KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 15:46:29

We have just heard the tragic and devastating news that MrsKwazii's daughter has passed away today in an accident. She was 4 sad

We would like to make a blanket for MrsKwazii's family, to offer them what comfort we can.
If you would like to contribute in any way, please sign up below and PM RatherbeOnThePiste with your offer: crafting, donating, need wool, don't need wool, etc. She'll match you up.

We need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

* Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

* or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

* 4mm knitting needles or hooks

* cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

* 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, greens, silver/ greys and pinks.

JulesJules Sun 26-Feb-12 15:54:38

And me. Will knit, have got wool.

GreenEyesAndHam Sun 26-Feb-12 15:55:47

I can't knit but I'm happy to donate in any way.

Awful awful news, my heart goes out to her

messymammy Sun 26-Feb-12 15:58:44

Oh God how awful another blanket is needed again so soon. My thoughts are with the poor family. sad
Like Dingle, I'm waiting on wool for Wubbly'y blanket but can easily knit up some more squares if there is more wool donated.

NessaRose Sun 26-Feb-12 16:00:10

So very sorry to hear such awful news, as messy says, so soon after Wubbly. sad

messymammy Sun 26-Feb-12 16:03:33

Have PMed Pistey again

PurplePidjin Sun 26-Feb-12 16:04:33

I'm here, will make squares for wherever they're needed sad

bigbuttons Sun 26-Feb-12 16:04:57

have pm'd, I can knit, happy to do as many squares as you might need.

DollyTwat Sun 26-Feb-12 16:05:18

I can't knit either so I'll donate
Let me know what I have to do

nannynick Sun 26-Feb-12 16:06:26

How do we go about donating wool? Not sure where to get any near me... can I donate financially to a local crafter so they can use the money to buy suitable wool (or use some of their existing supply)?

hoops997 Sun 26-Feb-12 16:07:11

has anyone got a picture of a square they have knitted, as well as donating I'd like to try and knit a few squares too

Rudawakening Sun 26-Feb-12 16:10:24

I've sent you a PM pistey.

My heart goes out to MrsKwazii and her family.

smartiesrule Sun 26-Feb-12 16:10:49

Once we've knit squares where do we send them? Help, I'm new to this...

hoops997 Sun 26-Feb-12 16:10:51

nanny I've just been on eBay and there is lots of that wool on there, I have just got 3 balls of pale pink for £10.50.

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 16:12:23

Some photos of previous MN blankets can be found here

For donors: Pistey's PM will explain your options.
Some people like to buy the wool and send it to the crafter we match you to.
Others prefer to send us money to buy the wool for you.

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 16:13:45

Smarties, when you are ready to send your square/s to us, PM Pistey and she'll PM you the details and the address.

Kayzr Sun 26-Feb-12 16:16:36

I have just ordered some wool. I will post some on when it arrives.

MinnieBar Sun 26-Feb-12 16:17:08

SarahStratton if you're still sending me wool directly (I put on FB that I was happy to knit for Wubbly) then Knotty has said to send all our completed squares in together and then stipulate if they are for Wubbly/MrsKwazii/to be split between the blankets - if you're happy with this, then I could say all the ones I manage to make out of what you send/have sent (should be three squares for one ball I think) could go to either. I'm happy to knit for both.

sad

sodapops Sun 26-Feb-12 16:17:11

I'm in. sad

I'll knit some more squares. I've PMed Pistey.

TheRealMBJ Sun 26-Feb-12 16:23:41

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere Sun 26-Feb-12 16:24:05

I would like to try and knit some squares. I havent picked up my needles much since DD but I would like to try again.
I have just bought some duck egg blue for 3.25 on ebay. Lots on there.

If it turns out I am totally rubbish I will post the balls of wool to someone else.

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 16:27:31

MrsDV,

if you get stuck, you can post it to me and I'll do your squares.
However, I think you'll be absolutely fine.

OSLioness Sun 26-Feb-12 16:28:17

I will do some squares. I'm happy to knit using donated wool or buy some of my own. Or both! Let me know what I can do to help.

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 16:29:35

If you haven't done already, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste and let her know what you are offering to do

Many thanks.

I am so sad for their loss. Its just awful isnt it. Just so terrible.

Thank you Knotty. May take a week or so.

smartiesrule Sun 26-Feb-12 16:36:10

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 16:39:25

Have PMed Piste. I'd like to start knitting.

Methe Sun 26-Feb-12 16:46:56

This has been on my mind all afternoon sad I'll crochet a couple of square. It'll be ripple as that's all I can do and I am a very beginner so they won't be perfect.

I'll watch out for colours and wool:

TimeForCake Sun 26-Feb-12 16:50:27

I don't know what to say sad. I will pm Pistey and do my very best to crochet a square. I am very slow and not very good at knowing what I am doing, but I shall do my utmost to do a square for both blankets. Hoping my wool arrives tomorrow so I can start over and over again.

Loganberry Sun 26-Feb-12 16:52:27

Have pm'd you Pistey, would like to knit for this one too.

trumpton Sun 26-Feb-12 16:59:37

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 26-Feb-12 17:01:38

Thank you everyone - such amazing support, I am humbled, truly.

I am steadily working my way through the PMs.
Then I will go back through the first thread and make sure no one gets left behind.

Thank you to everyone X

thanks

aJumpedUpPantryBoy Sun 26-Feb-12 17:10:59

I've just PMd Piste - I can crochet some squares .

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 17:11:23

Apologies to the crafters who have heard this before.

ALL squares are highly valued: plain, patterned, fancy, simple, made by experts, made by novices.

The first square I made for the blankets was a simple garter stitch one. As was Pistey's. They honestly look gorgeous and work brilliantly alongside the fancier ones. They show each other off. The blankets really wouldn't look half as effective if they were all fancy.

These project are always about people's efforts and the genuine good and lovely intention to try to bring comfort to others.

Thank you.

LewisFan Sun 26-Feb-12 17:12:29

just pm'd too - I'll crochet some squares from a donor, but can't afford to buy wool I'm afraid

I'll happily donate financially for wool. What's the best way?

DirtyMartini Sun 26-Feb-12 17:24:18

Just pm'd you, Piste. Thank you, all you organising people, you're remarkable. If only it wasn't needed.

LewisFan Sun 26-Feb-12 17:25:18

Amazingdisgrace, you can buy the wool online at cucumberpatch.co.uk and they'll send it to your donor when Pistey matches you with someone - that's probably the simplest way

PippiL Sun 26-Feb-12 17:33:32

Thanks Knotty that is useful info us newbies.

If there are any newer knitters who need a confidence boost, or want to remember how to do different patterns etc try ravelry

Pastabee Sun 26-Feb-12 17:48:05

What terrible news. pisty and knotty I am working on squares for Wubbly's blanket and will order some more wool to make extra for this blanket.

chipmonkey Sun 26-Feb-12 20:16:22

I will knit a couple of squares for both blankets. So very, very sorry to hear this awful news. If anyone is in touch with Mrs K, please tell her she is welcome on the bereaved mums thread when she feels ready.

travellingwilbury Sun 26-Feb-12 20:17:16

This is so sad , I can't do anything crafty and as much as I would like to try I think it is best if I send money instead .

maxmissie Sun 26-Feb-12 20:18:42

Have pm'd pistey just now to offer a ball of wool.

Molehillmountain Sun 26-Feb-12 20:27:35

I think I've sent a pm! I can knit and provided own wool. I may be able to do more but will commit to do a balls worth. How many squares is that?

roguepixie Sun 26-Feb-12 20:30:56

Have PM'd you Pistey.

Am doing squares for Mrs Wubbly and will knit some for Mrs Kwazii as well.

Have own wool so no need to link me up with a donor.

This is so sad. sad

Not sure if anyone has said this already but for those donating wool. I used Cucumber Patch it was easy to find the right wool and they delivered direct to my knitter who received it next day.

Pistey and Knotty thanks

MrsK if you do read this can I echo Chip - we will be there if you need any support on the bereaved mums thread here

mumatron Sun 26-Feb-12 20:36:07

Have PM'd you too RatherBeOnThePiste.
What a sad news sad

KnottyLocks Sun 26-Feb-12 20:51:08

Molehill, most knitters get 2 to 3 squares from 1 ball of wool.

We ask that you send any leftover wool with the finished squares. We use this for either hooking the blanket together or adding embellishments or making more squares.

thanks to all that have offered to help in anyway.
As always, it is very touching.

bluebump Sun 26-Feb-12 20:53:08

I am happy to crochet some squares and can try and buy wool or use donated, whatever works best. Will PM you Piste. Such sad news sad

coffeeisking Sun 26-Feb-12 21:12:35

Hello, I would really love to help by donating some wool, but wont be able to get some until next weekend, would this be of any help?

If not is there something/anything i can do until then?

Feel so much for MrsKwazii. sad

Pleiades45 Sun 26-Feb-12 21:19:46

I can knit, if you find me a donor.

PoohBearsHole Sun 26-Feb-12 21:22:13

I saw this and it has really hit me. Same age dd sad.
I last knitted for dd when she was born but I would really like to knit something if I can, I am a very simplistic knitter smile but I could probably knock something up pretty quick.

If I am making for MrsKwazi am happy to add to Wubbly's blanket too if I can. So do I PM Pistey?

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 26-Feb-12 21:32:31

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 06:52:58

Thanks so much for all this Pisty. You one hell of an organiser.

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 07:06:44

As MrsK has many good friends on twitter who are also contributing, I would just like to make sure that they are included in this.

I am in contact with them and am matching crafters with donors but we have a few more twitter donors than crafters.

Is there something specific that the twitterers can add? Something different perhaps?

SoupDragon Mon 27-Feb-12 07:11:13

Can you simply match a twitter donor with a MN crafter if you liaise with Pistey?

Rudawakening Mon 27-Feb-12 07:22:27

RealMBJ I'm sure most knitters won't mind having 2 or more donors I've volunteered myself for this to listen if needed as I'm currently not very busy in RL so can knit a lot.

As Soup said pm pistes I'm sure something can be worked out.

Rudawakening Mon 27-Feb-12 07:23:14

Pistey not listen or pistes. Damn phone!

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 07:24:12

RedRosie Mon 27-Feb-12 08:12:45

Have PMed (I think - was my first ever PM) RatherbeOnThePiste to offer knitting. Am a beginner knitter so it won't be a thing of beauty.

PlasticFlamingo Mon 27-Feb-12 08:16:55

This is so sad,

Piste I have PMed you.

Praying for Mrs Kwazii and Wubbly's famillies.

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 08:58:01

Effort and consideration? Important. Skill? Not so much thanks

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 09:06:58

So sad. I haven't been able to stop thinking about MrsKwazii and her family since I saw her tweet yesterday. sad

I've ordered some wool to donate to the knitter I've been matched with. And am also wondering whether I can relearn to knit in time to knit a square myself. Can anyone recommend any teach-yourself websites etc.? I used to be able to knit quite well many decades years ago, but am not sure I can even remember how to cast on now. blush

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 09:12:51

Linzer, have a look on YouTube. There are some great, easy to follow tutorials on there.

It's like riding a bicycle: it'll all come floading back to you. smile

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 09:17:35

Thanks, Knotty - I'm keeping my fingers crossed (albeit perhaps not while I'm actually knitting) that it will. grin

NinthWave Mon 27-Feb-12 09:25:24

I've PMed RatherBeOnThePiste as I would like to donate some money for wool. I'm so, so sorry to see this, I have a 4yo DS and all I want to do is run into school and scoop him up.

2andout Mon 27-Feb-12 09:31:05

Such awful sad news. I would love to donate some wool. xxx

tribpot Mon 27-Feb-12 09:52:40

Linzer, you can also have a look at the Dummies website - that isn't meant to be offensive of course! It's what I use when I get stuck as I find the illustrations very easy to understand.

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 10:29:09

Hello. I'm not a Mumsnetter (well, I am now, because I just registered so I could post on this thread), I know MrsKwazii from Twitter. I think I probably know some of you, but I have no idea who anyone is on here. I am a very, very novice knitter but I would like to have a go at a square or two for Mrs K's blanket.

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 10:32:56

Hi Purple wink

PM RatherBeOnThePiste by clicking on 'Message Poster' next to one of her posts. She will put you on her spreadsheet and hook you up with a donor if you need one.

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 10:39:36

Hello. wink

Done!

Thanks. smile

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 10:43:29

No offence taken, tribpot. grin That site looks really useful - thanks.

Not sure whether I know you on Twitter, Purple, but hello. smile

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Mon 27-Feb-12 11:28:25

As this blanket is slightly different to our usual projects in that there are contributers from both MN and Twitter, I've had a little think about how we can recognise this as a joint project.
We are going to add some Twitter bird crochet embellishments to the blanket. TheRealMBJ and I will make these, and I'll stitch them onto the blanket as I put it together.

I'm working on a last posting date for squares at the moment. I'll let you know what that is as soon as I've worked it out.

thanks

yankeedoodledo Mon 27-Feb-12 12:42:19

am a MNetter but not much on here anymore (was known as Momino), I know MrsK more from Twitter. I desperately want to do something: can't knit. do you need monetary donations? I will message Piste in a moment.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 12:44:09

Thanks, Yankee. We'll sort out that for you. Just PM Piste. smile

nickelhasababy Mon 27-Feb-12 12:45:40

sad

I would like to help again - i was sent 2 balls for the other blanket, so can use some of it for this? (i've got a dark greenyblue and a cream)

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 12:46:50

Sadly, I'd need more of an international (specifically Austrian) meet-up Pidjin - but thank you. grin I suspect I am too far away for anyone to help me!

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 12:59:32

Maybe ask on the relevant board, Linzer? There might be an English speaking knitter in Austria, stranger things have happened. Donations have come in from New Zealand, Thailand, Canada and others before... thanks

amyGarumi Mon 27-Feb-12 13:01:43

How very sad, poor MrsKwazii and her family.

I'd like to knit and will pm Pisty, if I could be matched with a donor please.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 13:04:55

Nickel, if you are already helping out with the other blanket, when you send your squares to us, put a note with them saying you'd like them split over the two. smile

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 13:06:56

Thanks for the welcomes. smile

I think the Twitter birds to show it's a joint project is a great idea.

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 13:12:44

I'm the only Austrian who posts regularly on the Germany/Austria thread Pidjin - but I'm sure I'll get by with YouTube, the Dummies website and the knowledge that I once used to know how to do it even if it was decades ago. grin

Yes, the Twitter birds are a great idea.

Blatherskite Mon 27-Feb-12 13:31:16

I really like the Twitter birds idea.

tribpot Mon 27-Feb-12 13:32:48

Love the Twitter birds idea, esp as the MN logo would be a beatch to put on!

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 13:34:05

Update from MrsK

The family will be happy to accept a blanket in memory of their DD.

Al0uise Mon 27-Feb-12 14:08:22

Oh that's good, I love the Twitter birds idea too.

TheRealMBJ Mon 27-Feb-12 14:20:22

She wanted me to pass on their thanks for the way in which people have rallied around them. People they have never met.
Her DD apparently loved the Care Bears and their tummy badges if anyone is skilled enough to incorporate one into their square.

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 14:30:28

MBJ, any in particular? I'll make a toy one if that would be appropriate?

messymammy Mon 27-Feb-12 14:32:28

Oh mbj I'm so glad MrsK is getting some comfort at this truly terrible time for her.
Ok, care bears, lovely. What shapes are there on them? Heart, shamrock, rainbow, what else?

GentleOtter Mon 27-Feb-12 14:36:17
RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 14:46:36

Lunchtime then brew Definitely not wine

Thank you so much everyone and welcome to our twitter friends. I am just going to start working through all PMs I have received this morning, many thanks to everyone. Bear with me though, tis a fair few!

thanks

tribpot Mon 27-Feb-12 14:47:09

Lots of lovely heart ideas on Rav - this is nice. Shamrock and clover and sun.

chipmonkey Mon 27-Feb-12 14:49:06

I will try to do a care bear <<brave>>

How sad. Have just seen this.

Will do some squares. Already doing some for the first blanket so will do some more.

Primrose123 Mon 27-Feb-12 14:56:18

Very sad. I will knit some squares. Could I be matched up with someone who wants to donate wool?

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 15:28:43

Primrose, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste just up there ^

Thanks.

2andout Mon 27-Feb-12 15:39:42

Have just ordered wool to be sent to a knitter. Thanks Pistey for organising, is such a lovely and personal way for us to show we care. X

Have just ordered some wool, and will be sending it on as soon as arrives. I love the idea of the twitter birds and the care bears.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 16:10:35

Another amazing response, everyone is absolutely fabulous. thanks
I have replied to all PMs now. Primrose123 - Hold on right there, I am coming to get you smile

Thank you CiderwithBuda.

Thank you to all our lovely donors for their speed and organisation. We couldn't do this without you thanks

Welcome to our new Mumsnetters who have joined just for this. <passes wine> We are very glad to have you here.

Linzer - glad to see you may be giving knitting a whirl grin

Go Chipmonkey!!

its terrible that this is the second blanket needed in a week.
I can`t knit or crochet but if there is anything i can do please pm me * pistey*

Kayzr Mon 27-Feb-12 16:17:25

How on earth do you do those patterns?? confused

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 16:18:43

<pours gin for Pistey>

Squares only on this blanket btw thanks

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 16:20:17

Kayzr, get yourself to www.ravelry.com and lose a few days find something you like!

Quick thicko question: I am just ordering some wool to be sent to a knitter - is it better to send 2 balls the same colour or can they be different colours??

BerryLellow Mon 27-Feb-12 16:36:06

Have pmed you Pistey, about donating.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 16:40:26

Hello lovely Whatevertheweather smile You know, one ball is absolutely fine x
[Not at all thicko emoticon]

thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 16:41:03

<accepts gin readily from Pidj>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 16:41:22

grin

Have ordered two via cucumberpatch - hopefully the lovely knitter will receive in the next few days smile

Happy for it to be used for either blanket if there is spare not admitting that I have no clue how many squares one ball would make....one ball per square?!

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 16:47:21

2-3 squares per ball, two colours could be fun -stripes maybe?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 16:48:00

Whatevertheweather - these lovelies get about 2 or 3 squares from a ball.
I only get about one, because I have to keep restarting

grin

Thank you so much x

Dingle Mon 27-Feb-12 16:53:02

I am more than happy to try out an emblem type pattern, make it up as I go along if needed, but it may really depend on what colour wool is being sent to me. I started knitting up a sample square last night with a moss stitch heart in the middle but I will have to alter the frame of the square to make it the correct size.

Eager for Mr Postie to arrive but now I need to cover at work all day again tomorrow! hmm Will have to leave a pleading note on my door and hope they will deliver to a neighbour.

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 17:10:53

This is a really thick question. If you need to cast on 33 stitches, does that mean you need to knit 33 rows to make the square? Or, to put it another way, how many rows do you need to knit to make it a square? smile

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 17:14:07

Squid, don't count the rows, just knit until it reaches 6". Much easier. smile

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 17:18:36

Yes, that does sound more sensible! Thanks!

RedRosie Mon 27-Feb-12 17:20:46

That would depend on your tension (says beginner knitter getting above herself) I think we are aiming for 6 inches square so just keep measuring.

PurpleSquid Here's another way of doing a square if you are comfortable with knitting twice into a stitch - it makes nice square squares of exact dimensions - though it's harder to knit motifs - it's fine for texture and stripes. I got this from somewhere on the internet, but can't for the life of me remember where...

Knit a Square corner to corner
Cast on one stitch.
Knit into the front, the back and then the front again, giving you three stitches.
Knit into the front and back of the first stitch in each row, so that each row is one stitch more than the last. Keep doing this until the sides of the resulting triangle are six inches
Then, knit the first two stitches of each row together, so each row is one stitch less than the last, until you have three stitches left.
Knit the last three stitches together then cast off.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 17:22:35

Update

Last date for posting squares: Monday 26th March

That should give everyone time to get their wool and create their lovely squares.

You can obviously send them earlier if you wish.

thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 17:35:20

Yes, and PM me for the address when you are ready for posting thanks

<looks at own knitting which is still only nearly one inch>

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 17:40:36

Gleaming Heels :Eyes glaze over: I think that might be too tricky for me. I am very very very much a novice!

Red Rosie Does that count for width too?

Eek. I'm getting nervous now.

Dingle Mon 27-Feb-12 17:40:47

But look at the time you have spent organising for everyone else Pistey! thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 17:45:11

Bless you Dingle, but even if I hadn't, I'd still only be on nearly one inch!

Not known for speedy knitting me <arf>

RedRosie Mon 27-Feb-12 17:49:47

I think so PurpleSquid - 33 stitches is a guide for the likes of us. Do a couple of rows and measure the width. That's my plan - if it's way too wide you can start again.

Fair enough PurpleSquid, I certainly don't want to frighten you off -I only posted because it removes all the worries about 'tension' and particularly whether the width will come out right - because I am useless at the width/tension bit (length can just be measured as everyone said upthread), but I bet Pistey and all the other organisers are absolutely used to lovely novice knitters - good on you for getting involved, don't be nervous - just go for it

Molehillmountain Mon 27-Feb-12 19:01:22

Got wool! Sorry to ask silly questions, but will any stitch do for the plain ish squares? If so thought I might make my stitch book earn its keep after I rashly purchased it several dc ago blush

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 19:02:29

Mole, any stitch you like smile

Molehillmountain Mon 27-Feb-12 19:23:53

Great! smile

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 19:24:56

I'm getting nervous now too. Have unpacked my knitting needles, which is a start. Now I just need to order some wool, for myself this time. In the meantime, I shall practise on DD1's school wool. I tried casting on earlier, just to see if I could remember how to. I couldn't. blush

Kayzr Mon 27-Feb-12 19:27:28

A bit off topic maybe, but does anyone have a link or something to explain really really simply how to change colour or to add a new ball on?

Pretty please smile

Molehillmountain Mon 27-Feb-12 19:49:16

Linzer-have you got a wool shop nearby? I bet they'd happily show you or even cast on two or three squares for you wink. Casting on isn't the easiest bit to start with-but you have to have stitches on the needle to make any progress. I don't think I cast on for ages when I was learning several blush years ago.

Molehillmountain Mon 27-Feb-12 19:52:28

Kayzr - not sure of this is correct but this is how I join wool. Knit to the end of a row, take the end you've just knitted with and the new bit of wool and knot them together (think you're maybe not supposed to knot but I always dowink). Knit on! Hth-or that someone will post tutting at my ineptitude and set you straight!

PippiL Mon 27-Feb-12 19:56:03

Joining wool...yes I just do the first half of a knot, so it doesn't stick out at the side too much. Then when are are finished you can just use a tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends into your knitting.

PurpleSquid Mon 27-Feb-12 20:05:33

Sorry, GleamingHeels - hope I didn't sound ungrateful. I meant to say thank you for the advice but realised I didn't. I can see how that method would give you an accurate square, but I don't know how to knit twice into a stitch. confused

I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm working on the 'how hard can it be to knit a plain square?!' logic. smile

LinzerTorte - last time I knitted anything I had to consult YouTube to refresh my memory about how to cast on, and I expect I will this time too! There were lots of really helpful, simple little videos too. And they really do need to be simple for me!

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 20:10:22

Evening folks smile

Just to help any nervous knitters, the edges of the squares will be totally covered by a crochet seam. So any knotty bits, lumpy edges etc won't matter.

LinzerTorte Mon 27-Feb-12 20:36:35

Molehill There are a couple of sewing shops here, which also sell wool and no doubt knitting needles too, but apart from the fact that I find the sales assistants there a little intimidating sometimes, my German knitting terminology is non-existent. So I shall see how I get on with YouTube etc. first (which I hadn't consulted before I tried to cast on).

Squid Simple is good! The Dummies website only showed something called the two-strand method for casting on, which I'm sure wasn't what I used to use, so I'll have to investigate YouTube. smile

RedRosie Mon 27-Feb-12 20:37:10

"Knotty bits, lumpy edges etc won't matter."

Hurrah - I may hold you to that KnottyLocks. I only started knitting on 10 January ...

tribpot Mon 27-Feb-12 20:38:27

Video for one of the easiest cast ons - the cable cast-on. Very easy to follow.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 20:39:18

RedRosie, you may smile

And good on you with your knitting. You [star]

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 20:47:35

Have just replied to all this evening's PMs, thank you everyone thanks

Come on LinzerTorte - you can do this! YouTube is your friend grin

I do what has been said for adding in a new colour, it works, I 'm not sure if it is right or not. Then you have to sort of wind it up the sides as you go if you do stripes like me which makes the edge on one side look a bit unusual, but as Knotty says it all disappears into the seam. I'll go and find the link to the photo album and maybe you will see what the joins look like?!

Hang on.....

<bustles off>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 20:50:43

Photos are here and as you will see, I've written

There's nowt wrong with wonky
I wrote that 3 months ago, so it must be true!

grin

Molehillmountain Mon 27-Feb-12 20:57:50

Ooh-knitting instruction in German! I second the you tube suggestion, Linzer smile

AllTheSevens Mon 27-Feb-12 21:05:53

So sorry to hear this sad news. Thinking of MrsK and Wubbly's family too. sad

I would love to knit some squares for the blankets- I might be able to get my own wool. Would a plain stitch but stripey design be okay? And I can also do a diamondy pattern if that's any good?

I'm no expert though so may not be perfect!

Tried to message Piste but it wouldn't let me confused

Pancakeflipper Mon 27-Feb-12 21:11:37

If there are any donations going free - I can knit some squares. Cannot do fancy stuff but thankfully there's an entire gang of you who are good at that.

I cannot PM Piste either.....Are you full up ?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 21:12:13

shock

Am I full up? Can one be full up?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 21:13:35

shock Knotty we HAVE to get folders sorted!!! Really now!

I'm coming for you then, All and Pancake, hang on

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 21:16:33

Arse... I shall have to go and start emptying out my PM box! I didn't know one could be full shock

Pancakeflipper Mon 27-Feb-12 21:19:17

It let me send you a message this time. Sent you my address Piste - lots of luck with your s/sheets!

AllTheSevens Mon 27-Feb-12 21:29:29

Yes, I've managed toPM now as well.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 21:33:48

grin

Weird though and slightly worrying. I didn't know you could get to capacity, if that is what that was? Blimey.

Knotty has been asking MNHQ to sort out the PM system for what feels like ages. I appreciate maybe we use it way more than it was originally intended for but on a project like this what we really would like is a search facility for PMs and a folders type storage method. At the moment PMs just pile up chronologically and are so unmanageable. I am always so worried about missing something or losing something. Over the first Wednesday I had 98 PMs. If people are so lovely to volunteer you don't want to lose them or miss them. How sad would that be?

<troubled>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 21:35:12

I'm going to start at the bottom and delete masses. I will keep all blanket PMs though and hopefully we can get this sorted. Knotty we really need to sort this.

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 21:35:45

Blimey, I've never deleted a pm on here. Thought mailbox capacity was pretty close to unlimited!

I shall ask MNHQ smile

funchum8am Mon 27-Feb-12 21:40:48

Hi can I join in? tribpot has sent me the link on another knitting thread. I am a relative beginner but think I can knit you some squares. I will buy my own wool. PMing you now ratherbeonthepiste.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 21:53:44

MNHQ,

we need your help! And quickly!

Pistey and I are getting squillions of PMs every day.

What's the capacity for our inboxes?

Obviously we don't want to delete PMs with blanket info on but can't stick them in folders either.

Pistey is having to delete some in order to receive some.

And, it appears some of her first PMs from the start of the blanket projects have disappeared.

I'm off to check mine.

PurplePidjin Mon 27-Feb-12 21:54:49
OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 27-Feb-12 22:00:41

Crikey
That's not good
I will check with tech about capcaity for inboxes (no one ever pms me sad)
And see how we can help.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:06:41

I've just sorted that for you, Olivia. wink

Now, all you have to do is sort our side out smile

thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:09:03

Please - these are my concerns

Can you reach capacity on PMs? Do they fall off the other end if you reach capacity or do you stop being able to accept any?

I'm deleting old ones like mad! But I am so worried I have missed people, they think they have PMd me and in fact it hasn't come through. As I delete I seem to be getting lots arriving. Coincidence? I don't know.

PLease we need folders! We need to be able to sort and file and free up the inbox

We really need to be able to search. It is impossible to use the system as it is.

I appreciate maybe we use it way more than it was originally intended for on a project like this

We are trying so hard here!!
Please help us!!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:10:24

PMd you as well Olivia - now you have two in your inbox! grin

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:13:18

Olivia, for pity's sake don't reply via PM!

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:13:54

I'm deleting as quickly as poss here

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:14:21

grin
Are you still deleting Knots? I am, but will get to a point where I don't want to lose PMs.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:14:39

<arf> X post

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:15:02

Even deleting is difficult MNHQ!!!

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:19:51

Yes it bloody well is. It takes AGES

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:23:18

I'm worried that I lost someone now sad

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:23:21

Hang about...

Is there a maximum number of PMs we can send?

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:24:26

literally just thought that - it will be both boxes..arse.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:25:53

<shares rum with Knots>

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:26:14

Knotty - we don't actually know for sure this is the problem you know

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:28:17

No we don't. I think rum may the the answer though.

I'm frightened to check my sent box.

LynnCSchreiber Mon 27-Feb-12 22:30:46

Ratherbe
I won't PM you and add to your inbox, but wanted to say that I received your PM and will sort out some wool this week.

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:32:38

Lovely MMeL, thank you.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:34:25

Thank you so much MMeL - you are fabulous x

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:34:51

Rum is the answer wine cheers

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:35:38

Olivia, we're downing tools for the evening.

Please let us know when you know. thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:38:21

Knotty - I'm not going to do any more until we hear. It may be coincidence. We just don't know. <swigs rum>

I have emptied loads and loads of PMs now, so if it was a capacity problem, it should be all OK again now! I have PMs that have arrived since, so it looks like it is working at the mo.

If anyone can't get through, post on here and I will come and look for you.
We won't lose anyone smile

I won't add to the problems but would like to offer to make a square. I have never crocheted in my life but am about to start and have been advised my experience isn't a problem. Don't have wool and may need a little advice so if I can help just give me a shout grin

KnottyLocks Mon 27-Feb-12 22:42:08

Oh we can do advice. We'll talk you through it. No problem. smile

Have a look on YouTube at crochet tutorials.

I really must go to bed, but will be back first thing.

FreudianSlipper Mon 27-Feb-12 22:45:04

i have pm'd RBOTP

i would like to donate some wool

terribly sad news sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 22:56:45

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans - I have sent you a PM
and FreudianSlipper - just doing you now thanks

ChippingInNeedsCoffee Mon 27-Feb-12 23:13:37

LovesBeing - glad you joined us smile

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 23:20:41

thanks Thank you to OliviaMumsnet for joining with us and supporting our blanket projects, much appreciated.

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 27-Feb-12 23:31:05

Have replied to all PMs from this evening, heartfelt thanks to everyone, what an overwhelming amount of support for the blanket projects.

Thanks to the speed and generosity of our fabulous donors, lots of wool is already with crafters, and lots will be arriving this week.We already have wool lined up to hook the blanket together with. Marvellous. The donors have done so well. We genuinely couldn't do this without them thanks

<yawn>
Bed time.
Night all x

messymammy Tue 28-Feb-12 00:01:16

Pistey, tried to pm you but now see there is a problem. Just to say I got your pm and you are a star for doing all this organising <brownnose>
you too knotty btw smile

Chipping - thanks for the encouragement grin

Knotty - YouTube would have been my first port of call, it is for most things <fingers crossed>

First question - does tge size of hook matter to the project as long as tge square is the right size?

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 05:44:24

Morning all smile

I need to have a word with you lovely donors

You are all as much a part of these projects as those who craft. Without you there would be far less wool, far fewer squares and these blankets really wouldn't happen as they do now.
You are as vital a part of these projects as the crafters, as vital as the wool itself.

So no more running yourselves down now. <stern> or I'll be having a few more words. [sleep deprived] Consider yourselves told.

thanks smile

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 05:50:45

LBWS,

We suggest a 4mm hook - it's the suggested size for the wool. It depends on how loose/tight a crocheter you are. I've also used a 4.5 on occasion and that's been fine too. A 5 can be used if you are a very 'tense' worker.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 06:36:42

Morning brew

Have replied to PMs - I had 6 since I went to bed, so I'm hoping that it is working again now. In case it was that it was full, I did turf a lot out. Hopefully we will find out today. It does worry me that people tried and didn't get through though. I shall also go through the thread carefully at lunchtime

thanks

Bless you messymammy Knotty is the true [star] Mine is the easy part, the real hard work is taken up by her when she hooks the squares together into its final glorious whole. Someone once said, the woolly squares are like a pat on the shoulder. They need hooking together to make a Woolly Hug.

More caffeine required... brew

LinzerTorte Tue 28-Feb-12 07:11:32

Here's another brew for you, Pistey. Thanks to you and Knotty for all your hard work in organising this; you're both stars. thanks

tribpot Thanks for the link - it's reminded me how to cast on! (I think I must have been using the knit cast-on before, but the cable cast-on looks very easy too.)

I have ordered my wool. <gulp>

TheRealMBJ Tue 28-Feb-12 07:27:08

Morning. What drama last night grin.

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 07:31:24

We've had less eventful nights grin

I've flagged the PM issue up with MNHQ again this morning so hopefully we may get some answers/help.

<waves to MNHQ>

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 07:58:13

I agree that the donors are very important. I would have loved the whole donor option before I taught myself to crochet.

The blankets would be much smaller without donors.

4mm it is, any advice on tge type of hook to get it metal, bamboo etc?

Pleiades45 Tue 28-Feb-12 08:57:20

It's called teamwork! Some craft and some supply. I wouldn't be able to contribute to these blankets without donors. So a big thank you to you all!

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 08:58:00

I've got both and actually prefer the metal ones.
The wool slides along then nicely.
My wooden ones are the cheap ones though.

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 09:01:39

YAY LovesBeing, you made it thanks

PoohBearsHole Tue 28-Feb-12 09:46:58

Right, I have got the needles, have ordered the wool from the lovely cumberbatch people, they didn't have the colour that I asked for originally and I wanted to get it asap so have asked for one of 3 other colours so hope that it comes ok (have 2 balls anyway so if it doesn't work will keep one aside) however went for the suggested colours and left it to them as to what they had on board. I hope that is ok and I hope that it arrives whilst I am at work so I can get cracking tonight.

I will admit to not being particularly good at knitting and my edges will probably be terrible and my stitch tension also quite appalling grin but I really want to do this and it won't be fancy either by the way! So we shall see how it goes, hoping that you will be able to use them either way.

In all instances, although I am doing this for Mrs K, I am probably making myself feel better and am hoping that if they are truly dreadful squares you won't tell me grin thanks

Kayzr Tue 28-Feb-12 09:49:20

I have recieved the wool I ordered so will post it on to my knitter when I go and do the school run.

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 10:14:28

PoohBear, I'm sure they will be fine. smile
The edges won't matter as they'll be covered by the crochet seaming.

I can always stitch a Twitter bird on top grin

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 10:21:00

MN Techies are on the case of the PM boxes.

thanks

<waves to Techies>

NessaRose Tue 28-Feb-12 10:32:52

Yeyyyy, My wool come today. A massive thank you to the doner. thanks

<waves to purple>

Right off to order my hook!

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 11:08:28

Oooh! More wool smile

No idea who from - pink and that deep pinky purple colour you get when you crush blackberries smile

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 11:09:04

Forgot the thank you to whoever the donor was - I shall finish off Wubbly's squares and then start on these smile

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 11:19:16

Still waiting for donor wool, but I have leftovers from the ones I made so will make a start on some plain grannies. I'm holding onto any useful bits so we can do swapsies on Friday grin

For anyone interested, i'll be at the Global Cafe in Reading from 11.30 on Friday for crochet support, nattering and cake scoffing. All welcome, I'll be there all day to accommodate smile

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 11:20:52

All day? That's one hell of a lot of coffee - make sure you go to the loo before seeing off home grin

PippiL Tue 28-Feb-12 11:23:58

My wool arrived! Thanks so much to the donor. I can't wait to get started, it is lovely and soft and a rich reddy purpley colour.

Knitting with love today.

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 11:25:21

Well, I've got at least one who has to be home for the school run, one who can't make it until dh gets in from work, and one who might come after work.

I'm hoping I won't spend too long on my own in between wink

Kayzr Tue 28-Feb-12 11:26:09

I've cast on 33 stitches but it's not 6 inches. Do I keep casting on until it reaches 6 inches?

GentleOtter Tue 28-Feb-12 11:27:16

It looks tiny when you first cast on. Keep knitting a few rows and it will be 6 inches.

PippiL Tue 28-Feb-12 11:29:34

Kayzr, hate to say it but you might need to knit up 3 or 4 rows before you can identify the actual length. Just the cast on row won't be an accurate measurement.

Then if the length is out after your few rows you haven't lost much time and can always pull it all back and start again.

Hth

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 11:39:17

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1415214-Calling-all-crafty-types-and-blanket-contributors

Meet up link, all welcome - knitters, crocheters and donors thanks

Kayzr Tue 28-Feb-12 11:45:39

Yay it appears to be 6 inches!!!

Smugfearnleyshittingstool Tue 28-Feb-12 11:55:43

So sad. I can knit a few squares, would appreciate wool if anyone has spare.

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 12:04:15

Send a pm to RatherBeOnThePiste thanks she'll match you with someone

AllTheSevens Tue 28-Feb-12 12:14:08

I've just done a plain practice square with some DK I had- when I cast on I was panicking as 33 stitches just didn't look wide enough, but I ploughed on and it did actually measure 6 inches wide.

Just hope I can produce something decent when my wool arrives.

Big thanks to the generous donors of wool.

LinzerTorte Tue 28-Feb-12 12:32:16

SoupDragon I ordered a pink and a purple to be sent to my knitter, but only ordered yesterday morning - not sure whether it would have arrived that quickly.

What sad news. I'd certainly like to contribute this time. Missed the last few blankets but I think subconsiously reading the old threads was what made me start knitting again.

I'm happy to get my own wool so I guess I don't need to PM Pistey until I'm ready to send my square--s--?

What are the best recommendations for online purchases? I think I've used Cucumberpatch before and they were good. Anywhere else?

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 12:36:47

Linzer, if you ordered via Cucumberpatch it's a possiblity.

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 12:40:22

Could be, Linzer smile

I'm sure the organisational brains behind this enterprise knows anyway.

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 12:41:19

If they were sent to someone whose surname is a word, that's probably me!

Kayzr Tue 28-Feb-12 12:42:34

I ordered from Cucumberpatch Sunday evening and got my wool this morning. They are very efficient! grin

LinzerTorte Tue 28-Feb-12 13:04:58

Sounds like it probably is you I sent to, SoupDragon. smile Not sure if you saw my name and address, but my first name is probably the only pronounceable bit of it (if you live in England, at any rate). grin Cucumberpatch certainly are very efficient.

WhoremoaneeGrainger Tue 28-Feb-12 13:13:28

Tnank you to my wonderful donoron this blanket. My wool arrived this morning, a beautiful soft lilac and a gorgeous off white/cream. Thank you so much, whoever you are (and i would love to know?) to be able to thank you "personally".

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 13:33:23

http://crochet-mania.blogspot.com/2009/04/abstract-crochet-cats.html

Thought I might try this^^ what do people think?

Pick of my first attempt now on profile

PippiL Tue 28-Feb-12 13:38:43

Love them!

Methe Tue 28-Feb-12 13:40:15

Anyone have any idea how many links in the foundation chain for 6" of crochet?

My practice run last night didn't go so well blush

PippiL Tue 28-Feb-12 13:40:29

Think I'm going to try a teddy bear. Don't think I will manage a care bear as such, but a teddy should be fairly simple.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 13:41:06

wine Lunchtime!

Sorting to do grin

Maybe best swap the wine for a brew then? <arf>

TimeForCake Tue 28-Feb-12 13:42:14

You're not alone!! I haven't started mine yet but I find it easier to just measure rather than count?

TimeForCake Tue 28-Feb-12 13:42:51

^^ That was to Methe by the way

FruitShootsAndHeaves Tue 28-Feb-12 13:43:51

knitters are you all casting on the 33 stitches or is anyone knitting diagonally?

I've done squares before for the Guides, years and years ago, but we always knitted them from corner to corner.

PippiL Tue 28-Feb-12 13:45:29

Diagonal would look lovely. Would be a nice contrast.

Blatherskite Tue 28-Feb-12 13:51:00

My wool has arrived. It's a lovely pale, dusky pink. Will get it reposted to my crafter this afternoon

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 13:59:32

My lovely Whore - I shall PM them and see if they would like to come forward or would prefer to remain annonny anonnamus annnonnymouse unnoninm innannimis ennonnym iinnynimis private. smile

Methe - I worked it out by trial and error. Most error.

Linzer - you did indeed donate to Soupy thanks The joys of internet shopping for our overseas Mumsnetters. Cucumberpatch post first class the same day if they recieve by noon.

Oooo Nessa - I know who it was that donated to you smile I will be letting all donors know their wool have arrived safely.

We’ve had such a run on Cucumberpatch they have sold out currently of vamp (deep purple) and pompon (deep pinky) maybe even others?

So much wool arriving and on the way - thanks to all lovely donors, or donorons grin You are all totally brilliant

I am just coming to PMs now, well that is if my box has exploded again.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 14:03:44

That should say hasn't exploded again! Knots - have we got anywhere with the techy types?!

Or do we need more rum?

NessaRose Tue 28-Feb-12 14:07:32

Pistey can you say thanks please?

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 14:09:48

Pidj - i love those cats!
looking at the pics, is it american?
we must remember to correct DC to TC
grin

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 14:12:18

Methe - crochet doesn't tend to change shape as much as knitting from foundation chain - i measured approx 6" and the next row was just over 6".
you can always reduce it at the ends if necessary smile

DirtyMartini Tue 28-Feb-12 14:12:18

Oh hi - I should have looked at the thread before. I just sent you a reply, Piste, sorry if that was a mistake given inbox probs. Was just to say the order has gone through to the person you matched me with, so hope the wool will be there soon. A pink and a blue. x

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 14:12:23

My pusscats are in multiples or 5, then ch4 to turn, but have come up slightly over 6". So i'd say ch32 for rows. Grannies are about 7 rounds of treble shells smile

Pusscats proceeding apace!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 14:13:59

One step ahead of you Nessa!
Still just about to start the PMs grin

thanks To NannyNick for your kind donation today - am sending wool out on your behalf. Really really appreciate your support. x

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 14:15:55

DirtyMartini Thank you, I got your PM, it all seems OK today. I just don't know what happened. It may remain a mystery I fear!

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 14:22:35

So, I'm now in discussion with Steve

<waves to Steve>

No limit on PMs. Dunno what happened.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 15:19:08

Knots - I'll email you my thoughts for Steve........

All PMs replied to, heartfelt thanks to everyone. thanks

Reminder of the deadlines.......

thanks Blanket for Wubbly's family - Monday 19th March
thanks Blanket for Mrs Kwazii - Monday 26th March

So that's two Saturdays I will be running to the Post Office in my pyjamas then....

Earlier is absolutely fine, just PM me for the address when you are ready

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 15:23:05

Pusscats now on my profile

I'll collect up any finished squares on Friday and bring them round in person if you like, Knots? Just let me know when thanks

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 15:58:23
Methe Tue 28-Feb-12 16:00:39

Thanks Nikel smile

I have had another practise and I recon a starting chain of 25 ought to be about right,. It's just my problematic edges now.. one straight one and one errrmmmm.. not straight grin

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 16:03:26

my edge are always not-so-straight too.
(that's why i normally do squares in the "round" wink)

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 16:04:23

My squares are just wonky grin

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 16:07:33

best thing about those waffles is they're all trebles! grin
(my comfort zone)

i wish it were possible to crochet while breastfeeding - come on DD, you're cutting into my crochet time!

Blatherskite Tue 28-Feb-12 16:09:43

My wool is on it's way to my lovely crafter....

Methe Tue 28-Feb-12 16:10:13

I love that waffle but find it so confusing that american and british stitches have different names!

Kayzr Tue 28-Feb-12 16:13:31

I have posted out my wool this afternoon. Its a blue ball and a pink ball.

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 16:17:25

yeah, i am now used to hearing "double crochet2 in american accent means "treble crochet" in english grin

it's easier with this waffle, because it's all in trebles, so in theory it can't get too confusing.
it would be worse if it were in doubles and trebles.

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 16:17:44

( " not 2)

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 16:24:08

I auto-translate most American stuff into English, otherwise my pedantic brain would explode!

nickelhasababy Tue 28-Feb-12 16:25:53

a number of times, i have taken written american instructions and pasted them into word and changed the words (find and replace) - i always start with the trebles, cos then it doesn't change them back! grin

travellingwilbury Tue 28-Feb-12 16:34:13

Wool has been ordered and sent this morning , fingers crossed the colours are ok .

SandyMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 28-Feb-12 16:53:01

Hello,

The PM issue is a Techie thing, so I asked Steven to take a look. Here's what he said,

'Sandy has asked me to get in touch about the PM system. We don't delete PMs so you should be able to see all your messages unless you deleted them from your inbox.

We only show 20 messages per page, so some people have lots of pages of messages, which can be awkward to navigate of course - it's on our (long) list of things to improve. But there's no formal limit as such, and you shouldn't need to delete messages to receive new ones.'

Hope this helps for now! smile

KnottyLocks Tue 28-Feb-12 16:56:00

Hello Sandy,

Does he have any idea what happened to Piste's inbox then? Several posters tried to PM her but couldn't. However, once she deleted some, they could PM her again.

Rudawakening Tue 28-Feb-12 16:59:55

My donor will for MrsK's blanket has arrived, a lovely ball of a dusky/raspberry pink colour.

Unfortunately my wool I ordered from cafe knit for Wubbly's blanket is still MIA and they are not answering emails or calls at the minute grrrr

SoupDragon Tue 28-Feb-12 17:04:24

I now find it confusing to crochet in English smile

I've just PMed Piste, did it go through?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 17:13:55

On my phone, back properly later, but yes Brian it has - I have replied x

Rudawakening Tue 28-Feb-12 17:15:00

Also forgot to say a big thank you to my wool donor thanks

smartiesrule Tue 28-Feb-12 17:21:07

Got my 2 balls of beautiful purple wool today, will start the squares tonight when DS's in bed.
I just wanted to say a huge Thank You to my very kind and generous wool donor. thanks

BibiThree Tue 28-Feb-12 17:37:39

This is a beautiful thing. What a wonderful lot you all are! My wool is on it's way to a knitter. I hope it's okay.

BIWI Tue 28-Feb-12 18:03:37

I sent to someone who lives at no 57 wink - so very glad you can do this - I am quite the most useless at anything crafty!

BerryLellow Tue 28-Feb-12 18:41:09

Pistey I have sent my envelope to the address you gave, with your name on it. It now dawns on me that may have been someone else's house, so anyway, someone will be getting a red envelope with pistey on the front. smile

Hi there, I'd also like to contribute some wool. (Knitting is not my forte... but discovered today I can make a mean spider costume!)

I feel for MrsKwazii and her family. This is such sad news.

Pistey I have just dropped you a PM.

I really must learn to crochet - if only to understand what you are all on about smile

Pidj - do bring your squares on Friday smile

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 19:32:50

Oh yes, and my pile of woolly ends, and Peso! I have interviews tomorrow and Thursday but will try and do some more in between and on the train.

WhoremoaneeGrainger Tue 28-Feb-12 19:34:25

Pidj - just looked at your cats - i will be ashamed to send my granny squares in grin

SixtyFootDoll Tue 28-Feb-12 19:34:39

I sent my ball directly to a clever knitter, raspberry pink. I hope it's as lovely as it looks online. Good luck xxx

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 19:39:00

They're really easy and take no time at all! Do you want the pattern link?

LewisFan Tue 28-Feb-12 19:43:54

I love waffle stitch, but because I learned by watching the aussies and yanks on youtube, I struggle to read a UK pattern now!

Have PMed you Pistey, hope it gets through!

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 28-Feb-12 20:04:46

My PM box seems fine now everyone. Not sure we will ever know what happened. Just a weird thing. <sigh>

Now I also want to learn to crochet envy which I think is a bit weird.

<waves to nickel>

Can you start a crafty in you shop?

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 20:48:09

PoohBear, Nickel has offered to host a knit and natter, drop her a pm incase she doesn't spot your post. Or, come to Reading on Friday (give me a mo and I'll link the thread)

PurplePidjin Tue 28-Feb-12 20:49:38
PoohBearsHole Tue 28-Feb-12 21:34:56

I don't live anywhere near Reading grin

I do however live about 10 mins from Nickel (she bullies me under my other nickname, as I always forget the WI and DH is never home in time, so I have changed........<joke nickel joke>)

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Feb-12 06:46:14

Pistey, huge numbers! Hope the PM system can cope!

KnottyLocks Wed 29-Feb-12 09:52:05

I've asked for this thread to be moved to Arts and Crafts now in order to preserve it for MrsKwazii's family to read if they ever want to in the future

Love the twitter bird motif thing

Hello twitterers <waves>

I have finished two squares for Wubbly's blanket and am waiting on my wool order from Cumberpatch so I can start on Mrs Kwaziis.

Have been thiking about both families as I knit. My 9yo was reading this thread over my shoulder and said "Will you teach me how to knit, Mummy, I would like to do a square for the blanket" Awww.

JulesJules Wed 29-Feb-12 10:32:51

thiking?? thinking

mungojenny Wed 29-Feb-12 10:46:38

I received 3 balls of wool this morning from cucumberpatch pale blue and pink so thankyou to the person who organised wool to be sent to me in gloucestershire, I hope you know who you are. thanks

PoohBearsHole Wed 29-Feb-12 11:03:16

Sorry small hijack

I know nickel I know, its just a case of dh getting home on flipping time! So far this week he hasn't managed it once hmm, he is either off with another woman (yeah right- not cocky just realistic grin), asleep in the office (highly flipping likely) or getting ready for my birthday (what he thinks I think he is doing but I know he isn't hmm) so it will be touch and go. 7pm?

re crafty stuff in the shop - I shall be coming straight in if the casting off doesn't work grin

I hope my wool arrives today sad I was so excited yesterday!

nickelhasababy Wed 29-Feb-12 11:15:16

tell him to get his arse in gear - it's important!!
It starts at 7:30, but Sarah won't start until after the business (8o'clock ish?) so it won't matter if you're a bit late. smile

nickelhasababy Wed 29-Feb-12 11:15:58

Jules - that's lovely of your DC. smile

chipmonkey Wed 29-Feb-12 11:38:02

Actually Jules, I may get ds2 to do a square. He did learn to knit somewhere along the way and it would be good practice.

Have just received the yarn from my donor, thank you, very pretty pale pink.
Thanks also for the lovely card with the pink flower wink

KnottyLocks Wed 29-Feb-12 12:04:02

Jules, lovely idea smile we have some mother & daughter teams who are crafting for the Wubbly blanket and we've certainly had some in the past too.

Chip, that would be fantastic. Be our first mother and son team smile

Blatherskite Wed 29-Feb-12 12:12:02

You're welcome Glitterknickaz. Thank you for being my crafter smile

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney Wed 29-Feb-12 12:43:13

I am so so sorry to read the sad news about MrsK beautiful girl. I'm afraid I was born without the craft gene, but would like to donate some wool to one of you fab knitters. Off to PM pistey now.

PurpleSquid Wed 29-Feb-12 14:12:16

I have received some wool this morning. smile It's a lovely sort of pale teal/green colour.

Thank you very much to whoever sent it. smile

CuppaTeaJanice Wed 29-Feb-12 14:49:07

sad

This probably sounds obvious, but has anybody from MNHQ approached the companies who make Debbie Bliss and Rowan wools to tell them that their wool is being used for these wonderful blankets? I'd be surprised if they didn't want to help in some way by maybe sending a few boxes to Mumsnet Towers or enabling Mumsnetters to buy direct at a discounted rate. Saves people having to hunt around for the right sort of wool and bid against each other on ebay etc.

Blatherskite Wed 29-Feb-12 14:51:07

That's a lovely idea cuppa. I've reported the post to MNHQ so hopefully someone will see it soon

PurpleSquid Wed 29-Feb-12 14:51:44

Chipmonkey I HAVE DONE TWO ROWS!

It only took me about an hour, too. grin

Good idea Janice
Piste, envelope is in the post

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Feb-12 14:57:44

Fabulous work again by our lovely donors!

More woolly wool has arrived safely with crafters. Thank you for your generosity..

A donor and her crafter are like any famous double act, one relies on the other. I'm thinking Wallace and Gromit, Ant & Dec, Tom & Jerry, Elephant and Castle <arf> and that man with the big green duck. grin

A huge thank you to:

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Feb-12 14:58:26

Methe Wed 29-Feb-12 14:59:36

Brilliant idea Janice!

I have done half a square of waffle and i'll probably be able to finish it tonight.

My wool is a lovely pink DB one. The senders details aren't on it so I can't thank them personally sad

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Feb-12 15:03:39

Well I know who they are Methe - I shall do it for you right now!

nickelhasababy Wed 29-Feb-12 15:18:36

RatherBeOnThePiste Wed 29-Feb-12 15:22:39

Nickel... you can be the pickle?

<arf>

nickelhasababy Wed 29-Feb-12 15:25:32

cheese and pickle sounds good! My favourite sandwich! grin

would change my name, but when I did the halloween pickledbabe name, it took ages for people to recognise me.

I contacted Cucumberpatch about it last summer too, and linked them to the blanket threads, but didn't hear anything back from them either.

Still waiting for mine, it's hard not to dig into my stash but I want to save that for swapsies on Friday!

Sorry. Bbit late to this one but I'll definitely knit a square or two. I'm afraid I can't pm pistey as i'm on the raspberry but I have the details from wubbly's blanket. The only thing is that my I would appreciate being sent some wool. Would that be possible?

Knitter, if you are happy we'll split your squares over the two blankets. Just put a note in to say that when you send the squares in.
