A Blanket for Greengoose: sign up thread for knitters, crocheters and donors.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 13:48:53

We heard yesterday the very sad news that Greengoose's beautiful baby daughter, Merryn passed away. Greengoose's thread can be found here

We have offered to make a blanket for the family. We hope that it may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball plus P&P.

Crafters, if you need wool, please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

* or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

* 4mm knitting needles or hooks

* knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

* 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, pinks, greens, silvers and cream

Ideas for squares:

Birds have a symbolic meaning to the family so if you could incorporate any bird design that would be lovely.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support.

thanks

GentleOtter Tue 08-May-12 13:54:57

This is heartbreakingly sad news and I don't know what to say but send Greengoose my love.

Count me in for a woolly hug square or two - I still have plenty of the cashsoft left so will get knitting.

I will knit some squares for you - I have a ball of pink Rowan Cashsoft at home left over from the blanket I knitted for my daughter.

I was offered an MN blanket when I lost my DS and - although I declined the offer because I had a lovely blanket already from my knitting club - I always said I would contribute to one for somebody else.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 15:28:10

Hello Treats smile Thank you so much for your offer. We were only talking about you yesterday. Lovely to see you here. x

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 15:30:22

Hey
A slightly soggy me signing in as a knitter for this project - so sad.
I'm due in two weeks so will do as much as I can but it probably won't be as much as normal - despite the fact that this project and MrsY's are so close to my own situation - will do my best.
I have some wool left from previous projects but if there was any donated wool I could be sent that will be lovely - will PM.
Hugs and Kisses
KNT

doh. reckon it's me that has the pms...

greengoose Tue 08-May-12 19:58:12

Em, don't really know what to say. You've all made me cry, but in a good way...

Thank you so much. This is just so incredibly thoughtful of you....

I have said elsewhere, but I think I should share this here; As we were coming home from London after Merryn died I was trying to find something to give me hope, or some sort of peace or something. My DH agreed that the gift we had from our little time with Merryn was to be shown the incredible kindness of people, often of strangers. This has been demonstrated time and time againg over the three weeks since. Your blanket will be how I explain this over the years to my boys... Every square a proof of it. How amazing. Merryn was so small, but she has changed this about the way I see things.

A lovely lovely mum called 5Madthings has donated a ball of 'kingfisher' wool its a blue green colour.... She's got a little girl called Merryn too, and has been so kind...l would really love if some of this wool made it into our blanket if possible, it would be nice to think of the other little Merryn when we get it.... I hope that's ok to ask..... Thanks again.

PurplePidjin Tue 08-May-12 20:01:52

Greenhouse, thank you for having the courage to post here so soon. I'm sure 5Mad's Merryn's wool can be given pride of place thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 20:02:26

Hello my lovely X

Sending love to you and your family and thinking of Merryn. And 5Madthings' kingfisher wool will be in your blanket, you can rely on that
Xx

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 20:02:28

Greengoose, this is your blanket and we will do whatever we can to make it as personal and significant as possible for you, your family and Merryn.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post on this thread. I know how much this has meant to crafters and donors on previous projects.

Much love to you and your family. x

DonkeyTeapot Tue 08-May-12 20:09:47

mummyinspain Tue 08-May-12 20:55:40

I.m not in the Uk but if someone can get wool to me I will knit. I lapsed many years ago (last thing I knitted was a blanket for my friend who's DD went to sleep at 6 months) I can't think of a better reason to start knitting again. I would love to help so if someone felt they could send some wool to me I would be very grateful.

mummyinspain Tue 08-May-12 20:59:48

sorry sleep is supposed to be stars, dam auto correct

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 21:02:00

mummyinspain - I shall PM you, hang on......

mummyinspain Tue 08-May-12 21:11:29

Thanks Piste, I know you will have lots of "uk" knitters but I would just love the oportunity to help.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:12:57

Mummyinspain, we've had overseas knitters before so know it's possible smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 21:13:43

The furthest away crafter on a blanket project that I remember was New Zealand!

Alambil Tue 08-May-12 21:17:10

oh no sad

Please may I be included on the crafter list - can't afford wool, though I'm afraid.

My mum has also offered to be a recipient for donated wool, if that is ok

I will pm pistey

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:17:17

And we had squares for Edgar's thread from Thailand smile

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:18:14

Lewis, we'll sort wool for you. smile

PurplePidjin Tue 08-May-12 21:18:41

Yep, for Edgar's quilt we had contributions from NZ and Thailand. We've also had donors from North America and Canada.

There is at least one other European crafter smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 21:23:39

We had a donor from Japan last time.

mummyinspain Tue 08-May-12 21:35:22

oh purple I didn't mean anything (sorry if I've offended someone) but when I tried to get involved in a couple of similar things (different forum) was told nope!

But then this is why I love MN everyone is welcome

Off to get my needles out of the wardrobe and dust them off.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:37:38

Blimey, we welcome everyone here and it's lovely to have you on board. You have offended not! smile

I'll happily crochet for both. Will PM you Pistey, just marking my place on the thread.

PurplePidjin Tue 08-May-12 21:45:41

You haven't! All efforts are appreciated, and Knotty and I can and will make pretty much any square fit the blanket.

In 11 blankets we haven't frogged a single square! mine don't count

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 21:49:13

Tis true! mine don't count either

Oh so sad. I read Greengoose's thread at work earlier and was in tears. And for it to be the second blanket in such a short space of time is just so poignant.

PMing Pistey now.

100years Tue 08-May-12 22:01:43

Just seen there are two blankets sadly needed. Have PMd my offer to do some for both.

Would love to knit again. So sad -
Thoughts and love to family. Can provide wool and knit it up.

Pistey, and Knotty -

thanks and massive kudos to you for organising this (and all other lovely blankets). As others have said, so heartwarming. I can't knit to save my life but would love to donate some wool. New to this - Do I buy it and post it to someone who knows what to do with it? Or can I send some money and the Someone Who Knows would be able to buy it? I would probably buy the wrong stuff, knowing me...

I will in any case send a PM.

KnottyLocks Tue 08-May-12 23:13:00

HTD, if you PM the Piste, she will match you up and give you details on what to get and where to send it to. Thanks so much.

Thanks Knotty. I've given her my email address. You guys are [stars].

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 08-May-12 23:25:15

I am thinking that is me done for the night Zzzzzzzzz

I will reply to PMs that come in now in the morning, but thank you everyone, it is such a heartwarming response, I feel quite blown away by it thanks
Night X

bloggingmamatotwo Wed 09-May-12 07:50:34

Just read this and the link to the blankets site and being fairly new I am truly overwhelmed by you all, what an amazing community and sisterhood, with tears in my eyes, you should be so proud of the unity this project provides, symbolises and reflects.....amazing women, you should be proud that together in grief you offer such support.....

Being unable to do anything as wonderful as knit or crochet, I can offer to donate some wool.....

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 07:52:49

Welcome BloggingMama smile

People are remarkable, aren't they?

I'm off to work too. Will check in when I can. Thanks for everyone's support thanks

I'll do a square or two. Is there a time limit?

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 08:57:03

We haven't set a last posting date yet. It's normally 3-4 weeks after we start the thread to allow wool to get where it's needed and crafters to make their squares.

OpheliaBumps Wed 09-May-12 10:43:43

I've pm'd pistey, so sad that more blankets are needed sad

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 16:27:38

Back from work and it's lovely to see more woolly offers. Thank you all so much thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-May-12 17:34:22

I am quite hopeful that some donor wool will arrive with crafters tomorrow

<fingers crossed>

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-May-12 19:37:22

Just a reminder..

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, pinks, greens, silvers and cream

PurplePidjin Wed 09-May-12 19:40:40

Pistey, i know you always have swathes of generous volunteers but if you have more donors than crafters, send a ball or two my way wine

I second purplePidgin I would be happy to make more squares with donated wool. I have a ball or two coming for this blanket and MrsYs so if you do then please send some my way to.

Just had an email from cucumberpatch saying one of the colours I ordered is out of stock - at the bottom it said Am I right in assuming this is for another lovely mumsnet blanket grin Your reputation precedes you ladies shall I say yes and can we have a discount!!

PurplePidjin Wed 09-May-12 20:11:06

Crafters, bear in mind you'll get at least 5 squares from two balls of wool, possibly six...

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 20:31:38

If anyone is up for knitting initials, we would like an M, a J and a K for Greengoose's blanket

Thanks thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-May-12 20:34:02

Ah that is lovely WTW, not the wool that is out of stock part, the fact the WoollyCu have recognised the lovely blankets. We've tried to engage with them before, but never had a response, I wrote to them yesterday to give them the heads up on the two new blankets we were starting, but didn't hear anything.

But yes, we want a discount!

What colour is out of stock?

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 20:35:27

Cucumberpatch are getting used to us now!
I imagine our orders are quite distinctive: one or two balls of special wool, in certain colourways, to a completely different address, often to people with strange nicknames.

Because we are special smile

5madthings Wed 09-May-12 20:37:25

when i orderd from cucmberpatch i said it was for a very special blanket and explained a bit, so maybe they have caught on, i do hope they give a discount. i shall check my emails re my order, i hope the colour i ordered isnt out of stock!

I havnt received an eamil yet from them so hoping my order is ok and on its way. Been looking at birds and initials, might see what I can do with my crochet hook, might have to rope in my mum, shes an expert maker uper of patterns, and also can look at a piece of crochet and know how to make it without looking at the pattern.

5madthings Wed 09-May-12 20:43:48

i have just checked and i just have the thankyou for your order and receipt type message back along with the details of my order and the addy i ask it to be sent to, so that seems fine smile

It was colour no 24 in the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK. Came from a nice man named Daniel smile

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 21:28:29

And did nice Daniel say when it would be in stock or offer an alternative? smile

tribpot Wed 09-May-12 21:37:28

Deramores have it in stock I think - I ordered mine (not shade 24, mind) today.

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 21:42:32

Fingers and thumbs. com have 24 in stock (or their website says so!)

Stick a note in for Kate saying it's for the Woollyhugs: she knows all about the blankets and she'll hopefully get it sent asap.

About a week Knotty so I've changed it to no 45 instead smile

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 21:58:40

45 is lovely smile

Disclaimer: no where near my age, for I am young and vibrant.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-May-12 21:59:44

KnottyLocks Wed 09-May-12 22:01:30

Oi!

maxmissie Wed 09-May-12 22:03:23

Have already pm'd Pistey but have sent a ball of wool to my knitter today via ebay so hopefully they should get it soon.

Wish I could knit but am absolutely hopeless. The MN blankets are stirring the thought that I should try again though.

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 09-May-12 22:09:07

Have replied to all lovely PMs, many thanks everyone thanks

NessaRose Wed 09-May-12 22:10:57

maxmissie If you are local to me I could teach you.

tribpot Wed 09-May-12 22:13:38

Morning Pistey. You lovely thing.

RedRosie Thu 10-May-12 06:34:46

Do have a go maxmissie. I learned to knit from scratch in January, and I am very old and butterfingered. I did two squares for the last two blankets, and Knotty didn't frog 'em.

There's lots of help. smile

KnottyLocks Thu 10-May-12 07:33:57

No I didn't frog em grin

Morning all smile

Last posting date for squares is Saturday 2nd June

You can post your squares before this though. When you are ready, PM Pistey or me and we'll give you the details.

thanks

Thank you, thank you, thank you for my woolly donor (initials HM in Newcastle!) The wool from Cucumberpatch arrived this morning - lovely purple and pale yellow. Will do my best to do your generosity justice smile

My wool arrived this morning too - thank you to my donor. I will do my best to knit decently enough to make us both vaguely proud!

I hope my wool arrives either today or tomorrow, I want to get started. Keep picking up hook but have nothing to crochet!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-May-12 13:26:14

Fabulous that woolly wool is already arriving with crafters. Well done the Donors grin

Lots of lovely PMs to go through, please bear with me.
In the mean time, have a look at this

Umami Thu 10-May-12 13:59:13

My yarn has arrived! thanks to my lovely donor LW. Beautiful rich purple and teal-y greeny blue.

It arrived an hour ago, so could have made a start while DS was napping, but postie chucked it over the gate and I've only just realised angry. DS will be up any minute.

Ho hum. I do believe I need to remember how to crochet first anyway!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-May-12 14:10:52

Sounds gorgeoise Umami!

All PMs replied to, many thanks everyone, lots of lovely donors to thank later. Speedy bunch our lovely donors!!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 10-May-12 16:05:45

Another lovely pile of PMs replied to! thanks

tummytickler Thu 10-May-12 16:27:12

Such sad news sad
I would be more than happy to knit a couple of squares if you still need some. I am not the best knitter in the world, but I could do something simple. Will PM Pistey.

Yay the wool has arrived! So excited and its lovely as always. Ball of pink, Ball of Blue and a ball of green.

Will get my thinking hat on tonight and come up with some creations for both blankets. Have to wait till Spatz the kitten is asleep I think.

Count me in and I have PMed you!

notpodd Thu 10-May-12 17:40:12

Good news - I've done 10 rows without dropping a single stitch! And it is the right width thus far. I'm very proud and more than a little pathetic

Ordered my wool today and delighted to share in the blankets but of course wish they were not needed.
Cucumber patch were fab on the phone, asked if it was 2 balls I wanted and said they knew about the mumsnet blankets.
They gave me discount on postage- charged me for one lot rather than 3 which was nice of them.
Happy knitting!!

KnottyLocks Fri 11-May-12 06:58:14

Fantabulous, Frank. Thanks.

No idea about Peter Jones, sorry. You're probably more likely to find the Rowan Cashsoft DK in shops than the Debbie Bliss. No idea why. We have a list of online suppliers if you need them.

Pistey, did you get my pm? 2 balls of wool arrived from cafe knit; dusky pink and a silver grey. Not sure which thread to post on, but many thanks to my donor. thanks

Morning all brew.

Was too lazy to start knitting last night - went for beer, takeaway and an early night instead - but going to get started on square 1 today. Just wishing I'd thought to write down how many stitches I cast on for my Mrs K squares now. More trial and error I guess.

tribpot Sat 12-May-12 09:35:08

Barbara, I took the liberty of having a scan through the old support thread and so can quote this back to you: "37 stitches on 3.75mm needles seems to give me just under 6" by the way. Does that make me tight? <fnar>"

I'm struggling for a bird pattern, so would be grateful if anyone can link to one.

OpheliaBumps Sat 12-May-12 21:43:03

Doh! Just read Trib's support thread and saw all the bird pattern links!

tribpot Sat 12-May-12 21:45:33

Alambil Wed 16-May-12 22:36:22

I don't know exactly - lost my tape measure <waaah>

It looks enormous, but when I put it against the others, it's about half an inch wider, so perhaps just an optical illusion

I shall measure it and frog it if it's enormous - I don't mind because it was a "make up as I go along" pattern!

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 16-May-12 22:41:45

Why don't you just send it Lewis?
I do know that 6" squares seem to come in all shapes and sizes!

Alambil Wed 16-May-12 22:46:07

I'd rather measure it first lol <paranoid>

it'll only take me a couple hours to do it again if it needs so won't hold anything up smile

KnottyLocks Wed 16-May-12 22:46:49

6" squares do indeed come in all shapes and sizes smile

Just send it, Lewis. We'll sort it out. smile

FrankWippery Wed 16-May-12 22:58:22

Thank you for the thanks and wine , remiss of me not to say it sooner.

Anyway I am on it, as you were, and will send you two lots of squares, for each blanket. Will send them separately just in case you've been on the gin again and get confuddled. wink

Fingers crossed!

Morning - my wool arrived this morning! Thank you very much to an MNer whose initials are CT! A lovely pink and purple, I can't wait to get started tonight!

Just checking in. Have had no broadband for a week [wail] which makes browsing for new square patterns rater difficult!

SoupDragon Thu 17-May-12 17:05:51

I know - I want to cry. I have to either steal next door's (I did mention it to them today and they're fine!) or use my phone as a wireless hotspot. Neither god for prolonged browsing!

I've done 2 bear squares and one other and have the next one lined up in my head so I should be fine until the engineer arrives on Saturday.

SoupDragon Thu 17-May-12 17:06:20

Good, not god.

[rolls eyes]

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 17-May-12 17:37:57

<passes gin to Soupy and her bears>

When is the last date to send the goodies? I have bought a few books on squares via Amazon - amazing what a square can be! I can sense I will be getting into this - is there a word to describe this?! I decided to buy some books after 'designing' one which failed! I have turned the failed one into a coaster by embellishing it and will include it in the package in case you think it may be liked. I need to read upon intarsia as I really did get into a mess! I tried to keep it all flat but it did fold in the middle.

I could get the squares to you by mid week next week for both blankets. Hope this is OK?

Cheerio thanks

dC5 unraveled my nearly finished square today sad

Oh no, how frustrating MrsD. I was watching my DCs play outdoors the while I crocheted the other week, the piece of paper with my pattern blew away, I ran after it, not realising the wool was round my ankle and undid about 2 hours worth of work, grrr. And all the other mums laughed at me!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 18-May-12 18:38:15

So sorry WhoKnows, I laughed too. blush

<gasps at the outrageousness of MrsDv's DC5>

KnottyLocks Fri 18-May-12 22:35:27

Oh arse, MrsDV. Mine have destroyed many a square on the past. Luckily, they have learnt not to now.

Touch wool.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere Fri 18-May-12 22:40:59

Its the knitting needles they are after.
Little buggers.

Due to my extreme foolishness in having two babies in my 40s, I have sodding years of this meddling ahead of me havent I <curses>

KnottyLocks Fri 18-May-12 23:56:21

Maybe not smile

I transferred my affections to crochet: hook is less pointy and less fascinating for my little fellas. Granted they ate a wee bit younger than your little DC smile

Also, my two are so used to seeing wool arriving and me with an on-going project on my lap, they have weened themselves off the initial thrill of picnic my tools smile

DS1 fancies Keaton to knit now though. Hid father is less keen grin

Frog frog frogetty frog... confused grin

Hi all!

I've finished my yarn!

BUT I am 2 granny square cluster thingies away from finishing the last square!!!
Should I frog it? It is just a plain granny square. But it's SO close to being finished.

Can I have some woolly hugs words of wisdom please!

PurplePidjin Sun 27-May-12 21:15:13

What colour is it, there might be a match in my bag of ends - or Knotty's smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-May-12 21:15:57

How about you frog that round and then send it to me and I'll put another round on to make it to the right size, like a border?

Cake - going well then?

I have replied to Pms thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 27-May-12 21:21:14

Get me Knotty grin

Technical terms and an offer to help someone with their crochet In the same sentence.

Whatever next? wine cheers!

Hi piste and pidj!

It's a cream colour - Debbie bliss colour 18013.
I don't mind frogging a round but if you've got a scrap that would work too I guess. Whatever's easiest for who ever gets to hook the squares together. smile

PurplePidjin Sun 27-May-12 21:46:14

I have a scrap that looks cream in this light...

PM me your address and I'll pop it in the post smile

TimeForCake Sun 27-May-12 21:47:47

Back on track now! Square coming on ok ish for the time being. Think I have now crocheted more than I have frogged today! grin

Pidj - piste has instructed me to frog the last round and she said she'll stick a border on it. Thanks for the wool offer tho smile but we're going on holiday on Wednesday so I wouldn't get it done for the deadline.
Although I will be taking a bag of hooky business with me! grin

TimeForCake Sun 27-May-12 21:51:32

Ps Pistey you are certainly going up in the woolly world! Technical terms and offering to help? Marvellous! grin I reckon your real woolly roots lie elsewhere though. wink

thell Mon 28-May-12 11:24:39

Morning!! ooh, I could do with a real life brew

I got all my yarn finally last week - I've finished two squares and not far off with a third. I'm aiming for four altogether, but how many is usual? I wouldn't want to leave you short. I've got plenty of yarn I think.

I'm on hols next week too, so will post soon.

thell Mon 28-May-12 11:26:45

Posted first class my parcel of random goodies!!!!

Pasta bee - yes, I, too, had to be brave going to a mega grumpy PO (people will travel to avoid going to this one if they can! Interestingly cheap pregnancy tests for sale as well as Sellotape, bubble wrap, bunting ....). I decided to be extra smiley and thanked them for having a fan in the long queue. I did get a little smile back. I then said good morning to any elderly person walking by and spread smiles around! Have a go! It gives everyone a feel good factor!

Please miss, sorry miss, I think my homework might be late miss <fidgets nervously>

I posted it last night once we'd arrived at holiday. But I think the bank holiday might mean it will be late. confused
Really sorry if it is late - its been a mad week with observations at work from evil big-wigs and then trying to pack for holiday with the dc (3&1) undoing everything I did!

Hope I'm not causing trouble! blush

KnottyLocks Thu 31-May-12 07:18:13

Don't panic, my lovely smile

No problem and no trouble.

Yep, last posting date is this Saturday smile

Phew! blush
I am never late for anything as it makes me a little twitchy. But have been rather frazzled and mixed up post by and arrive by. D'oh!

Holiday is much needed and feel SO much more relaxed already - dispute the fact we're staying with ILs. We did get some much needed babysitting last night and went to the pub! I haven't been fr an evening pub trip in way too long! grin

Hurray!
What lovely ladies you are. So fab to be part of something this lovely.

Shall I say it again?

Lovely!!

I'll be posting my squares tomorrow, this week has been a bit hectic (at least in my head there has been chaos.)

A couple of my crocheted squares seem to be particularly...erm...airy. Gappy.
How does this work out with the knitted squares which are more on the solid side? <bites nails>

Hurrah, glad they arrived safely x

KnottyLocks Thu 31-May-12 22:53:56

Thell, have a look at the blankets on the Woolly Hugs website. You'll see that crochet squares and knitted ones sit very happily together. It really does give the blankets a very unique and special look. smile

Oh I missed this one. And the sadness about Greengoose's DD until I saw another thread in Bereavement yesterday from another MNer whose prem DS has just died as well, and she posted on that thread.

So sad.

Well done to all of you again - so sorry that I didn't find out in time to help out this time but next time (sadly it's bound to be necessary) I'll be here.

prettybird Sat 02-Jun-12 18:02:48

JulesJules - did you see my post earlier (not sure if it was on this thread or the other one) warning you that some of the patterns from that lovely big fat knitting book are wrong perhaps not edited as well as they could have been.

If you PM me, I can tell you the ones I've had problems with so far (and wic ones worked well!) (3 out of the 9 squares that I produced using new techniques/new patterns from the book here had some problems - in particular the blue one with the wee holes in it, which tribpot ended up helping me with)

Having said that, it's a good book for describing basic techniques.

JulesJules Sat 02-Jun-12 20:37:43

Oh I did prettybird and thanks for the warning. I am a fairly basic knitter, so have only attempted easy squares so far, the honeycomb one worked well.

Could the royal mail help and deliver the parcels like they do for businesses etc? Not sure what I am talking about really - how about a large red zip up sack delivered at a time to suit you?

Another fundraising idea - is there a wool association?! Or a sheep farmers association?! Or a national knitters club? Or one of those knitting magazines but I guess they would want an article.

There's a hand knitters assn and all sorts on google!!

Photo on profile of my square, I'm afraid they are only garter stitch, but I didn't have the time and concentration to do patterned ones this time - (post concussion illness = foggy head, don't ask!) but I know that plain squares are needed, so I have called them "joiner" square!

I'm glad I wrote your name with (The Blanket Project) on the second line.

Hopefully you'll get it tomorrow!

I forgot to specify which squares are for which (although to tell the truth, I'm happy for them to go into either blanket) but I knitted the bird thinking of Greengoose, the "feather and fan" pattern (that's the one with wavy edges) thinking of specifically of Mrs Y and the star one was also thinking of Mrs Y.

PurplePidjin Wed 06-Jun-12 17:00:21

These are going to be gorgeoise blankets! smilesmile

Soooo much hard work has gone into them smile

Glad my final two turned up ok after the bank holiday weekend - the snuggly one is brioche - agree on the snuggly-ness although it is VERY slow work! Not sure I'd ever have the patience to do a whole garment in it!

prettybird Fri 08-Jun-12 21:45:07

I must try brioche the next time smile - I've enjoyed extending my techniques for these blankets.

I did Fisherman's Rib for the first time for one of my squares. It was very slow but a lovely snuggly rib - is brioche done in a similar way?

SoupDragon Sat 09-Jun-12 08:55:54

Isn't brioche some kind of bread...?

PurplePidjin Sat 09-Jun-12 10:32:44

It's what French folk eat when they can't afford the regular stuff, Soupy wink

tribpot Sat 09-Jun-12 11:19:48

bird, if you have a look back at the support thread you can find my notes on brioche in excruciating detail. And yes, it is similar to the Fisherman's Rib, doesn't involve knitting into the row below.

Did you do a one or two colour brioche, KnitterNotTwitter? I really like both and it creates such a lovely fabric. Arse-and-a-half to do though!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 09-Jun-12 20:20:34

KnitterNotTwitter's brioche was all in cream. It is such a super snuggly knit, that is for sure!

<sheepish> My squares are finished. But... one is only 5.5" square and I don't know how I didn't realise before I snipped the wool blush. I thought I'd try and add some sort of border, but since I was making it up as I go along, it was less than successful. Can anyone explain in basic terms what I can do? Shall I just send the one that is the right size?
Sorry to be a pain.

TimeForJubileeCake Sun 10-Jun-12 09:34:30

Thanks Pistey, will do. I think I may still have your address but if you could pm it again, just to be sure I don't send them to Knotty by mistake.
Please don't spend extra time sorting out my smaller one, I know how busy you all are. I won't be at all offended if it's not used. I just need to improve! smile

thanks Pistey, you're a star.

SoupDragon Sun 10-Jun-12 10:07:45

Can I just say that the purple ball I had was really poor quality. It had loads of fluffy lumps and bumps in it and more knots than I would have expected although the latter won't have been helped when I kept snipping the wool at the end of a row without thinking.

prettybird Sun 10-Jun-12 10:16:18

My two balls of Rowan were a bit like that. Haven't had that problem with the Debbie Bliss wool.

SoupDragon Sun 10-Jun-12 10:24:26

Yes, I think this may have been Rowan... I can't remember now.

TimeForJubileeCake Sun 10-Jun-12 10:46:14

Funnily enough, I bought a ball of Debbie bliss which was a bit like that- lots of knots, but it was one of the first balls I bought so I wasn't too sure what to expect! The last few I have bought have been Rowan and have been fine.
Swings & roundabouts I guess.
