Try Googling - Knitting Diagonal Squares - that way the square grows as you knit so you do not have to work out how many stitches to start with and when you measure 6 inches you start to decrease and you end up with a lovely square very quickly.

I cast on 33 sts for a 6" Square.

33 stitches here too, and around 45-48 rows.

My tension is fairly standard.

I cast on 33.
And knit 42 rows for stocking stitch.

For garter stitch, 30 sts and 50 rows!

Try knitting a half sized one as a swatch.
Cast on 16 sts and work 21 rows of stocking stitch.

If this makes a 3 inch square, you are good to go!

Calling all genius knitters! I was hoping to knit some 12 inch squares for kinship hugs. If 33 stitches gives me 6 inches then 66 stitches for 12 inch?

Active is too active. Giving this a little bump!

Yes, as long as the same stitch.

Bless you. 33 stitches seems to work for most stitches. (I'm not very adventurous!!)
