most of a ball of powder pink and then ends of balls of dark green, warm purple and two blues) - that should be enough to make 7 if not 8 squares smile which could be used for the blankets as you best see fit/the colours/patterns chosen, if that's OK.

Haribojoe Tue 10-Jul-12 15:13:10

I would like to donate wool.

Jules146 Tue 10-Jul-12 15:13:34

So sad sad so many blankets needed at the moment it just do sad sad my thoughts are with the families sad xx

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 15:15:35

such a heart-warming response, I will get to everyone X

Cokeaholic Tue 10-Jul-12 15:16:04

Can't knit or crochet for toffee but have paypalled some funds via the woolly hugs website

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 15:17:14

Please if possible PM Pistey (we know it's not possible from many phones) just to save her trawling through the thread.

The generosity is truly overwhelming thanks

TomblibooTrousers Tue 10-Jul-12 15:17:55

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this. I will make some squares xx

Count me in woolly huggers! I will be ordering some wool tonight.

PrettyVacant1 Tue 10-Jul-12 15:31:25

I have PM'd you too. X

MOSagain Tue 10-Jul-12 15:32:50

put me down for a plain wobbly bottomed square for each of them. Will PM you pistey x

MrsKwazii Tue 10-Jul-12 15:35:32

Pistey and Knotty you are [stars] for coordinating these blankets. PM sent and awaiting instructions.

Pidj I hadn't thought about the weight of it! That's a good point. confused

I was just thinking, it looks like you are going to be inundated with offers for these blankets as so many of us have been so touched by Aillidh. If you have lots more offers/squares than you need for the 2 blankets could a couple of smaller ones be made and donated to the children's ward or PICU in Aillidh's name?

VerityClinch Tue 10-Jul-12 15:37:42

I'll donate for wool, packaging, postage, whatever you need. PM me and let me know how I can get funds to you?

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 15:39:49

Previous leftover squares have (with the consensus of the thread) been made into blankets and used to raise money for charity thanks

FormerlyTitledUntidy Tue 10-Jul-12 15:42:29

am so sorry for expat, my thoughts are with her and her family.

Pleiades45 Tue 10-Jul-12 15:49:19

I've PMd.

OneWaySystemBlues Tue 10-Jul-12 15:56:32

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 15:57:44

still getting to everyone X

bebejones Tue 10-Jul-12 16:01:25

I want to donate some wool, shall message Piste! I sadly am the world's worst knitter! sad But I feel compelled to help!

ScrambledSmegs Tue 10-Jul-12 16:02:25

I've bought the wool, hope it's the right colours as my laptop screen is a bit weird, it distorts everything.

I'm so very sorry that we're making all these blankets at the moment, although the love and generosity from so many MNers is truly heartwarming. thanks

ScrambledSmegs Tue 10-Jul-12 16:03:49

Oh, just an idea - is it possible to incorporate anything sparkly into the blanket? Since Aillidh loved sparkly things? Sorry if it's too difficult.

oh I'd like to donate wool, I will PM Piste.

Eskarina Tue 10-Jul-12 16:08:25

I would be honoured to be involved in this project. I have followed little Ailidh's heartbreaking story and would love to contribute knitting to the blanket.

I'll donate (as I still have not dusted off my knitting skills). blush

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 16:12:37

As far is we know it's just the cream/white shades that are tricky to photograph - one's actually banana yellow and another is very very bright white!

For those new to the blanket projects:

All squares are welcome, effort is as valued as skill.

No design or colour is right or wrong. We suggest colour schemes so that the blanket looks good when put together; designs are representative of the creator.

There are many variations of 6" and square. While we encourage accuracy, if you manage 5 7/8" you can be pretty certain someone else has done 6 1/8"

One 50g ball does 2-3 squares, depending on design. With such amazing generosity, it may be possible to arrange woolly meet ups to swap wool and designs - pm me to register interest and if there's enough, i'll start a thread to sort out geography.

Please keep checking back to the thread. Pistey is very good at posting up when wool has arrived safely, and later squares. Once they're made, there will likely be pictures to look at too posted by crafters

LadyWellian Tue 10-Jul-12 16:13:55

I'm so sorry that Ailidh's story has ended like this. Please count me in as a knitter. I could do with a ball of wool though as all my MN-approved stock is in various not very girly shades of blue.

Sorry, am at work so can't read the whole thread. Do I need to PM someone?

Gigaflops Tue 10-Jul-12 16:14:29

Have PM'd... i can do four squares... so so sad for expat!

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 16:16:37

Pm Pistey, please, LadyW

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 16:18:37

Scrambled, we can't use sparkly wool for squares as it may well wash/shrink differently. If you would like to make something like a star or similar that could be sewn onto a square, that would be fine. smile

pofacedagone Tue 10-Jul-12 16:19:01

a lovely thing to do. Words can only do so much in a situation like this, but the physical act of love in the form of the blankets really mean something.

thanks to EVERYONE

DanyTargaryen Tue 10-Jul-12 16:22:18

Can't knit very well but if anyone can tell me where to get the wool from I would be happy to donate a couple of balls of it.

ScrambledSmegs Tue 10-Jul-12 16:24:03

Sorry Knotty, I meant as decoration, ie a sparkly ribbon or sequins or something like that. I've already bought the approved wool.

When I said I wasn't a great knitter, I was being a bit kind to myself. I therefore won't be knitting any squares, sadly.

IvanaNap Tue 10-Jul-12 16:25:07

I have never knitted in my life. Oh, I think I used to bend out of shape play with my mum's needles when I was little, pretending to 'knit'. And I have finger-knitted once, possibly twice hmm and done a bit of crochet in primary school, oh and have an unfinished cross-stitch in my drawer to add to my crafting credentials.

How tricky is it to do? Does it take a while to learn / make a square? How long do you take to knit and put the wooly hugs together? Do you need to buy anything other than needles and wool? Would a first-timer like me be a bit ambitious and I would be better donating a ball or two instead?

Count me in too, have PM'd pistey.

psychomum5 Tue 10-Jul-12 16:27:09

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 16:32:28

First timers and those not too sure, we have Knitting and Crochet Support threads running in Arts and Crafts. Please come over and ask questions, i'll pop the links up in just a mo.

Am in awe of your work. I can't knit but have donated funds to Woolly Hugs x

Naoko Tue 10-Jul-12 16:36:04

Ivana, I taught myself to knit with the aid of this book and some youtube videos last year. I think I would have known enough to start a very plain square after an afternoon of concentrating on those (although making it would certainly have been quite slow going at that point and taken a fair while).

I'd say try it - if you get stuck, I'm sure someone on here will help you out!

moogdroog Tue 10-Jul-12 16:42:33

Sad to be involved but want to be involved all the same. Will have a look in my stash to see if I have anything suitable but would appreciate a donor as money's too tight to mention at the moment. I promise I will knit love into every single stitch.

qazxc Tue 10-Jul-12 16:47:10

Would love to do a square or two. count me in.

IvanaNap Tue 10-Jul-12 16:56:05

Thank you Naoko, I am imagining a 6" square to be quite small - but is it quite a lot in knitting / crocheting terms? Does it take days/weeks?

I would love to contribute to these blankets as some little gesture towards Expat and her family, and giraffes - as Aillidh's life has left a very real "something" with me. (I have been reminded again just how precious life is, how it is so easy to get caught up in day-to-day stresses and gripes and I have been striving to be a better person and mummy as a result). I'm not sure what you'd call it - a mark, an impact - maybe just a little sparkle of hers that reached me through reading and praying, hoping and feeling for them all these past few days. The least I can do is learn to knot knit, or at least try.

I think I will PM pistey and donate wool, while also buying some for myself and giving it a go - that way I have still contributed whether the squares work out or not. Thank you for the links Purple, will have a wander over there this evening. thanks

PMd you Pistey. Would be honoured to knit for expat and giraffes. There are no words but I can knit

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 17:05:34

Please make sure you PM Pistey so she can put you in her super-whizzy-efficient spreadsheet thing without having to trawl through the thread thanks

General guide for knitting squares:

1) Cast on 33 stitches. Knit rows until it measures 6". Cast off

2) Cast on 3 stitches. Work an increase at the beginning and end of each row until you reach 6". Work a decrease at the beginning and end of each row until you run out of stitches.

General guide for crocheting squares:

1) 8 rounds of granny square

2) Chain 26. Treble crochet in 2nd from hook and each stitch across. Chain 2, turn. Repeat until you have 12 rows/6". Change colour as desired

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 17:07:41

Ivana, i would estimate that a first square would take 3-4 hours. That doesn't have to be all in one go, though - you can do a few rows at a time. I often do this to prevent cramp!

chipmonkey Tue 10-Jul-12 17:08:26

Signed up and bumping!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Tue 10-Jul-12 17:24:57

Sadly, I will knit.
I can buy the wool locally.
Will PM Pistey.

Rumours Tue 10-Jul-12 17:27:05

I've recently got into knitting again, will pm in a mo. can I just check that I have to cast on 33 and knit until it measures 6'', also what size needles do I need, I think the ones I've got are too big, 10 mm.

Count me in. I'll PM Pistey.

I've sent a PM to Pistey. What a shame that so many blankets are needed all together. sad

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 17:36:30

Cast on 33 for average tension - if you're particularly loose you need fewer, tight you need more.

4mm needles/hook are recommended for this weight of wool

Pm'd as a wool provider.

HairyPotter Tue 10-Jul-12 17:39:13

I'm here. Will pm Pistey. Such sad news sad

magicOC Tue 10-Jul-12 17:41:34

Count me in for some squares, will do flowers. Can PM from phone but will do as soon as I get to laptop. Too many of these blankets being done lately sad. Haven't had the chance to for a while.

MaudLebowski Tue 10-Jul-12 17:42:22

Is non-standard yarn ok on errr....none structural bits of the square?
What I'm thinking of is a square made of approved yarn with different coloured flowers added on after, and buying new balls of yarn to get a little bit for a flower seems a bit mad.
Will do something in one colour if it's a problem, just happy to be able to help really.

VeniceQueen Tue 10-Jul-12 17:44:24

I'd love to have a go and have pm'd Pistey.

Umami Tue 10-Jul-12 17:46:36

Count me in please.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 17:52:02

Other Yarn for a few embellishments is fine, or pm me to register an interest in meeting up with other blanketeers - if i get enough, i'll coordinate it thanks

Please pm RatherBeOnThePiste to get on her superduper spreadsheet of all contributors thanks

To all you lovely crafters, just to let you know that www.deramores.com have 10% off all Debbie Bliss wool which ends at midnight tonight. They, also, have money off the Sublime wool as well, I think it was about £4.14 a ball.

They are very good, I use them lots and their delivery is super speedy.

Evening wine

The light is off in my PM box. For now.smile

An unbelievably heartwarming response, thank you so much to everyone. So many taking part in different ways, so many lovely donors, so many lovely crafters. The strength of desire to show Expat and Giraffes your love and support has left me a bit tearful I will admit. thanks

I'm off to trawl the thread to make sure no one has been left behind. Thank you X

Rumours Tue 10-Jul-12 20:49:52

I pm'd piste did you get it?

BettySuarez Tue 10-Jul-12 20:52:15

I would love to donate as can't knit sadly, could I be matched with a donor please?

Signed up to knit/crochet smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 10-Jul-12 20:58:42

Rumours have just resent it thanks

I feel the PM system creaking, they aren't always going first time, but I've just gone back through to make sure no one has been left and I've received 275 since we started this afternoon. Such a lot of love for Expat and Giraffes. X

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 21:00:21

Wow shock

Rumours Tue 10-Jul-12 21:00:44

Thanks piste I have replied, also what does see in the ends mean and don't block work? Sorry I'm new to all this, I can just do a basic knit blush want to try.

Hobs Tue 10-Jul-12 21:01:07

I would like to knit for this, but would appreciate being matched to a wool donor if possible. PM-ing Piste now.

When you say 'plain' squares, how plain do you mean? I can't do anything overly fancy - the fanciest things I can manage are rib and possibly stripes though they might be slightly wonky stripes I think I could do cable, but I've not done it before.

Gasp! shock

Rumours I also don't know what don't block work, and have only just worked out what sewing your ends means, so am probably secretly on the black list for having sent my previous 5 squares with all the threads hanging about....

Rumours Tue 10-Jul-12 21:06:39

dances that makes me feel better smile

I'd very much like to donate. Just wish I didn't have to. x

greengoose Tue 10-Jul-12 21:12:33

I wish this blanket wasn't needed. (or any of them).

I'll do some flower squares. If I can work it out that is! Will pm Pistey, again. You must be so busy, I don't know how you manage so much at once. X

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 21:14:34

Blocking means make the square damp and iron it neat. We Don't Iron hmm

Pesky Ends are the tails of wool from where you start an finish work. Thread the loose end onto a fat, blunt darning needle/bodkin and weave it between the stitches of your work to trim it. There's 100 or so squares per blanket, with at least 2 ends each so we very much appreciate everyone doing their own!

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 21:16:32

Meet up thread if anyone wants some moral or practical support. Give me a sec and i'll link the support thread too thanks

GotMyGoat Tue 10-Jul-12 21:22:11

Have just sent a message asking to donate, as I am not at all crafty.

I don't suppose if anyone would be able to knit a square with a pair of brown bunnies on? These are my rabbits - and would love for them to bring some comfort to others.

How many balls of wool do you need for a square?

Bless you all.

alwaysme Tue 10-Jul-12 21:23:55

Thank you for the PM Piste, have donated to Woollyhugs.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 21:26:30

One ball makes 2-3 squares thanks

newlark Tue 10-Jul-12 21:29:54

Have pm'd to sign up - would love to knit a square

I am rubbish at knitting so happy to donate instead. Will PM you Piste.

GotMyGoat Tue 10-Jul-12 21:32:51

purplepidjin-They are half wild, so quite light - think that brown would be wonderful - (the mouse is very cute btw!) I've never done this before - how does it work? I've got paypal so could transfer over a little money? Or do I wait for piste to give me my orders.

It's so sad that these blankets are needed, but I'm really moved by the amount of love shown here.

maxmissie Tue 10-Jul-12 21:35:18

Happy to donate but very sad at the circumstances. Have PM'd Pistey.

GotMyGoat Tue 10-Jul-12 21:39:21

Am off to bed now pidjin, will be in touch though once I understand. Thank you.

toomanyeasterbunnies Tue 10-Jul-12 21:40:49

I am relatively new to the art of crochet but I would love to make a couple of squares - in fact I've been keeping an eye on the arts and craft threads to see if one was going to be made. I think I might have some cashsoft wool so will get cracking. Aillidh's\Expat's story completely touched me so I'd dearly love to be part of this project.

PurplePidjin Tue 10-Jul-12 21:46:31

Gotmy, Pistey will pm with options. Either I'll make your squares or I'll pass the wool on to the right person to make into bunny motifs

Thread for those who'd like a little RL support, or for donors to put a few stitches in/make a square, or for people who like to eat cake...

Hi there, I'd really like to knit a square for this. Will get my own wool, and pm you, piste smile

Pancakeflipper Tue 10-Jul-12 21:54:37

If there's a gorgeous wooly donor hanging about with a ball of wool in their hands - I can attempt a couple of my perfectly wonky squares.

No probs if there's a huge influx of knitters, I can study patterns for a while!

Macarooned Tue 10-Jul-12 21:54:41

I sent a pm pistey...happy to try some plain hooky squares

mothmagnet Tue 10-Jul-12 21:56:42

giraffesCantFitInThePalace Tue 10-Jul-12 22:54:41

Oh I am so chuffed to be getting one too...that sounds wrong - you know what I mean. Thank you.

I had Aillidhs blanket against my cheek as she died. That blanket is so special. And I am telling you, I should win a prize for my reflexes, the number of times I saved it from vomit! My special teddy for my dd was on Aillidhs bed in the last few days of her life.

KnottyLocks Tue 10-Jul-12 22:57:24

Giraffes, we know exactly what you mean, don't worry. smile

We hope that this can bring you what little comfort we can offer.

Sending you the most enormous hug xx

Hiya; I have just learnt to crochet and would love to help if you still need crafters. I can do 3D flowers and plain squares, whichever is most needed.

Right, off to my PM box thanks

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger Wed 11-Jul-12 14:36:24

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 11-Jul-12 15:13:04

A creaky inbox <snort>

Am worried about the reliability of the PMs so what I am going to do is send a group PM to all the donors and all the crafters as a confirmation, please only reply if you hadn't had this info before, then I can make sure you have had all the details wine

Pleiades45 Wed 11-Jul-12 16:58:38

Pistey, receive a group email about the other blanket in progress but not about this one. Am I on your list as a crafter looking for a donor?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 11-Jul-12 17:12:00

Haven't done this one yet, just about to start smile

But yes I do have you on this list, hopefully soon you should hear X

PurplePidjin Wed 11-Jul-12 17:22:05

Not experienced enough to make something from part balls of different colours, I'm afraid, but I can knit a pretty basic one-colour square. Let me know/PM me for anything if you need to.

It is so dreadfully sad that we have so many of these threads at the moment, and I would like to do anything I can to help with all of them. I will make as many squares as you like, depending on the time frames you need to work to.

nowaynohow pm pistey, and she will sign you up to get a donor.

OhDearNigel Thu 12-Jul-12 21:03:40

I will knit a couple of blocks, how long do we have ?

OhDearNigel Thu 12-Jul-12 21:14:07

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 13-Jul-12 19:42:43

Fanjo - Your woolly wool was ordered yesterday by your luffly donor and I know what you have coming smile

its exciting its like waiting for christmas. thanks pistey

Hobs Fri 13-Jul-12 20:02:55

Is it wrong to say I'm excited to see what wool has been sent to me? I mean it in the best possible way.

Rumours Fri 13-Jul-12 20:10:09

Help! I casted 33 stitches and have knitted 30 rows and realised that it's going to end up being a 7'' square. I have unravelled it ad I'm going to start again, but how many stitches do you think i should cast now?

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 13-Jul-12 20:12:55

33 is just a guide, how many you need really depends on your tension, when I knit, I only have to do 29 to get a six inch square, maybe a little experimentation? Cast on 29 and knit 10 rows or sommat and see where you are width wise by then maybe?

Am giving out knitting advice again Knots wine

Rumours Fri 13-Jul-12 20:17:13

Thanks, will do it now

McKayz Fri 13-Jul-12 20:17:22

I cast on 31 stitches as my first square ended up 7" instead of 6".

Glaikit Fri 13-Jul-12 20:19:50

And I need 35 for my 6inches! Wes all diffrnt!!

Pistey either step away from the wine or away from the knitting advice!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 13-Jul-12 20:23:15

Hobs your wool was ordered by your lovely donor on Wednesday, so fingers crossed for tomorrow, I don't know what colours you are getting. smile

Rumours - how did you get on? No offence Kayz, but you must be very loose. Tension wise grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 13-Jul-12 20:23:55

Wes all different fer sure wine

Jules146 Fri 13-Jul-12 20:40:53

I have used up all my 'recycled' and made some crochet squares!! Of all different colours I love using the recycled wool, it's amazing how much you can get out of all those 'bits'!

Rumours Fri 13-Jul-12 20:51:42

Im working with 28 stitches and it's seems to be ok.

soremummy Fri 13-Jul-12 21:04:36

Have PM'd Pistey, but wanted to say a huge thank you to the donor who sent Debbie Bliss 18041 (greeny-grey) to Norwich. It has arrived safely and I shall start tomorrow thanks

Baskets45 Fri 13-Jul-12 23:24:19

Can anyone suggest a good online retailer that sells Artesano? I've had a look through my usual ones, in vain. I live in the sticks though might get to a shop shop tomorrow to see if I can get some of the Rowan or Debbie B.

strictlycomedancingdiva Fri 13-Jul-12 23:32:32

Just been online to make a donation, maybe it's time I re-taught myself how to knit!

Will be thinking of expat tomorrow x x

Thumbwitch Sat 14-Jul-12 00:53:53

Basket, cafe knit do - they're not as cheap as some of the others but I have found them to be mostly very good, and very good communicators (which I need, being overseas).

OxyMoron Sat 14-Jul-12 01:54:32

Delurking to say thank you, mystery donor, for the beautiful wool. I have spent tonight turning it into 2 celtic cross squares as a very tangible prayer during tonight's vigil. Thinking of all Aillidh's family, in the widest sense, and wishing them all the strength, love and peace that they will need for tomorrow and the coming days.
Pics ,hopefully, on my profile if you want to see them.

Thumbwitch Sat 14-Jul-12 02:01:01

They are beautiful, Oxy. thanks

Oxy, those look lovely.

Thinking of the family today.

catinboots Sat 14-Jul-12 09:44:19

I'm happy to donate! Can you match me with a knitter please

Birnamwood Sat 14-Jul-12 11:11:31

Right, mum has been round and given me a bit of a masterclass, I'm rusty but practicing hard, but I seem to be having issues with the tension. Any tips?

My wool also arrived yesterday from Hejhog (fantastic service from them, it arrived less than 24hrs after ordering!) it's a lovely teal colour (is this ok colour wise?) but I want to do stripes, what colour matches teal? <crap with colours emoticon> and would a lovely mner like to donate it? I bought the artesano superwash merino Dk.

Sorry, lots of questions! Fortunately I've got some time on my hands as I've buggered my back and the dr says I've got to rest lots (well, keep a bit active but don't tell dp smile) so loads of time for practicing. Ds1 wants me to make him a pink wooly jumper, pants and swimming trunks grin

Mermaidspam Sat 14-Jul-12 11:39:04

1st square done, pic on profile. Not bad for a crocheter of 8 months smile

Now looking or a pattern for the second one...

catinboots Sat 14-Jul-12 11:42:38

Mermaid - that's amazing!!

Mermaidspam Sat 14-Jul-12 11:46:38

Ah, thanks!

Can I ask if the donor of my wool (1 ball dusty rose, sent to the NE) had a cat? My kitten adores the purple bag it was sent in and is currently asleep on it now!

mothmagnet Sat 14-Jul-12 11:47:40

My wool arrived yesterday, a lovely dusky pink. Thanks to my wonderful donor thanks

My heart goes out to expat and her family today, I can't begin to know how she is feeling today.

mothmagnet Sat 14-Jul-12 11:51:26

Mermaidspam, I think we have the same donor, mine is in a purple bag too. I'm going to try it on the cats now.

CadleCrap Sat 14-Jul-12 13:27:03

I am overseas and can't really knit but is there a fund I can donate to (paypal type thing) to help? Every time I see the call for a new blanket I shed a tear and hug my children a little to hard.

Is it too late to sign up to knit a plain square or two? Have only recently started knitting again after a couple of decades' break so getting quicker but sticking to the basics for now.

Loving the squares some of you have done already smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 14-Jul-12 13:47:35

Thank you CadleCrap and Hobbit - you both have mail thanks

KnottyLocks Sat 14-Jul-12 13:49:22

Thank you to my donor, the wool has arrived a beautiful blue and heather purple. Thank you so much, Im going to spend all evening making our square for the blanket.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 14-Jul-12 17:35:48

I need help.

WHich of these shall I buy www.deramores.com/debbie-bliss-cashmerino-dk

And am I OK to knit some sparkly beads into it, as she loved sparkle?

twofingerstoGideon Sat 14-Jul-12 18:30:41

Thanks BettySuarez for the wool!

Somersaults Sat 14-Jul-12 19:07:10

Bought my wool today, a lovely purple. They have a limited range of colours in the Sublime range there. I got the exact type of Sublime mentioned in the details but the Baby Sublime has some beautiful colours in it and feels (to my untrained fingers!) the same as the Extra Fine that is asked for. If we could use that as well I'm going to go back and get another couple of colours in that range. Do please let me know smile

I'm ready to start knitting but I've got to go out tonight so it'll be tomorrow now.

KnottyLocks Sat 14-Jul-12 21:01:36

Hello Norma smile

Any colour you like as long as it fits in with the colour range in the OP.

We need to keep the beads to a minimum really. There are a couple of knitters working on beaded heart squares based on. Aillidh's magic blanket. I also have plans to add a touch of sparkle as the blanket is hooked together.
Trouble is, these will be very big blankets which will already weigh quite a bit, without the beads. Also being very mindful that Expat's will be in a home with 2 young children.

Trying to look at the practicalities whilst trying to make the blankets as personal as possible smile

KnottyLocks Sat 14-Jul-12 21:05:00

Somer, if you could stick to the one you have , that would be great. We know it washes the same way as our other wools. The baby range often feels different once it's knitted up. Also we've not trailed it so can't guarantee it would hold the same way after a wash.

Many thanks. smile

PurplePidjin Sat 14-Jul-12 21:30:31

Birnam I reckon a lighter shade of teal, or see if there's a meet up nearby so you can compare smile

Mermaud, that's gorgeous!!

Thinking of Aillidh thanks

Knotty I had to smile at your comment about these being very big blankets. Exactly how many squares are you anticipating?

Somersaults Sun 15-Jul-12 00:17:32

That's fine, like I said, I bought the exact one recommended. I just thought I'd ask because the colours are so nice in the baby Sublime. If I knit anything for DD in the baby Sublime I could send it along separately from the other squares as a test/trial square if that helps. Then we'll know for future. No worries if not, I just know I'll be knitting with it because I've seen a beautiful pink that I think will really suit DD!

PurplePidjin Sun 15-Jul-12 01:16:17

Exit, iirc 6' square is about as big as they can go before getting too heavy to be practical (144 squares)

Pancakeflipper Sun 15-Jul-12 08:39:12

As I nearly complete my 3rd square <total stealth boast as I am usually dragging along at the back> - could you remind me what we do with the ends of the wool?

Do we sew them in the edge of the square or leave them dangling?
Or something else?

KnottyLocks Sun 15-Jul-12 08:41:08

Pancake, if you could sew the pesky ends in, we would be most grateful smile

KnottyLocks Sun 15-Jul-12 08:41:58

And get you, with your third square ! grin well done, my lovely smile

Pancakeflipper Sun 15-Jul-12 09:10:45

Ta Knotty. Will sew them in.

Get me indeed. grin

Wolfcub Sun 15-Jul-12 09:26:56

Managed to teach myself to make a granny square yesterday and have finished my first one, bar sewing the ends in (need to teach self how to do that too). Hopefully it's ok.

Tried something new last night with my donor wool and Im pretty pleased with the results. The square picture is in my profile.

PurplePidjin Sun 15-Jul-12 11:40:43

Please could you publicise your profile, Fanjo thanks

have done Pidj

Lovely, fanjo. I don't say that very often grin

thanks alot moaningminge

PurplePidjin Sun 15-Jul-12 11:55:03

Jules146 Sun 15-Jul-12 13:22:43

Very nice Fanjo, where was the pattern from?!

LadyWellian Sun 15-Jul-12 13:26:40

My donor wool arrived yesterday (it was my birthday so I was hoping it might be a present sad) - thank you to AM in Greater Manchester and I liked the addressing to 'The Mumsnetter of the House'. It's a lovely raspberry pink Cashmerino that will look gorgeous with some of the blues I have left over from my DSis's Xmas present.

So what to do? Leaves, hearts or stripes? I have a pattern that does stripes at a right angle, which is quite fun.

Pidj, I dreamt about you last night. confused
