Daily Telegraph prints article telling women to STFU about DV because it's attention-seeking

here

There's a comment underneath pointing out that when Nigella Lawson is the victim of DV, everyone is shocked and outraged on her behalf, but when this opera singer is, (working class, outsider) she's called an attention seeker.

I'm not sure - I thought it might also be to do with the fact that no-one can deny Nigella was attacked by Saatchi because he did it in public. It's basically sharia standards - unless it's witnessed by at least 4 men, we can dismiss the claim and say it's just women being hysterical attention seekers.

This is disgusting! How dare he?? And what on earth is his point? Why did he write this in the first place? But mostly HOW DARE HE???

Amrapaali Fri 05-Jul-13 09:07:50

Ewww...But more than disgust, I feel scared. I fear that more men than not think DV is just another thing women get hysterical about.

PavlovtheCat Fri 05-Jul-13 09:08:01

What a nobber. I am not a journo so I don't have to be eloquent. Oh, then nor is he! It's attitudes like that stop women from speaking out against domestic abuse within relationships either at the time or after their relationship has ended and they have felt able to do so without fear of reprisals, for fear of not being believed, or having the abuse minimised.

"explosive exasperation of a standard matrimonial kind"

hmmm

If that is his take on what hitting your partner is, I wonder how often he has explosive exasperation...

extracrunchy Fri 05-Jul-13 09:20:42

"Standard"...

wem Fri 05-Jul-13 09:21:40

The worst thing is that he isn't saying she's claiming that he hit her in a bid for attention. He believes her, dismisses it as standard matrimonial behaviour, and thinks she's attention seeking because she's talked about it. I can easily believe that men/people out there feel like this, but I can't believe newspapers can't see what they're saying when they print shit like this.

FasterStronger Fri 05-Jul-13 09:24:10

what a horrible man.

scallopsrgreat Fri 05-Jul-13 09:25:11

Awful piece of misogyny

There is a rebuttal here on the End Victim Blaming website

extracrunchy Fri 05-Jul-13 09:30:43

The journalist is clearly an absolute arse but how did this get through sub editing, editing etc?? At least 3 other people were complicit and had the power not to publish it!

BasilBabyEater Fri 05-Jul-13 09:59:23

Which leads one to believe that lots of people at the Telegraph are in favour of DV not being a crime.

GrimmaTheNome Fri 05-Jul-13 10:07:24

>And what on earth is his point? Why did he write this in the first place?
Its a bid for attention - hey, he's got a thread on MN. And its silly, and sad.

What a hort

TheDoctrineOfAllan Fri 05-Jul-13 11:29:05

What a horrible sneery article about everyone he's writing about as well.

Yes that was what I thouvht wem. It's only the sort of slap every husband gives his wife - nothing out of the ordinary. Chilling.

ndeplume Fri 05-Jul-13 11:36:26

I have name changed for this.

I was at school with the author of that article & he was very mysogonistic even at 17!

I am not surprised by what he said but appalled that it was allowed to be published.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent Fri 05-Jul-13 11:37:05

Oh, her being slapped by H is all okay because she is "working class". Weird article.

LurcioLovesFrankie Fri 05-Jul-13 11:49:15

Only small plus point I can see is that most of those commenting have called him on his appalling misogyny, class prejudice and dreadful attitude to minimalising DV. Telegraph readers have just gone up a bit in my estimation.

So, this is one instance when "don't look at the comments!" might not apply? That does restore some faith.

Eyesunderarock Fri 05-Jul-13 12:52:20

Did you notice this slant as well?
I noticed it because I looked for it because I knew it would be there.

'Alagna is now said to be enjoying the company of another eastern European soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, while Gheorghiu has admitted a romance with Cézar, a flamboyant Romanian counter-tenor, 15 years younger than she is, who represented his country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

No mention of the fact that Kurzak is 14 years younger than Alagne.
It is a misogynistic piece from a very unpleasant point of view. Targeted towards an audience that would understand and sympathise.

Arrghhhhhhhhh!

My eyes, my eyes!

There were a few supportive comments, but a similar number that seemed to say "right on, chap" or suggest it was a cynical attempt to get publicity to boost ticket sales. shock

Quangle Fri 05-Jul-13 12:53:46

bloody hell. When the comments are more reasonable than the article you know something's wrong. What an absolute idiot. Snide as well.

LurcioLovesFrankie Fri 05-Jul-13 13:24:47

Buffy - didn't mean they were all reasonable, just that enough were (more than half, I'd say) that I felt just a little bit better. But I've seen articles where 100% of below-the-line comments were misogynist trolls (mostly CIF, admittedly, which seems to attract every misogynist in the whole world).

Eyes - yes, the age gap. God, the article ticked just about every box in the women-hater's handbook, didn't it?

Yes Lurcio it was heartening to read many of them. The others... hmm

Actually though, I don't think any of the comments was even close to the article itself. That says something...

Quangle Fri 05-Jul-13 13:35:02

CIF is amazing isn't it? It doesn't fit with the stereotype of a guardian reader.

There was an article recently about what it's like to go through menopause and manage the symptoms while holding down a stressful job. Cue the usual idiots ranting....How on earth do men get to have an opinion on what it's like to go through the menopause confused? Maybe the clue's in the name grin

menopause grin

TheDoctrineOfAllan Fri 05-Jul-13 17:19:26

Yeah, the age gap comment was part of the general hatefulness of it.

GoshAnneGorilla Sat 06-Jul-13 20:22:30

Urrgh! That piece is more disgusting then maggoty cat poo.
