I've just heard the sad news about Magic8ballhasstheanswers leaving 6mo twins and a 4yo sad

If anybody would like to show their condolences, post here and we'll organise it. I'll take on construction again unless someone else would like a turn?

IvySedai (who messaged me to let me know) is happy to co-ordinate so PM's from Donors and Crafters needing a match to her please.

Previous squares were 6", knitted or crocheted. Blues, pinks and purples were the most popular colours. Debbie Bliss Cashmerino or Rowan Cashsoft DK (links are just the first ones I found on google) It's also available in John Lewis.

Lastly, was there anything in particular that Magic liked and could be incorporated in the design?

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 11:00:02

Can we send money using paypal pidj?

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 11:00:24

Oops sorry I'll message Ivy

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:04:23

Would you be able to buy a ball of wool or two to send to a crafter? Last time, we had lots of people with money but no ability and lots of people with ability buy no money, and they helped each other out...

gapants Thu 18-Aug-11 11:10:29

sorry, what has happened to magic please?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:13:10

I don't know, just that she's passed on sad

I've PM'd the thread link to Ivy so she can give us some accurate information

MissPenteuth is happy for the PayPal to be reopened for this, if people would like to donate money.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 11:14:12

Thank you for starting this thread pidj.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:15:38

I'll go and do one in Arts and Crafts for some woolly types, then we can leave this one open to co-ordinate the whole lot.

Would it be possible to know what happened, please?

gapants Thu 18-Aug-11 11:15:50

Oh god that is so sad....I can knit. I have some wool, merino, not debbie bliss, but works the same. Navy, Lilac, light Blue, bright blue, purple colours...would that be OK. What are the sqaure measurements- cast on no, and then no of rows please. I knit, but not brilliantly.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 11:18:49

this is an excerpt from a pm from cerubina about magic8

"All I know is that [DH] came home from work (having only just gone back after holidays) and found her on the sofa. I know that [DD1] was supposed to go to her granny's for a few days this week and I pray that this had already happened but I am not sure. I can't bear to think of her and the twins being there with [Magic8] unconscious and not understanding what was happening, or not knowing what to do to help.

I don't know if you were aware, but she had a pacemaker fitted because her heart did not transmit electrical impulses properly. Her heart rate was very low and this was supposed to correct it. I don't have any information to confirm but I presume that something went wrong here and she would have passed out, hopefully very peacefully and quietly and without realising what was happening. It's just so tragic, especially given what they had been through with Ruby and how delighted she was with the babies. I don't know how the family begin to get over it."

that is all we know at this point sad

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:22:55

Gapants, I'm afraid it needs to be the same for every square otherwise it won't wash and wear well. We can arrange for some wool to be sent. IIRC (I can't knit, only crochet) it's cast on 33 on 4mm needles?

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 11:41:32

Oh no, how awful. I didn't ever interact with magic8 but I know how much good she did on the pregnancy boards. sad

I cannot knit or crochet but my MIL is excellent. I will buy the right wool and ask her to do it on my behalf so please count me in.

Hate seeing these threads pop up. sad (Not that I hate seeing requests for blankets as that itself is lovely, just hate knowing that someone has gone)

StrandedBear Thu 18-Aug-11 11:44:59

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

gapants Thu 18-Aug-11 11:50:01

Oh god that is terrible, her poor poor family.

Ok about the wool. I will ask my other knitter friends to see if they have any of that wool before I go and buy some.

peeoffkitty Thu 18-Aug-11 11:50:29

I can knit and would like to help. Sorry to ask the obvious, but sounds like this is something that has been done before. What happens with the blanket, is it sent to the family? Such a lovely idea.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:50:32

Thank you Bupcakes. If you'd like to get her to teach you, I'll include it. I can incorporate pretty much anything, and one with dropped stitches from someone who has taught themself is a valuable as a dozen from an expert to a project like this.

Stranded, you can order from the links in the OP or buy in person in John Lewis (and probably some independent wool shops)

You want Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Double Knit or Rowan Cashsoft Double Knit - NOT the baby stuff, it's a different weight.

I don't mean to boss everyone around on wool, it's just that if everyone uses the same type and weight the blanket will wash and last better blush

pamplemousserose Thu 18-Aug-11 11:54:14

Is there a pattern for crochet?

Narketta Thu 18-Aug-11 11:54:18

I didn't know Magic8ball but would be happy to crochet some squares. The only problem I have is lack of funds for wool, Will we be having wool doners as we did for Edgars blanket?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:56:43

peeoffkitty, this is the fourth family this year sad and the blanket is a present to them from MumsNetters. It means that they're not swamped by lots of individual messages, and people who "knew" the poster can express their condolences.

After a scary experience with ParcelForce losing the blanket in transit (MissPenteuth got it back, don't worry), the previous three were all handed over in person - to Edgar and Rinders at a lunch meetup, and to Blondes by RatherBeOnThePiste who came to the lunch and took the blanket on.

If we need to get one outside the South of England (geography has been on our side) then we'll organise a MN relay across the country

5GoMadOnAZ650 Thu 18-Aug-11 11:57:16

I cannot knit but would happily donate to a wool fund.

fivegomadindorset Thu 18-Aug-11 11:57:40

Narketta, happy to donate funds but will need to send by post of BACS as I don't have paypal.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:58:23

Pamplemousserose, granny squares are lovely - I can find you a youtube link or some written instructions? Ravelry is a brilliant resource, especially if you want to try something new...

Yes, Narketta. Hold on and we'll find you someone!

peeoffkitty Thu 18-Aug-11 11:58:41

So sad but what a beautiful gift. Mumsnet really is a wonderful place. So its 33 stitches on 4mm doing a square to the tension of the wool. I'll get cracking on that this weekend. sad

SpannerPants Thu 18-Aug-11 11:58:54

I'd like to help - I've just bought some wool, are there any instructions to get the right size square? I can knit and crochet.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 11:59:30

Please may Donors needing Crafters and Crafters needing Donors PM IvySedai (as well as posting here so we can say thank you) so that you can be matched? Thanks

TadlowDogIncident Thu 18-Aug-11 11:59:38

Another one here who can't knit but would gladly donate. So sorry for magic8ball and her family.

pamplemousserose Thu 18-Aug-11 11:59:59

I can do granny squares. What size do they need to be?

pamplemousserose Thu 18-Aug-11 12:01:01

Where was magic 8 based?

Narketta Thu 18-Aug-11 12:03:04

Have PM'd Ivy. smile

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 12:03:08

The best way is to use the links in the OP and buy a ball (or balls) of wool for your Crafter, enter their address for Delivery.

Or, go to JL, buy it and post it.

Or, money to MissPenteuth (this is the hardest option for us to co-ordinate)

The wool is around £5 per ball, and one ball makes 3-4 squares. Extra wool can be sent on to me as I will use it to join the squares together, or crafters are welcome to make multiple squares!

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 12:04:46

SpannerDog, please check the OP to see if you have the right wool - if it's not the right weight and mix of fibres, the blanket won't wash and wear well (sorry to be bossy)

Pamplemousse, 6" please.

I'll go find some patterns on Ravelry...

TadlowDogIncident Thu 18-Aug-11 12:06:20

Have PM'ed Ivy, thanks.

setara Thu 18-Aug-11 12:11:09

Have PM'ed Ivy, this is a wonderful idea btw

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 12:19:49
StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 12:25:03

I'm making a spreadsheet to try to match donors and knitters/crocheters.

Would be grateful if you could pm me, so I can coordinate addresses etc.

thank you to everyone who is getting involved. The response on these threads is always absolutely overwhelming.

Magic8 (Natalie) lived in London.

Muser Thu 18-Aug-11 12:26:15

I'll knit a square, she was a friend and I can't believe she's gone. I'll make sure to buy the right sort of wool. I've only got the baby stuff at home so will go and get more. Happy to send the excess on to aid joining together.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 12:27:07

Thank you, Muser

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 Thu 18-Aug-11 13:01:50

I have Rowan Baby cashsoft DK, will this be OK?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 13:06:12

Sorry, NK3, it's a different weight sad PM IvySedai and she'll match you to a donor?

trumpton Thu 18-Aug-11 13:12:29

I will do 3 squares of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK. So sad to have to have to do this again yet so priviledged to be part of the caring that is Mumsnet. ( Anniversary of my Mum's death today ) x

Still to the same address ? Might need a reminder.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 13:21:42

Thanks, Trumpton. I'll resend my address once we know who to send it to iyswim.

MilkNoSugarPlease Thu 18-Aug-11 13:28:18

Oh god...this is so so sad....fucking hell

Will buy wool and post (but can't until next week) if easier option (knitting/crochet us not my thing)

TimeForCake Thu 18-Aug-11 13:31:15

So very sad sad. Have PM'd Ivy about donating wool to someone more skilled than me.
Once again, MN at its best.

Bogeyface Thu 18-Aug-11 13:31:55

Have PM'd Ivy.

Thank you for organising this. Its so heartbreaking sad

MugglesandLuna Thu 18-Aug-11 13:37:55

I cant knit for toffee, but I can buy wool and send it to someone if I get pointed in the right direction.

Such a tragedy sad

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 13:40:58

All offers are gratefully received, whether to craft or to buy. Thank you.

ComeWhineWithMe Thu 18-Aug-11 13:43:44

This is so sad, will be happy to donate or send some wool.

rushofbloodtothefeet Thu 18-Aug-11 13:44:04

I've been matched to crafter (thanks Ivy) so I'll get a ball or two sent off. Do we have a colour pallet in mind? Or softer/stronger or lighter/darker suggestions?

I have pm'd Ivy.

So sad sad

DraculasMum Thu 18-Aug-11 13:49:43

If you need any assistance with getting the blanket to the family I am in east anglia (peterborough).

Such sad news.

DraculasMum Thu 18-Aug-11 13:49:43

If you need any assistance with getting the blanket to the family I am in east anglia (peterborough).

Such sad news.

ComradeJing Thu 18-Aug-11 13:53:42

I've PM'd Ivy. Really sorry to hear this. sad

giraffesCantHulaHoop Thu 18-Aug-11 13:56:51

oh thats so sad

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 13:57:51

In that case, if we're able to donate the wool and get someone to craft for us non-knitters, I will do that I think. I will PM Ivy now.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 13:58:05

thank you to all who want to get involved.
it's easier for me to match you up/keep track of everyone if you pm me, then I can add you to my spreadsheet (which I would be completely lost without).

If you are a crafter who would like to be matched up with a wool donor, could you please pm me your address?

thank you all so much again.
I am, once again, completely overwhelmed.

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 13:58:52

That's what I'm doing Buppy - I'm hopeless at crafts but can buy wool & post it!

notbothered Thu 18-Aug-11 13:59:00

so sad im from nw london, but can get anywhere just let me know if you need help to get blanket to the family. (off to get some wool)

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 13:59:17

Oh Ivy x posted!

digitalgirl Thu 18-Aug-11 14:00:31

Thanks so much for organising this Ivy - I've bought some wool and sent it off. Thanks to the knitters too, you're all wonderful. Magic would be very proud of what she has inspired.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 14:02:37

Thank you

ComeWhine, have you pm'd Ivy?

Colours that were popular last time were pinks, blues and purples. Each dye lot comes up slightly different and it makes a lovely effect Photos

DraculasMum, thank you very much. The family are apparently in London and I'm in the New Forest, so it should be fairly straightforward smile

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 14:04:34

Where is everyone getting wool from?

ThePosieParker Thu 18-Aug-11 14:06:28

Gosh this is awful, her poor DH and children. xxx

DraculasMum Thu 18-Aug-11 14:09:45

Just had a thought, if you struggle with getting it to the family my partner works for a large courier company so could arrange delivery easily.

Thumbwitch Thu 18-Aug-11 14:10:03

So sorry to hear the sad news. I don't think I had much interaction with Magic but how awful for her family. sad

I am a bit stuck in Australia with no Paypal and no chance of getting the right wool - but have an idea. Can anything be appliquéd to these blankets? I could send something over that could be sewn on? Of course it might not work but it was an idea.

Failsafe Thu 18-Aug-11 14:10:52

Oh how tragic, condolences to Magic8's family.
Not really "met" magic8 as i'm quite new but will happily donate wool. Will PM Ivy now.
Im in the east midlands if any help is needed in getting the blanket to the family.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 14:15:31

This website has a big selection or Rowan

This website has a good selection of Debbie Bliss

If you wait til you know your crafter's address, you can have it delivered directly to them (I think, I don't do much internet shopping)

You can also buy it in John Lewis, and other independent wool shops. I know the big independent department store in Winchester (can't remember the name blush) has it at a good price.

Dracula'sMum, that's a fantastic offer and thank you very much. It'll take at least a month to organise and construct this (there's 100 squares in each of the previous blankets, which gives 20' of edging to do, so quite a lot of crocheting) so I'll have to get back to you. It also depends on how the family would prefer to receive it - anonymously, or by meeting the people involved...

Sorry to be a numpty, but how do I PM?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 14:17:44

You see the blue bar containing the poster's name? Look along that to the right and it says "Add message | Report | Message Poster"

Find a post by the person you want to message, then click on the "Message poster" next to their name

I have pm'd ivy as I can knit but don't have money for thoughts go to her is just so sad.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 14:18:43

Thanks, SongBirds, as far as I can tell from here we're a little short on crafty types at the moment!

Hi, im so sorry to hear about this. I would like to help out by knitting a few squares. Just let me know where to send them. I also own a wool shop, and where as we dont stock a huge amount of Debbie Bliss i have got a few shades in the cashmerino DK that i can sell to anyone who needs at £3 a ball instead of £4.50. The colours i have left are cream, pale green, purple, pale pink and pale blue. Id give it for free if i could. Ifanyone is interested i can let you know what amounts ive got left x x

Bogeyface Thu 18-Aug-11 14:20:43

Are there any patterns that are preferred or should be avoided due to thickness etc? Cable for example?

pamplemousserose Thu 18-Aug-11 14:24:35

I'm happy to craft for someone else, can't pm on my phone

DutchOma Thu 18-Aug-11 14:27:29

this site sells the Cashmerino DK at £4.20 a ball. If you ask Ivy for the address of a crafter you will only have to pay postage once, if it goes directly to the crafter and not via you.

Just pm'ed you Ivy, I can knit if someone can supply the yarn

Thanks PP - have now PM'd you. And so sorry to be so dumb.

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 14:35:22

Ready can I claim you to knit if I send you the wool?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 14:35:58

Lydia, you are absolutely amazing!! Thank you grin Post up some details so we can all buy from you <plans next holiday to visit lovely wool shop>

Bogey, anything you think Magic8 would have liked

Pamplemousse, have you PM'd Ivy?

Dutch, also thank you. I just nicked the first relevant-looking link from googl blush

Wooluff, we all have to learn so don't worry. I've forwarded your message to Ivy so she can put you in the spreadsheet.

toomuchteaching Thu 18-Aug-11 14:40:03

I wish I could knit, but I'll buy a ball of wool.

Those photos are beautiful pidj.

Maybe we could have the girls' initials on some squares, I have no idea if that is possible but they are I, R, B and X. And an 8 for magic8?

I still can't believe it.

Hi, ive just pm'd you pp! If any of these shades is useful and anyone wants any let me know asap and i will pull off my shelves. I will also post these for free. ok what i have left is,
pale green shade 188-13balls
cream shade 198-9 balls
purple shade 253-10 balls
pink shade 199-12 balls
blue shade 256-7 balls
dark green shade 243-6 balls

100years Thu 18-Aug-11 14:46:09

I can knit and crochet, will PM Ivy about it. My LO is due in 2 weeks and planning a trip to JL tomorrow to pick up a couple of items so I will hopefully be able to pick up some wool then. Hoping LO will stay put long enough for me to do this. I didn't know Magic 8, but tbh I don't really post in many of the threads.

nickelbabe Thu 18-Aug-11 14:49:46

I'd love to help again.

I've still got some of the wool from last time (i was hoping I wouldn't need it again sad )

I'm learning to do bobble squares in crochet, so I'll try to do my square/s like that.

nickelbabe Thu 18-Aug-11 14:52:41

Lydia - that's a lovely offer. smile

PinotsKittens Thu 18-Aug-11 14:54:00

My wool ordered and on it's way to SongBird.

I've also asked the comapny that if they have any spare they can donate as it's for such a good cause.

Just wish it wasn't necessary sad

100years Thu 18-Aug-11 14:55:51

lydia I missed your post. I will PM you smile

im just glad to help. Without wanting to go off track my brother died 3 years ago aged 11, my mum made a patch work blanket out of his old clothes, it really does help her having it. It should be his birthday today, he would be 14, seems a bit like i was meant to be on this thread. (im not weird i promise!)

toomuchteaching Thu 18-Aug-11 14:58:57

Oh lydia I'm sorry. Thank you for your generous offer, I'm sure the family will appreciate it.

Thanks Pinot x

GalaxyWeaver Thu 18-Aug-11 15:01:49

i've only just taken up knitting.. but i'd like to donate a square if i can.

DutchOma Thu 18-Aug-11 15:03:01

Not the least bit weird, Lydia. I'm praying that you will find some comfort in contributing to the blanket for another bereaved family.

rushofbloodtothefeet Thu 18-Aug-11 15:04:39

lydia so sorry about your brother, how lovely of you to be helping someone else out at this time.

Hope you got my PM with address, think we might have cross posted?

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 15:06:34

Sorry to be a knitting numpty but... just rang the haberdashers in my village and she stocks Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino. Is this the same as the cashmerino that purple linked to in the OP?

QueenofJacksDreams Thu 18-Aug-11 15:07:48

I'm expecting some JL vouchers at the end of the month so will pick up some wool then with them I'm so sorry for Magic's family sad

ReindeerBollocks Thu 18-Aug-11 15:12:04

I've got a couple of squares knocking about from last time, if you want them? They were for another persons blanket but I sent the first few batches then found these later.

I can also drop off/post wool to any MNetter who wants to contribute.

Please can I have the address to send them to - or is it the same as last time?

ReindeerBollocks Thu 18-Aug-11 15:12:47

I also send my condolences to Magics children and husband at this time.

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 15:27:45

Right, have just bought a ball of Rowan Cashsoft in Baby Blue. Hope this is OK. Will send it to my crafter asap.

harassedandherbug Thu 18-Aug-11 15:34:41

I've just pm'd Ivy offering to knit.

Such a lovely thing everyone is doing. I didn't "know" Magic8 but had seen her around on the Preg boards, and hers was such a happy ending. It gave me such hope after my two mc's so close together.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 15:38:18

buppy I don't think the Baby wool is the same as the normal double knit, but purplepidjin will know more

thank you again to everyone, I have just managed to catch up with all the pms and have matched 15 pairs of donors/crafters already, with a few more still waiting. this truly is MN at its best.

ThoseArentSpiritFingers Thu 18-Aug-11 15:39:45

looked at photos of previous blankets, beautiful idea, im sure this one will be just as nice.

pinkthechaffinch Thu 18-Aug-11 15:49:20

I've just pm'ed you too, Ivy. I can knit and would like to help, although I didn't 'know' the poor lady.

FriskyBivalves Thu 18-Aug-11 15:59:02

I can knit and would love to do a square. Is it knit one purl
One? Will try to pick up 4pm needles this weekend if I don't have any, plus some wool. Count me in...

happymole Thu 18-Aug-11 16:15:57

Please could you pm me? i'm on my phone so can't, but can reply.

So sad to know that another blanket is needed. Would love to donate wool.

cherryburton Thu 18-Aug-11 16:17:26

PM'd you Ivy.

I recall the name but didn't know magic8 well. So sad though, my heart goes out to her family. Happy to knit squares. Is there a deadline?

BupcakesandCunting Thu 18-Aug-11 16:37:14

I thought it might not be Ivy, so I opted for the Rowan Cashsoft DK (really hope this is the right stuff! When I looked at the labels there seemed to be lots of different ones... Aran/Baby/etc)

DairyBeetle Thu 18-Aug-11 16:38:59

I've PM'd you as well Ivy, I'm not the greatest of knitters (in fact squares are about my limit) but would be happy to contribute one or two.

I didn't know Magic8 but saw her posts on the pregnancy boards, my thoughts are with her DH, DD and the babies.

JKSLtd Thu 18-Aug-11 16:43:05

PP - very sorry to hear this though I never 'met' Magic8, very sad sad

Can I ask how did it go giving Edgar their blanket? Never saw a thread about it but that was the one that really affected me as story was similar to ours re brain tumour & op.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 17:14:16

TooMuch, thanks - it is possible to do initials in knitting and I'll be sure to put those somewhere in the middle if anyone would like to?

Lydia, that's an incredibly generous offer. I know from experience that the purple is a particularly pretty shade <<hug>>

Galxay, have you PM'd IvySedai?

Bupcakes, the baby is thinner than the regular DK, please get the Double Knit! The blanket will wash and wear much better if all the wool is the same. Yarns wash and dry at different rates causing warping, which it would be nice to avoid so this can be a lasting reminder.

Thanks, Reindeer, same address

<trots off to page 2, serves me right for going out!>

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 17:16:45

right, I think I've paired up everyone except those whose addresses I don't have yet, and a couple of donors.

thank you all again.

PP, shall I start a thread in Arts and Crafts?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 17:19:50

Frisky, any style you like - is a good resource for patterns. Charity shops are a good place to get cheap needles/hooks but you have to ask because they keep them under the counter because they're an offensive weapon hmm Have you PM'd Ivy?

Bupcakes, it is very confusing but it sounds like you got it spot on grin

Dairy, thank you - and thank you to anyone else I haven't thanked! I hadn't met Magic either, but couldn't possibly say no when Ivy asked for advice in organising this sad

JKSL you have PM

Besom Thu 18-Aug-11 17:24:34

Very sorry to hear about this.

I'm only a learner crocheter, but will have a go. I have some purple Rowan handknit cotton I could to use - would that do? If not I'm happy to get some of the other stuff.

If you pm me with where to send it?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 17:24:53

Ivy, I did one this morning asking for volunteers and I'm steering people your way from there

herbietea Thu 18-Aug-11 17:25:14

Message withdrawn

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 17:26:50

Besom, please use either the Cashmerino or Cashsoft in Doubleknit. Different yarns wash and dry at different rates meaning the blanket will warp and won't last very long. Sorry to be bossy. Any colour, any style is fine!

Bulk PM with my address will be sent once we're underway

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 17:27:51

herbie, IvySedai has a spreadsheet matching people. I'm sure your skills will be extremely useful is we have more donors than crafters! Thank you

Narketta Thu 18-Aug-11 17:30:17

Ivy I haven't been paired up yet, I PM'd you my address.

happymole Thu 18-Aug-11 17:32:34

I've been paired and will send wool tomorrow

Big thanks to purple and ivy for coordinating x

Besom Thu 18-Aug-11 17:33:53

OK purple - will get some from JL.

Hi ladies, I was a friend of magic

her daughters initials are I, X and B, she also had a much loved angel baby daughter with the initial R if anyone wanted to include of of that.

She always referred to her twins as spiderbabies whilst she was carrying them

She loved butterflies

Her dh is A

She actually lived in surrey as opposed to greater London.

MN is a wonderful wonderful place, None of us can believe our beautiful friend is gone. sad

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 18:19:09

Thank you for that information, lia - hopefully lots of people can do butterflies, if not initials! I might have a stab at a crochet spider, or possibly pair of spiders...

ive looked on ravelry and they do have a few initial squares, measurements will just need to be checked to ensure a 6" square x x

theglove Thu 18-Aug-11 19:05:36

This is a lovely idea, awful that it's such sad circumstances.
I'd also like to knit or crochet some squares, I've PMd Ivy and will follow instructions.

ive just looked and ravelry and if you type in 'butterfly chart' there are a few on their that could be converted on to a square x

Oh no sad

I have a ball left over from last time, seemed to have been sent an extra ball somehow

I have one square already done, and I manage 3 squares out of one ball. Are they going to be sent to you purple?

100years Thu 18-Aug-11 19:37:06

Lydia is sending wool to me tomorrow so I'll be able to get cracking on mine soon.

If I crochet (granny square) with a 4mm hook would that be the best to get a 6" square? If not which would be?

ChippingIn Thu 18-Aug-11 19:56:40

Oh no sad I can't believe it - it's so sad. Lots of love to those of you who knew her and especially to her family - those poor girls & A.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 20:02:13

is a pretty crochet butterfly could be attached to a 6" Granny?

I did one that was basically, start your Granny square, ch 5, dc in space, ch 4, dc in space, ch4, dc in space, ch 5, dc in space - by now you should be back at the beginning. Then 10tc in ch 5, dc in dc, 8tc in ch 4, dc in dc, 8tc in ch 4, dc in dc, 10tc in ch 5, dc in dc. Ch 6, dc in 2nd from hook and along, sl st, ch 6, dc in 2nd from hook and along, finish off.

Then you attach a different colour in a space on your granny square (which is also the body of your butterfly) and carry on as normal avoiding wings wink

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 20:02:46

100years, spot on smile

thelittlefriend Thu 18-Aug-11 20:03:17

I've emailed IvgSedai hoping to donate some wool to someone.

100years Thu 18-Aug-11 20:10:18

Thanks purple smile

I'd love to have a go at making a butterfly, but with time being possibly fairly limited for me I think I will just do the granny square/squares. If LO does arrive early I have a couple of people I could ask to do this for me whether it be knitting or crochet.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 20:21:21

I'm fairly fast, so I underestimate how long it takes others, sorry blush a granny square takes me less than an hour, and putting a blanket together is a couple of days with other stuff going on (my job means i have to be physically present for the entire shift but not necessarily actively working for all of that time)

The one I did is easier than the pattern looks. I held two different colours together for the butterfly bit, then a totally different colour for the background

100years Thu 18-Aug-11 20:29:22

Oh sorry I didn't mean it if it came across like that. I've no idea how long it will take me to do a granny square, I'm currently mid blanket for the LO, and some days I whizz through it, others it's like I'm a real slow mo. I'm just on about my LO arriving early that's all, if I've done a square or two and have time I may attempt to make a butterfly but would rather concentrate on the plain square first and get that done. I've only started crochet this year, knitting started last year, so I'm a novice, but enjoy it and have picked it up quite well I think. Hence why I don't know how long a square will take. Who knows I might be like you.

mumatron Thu 18-Aug-11 20:32:57

I can't pm off my phone but I am more than happy to donate wool again if it is needed.

Pm me if so and i will get it sent asap.

Rip magic sad

Failsafe Thu 18-Aug-11 20:33:10

I've been paired with herbietea I will order the wool tomorrow morning and send it direct to you herbie.

This is such a fantastic thing to do for the family, MN at its best.

LewisFan Thu 18-Aug-11 20:39:55

so utterly tragic sad

I've pmed ivy too - can't knit but will buy some wool

I'm in west herts so not a million miles from London if you need a blanket train to get it to the family, but I think at this time, it would be best coming from a friend that knew her if that makes sense

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 20:51:52

thank you for your pms everyone, I think I have matched everyone I could so far, but let me know if I've forgotten you.
I am also going to put this list here because I want to show you all how amazing MN is at times like these.

Donors who have been matched:

Crafters who have been matched:

donors who still need matching:

crafters who still need matching/send me addresses please:

other crafty people who have messaged and said they will get involved:

please let me know if I have left you out, if you would like to donate or help with the crafting (in which case please pm me with your postal address, not your email address smile )

DutchOma Thu 18-Aug-11 20:59:52

Thanks for the match Ivy, look forward to getting it and doing the squares. I think I will try and do letters, I've got an alphabet somewhere.

Lonnie Thu 18-Aug-11 21:02:09

I would like to do a few squares but can I have the measurements of the squares please? I knit the continental way and the stitch width etc wont work for that (usually - I will start off trying obviously)

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 21:12:41

lonnie the squares are 6" wide, you can match it with your own tension and gauge.

skinnymuffin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:14:09

This is so sad sad

I can knit but I'm only a beginner and I don't want to spoil the blanket if I'm not good enough, but I would like to help so I will add my name to the donor list.

I'll pm ivy now.

My thoughts are with all Magic8's family and friends x

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:21:50

Sorry, 100 - I would estimate no more than an afternoon as long as you don't actually have to learn to do the stitches smile

Lewisfan, I'll wave at you next week when I visit the IL's wink It will take at least 3 weeks for all the squares to reach me, then another one to put together, then we need to find a convenient time... I would estimate it will reach the family in early October so hopefully when things don't feel quite so raw sad and, of course, someone can hang on to it until they feel ready.

That's an impressive list, Ivy. At some point I'll dredge up the list of contributors to all the blankets - I think we got to about 400? - and add everyone in. Such a wonderful thing to do, but such an awful reason to have to do it sad

Lonnie, 6" please smile

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:23:15

Skinny it would be an honour to put your square on the blanket - one square that has taken sweat and tears for a beginner to produce is worth dozens from someone why knocks them up in 20 minutes!

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:23:29

Why?? Who!

LewisFan Thu 18-Aug-11 21:27:53

I will tryyyyy to make one too - but I am useless... I will donate as well as try so at least I know one will make it!

please may I be very rude and ask for a wool reminder? thanks

FreudianSlipper Thu 18-Aug-11 21:33:12

what terribly terribly sad new sad how awful for her children and her partner

it is lovely what you are doing, i can not knit at all but shall pm ivy to help in another way

Lonnie Thu 18-Aug-11 21:35:27

thank You 6" I can work with.. (now dd3 will start complaining Ive still not finished her blanket though so I guess this will make me get on with that too)

peeoffkitty Thu 18-Aug-11 21:38:14

I don't know how to do a PM but definitely count me in for doing a couple of squares. I'll get my own wool this weekend.

FoxyRevenger Thu 18-Aug-11 21:40:41

I can't knit. And I have not a penny in the bank right now.

But you are all wonderful, thoughtful woman and you make MN the place that it is.

If Magic' family ever reads this, Magic always came across as so genuine and funny in her posts, we will all miss her lovely light spirit.

skinnymuffin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:44:42

Thank you purple, have pm'd you.

What a lovely place mn is when it counts.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 18-Aug-11 21:46:36

foxy - thank you.
we (some friends of magic's) are putting together a memory book for her family. I think we will print out this thread and add it.

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 21:54:48

Foxy, you have PM

NessaRose Thu 18-Aug-11 21:56:39

Ivy have PM'ed you.

Gay40 Thu 18-Aug-11 21:57:45

Oh I can't knit at all but I'd love to be able to donate somehow. I'll send wool if I can do it online. Will pm ivy

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 22:01:32

Gay40 yes you can, just make sure you have the address of a crafter then put it in the "Delivery Address" bit

Can anyone confirm that actually works? blush

Meow75 Thu 18-Aug-11 22:12:30

PP - that will work. I've done it.

I PM'd Ivy about 10 minutes ago as a crafter. I am another novice knitter, as I only started in April, but I would feel honoured to contribute to this blanket.

It is us that should feel honoured PP, to be part of a community that has people like you and Ivy in it, prepared to go to the trouble of doing this for - for most of us - an Internet friend/acquaintance.

Knitter's love to all, and may your squares grow quickly and without dropping too many stitches. wink

TimeForCake Thu 18-Aug-11 22:13:25

I have ordered things from amazon and had them sent somewhere else, so it should work purplepidjin. I have ordered my wool through lydiathetattooedlady and she sounds well organised. She is sending mine on to a more crafty MNetter. So that method definitely works!

Good luck all, such a worthy cause and one day the blanket will hopefully bring great comfort to the 'magic's'. As with Edgar, I hadn't come magic's posts before, but I haven't been able to get her/her family out of my thoughts all day. So sad sad.

Bohica Thu 18-Aug-11 22:14:30

I'm maring my place & although I haven't knitted before I am seeing my Nanny soon so I'm sure that beteen us e could make a square.

I'll PM Ivy.

I'm in Essex if that helps with passing the finished quilt around.

TimeForCake Thu 18-Aug-11 22:16:00

*come across magic's posts.

lisad123 Thu 18-Aug-11 22:17:39

I can't knit but would love to send money for wool or buy wool please.

mnistooaddictive Thu 18-Aug-11 22:25:38

I have a square I knitted last time but never sent as by the time u finished it, there were already too many!
I will send it ASAP. Is it the same address as before?

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 22:32:55

Ah yes, the wonderful Lydia - that's probably the best way to ensure it goes to the right place!

Meow, I think over 400 people have contributed in some way to an MN blanket so far this year smile and sad

Bohica, that sounds perfect - let Ivy know if you need wool sent

Lisa, PM IvySedai and she'll find you a crafter to send it to

purplepidjin Thu 18-Aug-11 22:33:41

mnis, yes they're all coming to me again

Argh, by the time i type stuff i've xposted with people!

lia66 Thu 18-Aug-11 22:47:11

I've got one too from last time so will send you that too.

Bogeyface Thu 18-Aug-11 23:09:20

Would it be possible for the donors to PM their crafters?

I know I have been matched but I dont know who with and I would like to send my donor pictures of our squares so they know what we have created between us.

GalaxyWeaver Thu 18-Aug-11 23:15:29

just as a confession.. it was wanting to be able to contribute to one of MN's blankets that prompted me to take up knitting again... for the first time in 20yrs.

I learned as a child and forgot everything shock

TheRealMBJ Thu 18-Aug-11 23:18:48

pidj do you still need a square or two? I can do some more in the same sort of granny square style I did for the others as they are pretty quick (have NC in the mean time - I sent you 2 balls of yarn last time)

Are we sending the squares to your address again?

Blondeshavemorefun Thu 18-Aug-11 23:20:22

i have just seen this sad

i cant beleive another blanket is needed so soon purple

i am so touched by all on mn that donated/knitted etc for my lovely blanket which i hope to snuggle in soon

same as last time i am useless at buying wool and cant knit at all but im happy to pay for wool - so if someone can order me some and i will pay via paypal/online banking

Sorry for the sad loss in the Magic Family.

WhoremoaneeGrainger Thu 18-Aug-11 23:50:09

Have pmd lydia, ivy and purple, so will get under way as soon as i get the wool.

Ivy, I have PM'd you about being a donor

I have three or four squares already done (I'd done them for a previous blanket, but didn't get them posted in time). I still have the envelope you sent me the first time, Purple (I needed a bigger envelope so used one of mine) so shall I just post them straight off to you?

So sorry to hear about Magic - and my heart goes out to her family. sad

I've just sent some wool to my knitter who lives on a road beginning with L from laughing hens. Hope you like the colours.

FabbyChic Fri 19-Aug-11 00:53:19

Sent details I'm a knitter so happy to do some knitting.

muddyangels123nomoreHPforme Fri 19-Aug-11 01:21:50

So sorry for the family.

I can't knit, but am willing to donate money for a ball of wool/ or team up with a knitter!

Mumwithadragontattoo Fri 19-Aug-11 01:25:34

I am so sorry for Magic8's family. So sad. I will gladly knit a few squares and will PM Lydia re wool.

Very sad, I've PMd Ivy with the offer of cash. Nobody would want anything I tried to knit or crochet.

pinkcupcakefairy Fri 19-Aug-11 07:57:41

I've just ordered wool for my knitter, V in Lincolnshire and I ballsed up the order so you have 3 balls of wool on the way from laughing hen, as I appear to have added 1 colour twice. Hope you like the colours

Ladyface Fri 19-Aug-11 08:16:06

My sincere condolences to her family and friends. I can knit and will get some wool today.

Meow75 Fri 19-Aug-11 08:50:27

Pinkcupcakfairy, I think that's me.

Shall get right on it - needles are at the ready!

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 09:04:20

Question of the day is: Where Do I Send My Squares?

The answer is: To me, at my address which will be sent out via PM once there's a definitive list of people. If I send it in dribs and drabs, some people will get it twice and some won't get it at all because i'm too crap to keep track

If you already have my address from a previous blanket, feel free to send it straight away - but you will still get a PM with my address!! (sorry)

I'll get them in the post asap, purple.

gapants Fri 19-Aug-11 11:48:32

Hi, I posted earlier. i have no wool but would be happy to knit up some squares if there is wool going about? Should I PM IVY?

TimeForCake Fri 19-Aug-11 11:59:41

Yes, i did and ivy matched me up. I think she has an efficient spread sheet going, to keep track of what's going on!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Fri 19-Aug-11 12:19:23

sorry to everyone who is still waiting to be matched or for a reply - am catching up with pm's now, and will then catch up with the thread.

PinotsKittens Fri 19-Aug-11 12:33:39

Ivy you're doing an amazing job in the middle of a very emotional time. Kudos to you.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 12:56:12

Gapants, I thought I replied? But it was quite a long way upthread now... Yes, please PM ivy and she'll sort you out with a donor smile

Ivy, there's no rush - it'll take at least a month to finish the project before we're ready to hand over so please don't stress about getting it all done in two days!

Gay40 Fri 19-Aug-11 12:58:38

Oh I just got matched! Have the address but don't know who it is. I'll be sending the wool in the next few days though x

LynnCSchreiber Fri 19-Aug-11 12:59:44

Just seen this thead, am on my way out but will PM you when I get back.

How terribly sad. Her poor family.

Gay40 Fri 19-Aug-11 13:00:25

Can someone just help me out for speed and tell me what exactly what sort/make of wool and colours I need to be getting?

TheRealMBJ Fri 19-Aug-11 13:04:42

Debbie Bliss Cashemerino DK or Rowan CashSoft DK in purples/blues/pinks

I think purple linked in the OP?

TimeForCake Fri 19-Aug-11 13:05:34

I think it's in purple's original post at the top? Should be highlighted? On my phone so I can't copy and paste and nor am I a wool expert to remember the specific details! Sorry!

Meow75 Fri 19-Aug-11 13:06:36

From PP's post early on

You want Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Double Knit or Rowan Cashsoft Double Knit - NOT the baby stuff, it's a different weight.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 13:07:47

Gay40, contact LydiaTheTattooedLady - she runs a wool shop, has the wool in stock, and is letting MNers have it for £3 a ball with free postage!!

posterofawolef Fri 19-Aug-11 13:24:35

How sad sad

I will be more then happy to knit some squares but I can't do anything fancy because I'm not good at it!

Gay40 Fri 19-Aug-11 13:27:23

I am a moron, sorry grin

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 13:46:22

No you're bloody not!!!

Posterof, plain ones are fantastic. Too many fancy ones and all that cleverness gets a bit lost!

Thumbwitch Fri 19-Aug-11 13:47:14

Awww stuffing heck, I checked this thread to see if colours were being done, saw the post by purple that said ANY colour and have just ordered a green one! Now, I see it's purples blues and pinks. sad

Does it matter? It's quite a soft-looking green...

I don't know the MN name of my linked crafter, Ivy does of course, but H of the posh horsey place in Glos, your wool is on its way. If you can perhaps work a butterfly (I don't know) that would be lovely but of course it's your choice what you do. smile

nickelbabe Fri 19-Aug-11 13:48:06

no, Thumby - it's a ny colour - it's just that Lydia has mostly blues purples and pinks in the shop. smile

I've got a greeny colour and a purple.

Thumbwitch Fri 19-Aug-11 13:50:07

I didn't order from Lydia in the end, I got it from a link that DutchOma posted blush - I thought Lydia might be a bit overwhelmed by now and might have run out. Have I been even more incompetent? I only got 1 ball...

nickelbabe Fri 19-Aug-11 14:06:35

don't worry! smile

1 ball should be fine - i think i could have got 4 squares from one ball (but that was granny squares and crochet.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 14:11:34

Any colour, any style! Apart from being a dictator over the actual type of wool, everything else is just a hint!

DutchOma Fri 19-Aug-11 14:18:54

One square finished with an I on it. Next square started with an R on it.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 14:25:45

yay, thanks Oma smile

DutchOma Fri 19-Aug-11 14:38:26

Are you still coming to Podington Pidjin? Don't forget to call in if/when you do.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 14:47:49

Oh yeah! weekend after next for VWAction - I'll find out how easy it'll be to get out, as DP works for the organisers so we'll be camped backstage and it's not easy to move cars around. Or you could come in for the day?

Hi, just wanted to let all the lovely Mnetters who have ordered wool that it will be being posted this afternoon to you. Really is so touching seeing how many people want to get involved in so many different ways, it is truly amazing x x

100years Fri 19-Aug-11 14:59:05

Thanks Lydia smile

Gay40 Fri 19-Aug-11 15:01:17

If there is anyone who wants to help but the budget won't stretch to wool, I have paid for 2 extra balls of wool which Lydia will send to you direct. I don't know how many squares you get from a ball though. Please contact her with your address x

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 15:22:34

Wow, Gay, that's a lovely thing to do! Thank you

Between 3 and 4 squares per ball

Gay40 Fri 19-Aug-11 15:27:36

Oh heck I've sent two balls to my knitter, she'll be busy

nickelbabe Fri 19-Aug-11 15:30:41

she c an always pass one on if necessary. smile

YougreatPamplemousse Fri 19-Aug-11 15:32:13

I have asked Lydia to post 1 ball to Mner VT in Nor folk smile

cherryburton Fri 19-Aug-11 15:34:55

I'm feeling a bit emotional this afternoon (my fil just died and we're going to his funeral this weekend) but I was just thinking that there's been a lot said about the "sick" society we live in - would love to show David Cameron this thread. Am really very moved by the love and goodwill on this thread and the energy of Purple and Ivy who are sorting all of this out. Really do feel honoured to be part of this.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 15:35:32

Gay, if they're different colours that's great! And don't forget I'll take any leftovers for sewing up and edging smile

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 15:36:44

<<hug>> for cherry

And wine purely for medicinal purposes

fraktious Fri 19-Aug-11 16:37:01

I would love to help but I'm far, far away. I will see if I can buy the wool here, or whether I have any, and postage takes a few days. Is it worth it?

Thumbwitch Fri 19-Aug-11 16:39:26

frak (are you the frak I know?) - I have been matched with a UK crafter and have ordered the wool online from a UK shop and had it sent directly to my matched crafter - if you still have a UK credit card you could do the same if you want?
If you do, message Ivy - she's the one matching everyone up. smile

Thumbwitch Fri 19-Aug-11 16:40:07

Cherry, sorry to hear about your FIL sad

fraktious Fri 19-Aug-11 16:42:00

I mean obviously it's worth it but is it feasible?

fraktious Fri 19-Aug-11 16:43:00

X-posted. That could work!

And yes, thumb, I am smile

IwoulddoPachacuti Fri 19-Aug-11 16:46:57

I am a rubbish knitter but would like to donate some wool. How do I go about it?

Thumbwitch Fri 19-Aug-11 16:47:43

glad to see you - haven't seen you around for a while. Do pop into my "forrin parts" chat thread if you have a mo - it's in Living Overseas. I don't want to divert this lovely thread from its purpose. smile

Off to bed now...

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 16:55:24

Fraktious, you should be able to do what Thumbwitch suggested. Also. LydiaTheTattooedLady has a wool shop and is doing a deal for MNers, perhaps you could sort things out with her?

IwoulddoPachacuti, send a PM to IvySedai who will match you up to a crafty-type. Then, contact LydiaTheTattooedLady or one of the other links on the thread to order wool and put the crafty person's address in for delivery - job did!

malteser1981 Fri 19-Aug-11 17:35:09

Still working on my 8mo DS blanket that I started at 10 weeks pregnant, so I'll definately just be donating wool. Will PM Ivy.

LatteLady Fri 19-Aug-11 18:08:08

Am happy to knit or crochet, if anyone wants to send me some wool... have some lovely square from the Knitter magazine which I would love to make up smile

KnottyLocks Fri 19-Aug-11 18:37:24

Pidj, thanks for message, my lovely.

I'm so very sorry to hear that another blanket is needed so soon.

My hook and needles are at the ready. I have a little amount of wool left over from our other blankets but will get some more.

As usual, the generosity of mumsnetters is very touching. [BigStars] all around.

all yarn ordered has been sent first class and i have proof of postage should anyones get lost in the post! x x

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 19:34:20

Oh yeah, where'd our [star] emoticon get to? MNTowers said they'd look into it, then nothing happened hmm Knotty, would you like to investigate?

Lydia, [star]!!

TimeForCake Fri 19-Aug-11 19:39:49

Hear, hear to Lydia's gold star!
Thank you Lydia for posting all our wool so generously and quickly. smile

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Fri 19-Aug-11 19:41:46

have caught up with pm's for today, any more will have to wait until tomorrow I'm afraid, because I am knackered and taking advantage of the fact that the kids are fast asleep already.

thank you all so much for your ready involvement - have just read through this and the memorial thread again and the screen is just a little blurry now.
you are all lovely.

awww guys, you're making me blush

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 20:16:30

[star] for IvySedai too

Hulababy Fri 19-Aug-11 20:34:29

Can I donate? Can't knit but can send money for wool via pp direct to a knitter if easier.

purplepidjin Fri 19-Aug-11 20:58:08

Thanks, Hulababy - if you PM IvySedai she'll match you to a crafty person. Then, you can choose a colour from either LydiaTheTattooedLady (if we haven't bought her entire stock yet!) or from one of the other websites linked on the thread and have it sent to your crafter.

happymole Fri 19-Aug-11 21:31:52

My wool has been ordered and hopefully will be sent directly (i think i did it right) to the kind person who is going to be knitting.

Really wish I could do more sad

KnottyLocks Fri 19-Aug-11 22:38:59

we have found from our previous blanket experiences that the families who receive them have been so very very touched by everyone's efforts; crafty types, donators and organisers. For them, the fact that so many have thought of them and wanted to give them what ever comfort they could has been so appreciated.

KnottyLocks Fri 19-Aug-11 22:59:43

Pidj, I've just finished my 2nd square. Do you want to start to think of a last posting date yet?

Blondeshavemorefun Fri 19-Aug-11 23:11:23

thanks for mess on fb - i shall send cash to piste x

belledechocchipcookie Fri 19-Aug-11 23:13:37

I'd like to help if that's ok?

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Thumbwitch Sat 20-Aug-11 02:29:26

Annie, do you ha ve a UK credit card? You could buy the wool that way and have it sent direct to a crafter but to get the address you need to be able to speak to Ivy privately.
Have you alternative access to MN, so that you can use the PM system? Or, are you on FB? because if you know any MNer on FB you could get them to do the PM to Ivy for you and then relay your email address to Ivy so she could email you the address for your matched crafter.

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 09:27:19

Second what Knotty said - this is a joint effort, and all contributions are equally appreciated.

Last posting Date: Friday 9th September. That's three weeks time, should be long enough?

Belle, yes please - Pm IvySedai

Annie, can you reply to messages sent to you? I can on my Blackberry... I can also instigate them but I have to be really careful about spelling the name right!

NessaRose Sat 20-Aug-11 10:02:21

Got the wool today so will get started tonight when dd is in bed. Thank you to the donor.

batteryhen Sat 20-Aug-11 10:21:17

ivy Hello smile I am not a knitter but would love to send some wool - I will PM you. It is such a shock when someone is taken so young. I can't bear to think of her familys grief, so lets hope this blanket shows her family that even those most of us never met her - we feel like we knew her, she was and is one of us xxx and will be missed.

I hope she is getting some snuggles from her angel baby xx

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism Sat 20-Aug-11 10:28:02

Have pm'd Ivy.

Although I've been here for quite a while, I never noticed these threads before, only caught it as you sent one to Blondes, and then reading back it was both awful and inspiring. It's just so sad that another blanket is needed so soon.

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 10:35:40

Lots of [star]s for everybody

Bogeyface Sat 20-Aug-11 12:34:42

To my donor (whoever you are!) I have recieved my green yarn this morning and am starting on a square after lunch. Will post pics in my profile when they are done.

LewisFan Sat 20-Aug-11 12:45:19

the wonderful lydia is knitting with wool I have purchased; I got 2 balls so should make a few squares smile

BupcakesandCunting Sat 20-Aug-11 14:10:40

Right, sorry to be total pain but...

I've just been down to pick my wool up from the haberdasher's and the label says "CashSoft Baby DK" even though the lady assured me that this is the right stuff. I'm just looking now in MIL's Rowan booklet and I can't find one that says just "DK", there's Pima Cotton DK, Baby DK, Aran DK... I was going to post it to my crafter this afternoon but don't want to if it's going to be of no use. When I ordered it on thursday, it defintely said "Cashsoft DK" on the wool sample the lady showed me...

Sorry for being dense.

Thumbwitch Sat 20-Aug-11 14:18:33

Buppers - it's the wrong one. If you click on the link that DutchOma has on her post, it takes you straight to the right stuff. It's not the baby one. sad

Thumbwitch Sat 20-Aug-11 14:19:55

here you are - saves you trawling back for it!

Or get it through Lydia - she's doing it cheaper and free postage.

BupcakesandCunting Sat 20-Aug-11 14:22:02

Oh bollocks. It's a bleedin' minefield, this knitting malarkey. grin

Nevermind, I'll give my ball to MIL and get her to do me a tea cosy out of it or summat. I'll contact Lydia. Thanks Thumb smile

Hi all, this is so sad that it needs to be done. I knew magic from the ttc/pg after mc threads and would love to take part.

I've pm'd lydia about ordering wool...but am also happy to be matched with a donor and knit a few more squares if it's needed...will pm you ivy

This is really uplifting at such a sad time, to see so many people...and lots of you not even knowing magic...willing to give up their time and money to help with a project like this.

100years Sat 20-Aug-11 14:22:32

My wool arrived this morning smile

I've made one square so far. Will have a go at a different one later or tomorrow.

I have started the second square out of the ball I was sent a while ago. I hope to get them done today/tomorrow and get them posted at the end of the month

nickelbabe Sat 20-Aug-11 14:35:59

just a bump for newcomers:
lydiathetattooedlady is selling the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK at £3.00 per ball to MNers.
She'll accept PMs.

nickelbabe Sat 20-Aug-11 14:36:18

are they still 6" squares pidj?

100years Sat 20-Aug-11 14:46:54

Yes they are still 6" I know I'm not pidj, but thought I would answer your question.

nickelbabe Sat 20-Aug-11 14:50:20

thanks! it didn't have to be pidj , just someone who knows, and you do, so you'll do grin

nickelbabe Sat 20-Aug-11 14:50:45

yeah, and i've just noticed it does say that in the OP blush

100years Sat 20-Aug-11 14:54:00

It's OK, it's nice to get the reassurance that it's right. smile

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 15:04:12

We're nearly 300 posts in, who cares about the op?! grin

Yer lady's wrong, Buppy, they're different weights - go in armed with some facts and they should refund you as it was mis-sold... Otherwise, get MIL to make you a soft and snuggly slouchy hat for the winter smile

Or, put your business Lydia's way as she's been so generous with her livelihood!

LCRLCR Sat 20-Aug-11 15:05:20

Sad sad news. My sister-in-law is a RL friend of Magic's, she is also a twin mum. If anyone knows funeral details, please could you PM me?

BupcakesandCunting Sat 20-Aug-11 15:05:50

I will just give it to MIL. She likes a nice wool. grin

I've PMd Lydia. Hopefully I can buy some from her and I will pay her P&P, wouldn't hear of not paying it.

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 15:09:17

LCR, there's a condolence thread as well - you're more than welcome here but might get more relevant information there sad

Buppy, it's a lovely present envy

<pidj foresees much bun-slinging between Buppy and Lydia>

<clutches pearls>

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs Sat 20-Aug-11 15:20:05

The lovelyLydia, that's how she should be known from now on, is even going to knit my squares for me.

100years Sat 20-Aug-11 15:22:10

I've put a pic on my profile of the square I have made if anyone wants to see it. Obviously you don't have to. Do people usually upload the pics of squares they have made?

Hulababy Sat 20-Aug-11 15:22:34

Thanks. Away for weekend so will pm when home.

Thumbwitch Sat 20-Aug-11 15:27:40

LCR - if you PM Lia66, she says on here that she knew Magic and her family so she might be able to tell you as well.

BupcakesandCunting Sat 20-Aug-11 15:29:22

Your square is lovely, 100years.

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 15:35:58

skinnymuffin Sat 20-Aug-11 15:59:00

Lydia is sorting me out with two lovely balls of wool, one for me and one for C in Gloucestershire. Should be able to get started next week smile

I just need to see my mum now and get a reminder about how to cast on and off, hopefully the inbetween part I can cope with blush

Meow75 Sat 20-Aug-11 15:59:15

I also love your square, 100 years. Beautiful.

I'm still waiting for my wool in the post; I despair at how challenging Royal Mail find it getting to the Eastern Fens sometimes. sad I'm ITCHING to get started!!

skinnymuffin Sat 20-Aug-11 16:12:42

Lovely square 100 smile

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sat 20-Aug-11 17:21:58

sorry if anyone has been waiting for a reply from me, I've been out all day, sitting in the passengerseat of our car, so I've managed to do a couple of squares, but haven't managed to reply to pm's.
will get on it now then catch up with the tread.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sat 20-Aug-11 18:56:13

i Know only have purple or pink left yarn wise, and also if you've messaged me and i havent got back to you, can you send me a message i managed to delete a message from fiesty by mistake and hoping i havent done the same to anyone else x x

lovely squares 100 and ivy x

purplepidjin Sat 20-Aug-11 21:09:24

Ooh pretty!!

Last time, I ended up absolutely swamped with generosity. To make a reasonable sixed blanket I need an absolute maximum of 120 squares (6'x5') any more and it's just too big to handle...

drcrab Sat 20-Aug-11 21:14:14

I've just read about this - I don't know Magic but this is so sad. I can't knit or crochet (the last time I had to do anything remotely related to this, my grandmother did it for me, and got me an A hahah.). I can donate wool. I will pm lydia and ivy. this is so sad.

100years Sat 20-Aug-11 21:52:45

Lovely squares Ivy smile

drcrab Sat 20-Aug-11 22:03:58

Just when I tried to PM, MN went offline. And now I'm bf-ing DS and on my phone. Can ivy and Lydia PM me please so that I can reply? I'd like to donate some wool. If ivy can match me with a knitter I wil send some wool via lydia's shop. Thank you.

muddyangels123nomoreHPforme Sat 20-Aug-11 22:41:24

I have ordered the wool from Amazon.
I will send it on to my crafter when it arrives.

Mumsnet at it's best!grin

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Thumbwitch Sat 20-Aug-11 23:49:08

Annie - this is the wool but you can get it from Lydia if you want, she only has pink and purple left now.

You still won't be able to get the details of any other crafter to send it to unless you have a means of off-board communication though. If I PM you, can you reply? If you reply with your email address I'll send it straight through to Ivy and then delete the message so you're safe.

PisteysInManhatten Sun 21-Aug-11 01:40:37

Someone in Hampshire is going to get Ballard Blue from me in the next couple of days... thank you for knitting it xx

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sun 21-Aug-11 05:36:20

Purple, if we get more, and considering the amazing response it is likely, what would you think about splitting them in 3 and making a blanket for each of the girls to remember their mummy by?
I'll be happy to help with the assembly.

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 06:58:14

<pricks up ears> There's another Hampshire bod? <waves>

If anyone down here fancies meeting up to work on this, I work shifts and can meet for coffee - there's a lovely department store in Winchester that sells the wool and has a coffee shop and i'm crap and cant' remember the name of it

Three blankets could be cool, but I'll need all the squares before I can start...

KnottyLocks Sun 21-Aug-11 07:06:41

Pidj, I'm arranging the Blondes blanket and Edgar quilt meet for September time. Maybe we could do a bit of blanket work then?

I'll PM you sometime tomorrow with dates- have family here at the mo.

LaVitaBellissima Sun 21-Aug-11 07:29:15

I've PM'd Ivy & Lydia as I would love to donate some wool.

I also have twins and remember Magic from the antenatal twins thread, my heart is breaking for her family, and is so touched by this thread sad

I can't wait to see the beautiful finished blanket smile

KnottyLocks Sun 21-Aug-11 07:36:30

Ivy, I know I've got some more wool coming but I can do more if you need me too as we seem to have quite a few people willing to send wool.

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 07:57:53

Thanks knotty. I know pistey is up for some knitting when she gets back, that's where I got the idea - she's out of practice and I think it's about time I learned

I can also do squares especially as I will have leftovers. If we organise a meet it gives people a chance to use different colors

ivy i was thinking the exact same thing last night about making a blanket each for the girls, after reading the maximum amount of squares needed!
As a guide you can get 3 minimum per ball, mnetters who have contacted me altogether will make at least 72 of these squares. Obviously depending on how you make them and the amount of yarn used this could be up to 96 squares.
This also doesnt include the other mnetters who i am currently talking to about yarn. Everyones generousity is amazing.
purplepidjin Im not very good with the uk map where abouts is hampshire? Im a knitter not a great crocheter but if you need help constructing blankets i can help?! ive got a couple of squares already done, a butterfly one and im attempting a spider web pattern x x

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 09:07:38

Well we've got an eqivalent blanket to those already done just from what you've sold shock

One eacg sounds like the way to go

Hampshire is slap bang in the middle of the south coast

ooh ive just googled hampshire thats a long way from me! Let me know if i cn help constructing one. Im knitting for 3 mnetters and will have about 24 when ive finished x

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 09:12:49

Perhaps you could do one and either I'll do two or DutchOma could do one?

i would love to do one thank you x x

Muser Sun 21-Aug-11 09:23:45

If we're going to do 3 blankets I can knit all my wool and make 3 squares. Mine won't be fancy squares, I was thinking just a basic seed stitch as my skills are either that, plain or a rib. And I'm guessing ribbed won't stitch together that well.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sun 21-Aug-11 09:23:50

I would happily do one too, but if you are covered on that, it's ok.

I only managed two squares from the last ball but that was tightly done. I am crocheting for a couple of people too and will have at least ten if not fifteen squares when I have done them all.

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 09:34:19

Muser ribbed is fine. The way I do it, I match each square to it's neighbours. That way, it looks symmetrical anal retentive and every square lies flat and looks the same size despite discrepancied

Ivy, you're in. I'm deep south, sounds like lydia's in the far north so maybe 3 meet ups in different places?

DutchOma Sun 21-Aug-11 09:52:43

I have done three squares out of a ball I bought and have wool for half a square left over. I am (I think) waiting for one or two balls to come, I need another ball to do the letters and 8, but can do other ones too if you need me. I can knit a ball in a day, if pushed and with a following wind, so 9th September is a lifetime away (in the life of a ball of wool that is)

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 10:02:17

I can bring more wool to Action if you like, Oma?

drcrab Sun 21-Aug-11 10:03:38

I've PMed Ivy and Lydia - I'd like to donate some wool too. x

toomuchteaching Sun 21-Aug-11 10:27:43

If we're going to do three blankets I'm happy to donate more wool, I think that would be lovely. I only sent my crafter one ball (I know nothing about these things!) and have no idea whether she's keen for more... DaisySteiner if you do want more just say. Or Ivy if there's a crafter who needs more please match me again. I'll PM you.

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 10:31:54

I'll be at a car show near Oma from the 2nd sept. How about we bring the deadline forward to then? Oma and I can sort through how many squares we've got then we'll let you know if we need more?

Fro experience, we'll be absolutely swamped in woolly generosity [star] and [tear in eye]

Tsil Sun 21-Aug-11 10:37:44

I've sent 2 balls of wool to a lovely knitter in a horsey place on a road beginning with M, I hope it gets to you ok and the colours are ok.

Sorry it has taken a few days to be posted.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sun 21-Aug-11 11:28:17

Purple, I am in east devon.

Will get on all the pm's in a minute, just need to do a few things around the house first..

Gay40 Sun 21-Aug-11 12:14:30

Hello to my knitter in Chipping Norton whoever you are, hope you get your wool soon x

thelittlefriend Sun 21-Aug-11 12:32:51

To my knitter in Dorset, road name beginning with M. I promise to get your wool sent as soon as it arrives here! I should have got it send straight to you, silly mistake. Sorry if you're itching to get knitting! x

NunTheWiser Sun 21-Aug-11 12:34:29

I've sent you a PM Ivy and I'll be knitting a square. Who do I send it to?

DutchOma Sun 21-Aug-11 12:51:49

Yes, yes to woolly meetings on 2nd September. Would it be at all possible to organise transport to somewhere nice for dh who cannot get very far without wheels, but has a disabled badge to get near to things?

DutchOma Sun 21-Aug-11 12:53:55

I don't mind how much wool I have later, but I want would like please some wool now, so I can finish off the letters.

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 12:57:30

I'll be in the camper and probably won't be able to get it off site once we're on (dp will be working at the show so the bus will be trapped backstage) I was hoping to walk down the lane to meet you... It's too expensive to bring the bug all that way even though I'm dying to show it!

Pm me or I'll pm you when I get home, Oma

gapants Sun 21-Aug-11 13:29:31

I am just waiting on my wool, and am raring to go.

Quick question, I will knit my squares, but was thinking of doing a couple maybe in a waffle stitch like this--
would that be OK? If not I will just do seed stitch. The squares people have posted are beautiful.

gapants Sun 21-Aug-11 13:30:38

also here is a link to some square patterns on Ravelry--

gapants Sun 21-Aug-11 13:32:25

nope that is wrong--sorry!

gapants Sun 21-Aug-11 13:32:56
StickThemWithThePointyEnd Sun 21-Aug-11 13:35:10

wafflestitch is lovely. - wrong link, though? confused

Purple, would it be ok to use some different yarn for embroidery/decoration? I have some beautiful glittery pink and purple mohair/wool blend that would make lovely flowers, and some ribbony wool blend in green/light green/gold and purple/blue/pink/red/gold for some emboidery.....

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 13:38:11

Gapants, as long as it's roughly 6" on most of the sides it'll be used and appreciated

To everyone: my biggest headache is not colour, pattern, design, or how many each person does. It's making sure that every single square and (usable sized) scrap of wool goes to something for the family. If I have wool left over, I'll make teddies. Leftover squares can be turned into cushion cover. Your contributions will be used for their intended purpose

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 13:39:47

Ivy, if it'll look the same as the rest of the blanket in 10 years time, go for it grin

Thumbwitch Sun 21-Aug-11 14:23:45

I made a blanket for DS while I was pg in a sort of double moss stitch but not really because it was like single moss stitch but doing K2, P2 instead of K1, P1 and double moss stitch is more complicated than that. Soooo I have no idea if my knit pattern even has a real name but it ended up looking a little like a waffle blanket, which was the idea, and is a very pretty pattern, if anyone want to give that a try. smile

Thumbwitch Sun 21-Aug-11 14:27:07

Sorry, didn't explain that very well - first row was K2, P2...., 2nd row was P2, K2 (like rib)...... then P2, K2..... and K2, P2......
Gave alternating blocks of 4 stitches, to give the waffly look. Only in diagonal. But still very pretty. smile

purplepidjin Sun 21-Aug-11 14:36:10

Is this the longest thread in Mn history to stay on topic? I like the diagonal waffle idea

Iirc the simplest way to knit a square is to cast on 1 then increase 1 stitch each end per row until you get 2 sides 6" lomg, then decrease 1 stitch each end til you run out of stitches

happymole Sun 21-Aug-11 14:43:18

My knitter in Oxford, hopefully you will receive the wool soon smile

gapants Sun 21-Aug-11 14:56:10

thanks thumbwitch i might have a go at that with some spare wool as a practice.

drcrab Sun 21-Aug-11 16:04:48

hello knitter in a close up north that has the name of a metal! I've asked Lydia to send 2 balls of wool to you. Thank you for doing this - I look forward to seeing the finished blanket! xx

Hi everyone, I have come across this website 6"Squares

It's a free resource and has knit and crochet patterns if anyones looking for a pattern to follow.

(they are free patterns but they do ask if people are willing to also make squares for them/make donations.)

LaVitaBellissima Sun 21-Aug-11 19:50:35

Ivy I've PM'd you, Lydia still has some wool which I would love to send to someone to knit with, if there is anyone still unmatched.

Failing that I could send it to Purplepidjin to use to link everything together?

TulipsfromAmsterdam Sun 21-Aug-11 20:00:47

Would like to help and knit a square if it's not too late to offer.

I just thought LaVitaBellisima i could be your knitter as i'll be putting one of the blankets together? Just drop me a message either way x x

TulipsfromAmsterdam Sun 21-Aug-11 20:08:20

Tried to pm Ivy to be added to list but don't seem to be able to - can anyone advise? Thanks

TulipsfromAmsterdam Sun 21-Aug-11 20:15:50

Please ignore previous message - sorted now

Am just about to order my wool. I found this link, don't know if it has been mentioned (I couldn't see it anywhere, apologies if it's a duplicate), it has a nice rav link to a mitred square amongst other patterns. It might be a bit tricky for beginners but it's handy since you can just knit until it's the right size (and I'm not that good at getting gague so perfect for me).

Much love to all the family, my heart goes out to you

LaVitaBellissima Sun 21-Aug-11 20:53:32

Hello Gay40.

Mumwithadragontattoo Sun 21-Aug-11 22:29:32

Can I add my voice to how wonderful Lydia is. She has provided a first rate service.

I have finished square number 1 (just a plain knitted one I'm afraid) and will get cracking on another tomorrow.

I am in Hampshire if that helps anyone. Can't knit, but can provide wool or make deliveries if needed. I am off work until schools go back so time is on my side atm too.

I love and hate these threads at the same time if that makes sense to anyone. sad

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 08:11:19

PM sent

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 08:11:31

I have two patterns I know I can make (excluding the bog standard granny square) and the challenge for me is finding ones I like, think I can do and are either the right size or can be the right size with some fiddling. My aspirations are much much a little higher than my ability at the moment!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 08:42:08

soupdragon I went to the Blanket category on Ravelry, refined by Free and Crochet, and then just looked through everything, keeping tabs open for all the patterns that I liked, then looking through them again to see if they are what I am looking for.
size wise, you can increase any square to the size you need quite easily if you just carry on doing what you have been doing.

having said that, I've ended up with ruffles rather than a square on the pattern I tried yesterday.. hmm

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 10:19:28

I have my address but is there a quick link to what I need to buy and where from?

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 10:27:39

Have PMed Lydia re wool.

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 10:36:03

I don''t know if it's the same for knitting, but there are some lovely crochet dish cloths blush which are about the right size? People seem to get everso creative with their washing up?!

cloudpuff Mon 22-Aug-11 10:38:34

What a horrible thing to happen.
I can crochet as many squares as needed as I'm not working at the moment but funds are mega tight at the moment for the same reason.
Is there somewhere I need to pm my address to or will it be saved from the Edgar blanket.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 10:46:26

cloudpuff pm me, please, then I'll match you up.

I have just received my wool from my donor - thank you.

It is Debbie Bliss Cashmerino in Raspberry Pink, ordered from Laughing Hens by someone with a hotmail address starting with an a. I am in Wales. If you sent me this wool could you PM me then I can send you a pic when I have finished the squares?

nickelbabe Mon 22-Aug-11 11:08:43

I've done my 2 squares.
I've put bobbles into them, so that it looks like little "8 balls"

Here's a picture

pidj - what you were saying earlier about matching squares to their neighbour- you'll see when you received them, so if someone could make a sqaure that starts at 5" and finishes at 6" that would be perfect! blush
(i measured it and everything, but it started out too wide )

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 11:23:03

Ooh I love that pink, Jemima!!

Nickel, they'll stretch top accomodate, don't panic!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 11:30:23

lovely squares, nickel

purple if I can't manage to get this stupid square to unruffle, do you want me to just make sure all sides are 6" and then stretch it in, or undo it and start again?

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 11:35:07

I have just arranged for 2 balls of wool to go to a knitter (JC) in Northants via the MNetter Lydia. One is pink, one green. Hope that is ok.

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 11:37:32

Oh, I have a Ravely search for "squares" open permanently grin I made a lovely one with a raised dragonfly on it but 1) it was so SO difficult 2) mine appears to be somewhat less than square and 3) I didn't want to risk it with the wool I was sent by TimeForCake (raspberry and White)

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 11:46:44

Ivy, I'm not the one who's going to have to attach it to the others, remember? grin

Soupie, your dragonfly was gorgeous but must have taken yonks!!

I am in awe at the idea of a dragonfly!

Mine are much simpler I'm afraid, I think for Edgar's blanket I did one basketweave and one double moss stitch. I have started a double moss stitch one and will either do basketweave (because I like it) or cable for the other.

Do you have enough crafters for your donors Ivy? If you don't I could do another ball from another donor. I have a long wait at the paediatrician's with DS2 this afternoon and so will have finished the first square quite easily by tonight, possibly even the second!

TimeForCake Mon 22-Aug-11 12:05:16

Ahhh Soup, I trust your judgement! Do as you please with the wool, it will be infinitely better than anything I could do. I'll be here to provide brew or wine for you! smile

Hi everyone! Just to let you know i am out of wool!. You very generous mnetters have brought 40 balls of yarn from me which is the equivalent of 120-160 squares!
I am about to start my 3rd square, i swill hopefully get quite a few done here in the shop as i knit all day!
All those who have placed orders over the weekend will have their yarn sent out today x x

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 12:31:41

No, PurpleP, the dragonfly square on Ravelry was gorgeous. Mine was rather less so. I'm glad I tried it though.

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 12:34:01

Now, the children have gone to Spain for a week and I think i shall retire to the garden with a deckchair, my crochet kit and my iPad which has the patterns on smile

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 12:57:41

*Shut up SoupDragon". I am right. You will not argue.

OMG, Lydia, these blankets are going to be enormous! shock

That's three blankets of 2'6"x4' JUST FROM WHAT YOU'VE SOLD so not counting shock

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 12:58:02

Oops, not counting other sources shock

frazzledblob Mon 22-Aug-11 13:05:45

SoupDragon I am so envy at sitting in the garden with crochet, ipad and no kids grin

Is it too late to sign up? Its so sad to read of another family experiencing such a tragic loss sad

How many squares are you all getting from a ball?

I know last time I made 2 squares then weighed what was left of the ball and there wasn't quite enough to make another. But Lydia says that 40 balls = 120 - 160 squares? confused I can see how 2 balls would make 5 squares as you could use the leftovers from both balls to make another, but how do you get to 160?

Jackaroo Mon 22-Aug-11 13:20:01

It would be amazing if it ended up being 3 blankets - one for each child? If it doesn't work out that way it doesn't matter, sounds like a lot of knitting all around!

Can I say thank you to Lydia here for putting up with the faff that is an international credit card transaction :-) She's ace.

GalaxyWeaver Mon 22-Aug-11 13:21:52

those of us who've been matched to donors.. how long should we wait for our wool before we say something?

TimeForCake Mon 22-Aug-11 13:24:48

Oh well, if your kids are away and you're enjoying relaxing in your garden Soup, you can make your own tea! grin wink

nickelbabe Mon 22-Aug-11 13:25:03

it depends how much wool each square uses, but you shuld get 3-4 squares from one ball.
you might get less if you're knitting a square, because it uses more wool.

Ah, maybe its because mine are knitted. I'm sure I only got 2 last time.

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 13:41:33

<wave> at Frazzled - I've always got time to meet you for coffee if you want to help with construction? [star]

Jackaroo, we've already decided to do three blankets, each put together by a different MNer, because of the sheer amount of generosity on this thread!

Galaxy, if you know who your donor is, get in touch then you can swap pictures of your joint squares smile

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 14:11:15

<<slinks off to kitchen to put own kettle on>>

3 blankets for 3 children sounds perfect. I may well end up buying some wool of my own in addition to the ones I was sent, depending how it goes.

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 14:15:26

Not sure who the knitter is I am matched too. But I was matched this morning and have ordered two balls from day. She is a star and already has them packaged and labelled and ready to send out later.

Wasn't sure on any deadlines so wanted to do it asap.

mistlethrush Mon 22-Aug-11 14:15:55

Just seen this - can knit squares again (I got 3 from last ball btw) - if any wool providers, that would be great....

envy at soupdragon! Thank fully mine are at nursery today but they do come with me two days a week if DH is working.
The estimate is based roughly on how they're knitted. I am also using every scrap so there will be some striped ones in there too!
jackaroo thank you for the positive feedback! Im just sorry i didnt realise sooner that i cant use card machine and phone at same time!
Im knitting for 3 donors and will put pictures up asand when they are finished! x x

OOh just seen the comments from hula you are more than welcome! x x

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 14:21:14

<smug pidjie has no dcs>

<smug pidjie realises she's not dressed yet and still has to go get cake and cake pop supplies for DNephew's birthday on Friday, as well as finish 2 pairs of school trousers for an order, as well as packing and posting off the houdini suit for the previous order>

<smug pidjie realises that time is a precious and finite resource...>

skinnymuffin Mon 22-Aug-11 15:08:31

Galaxy - about how long should you wait for your donated wool before you say something -

I've ordered wool from Lydia, one for me and one for a crafter in Gloucestershire. She's posting both to me today, then I will re-post the donated ball, as I didn't want Lydia to bear the cost of double postage IYSWIM.

So, I reckon my crafter should have their wool by Weds/Thurs, I hope that's not too long. I'm itching to get started myself!

In the meantime I'm practising as I'm hardly an expert blush

<Returns to 18 month old scarf, wonders if it will be finished in time for Christmas...>

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 15:24:51

So just because I have been asked by a few people: If you are a donor and would be ok with your crafter knowing who you are, or if you are a crafter and would be ok with your donor knowing who you are, let me know. I have been asked by a couple of people to keep them anonymous, but I could pm those of you your matches if both parties are ok with it <thinks of new category on spreadsheet>

drcrab Mon 22-Aug-11 15:39:08

ivy I'm happy for the crafter to know it was me (although I think Lydia would have indicated that in her post!!)

Knitter who lives in York (an address that has the name of a metal in it): 2 balls of pink and purple were sent out today!smile

Thumbwitch Mon 22-Aug-11 15:47:40

Ivy, I'm more than happy for my crafter to know who I am smile
Think I've already indicated who I was matched with but she may not want me to know her posting name, which is fair enough smile
just in case she missed it the first time, H in the horsey place who is getting a ball of green wool, hope you can work me a butterfly! don't worry if not though.

lia66 Mon 22-Aug-11 16:13:04

I have ordered 2 balls but my very limited knitting skills may not be up to my enthusiasm so if anyone would like an extra ball, pm me and i'll pass it on.

3 blankets is so fantastic, I wonder if we could have one initial on each, I B and X and perhaps R on one of the blankets for magic's angel dd.

Perhaps a little presumptious of me to suggest blush don't want to offend anyone.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 16:13:25

does anyone know if there is a way to filter through pm's? <swamped>

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 16:14:03

lia I think dutchoma is making lettered squares smile

Thumbwitch Mon 22-Aug-11 16:16:22

Don't think so Ivy, sorry!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 16:18:33

oh well, I think I manually found what I was looking for.. must get the kids ready to go out now, but will be back online later..

NessaRose Mon 22-Aug-11 16:23:18

One square done and another half way finished.
I would love to put up photo's but I don't know how to. blush

frazzledblob Mon 22-Aug-11 16:26:36

pidjie I could always loan you a child or two?! any excuse to break the tag team that is a 2yr old refusing to sleep at night and a 6yr old that talks non stop all day long grin

more than happy to meet for cake and crochet again, when are you looking to start contstruction? I am back to work 5th september sad

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 16:38:23

Lia, all suggestions are very welcome and personalising the blankets to each child is a brilliant idea - perhaps we could have an R on each one?

Frazzled, pm me your free times. If you want to meet sooner in the park or somewhere so you've got an adult to talk to, let me know. I'm good at chatterbox 6yo's!

mistlethrush Mon 22-Aug-11 16:45:28

frazzled, I can parcel force you another 6 yo and the two can talk at each other at full volume all day? Not sure whether it would help, but it would certainly make life quieter in my house!

100years Mon 22-Aug-11 17:02:44

Have put up the pics of the other 2 squares I have now done on my profile.

That's 3 so far.

Great stuff to the others who have done some so far.

DutchOma Mon 22-Aug-11 17:12:32

Yes, I have done 3 letters, I, R and B. I was thinking that rather than have an 8 on a square, we should have an M for Mummy. After all, 8 has meaning for (some of) us, but probably not for the children. If there are indeed three balls coming to me then I should have 12 to 14 squares, then three Rs, three Ms and three of whatever the children are called, but one letter of each, so that the girl has her own blanket. Maybe three As, as I understand that is dad's name, or maybe three Ds for daddy. Whatever makes the most sense to the children, what do you think? I can post to Purple and Pidjin, if I am to construct one of the blankets

frazzledblob Mon 22-Aug-11 17:16:40

mistlethrush, thanks for the kind offer.

I will however have to decline on the basis that I am sure two 6 yr olds will not cancel each other out in the volume stakes and I am sure that some health and safety law would be breeched.

I barely get much crochet done with one DC asking to help, how do you do that, can I touch this, whats that for......

100years I am loving your squares smile The purple colour is lovely.

Pidj I will have a think about times and PM you later. Going to try and wear out the two yr old in the swimming pool so I can spend the evening browsing patterns smile

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 17:38:40

Oma, I volunteered you in your absence, however Ivy volunteered herself so you're off the hook grin

I think we need one each of I, A and X. Then we need three R's - one for each blanket. Possibly some Mummy and Daddy squares too?

Just to let you know all yarn paid for has been posted this afternoon! Allo yarn has been sent with proof of postage. Im 99.9% sure ive not messed this up, but if anyone wants to check and message me postcodes i can check tomorrow they've all been sent! x x

lia66 Mon 22-Aug-11 18:03:10

Aww now I'm crying again sad personalised with m and d too. i soo wish we didn't have to do this.

You are all lovely. x

lia66 Mon 22-Aug-11 18:03:41

sorry meant to say what a lovely suggestion and r on each one

As I said further up, I am happy for my wool donor to know who I am.

I am halfway through my first square (paediatrician was running on time so I didn't have too long to wait, but I got some done in the park afterwards).

I have looked up the dragonfly on ravelry and am thinking about giving it a go. If it goes horribly wrong I can always unpick it and do basketweave instead!

toomuchteaching Mon 22-Aug-11 19:04:32

Just to check I is the oldest girl, B and X are the twins and R is the baby magic lost. I don't think we've mentioned any Bs. A is dad but I also think M&D are nice. The 8 does refer to an actual magic 8 ball in their house but as a non-knitter I'll leave it to you crafty types. We also know I very much likes her pink, Peppa Pig, dancing, typical 4 year old stuff. And they recently went to visit a lavender farm, I don't know if lavender flowers are possible.

Thanks again to the wonderful lydia and all you knitters.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Mon 22-Aug-11 19:37:22

I was thinking it may be easier for the girls to know what we meant if we could work the whole words Mum and Dad rather than M and D, but I might be wrong.
I managed to fix the glittery flower square, maybe that one should be for I's blanket..

DutchOma Mon 22-Aug-11 19:38:35

If I'm not sewing then there is not the urgent need to get together in September. Sad as I will be not to see you....

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 19:50:24

Yes to all the decorated ones being for the older girl - 6mo twins will be at the chewing stage shortly (if they're not already??)

Aw, I was looking forward to it for it's own sake, Oma sad

Maybe next year for one of the smaller shows? Easier for me to get in and out because I'll be camped in the pits, not an enclosed backstage area...

DutchOma Mon 22-Aug-11 19:52:11

Well, yes, so was I...sad

thelittlefriend Mon 22-Aug-11 20:47:55

I think my crafter & I have worked out we've been matched to each other - happy to be in the "not anonymous" column on your spreadsheet Ivy!

Hulababy Mon 22-Aug-11 21:15:54

Ivy - I am happy to not be anonymous to my crafter or on here.

gapants Mon 22-Aug-11 21:30:14

Oh yes, if you have managed to match me Ivy I am not fussed for my identity to be revealed. Thank you.

purplepidjin Mon 22-Aug-11 21:37:08

Everyone knows me hmm so I'm happy to lose my anonymity

I'm more googlable under this name than my real one anyhow!

SoupDragon Mon 22-Aug-11 21:42:27

So, Square no.1 it's actually the raspberry pink colour but i only had my iPhone to hand and it has no flash smile

gapants Mon 22-Aug-11 21:46:23

That is so pretty soupdragon clever!

TimeForCake Mon 22-Aug-11 22:14:32

Oh Soup! That is just beautiful! Thank you for making 'our' first square look so amazing! [proud emoticon] You're very talented and that will look wonderful on one of the blankets.
Don't know about anyone else, but this pairing up idea is lovely. Thanks again Ivy for organising that. smile

Gay40 Mon 22-Aug-11 22:28:19

I'd like to know who I was matched with, but also I don't mind if she'd rather keep quiet.

Moanna Mon 22-Aug-11 23:17:11

Just bookmarking smile

Can't wait to get started....

Aww it's so sad, I didn't know Magic, but what a terrible thing to happen. sad

I can crochet and will pm LydiaTheTattooedLady and see if she has any wool left, and will happily crochet some. Have tried my local yarn shop but they only do the baby one. ParcelPiste and I were chatting on another thread about her missions around London just recently.

You are all truly marvellous.

Thumbwitch Tue 23-Aug-11 00:55:29

BearGrylls, if LYdia hasn't any left, this place does it

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism Tue 23-Aug-11 02:12:26

Ivy - I'm quite happy for my crafter to know my identity too <pulls off mask>.

You know what this thread has done? Inspired me to buy a magazine on how to knit - complete with needles and yarn.

Am in Australia so not much use - but hopefully once we return I can join in as a crafter.

PisteysInManhatten Tue 23-Aug-11 03:36:50

Hello Bear.... This is a good place too x

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 06:59:36

I have been matched with Pistey. smile

That's a funny coincidence as we've spent so much time working on the last few blankets and how to get the blankets and the Edgar quilt to their new homes. I'm normally the one telling Pistey what to get, who to send to and where and when to collect.

Pistey my lovely, I shall do my very bestest.

Blondeshavemorefun Tue 23-Aug-11 07:30:47

pisty - you are my wool buyer as i cock things up - who are you sending to and how do you want me to pay you for it? cheq a before as if i paypal then mr piste gains the money lol

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 07:37:40

Blondes, I think I'm crafting for both of you. smile

DairyBeetle Tue 23-Aug-11 10:10:54

I'm happy to be revealed smile Just picking up some knitting tips from my sister (I'm a bit out of practice!) and hopefully will have wool waiting for me when I get home so can get knitting this weekend.

Everytime I check this thread it makes me happy to see so many people working together to do something so lovely, it's just a shame it's because of something so sad.

Narketta Tue 23-Aug-11 10:20:15

I'm also happy to be revealed to my donorsmile

pinkthechaffinch Tue 23-Aug-11 10:21:26

I haven't received my wool yet but will get knitting straight away when it arrives.

Post is really dodgy up my way at the moment sad

Thanks Pistey and Thumbwitch for suggestions, haven't heard from Lydia yet so might just order some so I can get cracking. There's one more shop locally I can try, but can't get there till tomorrow.

SoupDragon Tue 23-Aug-11 10:31:17

Thakn you for your kind comments about my first attempt!

I am very excited about Square Two.

TadlowDogIncident Tue 23-Aug-11 10:34:15

Knitter who lives in Whitestone, I've posted a ball of blue wool today.

happymole Tue 23-Aug-11 10:49:00

Knitter from Oxford i sent a purple ball, hopefully it has arrived or will arrive soon

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Tue 23-Aug-11 10:49:16

my third square.

crafters - could you pm me if you have received your wool, please, so I can mark it off on my spreadsheet? smile

soupdragon that is really pretty!

Meow75 Tue 23-Aug-11 10:52:10

Ivy, I've just logged on to say I'm still waiting for mine. ROYAL MAIL!!! angry, but hopefully when I get back from shopping it'll be here. Post arrives lunchtime here in the remote Fenland!!!

Which of the two do you think would be best for crochet? Or are they much of a muchness?

I have finished two squares (well I still need to block them), one in double moss stitch and one with a dragonfly on. Pictures are on my profile.

Am now going to weigh the ball to see if I have enough left for another.

Narketta Tue 23-Aug-11 11:26:28

Hi Tadlow I'm your crafter. smile I'll let you know when my wool's arrived and put a pic on my profile of the finished squares.

I'm just on my 4th square now, still trying to work out how to upload pictures to here from phone gah! I have also charted a 'mum' square i will let you know how i get on as my charts dont always work out!
Im so inspired by the crochet squares i am going to have an attempt at one following a you tube video! My mum is a beautiful crocheter (is that a word?!) but neither of us has patience with the other to enable her to teach me!
x x

I have just weighed my ball and I have 15g left (out of 50g) so I am going to risk making another square. Basketweave this time I think. I'm going to try on 4mm needles instead of 4.5mm (which I normally use to get the right tension) and then block it out to 6x6" to see if this makes the wool stretch to a third.

Soup that square is fab!

And yours is fab too Ivy

I am very jealous, I can knit but am not very good at crochet.

TadlowDogIncident Tue 23-Aug-11 11:51:03

Hi Narketta, I'll look forward to it! Very envious of all these people who can do clever crafty things.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Tue 23-Aug-11 12:10:26

I think when I block them the pink mohair should settle down a bit and become less fluffy.

lydia, thanks for the parcel, I love the colours.

NessaRose Tue 23-Aug-11 12:11:39

Gay40 we were matched. smile
The wool is a great coulor. 2 squares done now.

SoupDragon Tue 23-Aug-11 12:20:10

All the squares are gorgeous smile

jemima, I can't knit but i did teach myself to crochet in July!

thelittlefriend Tue 23-Aug-11 12:34:12

Pinkthechaffinch your wool arrived with me today and was in the post to you an hour later! 1st class so I hope you get it tomorrow.

jemima that dragonfly is great, well done.

gapants Tue 23-Aug-11 12:52:10

wow, these squares are lovely. I am practising the dragin fly one now.

ivy have you managed to match me, no wool has arrived as yet? Thank you for taking this matching business on, it must be a mammoth job.

Thumbwitch Tue 23-Aug-11 13:02:19

All the squares that are shown are lovely! They're going to be beautiful blankets. smile

posterofawolef Tue 23-Aug-11 13:18:38

Wow lots of work done so far. I am happy to be outed as well!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Tue 23-Aug-11 13:21:25

gapants yes, I matched you with muddyangels123nomoreHPforme I hope she doesn't mind me telling you this smile

I could just post the list, but I don't know if there is anyone else who doesn't want to be outed?

gapants Tue 23-Aug-11 13:22:14

Oh thank you Ivy, that is really great.

lia66 Tue 23-Aug-11 13:30:34

bear I can send you a ball of mine, I ordered 2 but realistically can only use one myself as I am a very very novice knitter

lia66 that's very sweet of you, I'll pm you now. smile

DutchOma Tue 23-Aug-11 14:37:51

No wool yet...

ComradeJing Tue 23-Aug-11 14:40:11

DutchOma I'm your donor. I'm going to PM you now.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 14:40:30

Bear, the Debbie Bliss and Rowan wools are more or less the same. They are both wonderful to work with and feel really snuggly once made. My squares are a combination of the two and you can't really see or feel any difference.

ComeWhineWithMe Tue 23-Aug-11 14:42:07

I have paid for wool this morning and explained to seller why it is needed so she is sending it asap.

I was matched with someone with first name befinning with F and in Bucks.

Two balls are on their way.

WhoremoaneeGrainger Tue 23-Aug-11 14:49:40

My wool arrived this morning, so i will get cracking later on.

drcrab Tue 23-Aug-11 14:50:18

has my knitter received my wool yet??! I'm looking forward to our co-creation! smile

Moanna Tue 23-Aug-11 14:59:55

I don't have my wool yet either, but I'm in Ireland so will probably take longer.

theglove Tue 23-Aug-11 15:20:21

Ivy, if I have a donor, I don't mind being outed smile I'd like to be able to thank them.

Lovely squares so far!

LadyWellian Tue 23-Aug-11 15:32:38

Bit late to the thread - Pidj, I did a couple of squares at the weekend with wool I had left over from the Edgars' blanket - is that OK or is there another colour scheme? I didn't know Magic8Ball but am desperately sorry for her family.

purplepidjin Tue 23-Aug-11 15:43:54

LadyW, it's all the same principles - as long as the wool type is right, anything goes smile

Thank you [star]

Gay40 Tue 23-Aug-11 15:46:22

Hi Nessa - that will be why you said hello earlier! I didn't twig, sorry x
Anyway, glad to hear it is all looking great - I have the craft skills of an arthritic budgie. Can't wait to see the finished product

NessaRose Tue 23-Aug-11 15:54:47

Gay40, when I've finished I will see if I can figure out how to get the pictures up.
So far I have finished one plain and a ribbing type pattern. I will do a more fancy one now I have got back in to the swing of it.

LadyWellian Tue 23-Aug-11 16:08:46

Aw, thanks Pidj.

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:24:25

Pidj, have contacted MN Towers re our [star] as requested.

<prepares to poke em with a crochet hook>

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:32:30

For those still looking for wool, there's some bargain Debbie Bliss and Rowan Cashsoft in the yarn bargain section here. They are pretty good with prompt posting too.

Ive finished the 'mum' square i charted, it looks ok i think? I have figured out how to put pics up so all the squares ive done so far are now on profile! x

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:42:13

Blimey Ivy, they are wonderful not just ok grin You clever lady!

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:43:22

Sorry, forgot the [BigFatKnittedStar]

<quick look at the Towers>

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:47:57

Have heard back from Rebecca <waves>

They are a bit thin on the ground chez Towers today but have a chat about it as soon as they can.

She's off my crochet hook for today...

<weilds hook for tomorrow>

SoupDragon Tue 23-Aug-11 16:49:34

Square two

I'm so pleased with him I think I may make another.

SoupDragon Tue 23-Aug-11 16:55:32

It looks more than OK, Lydia!

purplepidjin Tue 23-Aug-11 16:55:40

Keep that hook in reserve, Knotty, that's what they said last time! Although, I'd imagine that with all of us lot to supervise, it's pretty manic up there...

<trots off to admire photos>

posterofawolef Tue 23-Aug-11 16:56:31

I just got my wool. Thanks to my donor, it's lovely grin

TimeForCake Tue 23-Aug-11 16:57:25

Lydia they are so lovely. The mum square has brought a tear to my eye.
Keep going everyone, these blankets are going to be so beautiful, just as with previous ones. How the blankets come together is just amazing when you think about it, isn't it?
As one or two others have said, I am inspired to learn to crochet now too. smile

(And come on MNHQ, we definitely need stars!)

purplepidjin Tue 23-Aug-11 16:57:33

KnottyLocks Tue 23-Aug-11 16:57:39

Soupy, that is very very cute grin

posterofawolef Tue 23-Aug-11 16:58:10

Soupdragon - he is ace!!!! envy

TimeForCake Tue 23-Aug-11 17:03:58

Soup that is very impressive and so sweet - Well done!
<mind boggles at how on earth you do it confused>

alibubbles Tue 23-Aug-11 17:06:50

Sorry, I don't wish to hijack the thread, but Dutchoma it is Grandad Burmese who is distraught, kitten used to clean his eyes for him as he is old and arthritic. Ironically we bought the kittens as he missed his 2 sons who had to be put to sleep in Dec 09.

Strangely, brother, who is the wanderer, who disappears for days, has been home all day on DH lap, who on his own admission "blubbed like a baby" yesterday.

It is so sad, we miss him, but it will be lovely to knit for someone albeit with an empty lap sad

alibubbles Tue 23-Aug-11 17:08:06

Oops. apologies, wrong thread blush

LadyWellian Tue 23-Aug-11 17:24:55

Soupy is that an actual wolef? Tis v cute.

Lydia is the chart for that amazing square on this thread somewhere? I've only looked at pages 1, 19 and 20.

purplepidjin Tue 23-Aug-11 18:22:37

LadyW, switch to 100 posts per page - I'm only on P5 grin

lia66 Tue 23-Aug-11 18:36:11

blast those leaky eyes

wow ladies. these are sooo wonderful. xxxx

lia66 Tue 23-Aug-11 18:36:48

I know it's MN and all that but i don't care, those kisses are deserved. grin

Soupy that square is gorgeous!
Ladyw its one that I charted myself this morningbut if you pm me your address I can send you a copy. Will chart a dad one tomorrow x

SoupDragon Tue 23-Aug-11 19:06:12

Wolef? Wolef? It's a bear. To be fair, it's just a square with ears, legs and a face so it could be a wolef...

I've not found another square I like as much. I may have enough to make another two so there is one for each blanket... Decisions decisions.

BupcakesandCunting Tue 23-Aug-11 19:35:18

Got Lydia's wool this morning, thanks Lydia you're a diamond. Have forwarded it on to my crafter in Worcestershire this afternoon, so whoever you are, lovely lady, it should be there tomorrow. smile

skinnymuffin Tue 23-Aug-11 19:53:58

^ Likewise. Thank you Lydia, two gorgeous balls of wool arrived today. I've started my first square in a lovely duck-egg blue colour. The wool is so soft smile It will just be a plain square, I'm not exactly an expert...

I've posted a beautiful pinky/purple ball on to C in Gloucestershire, hope you have it tomorrow!

Thanks for offering the wool lia66, have pm'd you back, I'll buy some more to complement it and get started, tis very kind of you.

Knotty, thanks for the info - will maybe use a combination of the two, will see what I can get hold of tomorrow.

Going to have a look at all your lovely squares - hope mine don't let the side down!

Gay40 Tue 23-Aug-11 22:17:50

I think it's been great to see a thread where everyone has a common purpose. It just goes to show that whatever your opinions on everything else, you can have that shared impulse to help a grieving family.

pinkcupcakefairy Tue 23-Aug-11 22:25:53

Am fairly certain its been figured out, but by all means let my knitter know who I am, if only so i can check the wool has arrived or get onto royal mail or laughing hen if needs be.

Blondeshavemorefun Tue 23-Aug-11 23:21:45

thanks knotty

Thumbwitch Tue 23-Aug-11 23:29:44

LYdia, those are fantastic! And Soupy, that bear/wolef is just lovely - I hope you can do one for each blanket, it's so sweet!

So many clever-fingered people smile

Thank you lydia for the beautiful wool, and for the donor's ball. ivy I'm very happy for the donor to know who I am.
Tis with a heavy heart i'll start my squares later today. This is such a lovely thing you're all doing for a very special lady.
Is there a deadline for the completion of the squares?

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 08:28:35

2nd of September if possible, please AppleBlossoms (they're coming to me)

Soupy, that is fab!

Would my donor be able to get my yarn to me before the bank holiday? I'm away and will have more time to sit-around-on-my-arse-and knit smile

I have just finished my 3rd square.

Purple are we sending them to you? Could you PM me your address please as I need to send them before the weekend as we are away on holiday then.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Wed 24-Aug-11 09:18:26

ready your wool has been bought and sent, I think smile

My fourth square

and all four together

might try knitting one today smile

lydia those squares are beautiful! and soupy I love the bear

LawrieMarlow Wed 24-Aug-11 09:21:58

Thank you to my donor whoever they are - wool came yesterday and will get on with my square later on

NessaRose Wed 24-Aug-11 09:44:03

Purple can you pm me your address please?

BupcakesandCunting Wed 24-Aug-11 09:46:47

Ivy, your squares are so lovely, same as everyone elses. envy <resolves to learn to knit/crochet>

I wonder who my crafter is? <nosey arse>

Thank you, after that, it arrived just now! Lovely colours, will start this evening smile

Thank you to my donor smile

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 09:58:25

I've PM'd Ivy, hopefully she's about and will do a bulk PM to all crafters with the address to send squares to!

angelpantser Wed 24-Aug-11 10:05:31

I have already contacted you Ivy to update your spreadsheet and also my donor to pass on my thanks. I'm just finishing a cardi for my neice and will get cracking on my squares, hopefully tomorrow.

I'm using an iPod as ironically I asked DH to Mcafee me off MN on my laptop so I could get all my knitting projects finished. So I'm keeping up to date with the thread but not posting much.

drcrab Wed 24-Aug-11 10:06:06

LawrieMarlow hello! smile I'm looking forrward to seeing our 'co-creation'. Thank you so much for doing this xx

SoupDragon Wed 24-Aug-11 10:08:41

I do think the way people who can and can't knit/crochet have been paired up is inspired. I've never been able to crochet for previous blankets and was too disorganised to sew the fabric square I promised and this way everyone gets to help who wants to. It must have been an organisational nightmare though smile

LawrieMarlow Wed 24-Aug-11 10:20:33

Will do my best dr crab smile

Am going to use this pattern - used it in Edgar's quilt and am also putting it here so I don't lose it

I would love some wool please, as I do not have enough left for any squares, all my Debbie Bliss is the wrong sort, it is cotton.

Please could I b matched up with a donor, thank you

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 10:54:04

Lawrie, those hearts looked spectacular on the previous blankets

Alibubbles, have you PM's Ivy? just in case your post gets "lost" in the morass [star]

There was a bit of an attempt at the matching on the other blankets, this time it jsut seemed like a simpler option. Also, there were some horrible accusations when Pixie had to leave MN about money going missing (she never touched it, it was another MNer who had control) but with the matching, all that can be avoided because there's no fund iyswim?

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 11:12:27

First two squares just arrived, thank you NickelBabe [star]

nickelbabe Wed 24-Aug-11 11:19:25

"squares" i think grinblush

I felt sad making them. sad

Gay40 Wed 24-Aug-11 11:19:28

The matching was a brilliant suggestion. I wish we could do it with other problems on here !!

LadyWellian Wed 24-Aug-11 11:21:02

Lydia thanks, will do.

If we're doing three blankets, I might have to see if I can squeeze another square out of the wool I have left. Also have to block the ones I've done as I've no idea if they are 6x6 at present.

Soupy sorry to besmirch your bear with allegations of wolefishness blush

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Wed 24-Aug-11 11:24:33

If anyone has leftovers that can't be made into more squares, we should make a collection of those and either send them to purple for attachment coordination, or to people who would be prepared to use the leftovers to make more squares.
I hope we can put every scrap to its intended purpose.

And I hope you don't mind me suggesting this. smile

off to bother you all with more pms send the crafters the address to post the squares to.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 11:37:42

Ivy, in the past we've asked that people include leftover wool with their squares so that Pidj can use it to hook the squares together and for the edging. Could you include that in your PMs?

alibubbles Wed 24-Aug-11 11:39:14

lydiathetattooedlady there are some lovely squares on your profile pics, could I have the patterns please? Particularly the heart one, thank you

mistlethrush Wed 24-Aug-11 11:56:24

We really should see if we could get an on-line wool-shop 'on-board' when we're doing something like this and do all matching via that shop - and see if we can negotiate a discout or a 'free ball' to be sent eg to pidj for every eg 20 that are ordered through that shop for that specific blanket.

calrabbit Wed 24-Aug-11 11:57:27

hi there

thankyou skinny muffin for my wool and also thanks to all the posts on here for inspiration as there are so many talented crafters for this blanket.

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 12:21:20

Spare wook can come to me, or pass it around so we can have lots of pretty patterns?

Gay - yes, we need MN mentors, particularly to get people out of abusive relationships!

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 12:24:44

When you post your squares to PurplePidj, if possible could you please include any leftover wool? This can be used to sew the squares together and make the edge. Many thanks [star]

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 12:27:16

Ooh! Also, please sew your own ends in - it's a PITA job, but can you imagine having to do it on every single square, all in one hit? shock

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 12:41:28

I'm nagging Rebecca again... <waves>

<practices Samuri moves with crochet hook>

nickelbabe Wed 24-Aug-11 12:42:39

oops, sorry! I didn't sew my ends in because I thought you might need the extra wool for joining blush

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 12:43:01

Knotty, perhaps a petition would be more effective? Start a thread and get people to show their support?

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 12:43:30

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 12:43:39

No worries, Nickel - I can cope with a few...

GalaxyWeaver Wed 24-Aug-11 12:47:44

Still no wool here.. i know it takes time, but i want to get going on it!

question for those knitting the squares.. roughly how many stitches/rows is the 6 inch square taking?

LadyWellian Wed 24-Aug-11 12:48:55

Galaxy it's roughly 33 stitches/44-ish rows.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 12:54:42

Okey doke, I'll start a thread.

mrspear Wed 24-Aug-11 12:58:07

How bloody awful. I cannot knit but i can get some wool and post to a knitter - just pm me.

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 13:00:51

Thank you mrspear, please can you PM IvySedai so she can match you to a frafter [star]

angelpantser Wed 24-Aug-11 13:04:40

A public thank you to Hulababy for my wool and to Lydia for sending it out so quickly.

I have a ball of raspberry pink and a lovely lime green.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 13:08:40

Down your tools for a min, lovely ladies.
I need you to sign up for [stars] over here

5inthebed Wed 24-Aug-11 13:13:18

I can't contribute knitting wise, but would like to donate towards wool. Can someone please let me know the paypal address, thanks.

TimeForCake Wed 24-Aug-11 13:13:18

Star cause supported! smile Surely MNHQ will oblige now.

Narketta Wed 24-Aug-11 13:16:21

I've just received a ball of wool in the most gorgeous shade of blue kindly donated by Tadlow I'll get started as soon as the DC are in bed tonight.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 13:27:11

Ta, Cakey. smile

I've reported my OP too. grin

TadlowDogIncident Wed 24-Aug-11 14:02:43

Glad it arrived, Narketta! Looking forward to seeing the results.

skinnymuffin Wed 24-Aug-11 14:06:22

Quick question:

I am knitting a plain square (garter stitch I think it's called - ie no fancy stitches!).

4.5 mm needles, cast on 33 stitches which measures 6'' across.

I'm on row 45 now, and without stretching, laid flat, it is 5'' long.

From what I've read above, 45 rows is recommended, but I'm an 1'' short (story of my life...)

So, lovely expert crafters, do I keep going?? Or is stretching involved in the making-up process?

<knitting numpty>

ps wool from Lydia, so I know that's right!!

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 14:10:27

AFAIK, Skinny, it depends on your tension. So, if you cast on six inches then keep going till you have six inches worth of rows...

Hopefully a proper knitter will turn up shortly and correct me!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Wed 24-Aug-11 14:13:03

Yeah I think it is to do with tension, keep going smile

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 14:16:56

< massages Skinny's shoulders to release tension>

skinnymuffin Wed 24-Aug-11 14:21:41

So I'm tense?? grin Well that makes sense!

Knitting is so enlightening isn't it?

<clickety-clack clickety-clack>

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 14:34:59

Enlightening is one word for it, Skinny grin

I'm tying myself up in knots attempting crochet flowers. Suits my name, I suppose.

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 14:49:04

And I'm swearing at myself. I have 4 pairs of trousers to make asap (ie, today because i have a job interview tomorrow then we're off to SIL's for the weekend for DN's birthday) and, having finally finished the first pair, I've started by sewing up the wrong seams on the second. Which means I have to rip it all out. And they're french seams so it's two lines of stitching.

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 14:54:25

Pidj, step away from the internet, my lovely. smile

<sympathetic pat on the shoulder>

nickelbabe Wed 24-Aug-11 14:57:45

pidj - don't worry about that - that's what i do every time!

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 15:03:27

Nah, the interwebz is keeping me sane while I step away from the sewing!

Nickel, I have 3 more pairs to make before back to school, plus DN's birthday cake to finish

Actually, will go play with icing. It's going up with DP to SIL's tomorrow, so I can reasonably argue that it's more urgent grin

Narketta Wed 24-Aug-11 15:52:04

I couldn't wait until tonight to make my first square so I've neglected the DC and made my first one I've put a picture on my profilesmile

I've had to make it on a 4.5ml hook though to get it to the required 6", if this is a problem can someone let me know as i've not tied it off yet so it's easy to undo if I have to .

KnottyLocks Wed 24-Aug-11 16:06:55

have a look at the star thread.

MNHQ have posted a very big [star] for all of us grin

nickelbabe Wed 24-Aug-11 16:07:02

it's beautiful.
it doesn't matter how you get to 6" as long as you do! grin

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 16:37:41

I <3 RebeccaMumsNet's star grin [star]

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Wed 24-Aug-11 17:46:44

Narketta That is lovely smile

Narketta Wed 24-Aug-11 18:03:15

I'm glad you like itsmile It was a little bit adventurous for me so i'm pleased that it turned out so well.

I think I'll do bobbles on my next one, I did bobbles for Edgars blanket and they turned out well.

100years Wed 24-Aug-11 18:13:51

I've made another 2 squares and put the pics on my profile.

Have weighed the wool I've got left and can't make a plain square out of the one ball but can out of the others, so I'm debating doing a plain one colour one or another granny square with a changing colour. Won't do any more tonight as I'm shattered, but have a quiet day tomorrow.

pinkthechaffinch Wed 24-Aug-11 18:27:19

Postie finally delivered my wool! so will get cracking tonight.

Thanks again to my donor, a very kind lady who also included a big bag of Cadbury's eclairs! really sweet of you smile

Georgimama Wed 24-Aug-11 18:31:55

Could anyone clever give me a linky or even post a butterfly/dragonfly pattern for a six inch square in knitting? Is there such a thing? I've signed up to ravelry but tbh I'm finding the site kind of hard to navigate to search for patterns (am clearly a Luddite).

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 18:44:11

alibubbles pm me your address n i'll send you the butterfly and mumchart.

skinny garter stitch is a smaller stitch tension wise so you will require more rows approximately for 6" square 33sts and 57 rows. If you are doing a knit-a-row, purl-a-row square it is 33 stitches and 45/46 rows.

Has everybody recieved their wool??

pidj did you want me to send the squares to you so you can plan out the blankets then send them back or shall i hold on to mine and then you forward more on to me? x x

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 19:06:11

Don't send to me to be sent back unless you want them distributed around the blankets. It's a bit of a waste of postage and time imo.

We'll decide who's doing which blanket, then I'll make sure that all the letters go to the right place.

How are we attaching the squares? I've done the previous ones with a dc through both squares, matching stitches and ends as well as possible. Because everyone's tension is different, and putting knitted next to crochet, that seemed like the best way to make sure I didn't end up with some scruffy, misaligned mess anal retentive it also meant that any discrepancies in size weren't as noticeable. Is that the best way (and does my description make sense) or does anyone have a better suggestion??

alibubbles Wed 24-Aug-11 19:23:03

lydia you have mail, thank you!

gapants Wed 24-Aug-11 19:44:57

lydia I have PM'd you

pidj thanks for the links. I had a go at the dragon fly one and it came out fine on my dry run, just waiting on wool now. My fingers are all warmed up!

I have one square left to do, I will try the last link you put up there pidj, looks good

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 19:57:06

Bear in mind I don't knit (although might give it a go this evening, as I discovered my needles the other day) so no idea if the links are easy or hard!

skinny - I knit quite tightly, and need about 35 stitches on 4.5mm needles to get 6". I don't count rows, just keep knitting until it measures 6".

I am blocking my squares now, and they should go in the post tomorrow. There is a tiny bit of wool left over so I will pop that in with them.

I will upload a pic of the 3rd square later.

LawrieMarlow Wed 24-Aug-11 20:22:38

I took my wool and needles with and knitted a bit on Riveaulx Terrace, a bit by Riveaulx Abbey and a bit by Byland Abbey. Will take a picture of it later smile

There is another way to do a square where you do it across the diagonal - start with one stitch and increase by one. Then increase by one every row until you get a side that is 6 inches (not the part on the needles as then it wouldn't be 6 inches along the sides of the square). Then decrease by one stitch each row. Means it doesn't matter what your tension is as you just keep going until it is right.

skinnymuffin Wed 24-Aug-11 20:49:32

Thank you everyone for help with my tension (especially the massage!!).

I have finished my first square smile

33 stitches x 58 rows in garter stitch, thank you Lydia (again) - good to know I'm not 33% more tense than the average knitter...

I've uploaded a picture to my profile page if anyone wants a nosey?

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 20:59:58

skinny, you should be very proud of yourself [star]

I have cast on 50 to try this pattern I haven't knitted for over 20 years. I am now going to have a bath and escape dp's etenal football obsession then i will swear at it futher. I have a bowl of chocolate ganache for company grin

Georgimama Wed 24-Aug-11 21:03:28

thank you purple, the first two don't look too hard but I'm worried they may come up too big - 37 stitches and 55 rows but there is a border on it which I will try to take off. Or I will knit tight. And hope I don't waste thumbwitch's wool.

cover me, I'm going in. When dd stops bfing that is.

Georgi - try a size smaller needles.

My dragonfly should have been 8x8 but I sized down the needles to make it 6x6

DairyBeetle Wed 24-Aug-11 21:12:08

HappyMole I have the lovely purple wool and knitting is underway!
(Well it was then I realised that I had somehow ended up with an extra inch of stitches so am starting again. I can use a ruler, honest blush )

Georgimama Wed 24-Aug-11 21:17:08

I've got 4mm needles so that should help - if it comes up slightly big I apologise profusely to whoever is putting it together.

Muser Wed 24-Aug-11 21:39:33

I have wool and have started knitting. A bit concerned my size is going wrong, but I'm keeping on and seeing what I get. I like the idea of doing the square by increasing, but last time I tried to increase stitches it went hideously wrong. Decreasing I can do. Increasing confuses me.

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 21:59:38

Muser, just cast on <lots> then decrease til you get to 1

Anybody up enough on geometry to work out how many <lots> is in real life? blush

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 22:00:04

Oops, meant to add - make 2 of the above and sew them together to get a square!

lia66 Wed 24-Aug-11 22:10:05

where is the star thread please

purplepidjin Wed 24-Aug-11 22:21:40

I have added my bit to the request though, but we really must remind them next week or it will be forgotten again!

Neither of my two local wool shops has either of these types of wool in hmm.I am fairly sure there won't be enough of the raspberry for the border of the third bear. Bah! I shall have to go further afield...

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 09:22:24

Soupy, what is the code number for the raspberry wool? Is it the Debbie Bliss or Rowan?

alibubbles Thu 25-Aug-11 10:14:52

Is there any wool on it's way to me please? Thank you

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 10:28:58

Ali, if you PM Ivy she should be able to tell you.

TimeForCake Thu 25-Aug-11 10:46:48

Maybe someone else will have some raspberry left over Soup, if it's only a small amount you need and are struggling to find some?

Very impressed at the sound of three bears! smile

morning, without meaning to sound like a knitting swot-head, i thought id write down how many rows x stitches for various squares for knitters to guide them or do i sound like a bit of a dick?!

any how for a stocking stitch square (knit-a-row, purl-a-row) you need 33/34 stitches and 45/46 rows.

For a garter stitch square (knit every row) you'll need 33/34 stitches by 57-58 rows.

And for a square that goes diagonal (starting from 1 stitch, this is best for those who arent sure on tension)
1st row: knit into front and back and front again of starter stitch (your first stitch on needle) 3sts
2nd row: knit into front and back of your 1st st, knit to end 4sts

repeat 2nd row until you have 45 stitches or both sides measure 6 inches.

Then knit 2 together, knit to end and repeat this on every row to last 3 sts and k3tog.
Please feel free to throw paper balls, elastic bands, knitting needles etc! grin

skinny well done on your square!

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 10:53:04

Lydia, you just answered my question from last night! [star]

<throws chocolate>

Muser, cast on 45 then decrease by 1 st either end until you get to 1. Do this twice then sew the two together grin

gapants Thu 25-Aug-11 11:42:51

thanks lydia

I have finished 2 dry runs on my practice wool The heart one came up really pretty, but the dragon fly one is too big. Any tips on reducing it? I used similar (Rowan merino) DK wool on size 8 needles.

Still nothing in the post from my donor- bugger you royal mail! I really want to get everything knitted up over the bank holiday and then on to purplepidjin on the Tuesday.

Just wanted to say thanks to lia66 [star] for the lovely raspberry wool which arrived today. I bought a couple of others too, one from Cucumberpatch who were indeed very speedy, and some from Yarn. Made two last night which came out different sizes! but will get cracking with more over the next few days. They are only granny squares though, hope that's ok.

Off to add my two penn'orth to the [star] thread.

Thumbwitch Thu 25-Aug-11 12:09:45

Georgi you are an absolute star for trying the butterfly! When we get our [star] emoticon (MNHQ, are you listening?) then you will get MANY of them, thank you smile.

NessaRose Thu 25-Aug-11 12:17:48

I have a bit of a problem, DD the little madam has hidden my knitting needles so I cant finish the last square until either dd or I find them!! Where would a 2yo hide them I wonder.hmm grin

clareanna Thu 25-Aug-11 12:18:01

cherry I have just ordered some lovely wool for you from laughing hens - it should be with you soon.

Thank you all again for what you are doing for magic's girls - she was a wonderful funny friend and to be able to give a physical manifestation of what she meant to so many people virtually via MN is amazing.

SoupDragon Thu 25-Aug-11 12:22:58

It's the raspberry Debbie Bliss. For the next two bears, I'm going to try doing just 2 of the three fat Treble crochet rows in raspberry and the outermost in the White (of which I have plenty). Hopefully this should work. If, after this bear, it looks unlikey, I can do a raspberry bear on White background.

I'm useless at estimating wool use!

Just to swot up even more for a diagonal square in stocking stitch you need to increase a stitch at the beginning of each row to 41 sts. Or start with 41sts decrease to 1 then sew two of these together to make a square!

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 12:31:56

Soupy, is it Raspberry 022?

Cucumberpatch have some in their yarn bargains section...I think.

SoupDragon Thu 25-Aug-11 12:34:42

Don't make me look at another wool site! I spent £40 looking for it this morning (and didn't find it grin blush)

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 12:36:32

Blimey, that's good going grin

Can we send you a ball instead?

SoupDragon Thu 25-Aug-11 12:47:17

i'm hoping to fudge it, one way or another!

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 12:52:26

Ladies, I need your help!

have had to start a new Star thread. MNHQ want to see how much support the idea has.
New star thread

Spread the word! grin

TheOriginalDesperateHousewife Thu 25-Aug-11 13:01:57

OK, very ignorant question, but I don't understand about the blanket...what happens to it?

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 13:07:41

the finished squares are sent to Pidj who stitched them together and adds a pretty edge.

We then transport the blanket to Magic's family.

In the past, we have done this by relay as we had a shocker with the first blanket when ParcelForce mislaid it, for it to be found in a dusty corner of a warehouse minus packaging.

We have also done a meet up, with Rinders and Edgar where we handed the blankets directly to them.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 13:10:38

From our experience, the families have been very touched by everyone's thoughts and efforts. Where possible, we have personalised the blankets to include initials and favourite things. For example, Edgar's little Leo loved balloons, flowers and pink cake so we had many squares with those on as well as his name and the initials of his sisters.

pinkthechaffinch Thu 25-Aug-11 13:26:58

Here is my first finished square¤t=SDC11462.jpg

I'm going to post them when I've doen 4, so should be Monday.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 13:28:50

Oooooooo Pink, that looks very snuggly grin

thelittlefriend Thu 25-Aug-11 13:31:32

Thanks for posting pics pinkthechaffinch. I've gone all smiley and weepy at the same time to think that something so lovely is being done with the wool I sent. Well done.

ComeWhineWithMe Thu 25-Aug-11 13:34:41

Has anyone recieved my wool yet? It is two balls, cream and powder pink. The poster has the initials FC.

pinkthechaffinch Thu 25-Aug-11 13:36:01

Thank you kindly grin whilst mucnking on yummy eclair!

DutchOma Thu 25-Aug-11 14:17:11

I've got wool. Just as my donor said she would put a rocket under the Laughing Hens it turned up and I think it must have been Royal Mail's fault, not the Hens as their invoice was done a week ago.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 14:25:30

<fancies a yummy eclair>

Looks like this [star] business may not have the support needed.

Anyone would think I'm trying to instigate a facist regime. confused

mistlethrush Thu 25-Aug-11 14:33:56

[star] for Knotty anyway

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 14:39:36

I've offered to kill the bear if we can have a [star]

Honestly, the things I'm prepared to do grin

TheOriginalDesperateHousewife Thu 25-Aug-11 15:05:22

Thanks for explaining, KnottyLocks smile What a lovely idea!

LadyWellian Thu 25-Aug-11 15:07:23

I think there may be a leetle bit of overthink going on regarding this [star].

skinnymuffin Thu 25-Aug-11 15:47:44

Starting my second square. Unpicked it twice after 4/5 rows blush

Trying to get a sort of ribbed effect by knitting a few rows then purling a few (knitting the first stitch on each purl row).

Is that right? Anyone got a suggestion for how many rows to knit, then how many to purl to make it easier?

I'm rubbish at purling, so the fewer of those the better... Oh, and I hate stocking stitch (for the aforementioned reason!)

<disclaimer: I am hopeless>

Knotty - kill the bear - what me?! shock grin

<BearGryllsBra shaking in her boots>

Seriously though, have added my support to your site stuff thread.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 16:13:27

Thanks, Bear.

Actually, you're the bra bit aren't you, not the bear. Therefore, if we offed the bear, you'd be free grin

theglove Thu 25-Aug-11 16:15:29

My beautiful wool arrived today, thanks so much to my donor, you've picked lovely colours - one a peachy pink and the other raspberry pink.

Off to feed the kids, then I'll get cracking, I can't wait grin been looking at everyone else's for inspiration, they're really good.

grin Knotty, like Dobby the house elf. Free!

By the way Knotty, I am actually crocheting, not spending all my time on here honest.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 16:44:55

That's multi-tasking, Bear wink

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 16:45:56

I'm desperate for this wool delivery now. Should be here already.

Only thing that'll keep me out of trouble grin

DutchOma Thu 25-Aug-11 16:49:55

Right, the last letter square finished. I've uploaded pictures to Flickr under Dutchoma37, they are not brilliant at the best of times. I tried to get them onto here with a link, but it failed sad
What do you want me to do next? I can do more letters, teddy bears, or plain (textured) squares. I am planning to do three teddies to tie onto the blanket, not in Debbie Bliss, Rowan yarn. I figured it did not matter too much, because it could be washed separately

100years Thu 25-Aug-11 17:10:20

I've managed to make 6 squares smile

I think I will stop now as I'm getting a bit low on wool, so don't know what I would be able to do for another one. The pic of the six I've done are all on my profile if you want to look. The last one was one that was supposed to be from a pattern to make a 6" square but ended up only about 4" when I had finished so I had to improvise the outside couple of inches.

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 17:43:07

DutchOma on Flickr

100, six squares? And there was you thinking you wouldn't get even one done! [star]

DutchOma Thu 25-Aug-11 17:44:57

On my profile now. I thought an Oma could do it if 100years could do it. I'm not as old as all that. grin

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 18:02:39

Oma, I never had any doubt that you would thoroughly earn your [star] grin thank you

Littlefish Thu 25-Aug-11 18:09:36

Just waiting for my wool to arrive from my donor and then I can get started.

DutchOma Thu 25-Aug-11 18:54:44

Pictures on Flickr are actually quite reasonable. What would you like me to do next?

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 19:03:32

Oma, they are gorgeous smile

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 19:09:29

GAH!! Oh I'm having a right time with, where I ordered my wool from. I ordered and paid last thursday and have heard nothing - I've emailed and left phone messages and still nothing.

Is anyone else having this problem? My knitter (SongBird) is waiting and I feel like I've let her down sad sad

rubycon Thu 25-Aug-11 19:24:23

I received the wool this morning from Vajazzel - 3 squares knitted done and will be posted on Saturday.

Beautiful squares oma!
Is anyone waiting for yarn that their donor has ordered from me? I have one lot that there has been a complication with a card but ive been unable to contact the donor! Please pm me if you think its you i have your address so will be able to confirm, your surname begins with D.

gapants Thu 25-Aug-11 19:39:27

pinkthechaffinch and oma they are all lovely squares. If you have patterns would you mind PM-ing them, or you can email me if that is better? Let me know and I will PM you my email address.

Everyone deserves a star.

pinkcupcakefairy Thu 25-Aug-11 19:56:04

Has anyone else had problems with laughing hen. I ordered wool for my knitter 1st thing on friday (b4 9am) and it hasn't yet got there - feel really bad that its a whole week later and still no wool.

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 19:59:35

pinkcupcake, I know what you mean!

<shakes fist at >

100years Thu 25-Aug-11 20:20:16

Lovely squares Oma smile

Yeah purple. I'm glad I was able to do more than onesmile

I could do a couple more butterflies but not attach them if you think you would be able to attach them to a square if you wanted.

ThisIsANiceCage Thu 25-Aug-11 20:26:49

I used cafeknit - ordered today and have already been told it's been despatched.

'Tis favouritism. <nods>

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 20:29:58

GalaxyWeaver Thu 25-Aug-11 20:31:54

still no wool here sad

It's not your fault it hasn't arrived yet Pinot! It will hopefully come in tomorrows post. It being a little delayed has just given me extra time to practice with crap wool I had. <<need a LOT of practice>>

Tsil Thu 25-Aug-11 20:35:38

The glove - they sound like the colours I picked, I may be your donor. Do you live in a place beginning with C?

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 20:36:07

100, that'd be lovely - you're more than welcome to attach them to your own, though, if you like!

BTW has everyone had their say on Knotty's new thread?

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 20:36:53

I just think they're giving us the runaroun, Song. No replies to email OR phonecalls. SUCKS.

It is shocking they're ignoring calls and e-mails. Have they sent anything to tell you it's been dispatched?

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 20:52:16

Nope, they took payment and I have a receipt email for that. Since then - silencio.

Celibacyisnotforme Thu 25-Aug-11 21:04:15

I'm coming late to this party but have PM's Purple and Ivy - crocheted squares on their way! I have some wool left over from Edgar and Purple's blankets but may need more...

Did I read that someone else got confirmation of dispatch? Silencio is bad

Mrsfred Thu 25-Aug-11 21:07:17

I ordered two balls from last Thursday and it arrived yesterday.

I've had my mum here for two days teaching me to knit. I didn't put my name forward until I was sure I could do it.

She took pity on me and has taken one ball home with her so you get at least two decent squares from the fred household and maybe one half-decent one (that may have been unpicked and redone a couple - three - times.

You ordered thursday too didn't you Pinot? So really it should have arrived by yesterday like Mrsfreds.

PinotsWolefCubs Thu 25-Aug-11 21:12:19

All I can think is that the colour I asked for is out of stock...but even then they should reply to my contacts. bastards

ThisIsANiceCage Thu 25-Aug-11 21:23:19

Oh, and I, er, directed them here to explain what the wool was for. To show how nice we all are. As a good brand ambassador and all that.shock

<sits on Pinot to muffle swearing>

<smiles beatifically>

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 21:24:48

[star] for MrsFred, who's Pm I read before I read the thread grin

Odd about CafeKnit. They should definitely at least pick up the phone. Emails are easy to ignore. Do we know whereabouts they're based, and do we have someone available to go and threaten them with a crochet hook ask what's going on?

purplepidjin Thu 25-Aug-11 21:26:06

This answers my question

Anyone in Suffolk want an extra [star]???

pinkthechaffinch Thu 25-Aug-11 21:32:43

I used the basket weave pattern on this site which someone else linked to earlier on in this thread

There are lots to choose from and I found the patterns quite easy to interpret.

Will keep my fingers crossed it turns up tomorrow, that colour is showing as available to order so maybe it just got delayed with royal mail.

Oooo it was me that posted that site <<feels useful for a change>>

pinkthechaffinch Thu 25-Aug-11 21:41:57

It's a very good site indeed

hands out [special relevant research award star]

<<bows>> thanks pink grin

Mrsfred Thu 25-Aug-11 21:43:54

Pinot Probably won't help you much, but I ordered the pale pink and lilac. Mine were sent via standard parcel post.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Thu 25-Aug-11 22:18:47

Just wanted to say that my wool has arrived today and I will send it on to my crafter tomorrow. I don't have their MN name but I have their RL name and address (won't post it on here obviously) but if you know you are getting wool from Freezing then it will be on it's way tomorrow.

Muser Thu 25-Aug-11 22:56:51

My first square is done, picture on my profile. It is very curly on the edges so I shall attempt to block it to straighten it out. I'm going to do a straight knit and a moss stitch as well I think.

KnottyLocks Thu 25-Aug-11 23:17:36

Blimey, you lot have been busy grin

We had a few delays with wool for the last blanket. It all got sorted though.

<resolutely half-full>

Looks like I may be buried under a wool mountain very soon as Pistey's wool from Cucumberpatch got cocked up so she's ordered more, bless her. Very strange as normally the wooly cucumbers dispatch the same day.

It's all gone a bit confused

theglove Thu 25-Aug-11 23:55:20

Tsil, yes I do. Thanks very much, I'm glad to know who you are smile

Very nice of you to send two balls as well. I'm halfway through my first square in moss stitch, and knitting very slowly and carefully as I'm world champion stitch-dropper.

I'll post pictures when done, thanks again

Georgimama Fri 26-Aug-11 08:04:28

I'm so glad someone else hates purling. I always thought that made me a bit of a knitting oddbod - in fact my hatred of purl is why I don't knit!

The butterfly itself is coming along nicely (garter stitch on a stocking stitch background so fairly simple) but I cocked up the moss stitch border and had to go crying to my mum to help so it had to be taken back quite a number of rows. Moss stitch has always defeated me in the past but I will not be beaten! I'm about 2/3 of the way through the first butterfly square and I will do another the same. I don't think I'll manage to get 3 squares out of the one ball as the pattern is 55 rows.

Georgimama Fri 26-Aug-11 08:05:52

Ivy those footprints are lovely.

Thumbwitch Fri 26-Aug-11 08:08:00

Sounds wonderful, Georgi! Can't wait to see the pic smile

I'm probably even more of an oddbod then - I actually prefer purl to knit! blush

Georgimama Fri 26-Aug-11 08:14:16

Right, must stop knitting and MNing and wash/dress/detach feral children from television.

3 squares knitted, blocked and packed up ready to post this morning.

Pictures on my profile.

There was only about 50cm of wool left so I haven't bothered putting it in as it wouldn't go very far!

GalaxyWeaver Fri 26-Aug-11 09:16:35

post arrived, no wool again sad

Muser Fri 26-Aug-11 09:19:35

They are lovely Jemima, and so are the footprints Ivy. What talented people!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Fri 26-Aug-11 09:20:39

sad galaxy did I tell you who your donor was? I am in the middle of formatting my laptop and can't get to my spreadsheet at the moment I'm afraid. do you know where your wool is coming from? there seems to have been a bit of delay from a couple of sites - laughing hens and cucumberpatch as far as I know... their posties seem to be a bit crap at the moment.

If you have any spreadsheet related questions, I am afraid I won't be able to answer them until tonight when I get my external harddrive with the computer backup back. Sorry

Littlefish Fri 26-Aug-11 10:30:09

Hi Ivy - I'm still waiting for my wool too. Sorry to hassle you. smile

I don't know where my wool is coming from.

Meow75 Fri 26-Aug-11 10:40:17

I think my wool paid for by PinkCupcakeFairy might be waiting for me at the local sorting office. Red card on the doormat when I get home yesterday. It was left about 40 minutes after I went out!! <bloody typical emoticon>

Off to get it now, in the rain. brew and knitting later. Yaay!!!

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 11:32:30

I'm finally tackling the edge on the raffle blanket! Hope everyone's wool turns up soon [star]

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 11:32:31

I'm finally tackling the edge on the raffle blanket! Hope everyone's wool turns up soon [star]

PinotsWolefCubs Fri 26-Aug-11 11:45:41

Right finally spoken to cafeknit who say it was despatched Monday - if not received by tomorrow I have to contact again for another one.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Aug-11 12:18:04

Pidj, with all the woolly delays, you may have to consider a later last posting date.

[BigFatWoollyStars] to all the beautiful squares.
I'm inspired but have run out of wool. Gah!

Postie not been yet. <humph>

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Aug-11 12:19:50

Pidj, I think Pistey has got two balls for the edge of the new blanket/s. We're trying to work out if it's on its way to her or me.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Aug-11 12:20:32

Um, balls of wool, that is grin

Knotty I must have missed it somewhere, what is the last posting date please, and who shall I send them to? Apologies if I've missed the obvious.

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Aug-11 12:37:24

I think Pidj originally said last posting was Friday 9th Sept. She'll be back to confirm one way or the other. smile

I'll PM you the address.

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 12:44:25

9/9/11 is last posting please

Are we going to march on mntowers with starry banners/raffle launching plans? If so shall we make it the following monday and anyone who wants to can drop them off in person?

KnottyLocks Fri 26-Aug-11 12:47:18

PMed you, Bear.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd Fri 26-Aug-11 13:02:06

purple I would have liked my squares distributed across the blankets - shall I send them to you or are you going to bring the lot when we meet for handover cake pigging?

Thanks Knotty and Purple - should easily have them done by then. Hope everyone's wool turns up quickly - my Cucumberpatch was the next day, maybe it's the RM.

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 13:17:00

Ivy, we'll meet up the following week to distribute if you like sigh of relief at not having to make a decision

Is haskins/hobbycraft at wimbourne a good place (all local enough welcome)

Will let you know if it arrives tomorrow Pinot, sat post is normally around lunchtime here.

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 13:45:37

ivy and lydia

This is the edging pattern I'm using. 'Tis mine own so you might want to test it if you're going to use it grin

Dc along edge of square

When you get to the last st or corner, ch3 dc in 1st of next sq

Sl st in previous dc

In the hole, htc hxtc 2xtc 2htc picot 2htc 2xtc hxtc htc

Dc along

Does that make any sense outside my own head? It should make a little heart?

100years Fri 26-Aug-11 13:54:56

Well I've managed to actually make another square this morning! And I have made 3 butterflies. Pics are all on my profile. They are all ready to send off now.

Although I don't know what 'block' is so I haven't blocked mine.

purplepidjin Fri 26-Aug-11 14:00:52

It means dampening your square, pinning it to exactly 6" and gently ironing it through a teatowel what a lot of faff

I don't bother!

gapants Fri 26-Aug-11 14:02:32

ivy your footprints one is so pretty, care to share the pattern pretty please?

No wool yet for me. I am on bed rest 32 weeks pregnant- but might send DH to town to see if he can get wool....could be a disaster though

100years Fri 26-Aug-11 14:06:48

gapants, sorry about the bed rest, hope your hubby gets the right wool for you.

Ah purple, thanks. I'll not worry about doing that. Me and an iron are not the best of friends most times!

SoupDragon Fri 26-Aug-11 14:18:45
