She can't act, she can't sing, but who cares - she walks like Rihanna.

I know it's only a bloody pop song, but it seems to be everywhere and is bugging the hell out of me. I can't even verbalise why - I suppose it's glorifying a woman who has a sexy walk, but isn't "much good for anything else".

WoTmania Tue 18-Jun-13 17:39:39

Ken Bruce introduced it in a scathing way a couple of weeks ago. I truly loved him at that moment.
It is an awful song. I detest it too.

I heard it for the first time today and couldn't believe what I was hearing. It makes me weep for the DD's as they grow up and have to content with this kind of crap. Its the pits.

thefirstmrsrochester Tue 18-Jun-13 17:47:20

It's by 'Blue' isn't it? Between them they don't have a pair of brain cells to rub together.
Shit song, shit sentiment, shit band.

DeathByTray Tue 18-Jun-13 17:47:48

Well, that's 3.34 minutes of my life I won't be getting back.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Tue 18-Jun-13 17:57:34

Oh, and based on the video she is also fairly stupid. And has got to the position of Director by everyone fancying her? Is that the joke of recycling all those boy band video cliches.

Awful, just awful.

4LittleBubbles Tue 18-Jun-13 18:04:44

The meaning is shit, but catchy tune...

MardyBra Tue 18-Jun-13 18:12:37

That's the problem 4little. I've got a bloody earworm of it.

DoctorAnge Tue 18-Jun-13 18:16:56

Doesn't she end the video in her underwear hmm

Snazzywaitingforsummer Tue 18-Jun-13 18:17:47

Rihanna's walk had never struck me as the most fascinating thing even for fans of hers. In fact I don't think I have ever seen her walking anywhere in any video. <literal>. I do dislike the idea that her public image is one to aspire to.

GerardWay Tue 18-Jun-13 18:18:08

It's by The Wanted. 5 hormonal young men that probably have one thing on their mind. <<Just joking>>.

MatersMate Tue 18-Jun-13 18:21:53

Rihanna can sing and dance as well as walk though. hmm she's worked really hard to get where she is, not something everyone wants to aspire to, but surely better than just a wiggly walk.

Bloody terrible, and yes, it makes me worry for my DD too sad

RainboxFX Tue 18-Jun-13 18:34:23

"She can't sing, she can't dance, but who cares, she validates the heterosexual male gaze" didn't scan as well.

SplitHeadGirl Tue 18-Jun-13 18:53:27

Yes, my (wonderful, feminist-ally) husband made a point of asking me what I thought of it last night and I said 'It's a pile of crap'!

He laughed and said he knew I would say that...I wasn't TOO sure why I KNEW it was crap as I hadn't heard it properly, but that I thought it basically stated that a woman's abilities/talents/personality do not matter, and even are ok to be commented negatively upon, as long as she looks the even compares her, loud and clear, to another woman, a popstar, which is criminal!!! She is a fucking person in her own right!!!!

The Wanted I think have made misogynist comments so no surprise they put out a shite song like this.

JuicyShops Tue 18-Jun-13 18:57:01

Hang on a minute is this song not about a girl who can't sing or dance but holds herself confidently (anyway)!! Think you have all missed the point!!!

northender Tue 18-Jun-13 19:01:39

I was going to post about this tonight. I heard Ken Bruce this morning slating the song with comments like "Have we not moved on at all?". He soared in my estimation but then it was the point in the show where Jeremy Vine comes on to talk about his show and his response to KB's comments was something like this "Well a couple of weeks ago we had Rod Stewart on the show and he had a young female musician with him with a skirt no bigger than a postage stamp". My blood pressure rose and I wanted to yell at the radio wtf has that got to do with anything

Stupid bloody song anyway in response to the OP!

SplitHeadGirl Tue 18-Jun-13 19:04:08

So she is confident because she looks a certain way?? Or WALKS a certain way?? I read the lyrics and they say nothing about her as a woman at all. Nothing. Just that she moves in a way that men that is all that matters and enough for men to want to be with her. It is pretty bad about men too in that way!!!

SplitHeadGirl Tue 18-Jun-13 19:05:29

I love Ken Bruce. He is one man who took being father of a daughter VERY seriously.

MardyBra Tue 18-Jun-13 20:12:02

I can't help wondering how this would have gone if I'd posted in AIBU. I would imagine I would have been handed a few grips by now. grin

MardyBra Tue 18-Jun-13 20:12:37

I'm pleased to hear the Ken Bruce comments. Jeremy Vine is just the DM on legs really isn't he?

doctorsnoddy Tue 18-Jun-13 20:14:42

our local radio station gave it an ageist slant - doing a version called "She walks like me nanna". Lots of references to dentures etc

SplitHeadGirl Tue 18-Jun-13 21:29:29

Lol @ Mardy....I Like AIBU but some of the posters have NO idea about feminism!

isitsnowingyet Tue 18-Jun-13 21:39:34

I heard that song today and thought exactly the same as OP and swore roundly at the radio in the car - as yer do. It made me mad because it didn't seem to take any account of the speech/thoughts/personality of the woman who walked like Rihanna

TheDoctrineOfAllan Tue 18-Jun-13 22:07:12

grin at RainboxFX.

YoniBottsBumgina Tue 18-Jun-13 22:17:14

It is fucking depressing and so blatant.

grumpyinthemorning Wed 19-Jun-13 09:21:01

I uses to quite like the wanted, but this...they need to sack their songwriter.

namechangeguy Wed 19-Jun-13 11:51:43

I went to see Blondie in concert last night. They were brilliant, brought the house down. Now Debbie Harry, to boys in the late 70's like me, was a definite sex symbol. But I don't remember her posing endlessly with her tits and arse hanging out. There was some posing and pouting, but Hutchence and Jagger did that too, it is part of their act/stage show. Blondie were also part of the punk era. Lots of bands, some of them crap, some brilliant, many of them with female leads and musicians. And a lot of them with something to say politically.

I am afraid that young people today have to carry the can at least partly for the utter crap that the likes of Rihanna and her contemporaries put out. They are the ones financing this rubbish.

StickEmUpPunk Wed 19-Jun-13 19:15:08

So why do we think, NCG, that the likes of Rhianna get ahead and put this stuff out?
What is the driving force behind this kind of music/aesthetic?
(rhetorical, but tell us anyway)

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa Wed 19-Jun-13 23:28:40

I seriously thought this song was a parody of something when I heard it. It's just so cringy and desperate. No subtlety...though I spose that's a good think. It's out-and-proud sexist crap.

There's a line in it 'and all the boys they crowd around a woo ooh ' and it just counjours up this vile/ hysterical image for me of a tone-deaf, dad-dancing, wiggly bummed woman surrounded by baying, slobbery men. Bleurgh.

Guess I'm not their target audience grin

BanjoPlayingTiger Wed 19-Jun-13 23:34:01

Ohhh, I had a good old rant about this song the other day in the car. My poor dh got quite an earful despite agreeing with me.
Why is there so much emphasis on womens appearance? It drives me quite mad.

TeiTetua Thu 20-Jun-13 00:34:35

Don't be so quick to blame the youngsters. "Under My Thumb" has been around a very long time and the Rolling Stones (who are old enough to know better) still perform it.

Sss, Siamese cat of a girl. Under my thumb. She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world. Etc etc.

namechangeguy Thu 20-Jun-13 09:33:07

Tei, I am not pretending that every piece of music prior to 1990 was perfect grin. But I think the Stones sang about wider issues as well.

Punk, this stuff gets pumped out because the target audience buys into it. It's a bit like the newspapers - by and large we get the press that we deserve. And whatever external factors there are - misogyny, rape culture, sexualisation of just about anything - at some point individuals have to take responsibility for where they spend their money. It isn't all one way.

Sausageeggbacon Thu 20-Jun-13 11:26:27

NCG Listen to Paint it Black where Jagger is fighting his urges to rape possibly a lot worse lyrically than a group of boys thinking with their trousers too tight and thus starving their brains of oxygen.

namechangeguy Thu 20-Jun-13 11:56:25

Sausage - according to Wikipedia, Jagger says that the lyrics to Paint it Black are about a girl's funeral. Perhaps his referral to turning his head away from the girls is because they remind him of the dead girl?

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Thu 20-Jun-13 13:37:45

Oh, you lot, I need a word with you.

For the last two sodding days I have been walking round singing this song. But not just the song, oh no, what I now have stuck in my head is RainbowFx's new improved version. You can make it scan if you ditch 'heterosexual'....

RainboxFX Thu 20-Jun-13 15:02:43

Sorry Amanda grin If it helps, DH is getting fed up of hearing me sing it as well. It doesn't help that it's an awful song and I hate it and everything it stands for, but it IS damn catchy...

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Thu 20-Jun-13 15:58:44

Damn catchy. But not as catchy as "she can't sing, she can't dance, but who cares, she validates the male gaze" grin

Does anyone else suspect that it was originally "she looks like Rhianna", and changed to try and make it more user friendly to their (young!) audience? Just that walking does seem an odd thing to pick up on- and "looks" would have been an even worse lyric, so maybe someone tried to "improve" it?

StickEmUpPunk Thu 20-Jun-13 16:09:24

NCG very well side stepped. You're a clever poster. wink

It's been said on this board what controls the mainstream, even when women are involved. Don't be niave dude. Or think I don't know.
Or that no one else does grin

Back to the video, the worst bit I thought was the water bottle being squeezed, and the water coming out, such an obvious phallic reference. And to the grossest bit of straight sex in my opinion.
Only the penis holder benefits from the 'squidge'

StickEmUpPunk Thu 20-Jun-13 16:14:29

the male gaze

That's it! I couldnt be arsed to go into all of it but that pretty much sums it up.

The bit I read about the female gaze is still only a distorted version of the male.
Now that's a head fuck. But very true
