This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*****

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

*

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

I am doing a bit of my blanket today.
First time I have worked on it in day light.
It looks totally different and much fruitier than it does in the evening grin

I was worried it was a bit on the burgundy side but it turns out its lovely and pink! Yay.

LackaDAISYcal Sun 31-Mar-13 16:25:23

I will do pistey smile

I'm about a third of the way done with my blanket and loving it! It's an "attic24" rainbow zig zag and is sooo bright and cheering. I think every home should have one as it makes me smile a lot!

I won't get my blanket finished for this batch sad I've tried really hard and am about a two thirds there, but was laid up in bed with lurgy last week and didn't get much done. That and them meddling kids kept demanding attention, the bloody nerve of them wink It will make next shipment though, or can go to Yorkhill. I'll post it as soon as I can smile

Lovely pic of all the Billie's Blankets for Malawi on Facebook and twitter. Just beautiful, really amazing seeing them altogether. Heartfelt thanks to all crafters and donors. Really is something special.

Delivering all 37 to Katie at World Child Cancer tomorrow, she will be taking them over for us. Huge thanks to her too.

After tomorrow we will have a better idea about the next deadline. This really is an ongoing project, we just need to confirm dates, but we are hoping at least for another two this year.

They were honestly blown away by the love and compassion, hard work, beauty and colour. They just loved them. Met a few of their team including Jo Hopkins who is their chief executive, and they just can't thank everyone enough.

Liz will be taking them over to Blantyre and Lilongwe in Malawi, on April 22nd, pic of her on FB. They are all absolutely positive that the blankets are really going to spread love and comfort to the children. They also promise photos so we can see the blankets being given out and on the wards.

Really amazing that everyone has done this and a bit overwhelming.

Bless MrsDV and her beautiful, inspirational Billie

Heartfelt thanks once again X

Katie from World Child Cancer has written a piece we've put in Blog on our website. linky here You will find out more about the children who will receive our Billie's Blankets and their hospitals and project in Malawi. Do have a look.

Earlier on today World Child Cancer wrote a message on the Billie's Blankets for Malawi FB album, they said.....

We can't wait to get these out to our project in Malawi - we know the children there will appreciate these blankets so much! Woolly Hugs showing them that they think the same as us - No Child Should Suffer

We couldn't agree more.

KnottyLocks Mon 15-Apr-13 19:47:43

We really couldn't agree more .

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 21-Apr-13 08:16:47

Morning brew

Tomorrow our Billie's Blankets fly off to Malawi. How amazing is that? Amazing and rather mind blowing!

SoupDragon Sun 21-Apr-13 08:52:46

I am (slowly) making one that has one stripe of every colour of Stylecraft I own.

It will be so tasteful and understated.

Especially if I actually manage to fit Jaffa and Bright Green in to it grin

SoupDragon Sun 21-Apr-13 08:53:23

Oh, and it will be bigger than normal so good for an older child.

KnottyLocks Sun 21-Apr-13 16:50:07

We very much look forward to seeing that, Soupy grin

<hunts out sunglasses>

bluesky Mon 22-Apr-13 19:30:34

oooh soupy I've been enjoying crocheting with jaffa this weekend! Love it! It's a 1980s neon spectacular .... get ready for it's arrival ...
