The first thread is nearing the 1000 post limit due to such amazing support.

This thread is a continuation of that thread which can be found here

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 15:42:54

PurplePidjin Mon 12-Mar-12 15:47:57

Can someone please remind me how to cast off so I can sit on this train and finish? thanks

I've done 2 knitted and 4 crochet squares and I'll label the donor ones so they definitely get used - the others are from leftovers and can be ignored if you like. Much better to have one square per person than 20 by one imo!

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 16:04:35

knit 2 stitches,
use left hand needle to pull 1st stitch on your right hand needle over the 2nd stitch and off the end of the needle.
Should be left with one stitch on your right needle.

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 16:05:43

Obv when I say repeat, I mean knit another stitch then repeat the pulling the stitch over and off bit.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 16:07:13

I am going to give Pidj knitting advice grin

You knit two as if it were a normal row, then pass the right hand stitch over the top of the left hand stitch, then knit another one, then pass the right hand one over again. All the way until you have one stitch left and then you tie it off.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 16:08:06

I'm too bloomin slow grin

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 16:10:24

Slow but correct grin

PurplePidjin Mon 12-Mar-12 16:19:49

Thank you! Knitted square number two is cast off. 6" x 6 and a bit when uncurled at the edges. Is stocking stitch supposed to do that? confused

My favourite cast off is as follows:

Knit two stitches together.
Slip the stitch you've just made off your right hand needle back onto the left hand needle.
Now knit two stitches together (so that'll be the stitch you just slipped back from left to right with another stitch)
And repeat....

This cast-off gives a slightly more stretchy edge than the traditional cast off described above....

oh well - too late...!

Yes Stocking Stitch will curl a bit - Garter stitch (where you knit every row back and forwards) doesn't curl.... neither does moss stitch...

PurplePidjin Mon 12-Mar-12 16:27:45

I now have to resist making more unless Knotty gives me either the go ahead or the pattern for Twitter birdies! Tbh I'm pretty much out of ends long enough to do anything more with grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 16:31:08

I'm going to sound really basic now, but I'm amongst friends who won't poke fun hmm

Knitter - is that slip stitch?

MinnieBar Mon 12-Mar-12 16:59:54

Signing in...

I'm going to try and sound faintly knowledgeable now, be prepared...

Knitter, would I be right in thinking that way of binding off can't be done where it says 'bind off in pattern'?? E.g. with a moss stitch?

LatteLady Mon 12-Mar-12 17:07:53

Any curling that you have can be dealt with by blocking your squares...with squares the quickest way to do is to use a cheat method. Wet a tea towel and wring it out, place over you square and press with a steam iron from the back of your square so that you don't crush the pattern.

TimeForCake Mon 12-Mar-12 17:10:25

Signing in...but may sign out quickly with all this technical talk! Pistey, you sound worryingly like you know what you're talking about. What are all these complicated words you keep saying? grin
<sits down with a spinning head>

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 17:11:31

Oi! Latte! Step away from the blocking!

I can sort out the curling this end. To be honest, it is often easier to hook the squares together without blocking. IF they need it, I'll block before hooking.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 17:19:42

Cakey - I just make it up as I go along, between you and me, I haven't actually got a clue...

PurplePidjin Mon 12-Mar-12 17:24:14

Blocking is up to the hooker-togetherer. I found it shrunk the stitches too much, so wasn't worth the effort. Plus the weight of the blanket stretches the squares into shape.

It was more of a have I done it right tbh!

Minnie - yes that bind off wouldn't work as nicely for a 'bind off in pattern'... although for squaeres for a blanket no one is going to actually see the edge once they're crocheted together so I tend to just bind off that way even if the instructions say to bind off in pattern....

pistey - a slip stitch is where you slip the stitch from one needle to another without knitting it. Normally you'd slip from right needle to the left needle. And again normally you'd 'slip as if to knit'... that is you'd poke your left needle into the loop as if you were going to knit it but then merely shimmy it acrosss to the right needle without doing the knit bit... You can 'slip as if to purl' where you poke your right needle into the loop as if you were going to purl it but just shimmy it across to the left instead. Gives two slightly different effects.... Does that answer the question? Or confuse?

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 17:27:28

Also, if all the squares are blocked it gives me less flexibility. If they aren't blocked it's easier to bring slightly different sized squares togther.

squaeres squares (mutters to self)

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 17:29:56

Not that there is any variation on the 6", oh no smile

TimeForCake Mon 12-Mar-12 17:30:39

Oh good Pistey. I don't want you turning into an expert on me just yet. grin

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 17:30:54

I'm liking the shimmying, Knitter grin

KnottyLocks Mon 12-Mar-12 17:31:18

Cakey, worry not. wink

TimeForCake Mon 12-Mar-12 17:32:17

grin <breathes sigh of relief>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 12-Mar-12 17:41:25

Slightly confused by the shimmying confused

TimeForCake Mon 12-Mar-12 17:47:47

Slightly...or totally?!!

pistey.... like much of knitting it's easier when you've got some stitches on a needle infront of you... rather than reading it.... Honest smile

PurplePidjin Mon 12-Mar-12 17:50:31

I'm still at the stage of muttering to myself "wiggles to the back means knit a row, wiggles to the front means purl a row"

Nice young chap who tried to chat me up on the train didn't seem to mind grinblush

Had a disaster with one of the squares, I droped the needle and all the stiches came off. Twas 5 and a half inches as well sad Of to DMs to sort it out as when I tried to pick them back up it went funny. blush

Bluebell99 Tue 13-Mar-12 09:05:10

Hi, have completed first and almost second square, could someone pm me the address to send them to? Thanks.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 09:28:06

There appears to be a technical hitch with the PM system today

It has been reported to MNHQ.

If there is a red dot to show you have a message, you may have to read it via your email link as a few of us have noticed that when we open our Inbox via MN, the message isn't displayed.

Bluebell, I'll PM you shortly.

I hope grin

upsydaisysexstylist Tue 13-Mar-12 09:47:13

Have red light thingy majig going on, pm Piste to say squares finished can I have posting address, have no idea if received as have no email notifcation either arrgh.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 10:14:15

if you go into your Inbox, click on the 'Settings' next to 'New Message' button.

You should be able to click on the email notification bit.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 10:51:39

if you go into your Inbox area and click on Settings (next to the 'New Message' button) you can switch on your email notifications, if you haven't done so already

Can someone PM me so I can see if there's been any improvement, please?

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 11:00:04

ooh, blimey, had a lump with the blocking suggestion
<<glad that i'd never heard of it before>>

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 11:16:02

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 11:46:49

Upsy, don't worry about getting them in the post today. Hope your children feel better very soon.

OpheliaBumps Tue 13-Mar-12 11:48:26

Morning all! Just marking my place on the new thread, and to let you know I've just posted:

6 squares for use in whatever blanket you prefer, Wubbly's, MrsK's or keeping for future use
1 Captain Barnacles for Wubbly's blanket - attached to a square by a natty scarf
Leftover wool (but not much of it)
A small chocolately treat for the amazing Knotty to keep you going while hooking together

It only took me 3 trips to the post office altogether, good job it's only 2 minutes down the road!

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 12:28:17

right, i've tied in all my ends.
Sorry if it makes it a mess - the edges are a big rubbish on some on them.

I've done 4 - two for each blanket.

I can't send them off today because I've already sent DH to the post office, but I'll send them tomorrow.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 13:30:37

Nickel, that's fine. The edges will be covered anyway.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 13:42:58

Lunchtime! Glad the PM problem has been resolved. hmm

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 15:04:00

there's quite a bit of wool left - do you want me to:
a) make another square (not sure if there's enough)
b) save for another time ? sad
c) send it in with my squares?
it's mostly teal but a bit of cream too.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 15:26:34

Nickel, if you could send it with your squares that would be great. smile

I can use it for embellishments, etc. Thanks.

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 15:43:30

also - should i send it to your address?
you'll need to pm me (unless you're scared i might start stalking you then a PO box will be fine grin)

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 13-Mar-12 15:44:29

Another lovely donor to thank today, we really appreciate your support.thanks

thanks Conflugenglugen

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 15:47:22

I'll PM you.

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 16:00:04

i know. i replied thanks.

was going to do smoochies, but it was obviously a standard text, so i didn't (it just didn't seem right somehow)

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 16:00:49

nickelhasababy Tue 13-Mar-12 16:01:03

i didn't understand the last word you just typed.
what does "sleep" mean?
<scared to google in case it's another dragon butter>

prettybird Tue 13-Mar-12 16:13:36

Took my knitting with me on holiday but didn't manage to finish my shrug and so start my squares. Given the deadlines, I think I'll have to leave the shrug unfinished and get on (quickly!) with the squares.

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 17:04:27

Ah yes, Prettybird, too much gadding about grin Hope you had a nice hol.

trumpton Tue 13-Mar-12 17:16:34

6 suares done and ready for posting. 3 grey and 3 deep purple. Can someone PM address please I only have RBOTP and I think they are going to Knotty.
Are the square for MrsK going to same address ?

KnottyLocks Tue 13-Mar-12 17:20:48

Trumpton, just Pmed you. Thanks once again. smile

All squares are going to the same address as so many people are crafting for both. Same blanket hookerupper too grin

WhoremoaneeGrainger Tue 13-Mar-12 19:59:07

I posted two parcels on Saturday, knotty, one marked with W the other with K. I hope they arrive tomorrow.

<marks place on new thread>

WhoremoaneeGrainger Wed 14-Mar-12 10:57:28

Knotty - i did! One knitted and one crocheted, with two green crochet and one green knit. Would have been in carboard, with a note saying from Whore, for Wubbly. The green corchet square that is a slightky different shade from the other two green was my very first crochet square!!! The two green and two blue were from my donor - thank you very much whoever you were.

The other package had two off white, two lilac and one grey. Also wrapped in carboard, with the same note, for Mrs K. The white and lilac are from my donor - thank you to you as well.

Am working on a lilc, white and pink crochet square, but am having trouble joining wool, so have unpicked it three times <sigh>.

PurplePidjin Wed 14-Mar-12 13:04:12

WG, do you want to meet up and I'll give you a hand?

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 13:45:05

My lovely Whore <arf> you must crochet and knit with the speed of a thousand gazelles!
You are fab-U-lous!

I could offer to advise you on the crochet front, but quite frankly that could be a disaster grin
Because I actually haven't got a clue

I don't mind trying though grin

LewisFan Wed 14-Mar-12 13:46:27

Whore - youtube search mikeysmail change colour for a fabulous tutorial to change colour

LewisFan Wed 14-Mar-12 13:47:30
RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 14:01:15

I was actually going to say to do it like that grin

PurplePidjin Wed 14-Mar-12 15:38:13

Get to end of row/round. Poke hook through hole as if to slip stitch and join. Instead of yarn over in Main Colour, pick up a loop of the new colour. Draw loop back through to complete the slip stitch. Tie a double knot with the loose ends of your new colour and the remaining strand of your main colour. Cut off the main colour yarn with a few inches of tail (you also need a tail on your new colour)

If you want to be really clever, arrange both tails on top of your work and crochet round them - bye bye pesky ends! Unfortunately this doesn't work very well if you're doing a regular granny because you only have a couple of stitches to hide them in. But for rows, solid grannies, flowers etc it's great grin

KnottyLocks Wed 14-Mar-12 16:28:04

Afternoon smile

I have 8 glorious packages.

Be back in a min.

Posted with a treat for the Jolly Hookers .

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 19:36:11

So yesterday Knotty was a Mighty Hooker, today she is a Jolly Hooker grin
What will it be tomorrow I wonder?!

landofsoapandglory Wed 14-Mar-12 19:39:29

Hello ladies.

I posted my squares, for both blankets, today. The post mistress gave a knowing little wink when she read the address, so now I am wondering if she has done any squares too!

LewisFan Wed 14-Mar-12 20:18:08

Weeeeewaaaah weeeeewaaaaaah

I've LOST my crochet hooks... both of them!

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 20:25:13

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 20:26:20

oh thank god I have found you all again!

I have a square to post, I am still mid knit of the other one (RL has taken over)

But it is 1st class tomorrow.

LewisFan Wed 14-Mar-12 20:28:35

I'd be rather hammered lol... the squares may end up wonky!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Wed 14-Mar-12 21:44:37

Nessa - that's one advantage of being a 'tight' knitter - the stitches never just fall off the needle they need to be forcefully removed!! Did your Mum sort it out for you?

I don't know when I can do - I'm working 6/7 for the next fortnight, then 'on call' on top of regular days for a couple of weeks after that. I have a lot of stuff to squish into the day off, so can't commit to that either sad So wont be able to do anything for at least 3 weeks, if not longer.

Lewis - I'd be checking DS hasn't 'borrowed' them for something!!

Hello Jax smile

androbbob Wed 14-Mar-12 21:47:06

knottylocks - the slightly unusual packaging was a re-cycling attempt as DS is going through a very artistic phase and there is a limit to how many treasured pictures I can keep!

LewisFan Wed 14-Mar-12 21:47:24

Panic over - I was sitting on them (under the sofa cushion!)

LatteLady Wed 14-Mar-12 22:22:32

Glad you liked them Knotty, was pleased with the crochet as I made the flower up as I went along. If there is anything else that I can do, please let me know... if there are any London or Essex knitters or hookers who need help, more than happy to do so smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 14-Mar-12 23:43:50

Last check on my PM box before bed. thanks

Night all x

LewisFan Thu 15-Mar-12 00:01:32

fourth square made - think I'll get a fifth out of the bits left, then I'll send the leftovers for hooking

The fourth one is stripey with the blue and pink donated wool; I added some cream I had already too. It's a little skinny (5.5in), but stretches to 6in wide and is already 6in tall.... hope it'll fit!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 06:38:21

Sounds lovely Lewis, you are very clever smile

Morning everyone brew

Lewis Glad you found the hooks.

well went to finish off other square and I have lost a knitting needle! Cant find it anywhere... think DD may have borrowed it and now its vanished, so when I go to the PO later I will pop into the crafty shop and buy some more needles.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 20:42:50

Trumpton - that was the Owl one I was eyeing up! I was just waiting to see if Knotty felt light or dark was more needed. I'll do a different one smile <He is very cute though isn't he!!> The shooting star sounds lovely too!!

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 20:48:05

I did him in dark grey ( Debbie Bliss shade 34 Gunmetal grey) if that helps you with a colour choice. he was easier than I thought.

KnottyLocks Thu 15-Mar-12 20:52:37

Pics should be on Pistey's profile .

Just step away from Idris smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 20:56:26

They are there now, with Idris....

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 20:57:06

No - sorry, I wasn't very clear - I meant I'd do a different design smile I bet he's lovely in the grey (might do him for myself!). There are quite a few of 'him' on Ravelry on blankets, jumpers etc. He is adorable.

What colour did you do your shooting star on?

I've done a couple of plain squares - I'm just looking for a 'special' square for Lawrie and can't find one I'm happy with. I think I am trying to put 10 million words and 10 million hugs into one square. We shouldn't need to be making this blanket sad

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 20:59:31

Oh they are lovely Trumpton smile Both of them are FAB!! They look a lovely brown on my screen - not grey at all?!

Knotty - thank you my lovely thanks

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 21:05:12

Shooting star was DB Rich Purple Shade 32. Yes I know exactly what you mean....I spent ages looking for nature type squares. I settled in the end for Owl, Bamboo, Shooting star, leaf , a double cable and a seeded square. Thank you for putting photos up. They are actually in a dark grey but the design shows up better in your photos. The sequins were from some Galaxy yard that I used at Christmas.

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 21:06:34

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 21:11:51

Ok either Knotty's camera is fucked or my laptop is grin They both look exactly the same shade of brown. A lovely brown.

KnottyLocks Thu 15-Mar-12 21:12:27

I had to stick them under a bright lamp to try to get the pattern to stand out enough for the phone camera to pick up. That's why they aren't the true colour.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 21:19:43

Ah - of well, one minor way in which the laptop isn't fucked. It's a bit of a shame it's not a 'real' colour - it's lovely smile <though I'm sure the 'original' colours are lovely too!!>

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 21:22:32

Hang on I shall see if I can enhance the colour from here! Give me two ticks smile

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 21:29:40

Umm ! The shooting star was grey as well . < mind blank moment >

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 21:30:31

Eek they are GREEN now. Trust me thay are grey in real life.

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 21:30:53

That was close! I nearly deleted Idris in doing that shock
Looking grey now I think

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 21:31:27

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 21:32:17

trumpton Thu 15-Mar-12 21:35:07

grin yep ! green on my computer ! Anyhoo leave it now or Idris might disappear ( Eek ). It was only the designs that Chipping wanted to see. Colour changes were a bonus .

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 15-Mar-12 21:37:32

Changed it back to the original grin

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Thu 15-Mar-12 22:14:11

Bugger - missed the colour changing grin

androbbob Thu 15-Mar-12 22:25:47

They look stunning! I am planning on expanding my repertoire from graany crocheted squares to something else! Buying a cheap ball of wool to practice on.......

Moodykat Thu 15-Mar-12 22:39:31

I did PM someone about the address to send my square too but must have been missed. If I'm not too late, could someone please PM me? Thanks!

Ladyface Thu 15-Mar-12 23:14:56

I think you have received my two blue Harris tweed stitch knitted squares. There should be a "from LF" in pencil on the envelope!

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 06:27:54

LadyFace, aha!
Yes there was but didn't want to say just in case the LF were someone's real name. Thanks for solving that for me. smile Lovely squares [star] thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 06:40:18

Morning brew

Moodykat - I have just PMd you, Knotty may have done too. We have had such problems with PMs, I haven't received one from you, when did you send? This worries me, the bloomin system is so unreliable! But you definitely aren't too late thanks

Away to my PM box

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 06:44:18

Yep, she's had the double whammy grin

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 06:45:33

I may be a little overtired here.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 07:04:41

grin at

wine cheers!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 07:14:10

You know Knots, I'm still not getting your PMs as emails, not since 6th March. I think I may have had one or two PMs from you since then...?! grin

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 07:25:23

Just a couple grin

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Fri 16-Mar-12 08:35:45

<backs away slowly>

MrsDanverclone Fri 16-Mar-12 12:50:47

I've just sent off my knitted squares this morning and the lady in the post office thought I was a yarn bomber!
She got quite animated on the subject, having seen knitted telephones etc, on the telly.

I didn't want to confess what a struggle knitting a few small squares had been, never mind the complexities of knitting a telephone, so didn't go into great detail about what I really had been knitting. So now, she's no doubt imaging a parcel full of knitted booties for horse statues and leg warmers for lampposts.smile

I need help please. I joined ravelry to have a nosey at the patterns and everyone elses handiwork, tried to look for patterns for squares or something that I can make.

Please help me, links, details anything. I promise not to swear at the pattern when I get stuck lies

PurplePidjin Fri 16-Mar-12 13:08:04

Jax - use the advanced pattern search. Filter for knitting or crochet, then free, then has photo using the options on the left of the screen.

Then just keep going til you spot something you like. A lot of the best squares are intended as dishcloths, so have a look there

Simple squares are good simple squares are essential

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 13:47:45

MrsDanverclone - Did you see the Olympic yarn bombing recently? It was so utterly fabulous!

Tis lunchtime my woolly friends. Am just off for a rummage through the PMs

Here I go.........

MrsDanverclone Fri 16-Mar-12 15:15:55

I didn't unfortunately. envy
I did look at yarn bombing on the internet when I got back, to see what she was talking about, it looks fab!

Maybe a Mumsnet themed yarn bombing?

Knitted smiley faces, Greggs pasties and huge judge pants anyone??

Saw the yarn bombers on the One Show the other day and thought of all you lovely knitters.

Just looked at the photos - how fabulous.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 15:27:42

Olympic Yarn bombing is here

Love the idea of the MN version!

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 15:59:26

Beautiful woolly parcels arrived today from:

Jax [star] and thanks for including the big cards to go with the blankets- lovely idea smile thanks

HumpDeBump [star] The 'not quite square squares' are totally fine smile thanks

CakeMixture [star] all lovely. Worry not about the slight size variation - they are all fine. thanks

Nickelbabe [star] gorgeous crochet and love the fancy card smile thanks

many thanks

nickelhasababy Fri 16-Mar-12 16:35:01

yeay! so glad it's arrived grin

mine were mostly "not quite square" too, Hump grin

prettybird Fri 16-Mar-12 16:40:25

No fancy cards - just a hasty scrawl - but 5 squares went in the post today smile They can be used for either blanket, but I did use the snowflakes in WubblyBubbly's dream for inspiration to extract patterns from some of the Icelandic stuff I have been knitting recently.

I've been good and finished off all the loose ends this time blush

I think I still have enough wool for one more square, so I'll do that and send it off in time for the deadline for MrsKwazi's blanket.

I've taken some photos on my Touch so I'll see if I can get them loaded on to my profile.

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 17:32:40

Right, so who else is running to the Post office in their pyjamas tomorrow morning to get their squares posted in time? Cakey? Anyone else?! Just me and Cakey?

TimeForCake Fri 16-Mar-12 17:56:46

grin How did you guess?! Was just popping in to say that wonders will never cease & my square is finished!! The wool yarn is a beautiful Octonauts blue and the old crochet isn't too bad, amazingly. And yes, I will be dashing to the post office tomorrow. Could well be in pjs but if not, definitely with hair to rival worzel gummidge.
Please could you pm me the address Pistey? thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 18:01:31

I've just got to sew in my pesky ends and I too am ready.
Pyjamas and mad hair it is then....
Pming you now grin

TimeForCake Fri 16-Mar-12 18:18:13

Ooooohhh blimey, nearly forgot my pesky ends! Will sort them later and parcel it up. Definitely a sense of achievement completing my square and though it is not as fancy and beautiful as others, it's made with love for Mr Wubbly and Lawrie. It could look a lot worse, believe me! grin

Bet my hair is wilder than yours in the morning Pistey. The predicted rain will really help barnet matters. grin

welcome re cards, thought it was the least I could do considering my plain old square.

PurplePidjin Fri 16-Mar-12 20:08:32

Oh shit, me too with the pyjamas thing then blush

KnottyLocks Fri 16-Mar-12 20:40:59

The last posting date is Monday.

You lot can stay in your pjs til then grin

TimeForCake Fri 16-Mar-12 20:46:49

Ahhhh right. Good news, thanks Knotty. In that case, I will be able to stroll and not sprint and wear something more suitable than my jim jams. Alas, the hair is still likely to do it's own thing.

TimeForCake Fri 16-Mar-12 20:47:43

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 16-Mar-12 23:17:06

So I haven't got to run in my jim jams tomorrow?

MinnieBar Fri 16-Mar-12 23:25:45

Oh now you say Monday. I've just been burning the midnight oil (well, very nearly midnight) to get my last one done!!

KnottyLocks Sat 17-Mar-12 07:11:59

I have always said the last POSTING date is Monday.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 17-Mar-12 14:57:56

Wow! Brilliant! Well done everyone thanks

thanks mumatron

thanks muddymooncups

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Sat 17-Mar-12 21:36:09

Knotty - I am very envious of you getting to open all of the packages envy

RatherBeOnThePiste Sat 17-Mar-12 22:44:09

Chipping - you have mail thanks

Night all x

KnottyLocks Sun 18-Mar-12 07:08:47

It's Mothers' Day and for many this day will be a difficult one.

Thinking of Wendy Wubbly, David & Lawrie.

Thinking of MrsKwazii & the Kwazii family.

Thinking of our many crafters and donors for whom this day will also be very hard.

Sending much love to you all and the strength to get you through this day and beyond.

Knotty xxx

MinnieBar Sun 18-Mar-12 07:51:37

Oh Knotty you've said that so beautifully. I know it's not Mother's Day today globally (in the US and lots of other countries it's May) but what with the coach crash and the reasons behind these blankets I'm feeling very, very blessed today.
<hugs to all>

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 08:39:01

For those on here who have lost a child, or their own mum, sending love, strength and a big hug. I am thinking of you all X

PurplePidjin Sun 18-Mar-12 08:43:05

Also: EdgarAleNPie, Rindercella, BlondesHaveMoreFun, Magic8BallHasTheAnswers, CheeseAndGherkins and all the Mummies who's angels aren't here to bring them lukewarm tea in bed.

prettybird Sun 18-Mar-12 09:28:37

Knottylocks: have just calculated (by weighing the remaining wool) that I could squeeze out one more square from the remaining wool ( with possibly 3g of help from another pink wool that I have already used by accident for a couple of rows in the Icelandic "mixed pattern" square, as it is so similar). Which would you prefer - that I knit the square or that I send you the left over wool?

KnottyLocks Sun 18-Mar-12 09:41:51

Prettybird, despite the fact that your squares are simply gorgeous, I'll have the wool please. thanks

prettybird Sun 18-Mar-12 09:46:29

That's why I asked. Means I can go back and finish the Icelandic shrug I am knitting myself that I had to abandon to do the squares and was avoiding as I'd got to a difficult bit that I'd never done before - binding together two halves of knitting

...so, off to google how to continue! smile

KnottyLocks Sun 18-Mar-12 09:48:27

Ignore my PM then! Get that shrug finished before it's too warm to wear it smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 18:22:53

Evening all wine

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 18:33:58

Last minute 'pesky ends' to sew in, but I know that however organised I try to be, I will still be running to the Post Office tomorrow just before 5.30pm grin

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 18:42:15

All PMs replied to, many thanks everyone

<goes to get trainers ready for the run tomorrow>

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 19:04:10

We have news of more woolly stuff arriving courtesy of our fantastic donors thanks

thanks Kirst16

Evening all! I've just pm'd Pistey for an address. I might just make the deadline. I had such a lovely time having a crochet lesson from pidj And I could have told you how to cast off your knitting, I'm sorry we didn't pursue that line of conversation.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 18-Mar-12 21:48:39

Have replied MOSP thanks

PurplePidjin Sun 18-Mar-12 21:50:16

MOSP, I was having too much fun cooing over the SnortPigs. It's a good job Chipping didn't come, she'd have stolen them wink

Is there a pic of your MN flower on your profile?

I'll take a photo and try and upload it later smile

Itfinallyhappened Mon 19-Mar-12 08:59:39

So knitting up to the last minute here, how dare real life interfere! Can I have an address to send this parcel too, with a bit of luck there will be 2 squares by last post smile

Itfinallyhappened Mon 19-Mar-12 09:01:51

Ooh I've name changed by the way, it's me of the bizarre pregnancy/knitting dreams on the first thread

AmyGurumi Mon 19-Mar-12 09:29:32

Aaaargh! So sorry but have missed the deadline, is posting today ok please? Sorry if I hold things up. I'll pm Pistey for the address.

I had almost finished my squares but was about 10 inches short of wool and had been waiting for some to arrive - it's just one edge of crochet to make it 6 inches <sob> I'll see what else I can do and send.

Off to read the thread now, am very behind.

KnottyLocks Mon 19-Mar-12 09:37:26

ItFinallyhappened - you have a PM. smile

Amy, it's the last posting day today so you haven't missed the deadline at all. You have a PM smile

TimeForCake Mon 19-Mar-12 09:39:36

Today is the last posting date, so you're fine Amygurumi.

Pesky ends sewn in, square parcelled up and all ready to go. Wonders will never cease!
Even the sun is shining for walking down to the post office.
Now to get on with Mrs K's ...

AmyGurumi Mon 19-Mar-12 09:45:14

Hey, that's brilliant smile Thanks Knotty and TFC.

I'm still on my MN Lent embargo, so feel really out of it around here. Pistey kindly says blanket threads don't count so I'm allowed to read these grin Am looking forward to seeing everyone's squares.

RatherBeKnownAsPitsey Mon 19-Mar-12 13:49:46

Lunchtime, yippeeee!!

Am so hungry!!!

The PM red light is on, I must away to my inbox box. Was very nearly at 900 PMs this morning, I wonder if we are there yet, and who it will be?!!!

RatherBeKnownAsPitsey Mon 19-Mar-12 14:46:45

Just limbering up, doing a few stretches, getting ready for my sprint to the Post Office later..........

MinnieBar Mon 19-Mar-12 15:38:06

Back from Post Office! Pesky Ends sewn in! Hurrah!

prettybird Mon 19-Mar-12 16:12:03

Posted my last two squares smile. Kept the few grammes of wool leftover, as I can use them to do features when if there is need for another one.

RatherBeKnownAsPitsey Mon 19-Mar-12 16:48:58

Just putting on my trainers........

TimeForCake Mon 19-Mar-12 17:02:28

Go Pitsey go - clock's ticking! Just got back from posting mine. I even bought the envelope for the next one too. <organised>
Sounds silly, but I always feel a bit attached to my square when wrapping it up and posting it. Don't get me wrong, I curse it a lot when making it because I go wrong all the time, but when it's done, I always want to wish it well on it's journey towards the final beautiful blanket. Oh dear, now I sound a bit bonkers...

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 19-Mar-12 17:04:58

Does anyone know the address for posting?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 19-Mar-12 17:05:31

angelpantser Tue 20-Mar-12 09:26:59

Thank you for your kind words, ladies.

I'm always in awe of the elaborate grannies and the colour changing squares. Hard enough to deal with one set of pesky ends, never mind lots. That said I'm doing a ripple blanket and so far have eleventy million ends to sew in and I'm only a third of the way through. (I counted them after wine grin)

<lurking hopefully that my woolly parcel arrives soon - was posted on Sat...>

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Mar-12 15:41:29

I've got 11 parcels here. I'm just opening them all. Back soon.

I will send my parcel off tomorrow, Knotty. I presume it's the same address as the last lot I sent you? [dim]

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Mar-12 16:14:05

prettybird Tue 20-Mar-12 16:39:27

We could have done some knitting together STDG smile I probably knitted my squares on the 4mm needles you lent me, which I need to get back to you blush

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Mar-12 16:51:06

How exciting! Loads of woolly squares grin
Don't drink the rum all at once Knots <arf>

MinnieBar Tue 20-Mar-12 17:05:38

Oh phew, glad they got there safe.

I know none of us wanted to have to make another of these blankets, IYSWIM, and would much rather there wasn't the need, but I will really miss being part of this when it's all over. The sense of community and cooperation is really astounding and it's been a privilege to be a small part of it all.

KnottyLocks Tue 20-Mar-12 17:57:12

<hugs Minnie>.

All about humanity. smile

TimeForCake Tue 20-Mar-12 18:01:55

Hear hear Minnie. It's a lovely spirit that's created isn't it and I will miss it too. The families are often in my thoughts. I do wish there wasn't the need, of course, but if these projects provide the tiniest bit of comfort then we've achieved what we set out to do.

Knotty will need to keep limbering up the old fingers though, bless her.

TimeForCake Tue 20-Mar-12 18:03:07

Ps Glad my square arrived too!

Don't worry about the needles, Prettybird - I have plenty of spares. Maybe we could meet up sometime for coffee and knitting, otherwise, just hang onto them. smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 20-Mar-12 21:18:41

<panics that it was me that didn't put on enough postage> I just slapped on 2 2nd class stamps which is more than enough for a second class large letter, but 3p under a first class large letter... I've been lucky before and had excess charges waived. I recommend putting on your best outfit and biggest smile knotty smile

Ooooh - you're a meanie...

Glad they got there.

Got 3 more lurking here and should get more done before I post at the weekend too! Whoop whoop smile

NoMore, there are still squares coming in so I won't be doing anything with them until the weekend, other than keeping them safe smile

AnnieBody Thu 22-Mar-12 13:52:40

Knotty, I bet that under postage one is me blush
I posted it last Thursday and made an uneducated guess about the postage.
So so sorry to cause you hassle, let me know if its me and how I can pay the difference.

MumToTiny Thu 22-Mar-12 13:57:59

Just posted my three squares (more like rectangles, but can be stretched into squares blush)... Knotty, I don't think I'm going to be very popular - pesky ends are still hanging loose blushblushblushblushblush sorry!

I've marked them to be used for either blanket - hope that's ok with my donor (sent me a lovely ball of Debbie Bliss in a mossy green colour, postcode starts with AL).

I've enjoyed making my little contribution to the woolly hugs - hopefully the last ones needed for a while.

Good luck with the hooking Knotty!

RatherBeOnThePiste Thu 22-Mar-12 15:02:29

Morning all! Just stopping by to say hello as the thread has dropped off my active convos list. smile

Just checking in to see how the blanket is coming along.

(Ahem - how big is it going to be - you seem to have 100s of squares grin)

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 30-Mar-12 18:22:28

Poor Knotty's internet is misbehaving so it falls to me to announce today's woolly treasures....

Woolly parcel arriving today from:

Faverolles [star] Your beautiful pinky squares have arrived safely smile thanks

Exit - both blankets have certainly had the most fantastic response, just brilliant, and there are still squares coming in. Supply problems have delayed some crafters, but I think everyone now has woolly wool <phew>
<tempting fate>
<waits to be inundated with missing wool ishoos>

As soon as Knots is confident she has the majority of the squares she will begin hooking grin Hopefully this won't be too far off now!

RatherBeOnThePiste Fri 30-Mar-12 18:38:23

The size of the Isle of Wight Exit grin

Not really grin

There certainly has been the most touching and fantastic response to these two blankets but you know i think it may seem like there are squillions more squares than actually there are... Once Knots has sorted her internet she will I am sure have a say on this, but because we knew some crafters were making for both, she has posted arrivals on both threads.

I don't know if I'm making any sense grin

There certainly will be plenty of squares for both blankets, and they will be glorious. That I do know smile

Nothing useful to add. Just missing this thread since I have had wool, hooked wool and sent squares already. Just twiddling my crochet hook in anticipation of new project (hopefully life is being kind to us all and no-one needs MN blanket for a while iykwim blush). I have a new amigurumi book that is tempting me. One small Easter bunny completed already. Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy very small safety eyes btw?
