We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

thanks thanks thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters thanks

* Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

* Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

* If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

* If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks

Today is International Baby and Pregnancy loss Awareness Day.

Every year on this day candles are lit across the globe to remember all the babies that have died during pregnancy, at, during or after birth. We will be joining this later on, and go further, we light ours to remember all children lost.

The aim is to create a 24 hour wave of light across the world. If you can, please light a candle at 7pm where you are and let it burn for an hour. Then we will have a whole day with candles burning in memory of all the children gone too soon, always loved, and always missed. xxx

With the summer holidays looming we're thinking it's wise to ask for a Pause in Posting to us between July 22nd and Sept 1st, as with holidays and trips out etc, neither of us can guarantee there will be anyone able to take woolly treasures in, nor will we necessarily be able to acknowledge safe arrivals and say thank you. And we'd rather treasure stays with you, than gets stranded in the sorting office.

We hope this is OK. Thank you so much everyone. thanks

Not insensitive at all lovely, the Brompton play it all very close, but we need to be practical iyswim?

We are going to do a special thank you for the response to our rally. We were worried we weren't going to have enough for this collection, we have been blessed with so many more. Having committed to the Brompton, we can't bear to think of any family who needs having to go without now.

Huge hugs M, you are fabulous thanks xx

Mhw02 Tue 09-Jun-15 17:48:03

Sorry sad I didn't mean to be insensitive. Was just thinking about how you'd been short for this collection and then people had rallied to send them in. I knew lots had been sent in since you appealed...

KnottyAndPistey Tue 09-Jun-15 09:27:46

Morning brew thanks

Not sure in total, but we send 25 every four months, that's approx what they need sad Although they really don't like to talk about numbers publicly of course, for them it needs to be all about hope.

We don't send more than that as for them it is storage, but they can always call on us. So we are so grateful to have enough for at least the next two if not three deliveries. We also do like to have some in case folk on here ask for one for someone away from our Brompton project.

We are so grateful to everyone, can't really say how much tbh thanks

Mhw02 Sun 07-Jun-15 14:22:22

So how many blankets arrived for this collection in the end?

KnottyAndPistey Sun 07-Jun-15 12:46:47

Posted this morning. A rather portly white padded envelope is winging its way to Woolly HQ as I type smile

MrsHathaway Thu 04-Jun-15 09:47:12

Thanks for the update. I can't finish by Saturday unless I bunk off work which is tempting because I'm much slower than I thought. Should I post once I've finished or would it be more helpful to hold on to it until the beginning of October? Might manage another by then too.

PurpleFrog Thu 04-Jun-15 09:36:39

A few people have asked on Facebook what pattern I have used for this blanket. It is a free pattern from Ravelry called "Beautiful shells blanket" by Lahoma Nally-Kaye. Link for Ravelry users It also looks lovely in rounds of different colours.

KnottyAndPistey - please feel free to post this info on Facebook.

SpiralArchitect Wed 03-Jun-15 11:30:05

I've popped it in a WW organza bag for an extra layer of protection and for you to reuse as well flowers

KnottyAndPistey Wed 03-Jun-15 11:08:09

Yes please, usual address, last posting is June 6th actually, they will go to the Brompton on 16th

Thank you so much thanks

SpiralArchitect Wed 03-Jun-15 10:48:38

I finished mine - turned out to be a pattern that knits up really quickly! smile

So, from the above comments, posting tomorrow will get it there in time, yes? Am assuming it's the usual address...

I should definitely make the October date! My crochet has had to take a back seat to other things recently, but I do want to keep going with Woolly Hug projects.

KnottyAndPistey Wed 03-Jun-15 09:50:00

Hey there, thank you so much, the next deadline is June 6th yes, but sadly we all know this is an ongoing project and the following deadline will be Saturday 24th October.

Thank you, we will love it and very warmly receive it whenever it arrives. thanks

Hi, I did start an Angel Hug, but I'm not going to finish it by the 6th, is that still the last posting date for this batch? I will keep it going in any case.
