Blanket for MrsY and her family. Donors, crocheters and knitters, can you help us?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 13:52:29

We have heard the desperately sad news that MrsY has lost her precious baby son Benedict and have offered to make a blanket for her and her family. She is very touched by everyone's kindness, and would love to receive one. Here is the original thread

So once again we are calling on the Blanketeers for help - whether it be donating, knitting or crocheting. Will you join us?

PM me and let me know how you can help, if you need matching up and I will be able to help you

For pictures from previous blankets, see here www.woollyhugs.com

As in the past, the wool we are using is:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)
* or Rowan cashsoft DK

They are very similar and can be combined
* 4mm knitting needles or hooks
* Cast on 33 stitches
* 6" squares

The colours for this project
Blues, warm purples, greens, silver and cream

So sad that another blanket is needed sad Sending love to MrsY and her family.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 13:55:38

Many, many thanks for all your support thanks

You will see very sadly there is another call for a blanket starting today see the thread here

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 14:00:43

Please feel free to ask any questions you have about the project on this thread and we will try to answer them. thanks

MinnieBar Tue 08-May-12 14:13:34

Have PMd you.

thanks

MOSagain Tue 08-May-12 14:19:33

I will donate 2 balls of wool. Will PM you Pistey. Any suggestions as to where to buy the wool?

I am also going to learn to knit, something I should have done years ago when my lovely mother was still alive to teach me. Not sure if I'll be up to speed/scratch in time for this blanket but would love to be so I could contribute for my lovely friend MrsY. So very sad that you are in a position to receive a blanket but so very glad you are going to get one in memory of your darling Benedict who will never be forgotten. xxx

GetOnYourDancingShoes Tue 08-May-12 15:25:09

Put me down to knit some squares.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 15:31:15

Could I just ask you lovely people to PM Pistey as well as post on the thread, to let us know how you would like to help

Helps us keep track, especially with two projects running simultaneously.

Many thanks.

I will knit squares for both, but would appreciate it of someone could donate a ball of wool. I usually do squares with a flower appliqued on.

roguepixie Tue 08-May-12 15:37:44

Pistey - have pm'd you.

Made the suggestion of a blanket for greengoose (hadn't seen your other thread).

Will do squares for both. So, so sad that two more are needed.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 15:39:48

Cheers, SDTG. Got your PM and will get back to you when we can. The Inboxes are very busy at the moment.

And we're getting stuff coming at us from MNWoollyHugs on Facebook too.

People are just lovely.

Thanks Knotty.

hoops997 Tue 08-May-12 15:42:29

Have pm'ed you, happily donate wool, I'll need matching up to a knitter

It's sad we need another blanket sad my thoughts are with MrsY and her family

MadameMessy Tue 08-May-12 15:57:25

I've PMed Pistey. Heartbreaking stuff, my thoughts are with the famillies.

MrsPear Tue 08-May-12 16:01:58

Hi such sad news. I am also quite happy to donate wool - have sent message

Have PM'd about both blankets. So sad that 2 are needed at the same time.

I'm new to this but not a bad knitter although I am glad someone else does the joining together!

duchesse Tue 08-May-12 16:19:17

As the mother of a now 18yo Benedict, please sign me up to knit squares. As always, money is very tight at the moment so I would appreciate a donor.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 16:35:58

Still working my way through PMs, pls bear with me, we are having a truly amazing response X

Oh such sad news. sad
I can offer my craft skills for both blankets, piste could you match me to a donor please.

Hey
Signing in as a knitter for this project - so sad. I'm due in two weeks time so this is very poignant for me. I have some wool from previous projects but if there is any available that would be lovely.
Hugs and Kisses
KNT

MOSagain Tue 08-May-12 16:47:31

Pistey have some thanks and wine

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 18:05:42

For MrsY I have some suggestions of motifs and patterns that are significant to them, if you can incorporate them, then that would be lovely. But please don't worry if not, there's no way I could do anything like this, my squares are always very simple. You need simple and complex to make a blanket work well!

PurplePidjin Tue 08-May-12 18:54:17

Signing in sad

LynnCSchreiber Tue 08-May-12 19:01:10

Pistey
We talked about this before, I think, but I would be keen to write an article about the Wooly Hugs for Jump! Mag - particularly if there is a MNetter and daughter who are knitting together.

If anyone would be willing to speak to me, and let me interview their DD (or DS for that matter), would they PM me.

There are not enough thanks in the world to express my admiration to what you and the other organisers are doing.

Pastabee Tue 08-May-12 19:02:40

I have pm'd you.

100years Tue 08-May-12 19:06:35

I'll send a PM in a bit. On the MN app so it's a bit tricky off here. But I'll do some squares but would appreciate a donor this time.

PMd you postey. sad

Pistey Sorry.

Umami Tue 08-May-12 19:15:08

Happy to crochet, and have PMd you Pistey.

hoops997 Tue 08-May-12 19:17:58

I've emailed the eBay shop where I have bought my wool asking whether she would like to donate some, I've linked her the website, hopefully she'll donate a few balls smile

MadameMessy Tue 08-May-12 19:32:30

Mme Lindor I was going to teach dd to knit, but I think the wool will be too lovely for practicing on. Great idea for Jump! though, am sure someone will be along though.
Although, on FB we were talking about a mini hug, just one square that could be portable. Like if someone needed a woollyhug while out and about (Think it was for Wubbly's little boy for school? Totally open to correction here) an that wouldn't have to be the Debbie Bliss or the Cashsoft would it Pistey? Dd would like to learn and I think she would love a project as it were. Just throwing out ideas...

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 19:40:53

Messy, we have a developing plan involving the mini-hugs. smile

Can't say any more until we've worked it all through though.

In the meantime, I'll be making a mini-hug for Lawrie to go in with the Wubbly blanket.

have pm'd pistey. and thanks for organising us all.

MadameMessy Tue 08-May-12 19:45:49

Yes I knew there was some lovely plan smile Trust you to have something splendiferous up your sleeve smile

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate Tue 08-May-12 19:54:09

Will be knitting some squares for Benedict Piste, do you need me to PM you now or when I've finished them. I think I have blue and purple in my stash x

Pistey count me for this blanket too, I ordered three balls of wool from cucumber patch so should be able to produce a good number of squares.

MoaningMinnieRisesAgain Tue 08-May-12 20:03:00

Have PM'd you, am happy to knit again.

Ladyface Tue 08-May-12 20:05:21

Have pm'd you, Pistey.

DonkeyTeapot Tue 08-May-12 20:07:15

I would like to donate squares, I've PM-ed Pistey.

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate Tue 08-May-12 20:17:02

I can knit squares with a heart on as someone kindly gave me the pattern last time - does anyone have the pattern/s for squares with different letters on too?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 20:24:09

The brilliant response continues, heartfelt thanks to everyone.

thanks

tribpot Tue 08-May-12 20:28:54

Pirate - I'm hoping to start a thread soon to collect up some of the patterns we've done over previous blankets; we had an entire thread dedicated to a particular heart square that caused a few teething problems!

If you're not already a member of Ravelry it's well worth registering (it's free) as there are gazillions of patterns there, including charts for all the letters.

TimeForCake Tue 08-May-12 20:29:50

sad sad

I shall be PMing you shortly Pistey about crocheting a square.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 20:33:26

Trib, if you are doing a support thread again, could you source a simple bird pattern square if possible? We're looking for birds for Greengoose's blanket/ thanks. x

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate Tue 08-May-12 20:39:28

I have found this but I can't find anywhere that says what size the squares will come out - any ideas?

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 20:46:38

Pirate, that looks about right if you consider the number of stitches cast on. we need a knitting expert to have a check through re length though.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 20:47:37

Can I help?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 20:48:24

Lots of lovely PMs - please do bear with me thanks

lisad123 Tue 08-May-12 20:48:27

I can't do knitting, but can PayPal someone money for wool, is that possible?

100years Tue 08-May-12 20:48:35

I've PMd now. I'll crochet some squares but I'd like a donor please this time. Just read Mrs Y's thread and it's so very sad, I hope she gets some small comfort from everyone's thoughts and wishes.

I'd like to know of the mini hugs too, when the idea is finalised.

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate Tue 08-May-12 20:52:27

It's just annoying that I can find dimensions on there - don't think it will take me long to do but if Piste can tell me if it will be 6" to start with it will save me some time!

tribpot Tue 08-May-12 20:54:09

Knotty - yip, Pistey has given me my instructions.

Pirate - 35 stitches sounds about right although you'll need to knit a test bit (or a plain square) to see how your gauge is. 56 rows sounds a bit much to me, though. It might need scaling down a bit. Will link to a support thread in a mo.

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate Tue 08-May-12 20:58:27

Yikes, I'm not good at changing patterns blush.

I knitted my last squares with 4.5mm needles as my knitting is quite tight.

tribpot Tue 08-May-12 21:04:44

That's okay, Pirate. Why not have a bash at it? I will chart it at the weekend when I have a chance but you should have a feel within 10 or so rows for how big it's going to end up.

I have to knit mine on 3.25mm, such is the utter slackness of my knitting smile I don't think we should ever knit a scarf with you starting at one end and me at the other!

grin trib, I'll remember that - it could be an interesting project!

KisMittzAteALLThePies Tue 08-May-12 21:17:57

Is there call for plain knitters and crocheters? I am not great at fancy and it would be helpful just at the moment if could be linked to someone who can donate wool as things are very tough at home blush

But I would be honoured to be apart of a blanket, but am deeply saddened at the need for them sad

tribpot Tue 08-May-12 21:18:59

KisMittz - the mantra of MN blankets is always that plain squares are good, plain squares are essential.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:20:07

Simple squares are good. Simple squares are essential smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 21:20:22

There is always a call for knitters of simple squares! I am a knitter of simple things grin We are needed!!

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:22:12

KisMittz, if you have a look at some of the previous blankets on our site www.woollyhugs.com, you'll see how even the most simple of squares have an important part to play.

With these blankets, it is always about the thoughts and efforts involved first.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:23:01

Pistey is indeed a great simple expert smile

KisMittzAteALLThePies Tue 08-May-12 21:24:15

smile I do love doing Moss Stitch which is quite pretty, but will PM in the morning.

PurplePidjin Tue 08-May-12 21:25:10

Plain squares are the best. The stars wouldn't shine half as brightly without a night sky backdrop.

For those blush about asking for wool to be donated, please don't. There are many people who couldn't be a part of these projects if it weren't for offers of time and skill from crafters!

tribpot Tue 08-May-12 21:26:17

Support thread for help and ideas.

I think Knotty has just accused Pistey of being a simpleton shock wink

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:26:46

I love Moss stitch. Made up in this wool, it looks and feels so snuggly.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 22:26:47

Many, many thanks to everyone for all the offers of help, whatever they are, they are much appreciated. Very touching indeed, the response has been overwhelming.

morning all. Hope my wool arrives with my knitter today. The PO said it should be there Saturday but we know they always lie sad

JustGettingByMum Mon 14-May-12 09:40:41

Bugger!
The company I ordered wool from for my lovely knitter contacted me on Friday to say there would be a delay,so on saturday I trekked to the big city and bought some. I have posted it off this morning

Got home and logged on, checked my emails and the wool I originally ordered has also been posted direct to my knitter this morning as well

If your name starts with K and you live in the east of the uk then you may get 4 balls of wool tomorrow blush

MadameMessy Mon 14-May-12 09:55:44

My wool is here! 3 lovely balls, in green, pink and a lovely neutal beigey brown. Thanks so much to my lovely donor, I shall (hopefully) knit up something lovely for you and our Greengoose and MrsY. thanks

KnottyLocks Mon 14-May-12 10:25:10

Large supplies of chocolate and treats have just been posted off in an attempt to cheer him up grin

MOSagain Mon 14-May-12 12:14:25

Hi JGB, he is getting on well. Thank god exams out the way, he had them last Monday to Thursday but all done now until next year. He has decided to stay at Uni for a few more weeks (he wants to get his moneys worth for the board and lodgings he has paid) then home for a long summer. Good luck to your DS for his exams. <sorry for hijack> blush

I would really like to knit a square for each blanket but I dont know how to message Piste. Can anybody explain please?

MoaningMinnieRisesAgain Mon 14-May-12 16:13:30

Thing where it says Message Poster on the blue line across from Pisteys name, click on that to send her a message.

Thing3 Mon 14-May-12 16:24:29

Thank you. I am using the mobile site on my phone and the message link isn't there. I have sent a message through my inbox.

My thoughts are with both families at this very sad time.

KnottyLocks Mon 14-May-12 16:27:00

Thing, there should be an arrow on the right by someone's posts. If you touch that it gives you the option of reporting the post or sending a private message.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 16:59:29

Thing has found me grin

There should be 4 balls of wool arriving today or tomorrow for someone. Hoping it turns up ok, it was despatched yesterday.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 17:34:10

Lovely Cheese, thank you. thanks Hopefully we will hear the wool has arrived sooooooon X

NessaRose Mon 14-May-12 17:34:35

MOS you can do this. I have pm'ed you.

MOS I'm a novice knitter too. I taught myself garter stitch in November using Knitting for Dummies (never was a book's title more appropriate!) and YouTube. Then DS was born and I've barely done anything since. We'll muddle through, don't worry!

MOSagain Mon 14-May-12 18:06:19

Thanks Nessa, have replied grin
I think I'm just nervous about the casting on and getting the first row done. I vaguely remember my mum trying to teach me and seem to think I can do the plain stitch/knit and that pearl was doing it back to front if that makes sense?

I'm a relatively new knitter too! Can do garter & moss stitch, have done ribs as well but nothing more complicated than that. Pearl is back to front, yes smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:27:40

I can do garter stitch <beams> That is all.

Purl is weird, and upside down and back to front and inside out and wrong!

Pistey I have the same problem with purl! I kind of know how to do it in theory but just can't make my hands do it. confused

What's moss stitch?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:32:38

When I tried, I had to stand up too - no idea why!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:33:24

Now moss stitch is also beyond me, I think it is a knit one purl one sort thing <technical>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:34:25

Oh that's pretty!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:44:54

I actually didn't make that blush

I think perhaps this time around I had better stick to what I know though. It's going to.be tricky enough knitting with a baby clamped to my bosom (DS is high needs anyway but is both poorly and teething this week). I'll have to make sure he's not wearing anything woolly or I might accidentally knit him into the patches and you really will get a surprise in the post! grin

Shhh, don't admit that!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 18:51:25

grin

I wonder how Cakey is getting on? She's awful quiet......

TimeForCake Mon 14-May-12 19:46:40

Oh I'm here Pistey! <waves> Keeping up with the threads don't worry - been meaning to post all day. Some of the blanketeers are so amazingly quick with their squares! It normally takes me about 3 weeks to crochet one square so I shall have to speed up this time. However, making a start would be good... blush I did buy the jiffy envelope today though, in readiness for parceling up!
Glad to see there are other blanketeers with L plates too!

Standing up knitting Pistey?! Brilliant! grin
Are you knitting or crocheting yours this time?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 20:19:23

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 14-May-12 20:21:02

Cakey!

Crocheting two, possibly knitting one. Time will tell grin
And I genuinely had to stand up when trying to purl. It wasn't good. <arf>
But good you have your jiffy bag, tis a start. grin

hoops997 Mon 14-May-12 20:23:56

I'm an idiot and can't figure out which number DB is "cream" - is it 02 or 43 on cucumber patch?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 15-May-12 05:42:32

Morning brew

On my phone Lewis but I'll go and fire up the computer and have a look. I may need to have more caffeine first smile

KnottyLocks Tue 15-May-12 09:13:17

Hi all smile

Pistey apologies for not getting back to people but MN wasn't back online before she left for work.

Lewis, the 43 isn't a cream as such. The cream I have is 013. I think the 02 may be white. I'll have a check in a minute for you.

KnottyLocks Tue 15-May-12 09:27:19

Lewis, I'm back grin

02 is white, 43 is beige. 013 is cream but not on Cuc's stock list. However, Fingers and Thumbs have it here

Or from the seller who donated some wool to us here on Ebay

KnottyLocks Tue 15-May-12 09:45:14

Alternative ways of contacting us if MN keeps going offline and you need us

We're on Facebook and Twitter : MNWoollyHugs

We have an email address, which you may want to make a note of: admin @ woollyhugs dot com

lemonlymon Tue 15-May-12 10:33:01

We've ordered wool from Fingers and Thumbs but have been contacted to say it's not actually in stock - so maybe try checking with them if they have it in stock first?

Marking my place.

My mum & dad arrived this morning for a visit so (inspired by all of you) I am thinking I just might get over my all-thumbsiness and get DMum to teach me (again!!) how to crochet.

Then I can actually contribute to the blankets and not just fire off wool through the post.

<wonders if i will actually stick with it this time>

alibubbles Tue 15-May-12 13:20:25

Lovely silvery blue wool arrived from a kind donor and some from my mother too! Thank you

My wool's here! grin Unfortunately the nice soft blue I ordered turns out to actually be a kind of mid grey - is that any good? I do have a ball of green as well.

KnottyLocks Tue 15-May-12 13:55:13

HTD, great idea smile

Mid grey sounds ok, Joyful.

MrsY Tue 15-May-12 23:20:42

I posted this on the wrong thread, sorry. But I also forgot a bit, so I thought I'd post here, too.

I just wanted to drop by and thank you all for your kind thoughts and this amazing, amazing thing you are doing. I'm really humbled that you give up your time and money to help someone that you've never met. I knit and I never knew about this group blush.

Thank you all for your kind words on Benedict's thread, as well. The more people who know about Benedict, the more I feel he is validated as a person. It means a lot to us.

My mum has ordered some wool for her and some friends to knit/crochet (although it's taking forever to get here), so if it's ok, I wil forward them on to the right person once they are done to be included in the blanket?

KnottyLocks Tue 15-May-12 23:33:16

MrsY, I spotted you on the other thread first and replied before I found you here too smile

Lovely idea about including your mum's squares. We'll get the address details to you. x

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 15-May-12 23:39:27

Hello MrsY, lovely to see you, your message really means a lot to me, I know it will to the others too. . Benedict lives on in our hearts and minds, I 'm so glad we are making this Woolly Hug for you, I hope you will feel the love with which it is being made x

Lovely to have your mum contribute, when she's ready just drop me a PM and I'll give you the address for posting.

Morning smile

Work for me too. I'll pop in when I can.

Thing3 Wed 16-May-12 08:23:10

Can I just ask what we have to do with the ends of the wool. Do we need to sew them into the square or leave them for joinig together? Also my edges, to me, look quite messy. Does this matter?

TIA

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 16-May-12 08:29:07

Yes please, sew in the ends!
And the edges seem to be magically covered up by the process of crocheting the squares together. thanks

Thing3 Wed 16-May-12 08:47:14

Thank you. My wool hasn't arrived yet so I'm starting to get itchy fingers! I'm not sure what colour I have ordered but hopefully it will be suitable.

nickelbabe Wed 16-May-12 11:41:36

Can I please join in this blanket too?

Beautiful squares arriving safely today thanks

[star] Pleiades Gorgeoise pink and blue knitting and crochet thanks

[star] KnitterNotTwitter Beautiful knitted squares, so snuggly thanks

Posting on both threads as usual.... Thank you thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 18-May-12 16:53:23

Knitter - one of your squares, the brighter pink one, feels extra snuggly, like it is almost double, I've never seen one like it, what is that stitch? Tis glorious.

Pleiades - I'm admiring your grannies, they are beautiful. Do you do a chain between the edges? Two chains in the middle of the corner, yes, but do you do other chains between too?

Pleiades45 Fri 18-May-12 17:31:40

Pistey, er confused I don't know. They are my first attempts at going round in circles/squares. I'm going to have a go at doing with more than one colour next and crocheting in the ends as suggested by pidjin.

I'll try to explain.. when I got to the end of a round, I did a slip stitch into the first set of stitches, then I did a slip stitch in between those trebles and into the space at the corner so that I could start the next round.

I'm now reaching for the wine technical questions on crochet.... whatever next???

PurplePidjin Fri 18-May-12 18:17:15

wine

Pleiades, after you've done the three stitches called Trebles that make a shell/cluster What Do You Do?

A) yarn over and pull it through the hook, ignoring the square you're making

B) make three more trebles in the next gap.

wine

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 18-May-12 18:43:04

Pleiades - if those were your first attempts then I am really impressed!! So neat and even envy

And what Pidj said. A) or B) ???!!

PurplePidjin Fri 18-May-12 18:58:36

PS I apologise if that came across as patronising blush

Pleiades45 Fri 18-May-12 19:15:29

Patronising not at all.

I just followed the instructions which were 3ch(1tr) 2 tr ch3 3tr into same space, 1ch 3tr in the 1ch between clusters on previous row. So just 1ch between clusters except for the corners where there are 3ch. And because I used the one colour I slip stitched into 3rd chain of 1tr and then slipped stitch between the tr in the cluster to get to the corner.

Does that make sense? Sorry, I'm really just getting used to the terminology in crochet and DH bought me a beautiful book of crochet all with American terminology to confuse me even more!

thanks Pistey, I was actually amazed they turned out square!

KisMittzAteALLThePies Fri 18-May-12 19:30:39

<puts hand up tentatively>

Ermm... is there an average as to how many squares people send?
I have done 4....

I've done one very boring plain knit and am trying to teach myself purl so the next one isn't so boring plain. I'm such a slow knitter though, does it get easier the longer you've done it?

PurplePidjin Fri 18-May-12 19:52:31

Kis, if you send one we will be thrilled. If you send four, we will be thrilled. Most people stop when the wool runs out...

Joyful, we need lots of plain ones, please keep going!!

KisMittzAteALLThePies Fri 18-May-12 20:15:16

Yes it does get easier joyful and I mostly do Plain and Purl and they serve me very well for some lovely projects smile

Thanks Purple smile.

I am finishing a few of these, for a project of my own smile

PurplePidjin Fri 18-May-12 21:46:12

And KisMittz - those Bags of Love are absolutely stunning.

PurplePidjin Sat 19-May-12 10:23:03

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 19-May-12 19:18:31

Evening all wine

I [heart] BIWI, I really do, and when I look at my comment about donkeys arriving with peanut and meece makers, and then talk of them fitting through letterboxes, it is possibly not surprising she gets a bit confused from time to time grin

And a donkey has arrived, look after him Droitwich, I look forward to seeing your Mouse for MrsY. smile

More beautiful squares arrived today, I am in awe of how clever people are

thanks ItsJustAFleshWound : Lovely snuggly ribbing and purl, gorgeous.[star]

thanks Lattelady: You may have seen her cute owl and diagonal stripes on her blog, they are gorgeoise.[star]

thanks MoaningMinnieRisesAgain : Such beautiful pink and purple knits, so clever.[star]

Glad they arrived !

Pic of mouse on profile! Pattern shows up better in rl but you get the idea, it is one of the Ravelry patterns trib posted.
Just need to weave all of my ends in then they will be in the post

Waaaaa! I've lost my mojo! confused
I've spent all week trying to start my squares and it was all going wrong. I have frogged too many times.

I have gone for basic granny squares now. And repeating the plain is good mantra (can't actually remember). Hoping they will help show off the more eye catching ones. smile

Plain is good, Plain is essential...

That's what I was trying to remember! grin

Stands me in good stead grin

KnottyLocks Sat 19-May-12 21:21:59

Thing3 Sat 19-May-12 22:39:14

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 20-May-12 21:32:48

Droitwich - you are some super speedy meecemaker! I can't wait to see it in the wool smile thanks

Whenisitmysleepytime - we definitely heart a simple square, Knots is right. Stands me in good stead too Babs

Thing3 - did you manage to save the square? <nervously crosses fingers>

Posted this bit on the other thread....Replying to PMs, well trying to, am not sure it is behaving this evening....

Osmiornica - did it go through I wonder? I don't think yours did hmm You probably got it 10 times, or not at all! In case it didn't, I was saying thank you and both parcels you forwarded have arrived safely, many thanks for doing that for us thanks

Pidj too - I think yours was one that didn't go through either, your woolly wool will hopefully arrive with you on Tuesday.

"I'm knitting squares for some special mummies..."
"Special mummies, oh ok.... I do it too..." picks up a ruler and remnant of wool!
It was so sweet! I am pleased to know he approves too! One more square to go before posting...

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 21-May-12 20:27:03

Awww Jules... that is so sweet smile

Jules that's so cute!
Ds likes to play with my scraps but has been known to name squares and play one of his odd games with them. Apparently Peter rabbit and floppy were stuck but mopsy rescued them. hmm this was done with a granny square and some scraps of wool.

I have finished a square - my mojo is returning! grin
It's just a granny square with a tr border but it looks v square and is exactly 6 inches! <preens>

I can finally start crocheting today!

I have somewhere got about 5 3.4mm hooks, but after turning the shop and the house upside down this weekend, all I could find were 2mm and 5mm hooks!
I decided I would use the 5mm one (thinking it was a 4.5mm - which apparently has also disappeared confused), but I finally found a 3.5mm this morning.
the knitting shop won't be happy, though! wink

So, I've started.

mummylin Thu 24-May-12 23:01:28

Just thought i would pop in here to speak to the knitters. My mum recently died and i have in my possesion a knitting machine > Ihave no idea how it works ,and have no need for it anyway. If there is anyone local to me they can have it.There are some patterns or something in a bag to go with it. Has to be local as its far too heavy and big to post.Free to a good home or craft group.

KnottyLocks Thu 24-May-12 23:24:09

hello, Mummylin. Thanks for thinking of us.

So sorry to hear about you dear mum. x

I remember your thread at the time and asking how big the machine was to see if I could smuggle it into the house without Dh noticing smile

If you're happy to let me have a little think, I'll get back to you as soon as I've thunk smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-May-12 06:17:13

Hello Mummylin. so sorry about your mum, and thank you for thinking about us, that is very kind, hopefully soon it will be with a new owner, and being busy again.

Yes trib, it is a woolly treasure box. It came in a van, and I just assumed it would be for DH, because boxes on vans always are, but it was for all of us - to the Blanket Projects. It was so exciting! Thank you to MrsY for contacting them thanks

Time for another brew An early start here. Off to PMs.

SoupDragon Fri 25-May-12 10:53:44

What is the deadline for squares?

I have to make a baby blanket by Thursday so have put the squares to one side (I'm in the middle if my 7th one I think).

MOSagain Fri 25-May-12 12:05:35

Think its last posting by 2nd June.
7 squares! shock If I'm lucky, I'll have finished one <knits faster>

SoupDragon Fri 25-May-12 12:23:28

Thanks smile I try to get the squares done as quickly as possible otherwise I procrastinate and miss the deadline. I did get my yarn right at the start though so I've had it a good while.

MOSagain Fri 25-May-12 12:30:55

I'm trying to get my one square done as quickly as possible. I only learnt to knit on Wednesday and I'm rather slow blush Just realised I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do when I've got to 6" confused

<wonders if knotty or pistey would mind if I sent the square with ball of wool still attached!> wink

bind off video Really simple to follow. Don't panic grin

KnottyLocks Fri 25-May-12 12:47:55

MOS, have a look at You Tube for casting off tutorials. Pistey had to do the same when she did her first square; she did the same as you, got to 6" and realised she didn't know how to cast off.It is actually pretty simple and there are some easy to follow tutorials where the ladies speak very very very slooooowwwwwwly. smile

But if all else fails, send the square attached to the ball grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-May-12 13:28:47

I did exactly the same as you MOS grin It didn't occur to me to try it any earlier....

try this one

She is quite good, Catherine Hirst, she is the one I was recommended for crochet tutorials. I did find one lady who demonstrated so s-----l-----o-----w-----l-----y that I thought at one point she had gone to sleep. I will have a search for her if this doesn't help.

Just do be very very careful that when you pull the stitches off over the one on the needle, the one on the needle doesn't skid off too, because that happened to me and I had to send it with a safety pin holding it blush

I am more than happy though if you want to send it on the needle, I really would understand having been in your shoes!

Soupy - NEXT SATURDAY, TIS NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!

tribpot Fri 25-May-12 13:42:39

As well as the good vids, here's the Dummies' guide with good pictures!

SoupDragon Fri 25-May-12 14:13:45

The squares should be posted in time. grin Or at least by the Monday... Provided I finish my baby blanket (for which I've given myself the personal deadline of Tuesday, even though the teacher doesn't leave til Friday)

Given the huge box of wool from DB, shall I hang onto my extra ball of cream for the next time?

TimeForCake Fri 25-May-12 14:29:36

She's a lucky teacher Soupy!

About to do a bit of crochet if I can keep Ds occupied. I don't quite know where the first two weeks of the project have disappeared to! predictable
Mixture of procrastination and real life taking over I guess. Must get my squares finished!

Great news about DB donation! How lovely.

MOSagain Fri 25-May-12 14:32:01

You lot clearly think I'm daft! Clearly you know me well grin
Luckily I've got a spare set of needles and old wool so (assuming I can learn to cast on as the lovely MrsY cast on for me) I will do a few rows and practice casting off on that. Would be a shame to muck it up now, its going soooooo well.

What was lovely for me was that MrsY taught me to knit on the anniversary of my mum's death. Mum had been trying to teach me for years and I had visions of her looking down and saying 'finally'! I have bought DD aged 5 a learn to knit your own woolly scarf set from ELC and she is really keen to learn. It is lovely to carry on what my mum used to do. She loved to knit and I still have happy memories/nightmares about the year she learned fairisle (sp?) and we all got matching jumpers for christmas grin

KnottyLocks Fri 25-May-12 14:40:42

Ahhh, lovely memories, MOS smile

Soupy, hang on to the cream, my lovely smile

SoupDragon Fri 25-May-12 15:37:38

My grandmother tried to teach me to knit when I was little. i was a huge disappointment to her. I often think that all these years later she can look down (or up grin) from her spot and think at last now I've learnt to crochet (which she could also do).

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 25-May-12 18:50:45

MOS - your vision of your mum saying finally made me smile. I have a vision of my mum saying exactly the same thing. smile

tribpot Mon 28-May-12 07:59:32

There is a pic of Princess Mouse on my profile. She will be acquiring a wardrobe over the next few days smile

Pidj she's gorgeous!

I was just putting my 2 plain squares together for posting and noticed that one is bigger than the other. blush There's less than half an inch difference but I've obviously knitted one tighter than the other. Is that a common novice error? Hopefully one of them is the right size! confused

PurplePidjin Mon 28-May-12 22:24:39

They all stretch to accommodate once they're fixed in place, half an inch doesn't notice too much so don't worry! thanks

Jules146 Mon 28-May-12 22:33:34

Pistey, I have just returned from the post office. My very sad offering should be with you tomorrow grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 29-May-12 16:18:19

Oi MOS!

You mean your beautifully, gorgeoise, snuggly, perfect blue square?

I'll let you know when it arrives safely..

<watches letterbox, excitedly>

MOSagain Tue 29-May-12 16:45:48

Pistey I think you'll be ok until at least tomorrow morning, no need to camp behind your front door wink

<whispers - it is actually square even though I'd put my name down for one of the wonky ones> Got in a complete muddle last night trying on my practice needles to cast off so went into wool shop in town and a lovely lady showed me how to do it. So easy when shown, step by step pictures in book where getting me all confused

Am thinking I might have a go at a second one, I might just have time if you think you might need more?

TimeForCake Tue 29-May-12 17:05:11

One square completed! <twirls>

It's only taken me since the start of these threads grin.
I hope the second one will come on a leeeetle bit quicker.
Am just going to repeat Knotty's mantra for the benefit of myself anyone else who may be a bit wibbly wobbly with their hook/needles like me..."simple squares are good, simple squares are essential."

As for that little mouse Pidj...totally gorgeous!

KnottyLocks Tue 29-May-12 18:10:36

Ah yes, the mantra smile. Tis very true.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 29-May-12 19:30:22

Cakey!

Will you be running on Saturday?

And for what it's worth, I'm wibbly wobbly with or without a crochet hook grin

No woolly wool arrivals to report but lots of PMs, I am away there now thanks

TimeForCake Tue 29-May-12 19:46:44

grin Pistey! I feel like that some days too.
It remains to be seen whether I shall be running on Saturday but I'm in with a chance! Famous last words...

How are your woolly efforts coming on? You mentioned little flowers - am v impressed by that!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 29-May-12 19:58:09

erm..... well I have finished the two grannies. One is purple with a green border and the other is green with a purple border, and now they need something in the middle. But the one flower I can sorta make is too small. So I need to try something new, and that is what I haven't quite got to yet...

TimeForCake Tue 29-May-12 20:28:05

Pistey, you're coming on in leaps and bounds from your early loose hooker days wink. Good for you! Colours sound lovely together. I have gone for cream this time so hope it will blend in nicely with the other woolly lovelies.

I just got the DK book of knitting this one - has anyone else got this? It's great.

I got it from WH Smiths where it is on special offer at £15, and I had a voucher for £5 off if you spend £15 - so £10.

Lots of big how to photos and stitch patterns.

Anyway, I am on my 3rd square, so the sheep will shortly be galloping...

Quick question. Are all the blankets the same size? How many squares do they normally have?

PurplePidjinghamPalace Mon 04-Jun-12 08:57:49

Erm <counts on fingers> first one i did was 5' square, next two were 6'x4' which was easier to manage! Then a charity one from leftovers 4' square.

Then Knotty took over.

Around 100 squares is a manageable size and weight, and gives room to snuggle as a family smile

BIWItheBold Tue 05-Jun-12 09:20:00

I have a blue ball of cashmerino so could just do a couple in that? Also have a raspberry pink if that's any good?

ChakotayBlue Wed 06-Jun-12 10:26:12

Morning. Quick question, I want to order a couple of balls of blanket wool from t'internet (not for tis blanket, I've already sent my squares). There is one described as 'pink' but looks more lilac. Are there any to avoid?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 06-Jun-12 10:38:10

Chakotay - did you see your squares have arrived safely? All is well. smile

I would say to avoid lilacs as the reason we always say warm purple is that paler lilacs are tricky to fit with other colours. Also avoid reds, orange and yellow.

Also to help with colours fitting in future blankets, Knotty is going to identify a particular shade cream, as they can be tricky to fit in too. So maybe avoid cream for now.

The core colours are blues, pinks, deeper purples, greens, silvery greys. It is difficult though buying online I know. If you go for any of the core colours you will be fine. And thank you thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 06-Jun-12 13:32:55

I went to the Post Office first thing to collect two parcels and initially they wanted ID with "The Blanket Projects" on. Fortunately my lovely Postie was there and she knows all about us now, so she made him hand them over: smashing grin

And then more lovely parcels came too. Fabulous, many thanks to all, you are all brilliant, thoughtful and so clever!! thanks

thanks RedRosie : Basil the Blue Sheep is adorable! And thank you for Pru too, my children think she is so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuute. [star] [ear tickle for Pru]

thanks SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius : Such beautiful knitted flower squares, I agree your donor chose the colours well. [star]

thanks Thell : Completely lovely crochet, love the colours and that pattern is beautiful [star]

thanks Whore : Absolutely gorgeous knits, plus fab crochet too [star]

thanks 100years : Lovely pale blue and pink crochet, I shall take the photos for you in a mo, but these are smashing. [star]

thanks TomblibooTrousers : Fabulous pink knits, each with a different pattern, lovely textures, all stunning. [star]

thanks MinnieBar : The star is lovely as is the owl, and I see raindrops! So clever. All gorgeoise. [star]

Posting on both threads as usual, but thank you so much to everyone thanks

Osmiornica Wed 06-Jun-12 17:10:35

Very sorry for the delay but mine will be on their way 1st class tomorrow.

tribpot Wed 06-Jun-12 17:19:04

Pistey, as the blankets are only allowed to be in two types of yarn at the moment (for very good reason) there's actually a finite set of colours on the 'okay' list and the 'banned' list. I wonder if we could actually be quite prescriptive about which to choose if in any doubt?

My absolute fave is the silvery grey 'Mist' (505) but hopefully this shade card gives you some ideas, Chakotay. And in the interests of balance, one for Debbie Bliss too.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 06-Jun-12 17:47:00

I love 'mist' too - that's the wool colour Knots used to hook together and edge the Anthony Nolan blanket.

My current favourite is Rowan vamp - a deep purple, although having taken on donor wool this time, it has been really lovely making with someone else's choice.

But to the point, adding more guidance in terms of colours is definitely something to think about, it's not always easy buying online re colours. I tried taking some photos today of squares and the colours don't look right iyswim. So thank you trib, wil def think on. X

tribpot Wed 06-Jun-12 17:54:37

No, it's one of the problems I have with using my iPhone for colours, Pistey. They rarely come out true unless the light outside is just right. Which most of the time doesn't really matter (bar the confusion that Dave La Brioche Donkey was blue) but I reckon a cheap-ish digi could probably do better.

The vamp I had never thought about as it looks so close to black on the shade card but this project on Rav shows how lovely it is!

PurplePidjin Wed 06-Jun-12 18:35:03

I had Vamp donated, it's fab! I'm off on a trian adventure tomorrow and have saved some so i can mix it with some of the pinks i have as leftovers grin (have done two specific squares already)

prettybird Wed 06-Jun-12 18:40:57

The rich/dark purple Debbie Bliss is also very lovely.smile

I used the Rowan cream this time is it seemed more "cream" than the supposedly "off" white Debbie Bliss which, to me, was practically pure white.

KnottyLocks Wed 06-Jun-12 18:46:45

evening all smile

'Vamp' was the colour that was used to hook and edge Whatevertheweather and Chipmonkey's blankets. It is gorgeous.

I really liked the 'Mist' too: I deliberately chose a completely different shade to previous blankets to give the Nolan blanket a different feel to it.

Re. the prescriptive list, there are certainly colours to avoid grin but the list would be fairly huge. Will have a think on it, certainly. Might be easier to list colours to avoid!

PurplePidjin Wed 06-Jun-12 19:06:19

I'm sure Way Back When, i did a list of suggested colours for Rinders's blanket. Anyone fancy rooting around in the archives?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 07-Jun-12 16:16:49

Now Piste: the tablet is not all for you - it is for Pidj and Knottylocks too!

...just saying.... wink

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 07-Jun-12 16:20:18

what tablet?

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 07-Jun-12 16:22:23

and thank you for the choc lolly Alibubbles thanks

prettybird Thu 07-Jun-12 16:24:04

there were ten pieces in each bag

....just saying..... wink

MOSagain Thu 07-Jun-12 18:13:44

ooh, were we supposed to send bribes/pressies to the woolly co-ordinators to get our squares included? wink

KnottyLocks Thu 07-Jun-12 18:34:34

Bribes? Bribes? shock

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm Thu 07-Jun-12 20:16:32

Ahem, there aren't any bribes pressies in with my squares this time because there is no chocolate in the house AT ALL. How did that happen??? confused I could have sent a bottle of Asti, but it wouldn't fit in the envelope!

tribpot Thu 07-Jun-12 20:31:36

I didn't even put my name in with my squares! Bribes! That'll be the day! wink

prettybird Thu 07-Jun-12 20:58:27

They're not bribes, they're tokens of appreciation for all the hard work the hookers and their minder have been doing/are embarking upon grin

if tribpot and Glaikit ask nicely I might send them some from my next batch 'cos I know they appreciate tablet unlike some Sassenachs who make disparaging comments about the Scots' sweet tooth

So pleased my simple squares arrived! grin
Knotty -thank you for finishing of my baby square! wine

It looks like these blankets will be super big and super snuggly!

Sorry for the lack of treats pistey I ate them blush it was a mad week! smile

AllMuddledUp Thu 07-Jun-12 21:20:19

I'm intrigued by these tablets, what are they?

I have just wrapped up my squares ready to post tomorrow, I had to laugh as of course I forgot to put the note in, so had to add another layer of brown paper, it'll be like opening a pass the parcel!

No bribes in there I'm afraid sad though you all deserve many lovely things for your hard work I am just a bit impoverished at the moment (thanks DH and DDad for having birthdays within 2 days of each other and one of them on Father's day too!)

tribpot Thu 07-Jun-12 21:20:19

I'm sure 'token of appreciation' is just another term for bribe, bird wink

PurplePidjin Thu 07-Jun-12 21:39:03

Contributions are not necessary to ensure square inclusion, they just speed our hooks somewhat wink

thanks

prettybird Thu 07-Jun-12 21:42:32

Tablet is a Scottish speciality: a cross between toffee and fudge, which is made from 2lb sugar, 1/4lb butter, can of condensed milk and some milk and involves lots of stirring/beating.

AllMuddledUp Thu 07-Jun-12 21:46:55

Wow, that sounds gorgeous, you had me at the 2lbs of sugar wink I've got a dreadful sweet tooth.

I wonder if I could persuade MIL to have a go at making some...

MOSagain Fri 08-Jun-12 08:13:22

envy as a newly diagnosed diabetic I am positively drooling at the thought of those yummy tablets!

PurplePidjin Fri 08-Jun-12 08:35:07
prettybird Fri 08-Jun-12 08:35:49

Sorry about your diagnosis MOS. Maybe you could have a piece when you need to get some sugar in quickly?

By the way - for those poor people who have never come across tablet, it is never used in the plural. I suppose it could be in certain circumstances - as in making batches in a number of flavours= different tablets.

MOSagain Fri 08-Jun-12 09:58:30

blush at lack of tablet knowledge. Would be a much nicer 'fix' than lucozade I imagine.

nickelbarapasaurus Fri 08-Jun-12 11:12:13

do you fetch all of your squares from the caller's office?

i sent mine wednesday afternoon, and other people's packets sent in the same batch have already arrived. smile

smile

SoupDragon Fri 08-Jun-12 13:09:37

Hours I spent at the PO yesterday, having battled through wind and rain in a valiant attempt to catch the post I didn't spend the afternoon learning chainless TC foundation for a ripple blanket, leap off the sofa swearing at about 4pm and drive to the PO where there was no queue. Oh no no no.. They had better arrive today...

SoupDragon Fri 08-Jun-12 13:10:38

As I said in a PM, use the squares where you wish. There are 2 bears and 2 "personalised" ones but apart from that they are fine for either smile

WhoremoaneeMajesty Fri 08-Jun-12 14:48:48

AM glad they arrived safely pistey. And i'm not last one in for a change....

AllMuddledUp Fri 08-Jun-12 14:56:42

PurplePidjin Fri 08-Jun-12 15:40:41

It's Fathers' Day and for many this day will be a difficult one.

Thinking of all the families for whom the blankets are made.

Thinking of our many crafters and donors for whom this day will also be very hard.

Sending much love to you all and the strength to get you through this day and beyond.

Such a beautiful and touching contribution has arrived for this Blanket Project.I am almost lost for words.

A box full of woolly treasure has arrived from MrsY herself, her family and friends, such a moving gesture. These will be the heart of your blanket MrsY X
The squares are full of love and strength, and I was quite blown away by that as I unpacked them. And, they are all so beautiful - initials, daisies, stripes, stars, hearts, flowers, bobbles and textures. All just lovely. thanks

Thinking of precious Benedict and sending you and your family love xx
