"When a woman says no she means maybe" Come and support those in chat who aren't happy about this sign in a shop

MrsMushroom Mon 25-Feb-13 23:05:22

here is the thread

A MNr began the thread when she came across This monstrosity

Someone else googled and found it in this shop.

Please can you lot email the shop? I have sent an email explaining why they need to remove it from their stock. Can you lot too?

gallicgirl Mon 25-Feb-13 23:09:31

There's an option to post online reviews.

I think keep it simple.

"It's offensive and promotes mixed messages which could threaten a woman's safety. No means no. Please consider removing this crass item from stock".

I would be horrified if my loved one presented me with that, and as for a wedding gift - it practically says marital rape is permissable!

MrsMushroom Mon 25-Feb-13 23:11:54

I didn't want to register...so have emailed...others from the chat thread have too and I think they'll find a lot of emails more in your face than reviews. They have a FB page too and I've suggested that unless they take it off then we hit that tomorrow evening.

MrsMushroom Mon 25-Feb-13 23:12:39

What you wrote was similar to that which I wrote...except you did it in less words and were far more articulate!

LineRunner Mon 25-Feb-13 23:13:15

Crap sign. Where's the email address?

gallicgirl Mon 25-Feb-13 23:16:11

We really need to know who the manufacturer is though.

I shall keep an eye open for it in local shops - it's the sort of thing they love to sell.

MrsMushroom Mon 25-Feb-13 23:17:14

I asked them to email me with who manufactures it GallicGirl...I thought they might tell not incase they offend them....but I want to know too.

AnyFucker Mon 25-Feb-13 23:19:36

Offensive crap. Who the hell thinks this is amusing ?

CardinalRichelieu Mon 25-Feb-13 23:19:45

Apparently it would make 'an unusual wedding gift'. No shit.

How about "When a woman says no you would be well advised to assume that she does in fact mean no otherwise you may face criminal liability under s1 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003." ?

gallicgirl Mon 25-Feb-13 23:21:44

Very pithy. I am very tempted to use that exact phrase.

MrsMushroom Mon 25-Feb-13 23:25:58

I like that Cardinal! Please say that in the email!

I just looked at their FB and it's very unprofessional. Not much activity...only 88 likes and pics of small local craft fairs they've participated in so my bet is that this is a small, newish business. Loads of women in the pics..browsing their goods for sale...makes me BOIL that they probably get 90% of their business from women and yet ram this shit on their shelves without a thought.

gallicgirl Mon 25-Feb-13 23:28:27

whoever checks emails in the morning will wonder what the hell has been happening!

LuisGarcia Mon 25-Feb-13 23:47:57

Email sent with Cardinals line in it.

CardinalRichelieu Tue 26-Feb-13 00:24:52

One of the many things that pisses me off when people say/imply that no doesn't always mean no re sex is the fact that it is down in black and white, in law, that it in fact does. It isn't up for argument.

This sign manages to be offensive on at least two levels: firstly, the one we've been discussing (implying that women don't mean what they say re consent to sex) and secondly that only 'ladies' (meaning nice girls) pretend not to enjoy sex. Because actually wanting to have sex with your partner is clearly the behaviour of a complete slapper, isn't it? How perfectly charming.

And putting an offensive statement in cutesy 1950s format does not make it 'OK' or 'ironic', whatever they may have intended.

Startail Tue 26-Feb-13 00:52:34

WTF, I can't think where on earth you could display that!

I think I find the 'ladies' don't enjoy sex more insulting than the first bit and the first bit is dangerous trash.

SirBoobAlot Tue 26-Feb-13 00:56:37

Fucking hell, furious at reading that! Complaints email going off in the morning. GAH.

Darkesteyes Tue 26-Feb-13 01:07:09

What a disgustiing sign Agree with Cardinal and Startail. It contains a nasty rape apologist message AND the myth that women shouldnt enjoy or like sex. So two nasty messages there for the price of one.

Did anyone see those nasty Valentine cards that Paperchase did Charming messages like Your Hole is My Goal.
I meant to start a thread on here at the time but got caught up in RL.

sashh Tue 26-Feb-13 04:56:46

This is their facebook page, I post there.

MrsMushroom Tue 26-Feb-13 07:21:53

We were going to give them a chance to respond to the emails before posting on their FB page...just to give us a weapon in case they refused to remove the sign.

Greythorne Tue 26-Feb-13 07:26:29

I just emailed this:

Are you pro-rape?

No means no.

No does not mean perhaps.

Stop selling rape-enabling tat

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Tue 26-Feb-13 09:02:49

Rape apologise and slut shaming in one cutesy item? Yuck.

LineRunner Tue 26-Feb-13 09:20:36

Yes, the sign appears to be saying if you involved in a sexual situation and you aren't being raped then you must be a slut.

PromQueenWithin Tue 26-Feb-13 10:46:34

I've emailed. Has anyone who did so yesterday had a response?

FastidiaBlueberry Tue 26-Feb-13 10:53:00

Bet they wouldn't sell lovely nostalgic racism

MajaBiene Tue 26-Feb-13 10:54:06
PromQueenWithin Tue 26-Feb-13 11:01:17

It's also here and here and Daisy Interiors on ebay.

According to this retailer it's made by a company called Homeworks but I can't find a website for them, though they do seem to several small retailer offering it on ebay

Perhaps we should contact them to ask for info about Homeworks?

MrsMushroom Tue 26-Feb-13 11:18:55

No response yet PromQUeenWIthin

MrsMushroom Tue 26-Feb-13 11:27:24

Prom could it be This collective of female designers and artists

They're called Homeworks. They have a wide collection of work by a group of women who appear to trade together under one umbrella...lots of craft fairs etc.

MusicalEndorphins Wed 27-Feb-13 01:34:16

It is off their facebook page now.

sashh Wed 27-Feb-13 03:37:30

They have removed my post from their facebook page. But they also appear to have removed the plaque from their website.

Anyone got any answers?

PromQueenWithin Wed 27-Feb-13 08:31:03

I emailed an ebay trader that sells it, asking about the supplier. His response:

"Hi , I would suspect a little factry in Indomesia. regards Mike"

Greythorne Wed 27-Feb-13 10:54:26

We've given them
A chance to respond...
Isn't it now time to go public on FB?

(On my signal, unleash hell)

PromQueenWithin Wed 27-Feb-13 10:55:12

3... 2... 1...

LittleBoxes Wed 27-Feb-13 11:01:24

MrsMushroom, I don't think it's made by the Homeworks people you linked to. It looks mass-produced to me. I suspect the ebay person is right.

LittleBoxes Wed 27-Feb-13 11:03:28

It's here too: http://www.alligatorpear.co.uk/wooden-message-plaques-a-lady-says-no.html

LuisGarcia Wed 27-Feb-13 14:19:33

CardinalRichelieu Wed 27-Feb-13 17:02:03

They have taken it down? Victory is ours.

Now to keep a look out for any more of them/any other misogynistic bullshit and kick up a similar fuss.

Yes, this is how I spend my free time (and even some of my working time).

MrsMushroom Wed 27-Feb-13 17:27:05

Yes...let's unearth them all....and if we can find the factory so much the better. We can do them a favour by letting them know how offensive the sign is. And suggest some more suitable homilies to use.

CardinalRichelieu Wed 27-Feb-13 17:32:31

See, probably no point in bothering with the factory as they will just keep making them if they get orders from shops etc. Let's just be strident whenever we see them on sale.

MrsMushroom Wed 27-Feb-13 17:44:17

Yes I was thinking though, they've already lost one client...in Dasiy Interiors...but they must sell them all over the world I suppose.

LuisGarcia Wed 27-Feb-13 17:56:59

They've lost 2 clients. The alligator pear one seems to have been withdrawn too.

LineRunner Wed 27-Feb-13 19:34:28

I think to be fair to the factory we ought to suggest some better slogans that people will buy.

Could the Pope please hand the key to the Vatican Bank to Mary Beard on his way out.

LuisGarcia Thu 28-Feb-13 01:28:18

See, probably no point in bothering with the factory as they will just keep making them if they get orders from shops etc. Let's just be strident whenever we see them on sale.

Ok, well I've found and emailed a couple more today, then found this.

I want to know who the manufacturer is.

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 09:51:24

I've contacted all the sites on this search, including ebay sellers, with a message borrowed from a post on the chat thread by tigerlilygrr:

I am writing to complain about the sign you are currently selling featuring the "if she says no she means maybe" text. I understand you may have had several complaints from Mumsnet. I wanted to add that I too find it offensive, as the clear implication is that women who say no mean yes (similar logic as that used by rapists to defend their actions), and women who say yes are behaving in a promiscuous way. This seems like a very odd message for a homewares store to promote. I'd like to ask you to consider withdrawing this item from sale.

Let's see whether and how they respond.

LuisGarcia Thu 28-Feb-13 09:57:08

Temporal Interiors are withdrawing it from sale and say they have forwarded the complaints to the manufacturer.

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 10:21:25

Well done Temporal Interiors:

Thank you for your email. This product has been removed from our shop and I have contacted our supplier with your concerns.

I have had another email of this sort with concerns which prompted me to remove prior to your email arriving.the emails I received prompted me react quickly to this matter. I trust that you find my removal of the product in question satisfactory.

It should no longer be visible on our website. If you do see it as available please let me know so that I can remove further as sometimes products on websites do get duplicated. I will also remove it from our other marketplace listings.

SirBoobAlot Thu 28-Feb-13 10:23:16

Hurrah! Well done, all.

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 11:28:19

This from Little Timbers:

"I am xxx, the owner of the business and have just read your email that I was very saddened to read.

Being the buyer of all our products, and buy many humerous and sentimental plaques from various suppliers, I had not once interpreted the mentioned plaque in this way. However, after receiving your email of concern, I can now see the implication is has to women.

As a woman myself, I have no intention to discriminate women and had I perceived the sign in the way you had at the beginning, I would not have purchased the item, it was only meant as light humour.

As soon as I read your email, I removed the plaque. I have not however, had any other complaints and if I had, this action would have been done sooner.

I really do apologise if this has offended you, or given you the wrong impression of us. I can assure you I will be more cautious with my buying in the future, our aim is to stock products that touch the heart or make you laugh, definitly not to cause distress or concern. I will also send your complaint to the company we purchased from, and hope they will see the point of view that you are coming from."

Well done Little Timbers.

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 12:34:03

And again, from Little Timbers:

"The company I buy from has also confirmed it will not produce any more of these plaques and will now discontinue.so you have had a result. I am sure that anyone in the artermath of a rape situation would be deeply offended by this plaque."

HighBrows Thu 28-Feb-13 12:36:44

Wow that's a fantastic response from Little Timbers.
Think I'll go and buy something from them now!

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 12:40:24

Really great response. They should be on the weekly roundup / Mumsnet recommends, I think!

tigerlilygrr Thu 28-Feb-13 13:08:07

Great response from little timbers. Really pleased with this result. On another note, I've never seen the feminist board before, I will be back!

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Thu 28-Feb-13 14:06:49

Well done all!

MrsMushroom Thu 28-Feb-13 14:22:28

Oooh that's bloody brilliant!

Shaky Thu 28-Feb-13 14:39:29

Good work Mumsnetters! Well done!

Aww, I've just seen this thread - what a great result.

Darkesteyes Thu 28-Feb-13 17:41:24

Well done everyone. Fantastic result.

great thread! heartening responses from the retailers.
I've just come from another (quickly deleted, well done MNHQ) thread where a troll was putting forward his "rapes are mostly false reports" ideology.

this has cheered me up.

EduCated Thu 28-Feb-13 20:45:19

Great result smile Well done those sites! Now for the rest...

Still on sale here and www.fabandfunky.co.uk/acatalog/when-a-lady.html and at an extortionate price shock

PromQueenWithin Thu 28-Feb-13 22:23:24

I emailed both those retailers this morning, but no response from them so far...

WhentheRed Thu 28-Feb-13 23:27:23

Good work all.

The quote is from Lord Denning! He said it in 1982. It is quite chilling that a senior English judge could feel comfortable making such a statement only 30 years ago. You/we can never be too complacent about standing up to such statements.

Lessthanaballpark Thu 28-Feb-13 23:48:08

Oh I've just come to this thread - I'm so impressed by the activism and the result - smile

Can't believe it is from Lord Denning - actually if they put it on the plaque that it was a quote by a senior judge that would actually show how awful it was.

CardinalRichelieu Thu 28-Feb-13 23:54:23

Denning was a bit crazy. He just randomly invented bits of law. The senior judiciary tend to be about 30 years behind the rest of us (a few exceptions).

But yes, go us.

sashh Fri 01-Mar-13 05:45:00

I've had a response from Daisy Interiors, I've put it on the original thread.

I'm not impressed.

sashh Fri 01-Mar-13 05:50:42

I've just read the positive replies on here.

I've posted them on Daisy Interiors facebook page - not sure how long they will be there.

BubblegumPie Fri 01-Mar-13 15:50:35

Aww, I'm only just reading this now, well done everyone!

gutted I didn't get to send any angry emails

EduCated Fri 01-Mar-13 19:28:52

WhenTheRed Are you sure? I thought I'd found quite an old(er) reference to it, but I may be wrong.

EduCated Fri 01-Mar-13 19:30:09

Also, had this response from The Design Company smile

We have taken on board your comments and will remove this plaque from sale immediately

We do not condone this 100% and thank you fro bringing this to our attention

Your sincerely

Matt @ the design company

StevenSeagull Fri 01-Mar-13 21:16:18

StevenSeagull Fri 01-Mar-13 21:22:31

Ok, I have inside info. I've namechanged because I'm a coward.

Homeworks is a generic label name for products commissioned and imported by a UK company that then sells them wholesale to gift shops.

Their email is sales.enquiries@hill-interiors.com

You didn't hear it from me.

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Fri 01-Mar-13 21:26:47

Bubblegum, if your angry email fingers are itching, Amazon might want to hear from you with this not-so-charming rape variation on the Keep Calm theme.

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Fri 01-Mar-13 21:27:24

Ta SS.

ediblewoman Fri 01-Mar-13 21:36:05

Oh god doctrine, I think I am going to be sick. That is terrifying.

dummad Fri 01-Mar-13 21:36:13

is that for real Doctrine - that T shirt on Amazon? That is truly sick.

ediblewoman Fri 01-Mar-13 21:43:23

I just searched for it and yes, it is real. I have asked Amazon to instruct the seller to remove it from sale.

FairyJen Fri 01-Mar-13 21:56:03

I've messages amazon as well, that thing is revolting

ediblewoman Fri 01-Mar-13 22:00:53

I have a thread in chat asking people to email too and one now in here

dummad Fri 01-Mar-13 22:04:12

Not sure what I'd do if I came across actually someone wearing that awful thing. Surely that should be a criminal offense - inciting hatred/violence or something.

BubblegumPie Fri 01-Mar-13 23:05:50

Thanks doctrine smile

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Fri 01-Mar-13 23:09:40

I think Amazon doesn't check too closely what its third party suppliers put up - a couple of years ago they had some other awful ones which seem to be gone (MNers helped with posting reviews and emailing complaints)

sashh Sat 02-Mar-13 03:07:28

OK two links to amazon but the item has been removed.

What did it say? Or do I not want to know?

EduCated Sat 02-Mar-13 13:24:28

Thanks SS, I had come across Hill but haven't got round to emailing them yet.

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Sat 02-Mar-13 15:24:49
BubblegumPie Sat 02-Mar-13 15:31:48

I got a reply from Amazon just telling me that the keep calm T-shirts are no longer for sale. This is my reply:

"Good, perhaps you could consider increasing your regulations and standards on what you allow people to sell on your sites to avoid this happening again.

For example, advertised on your UK site, I am able to find the following:

T-shirts glorifying gang rape

'erotic' fiction perpetuating the myth that women somehow get turned on by having their bodies violated

books detailing how to take advantage of prostituted people

I would list more but searching through the dark, twisted listings on your site is making me feel ill.
Having faced recent public scandal over tax evasion, I would think that Amazon would be keen to improve its reputation. Allowing such degrading and offensive material to be advertised on your site and indeed profiting from it is not the way to go about this.

I for one will no longer be shopping with you until you improve the regulations of products sold on your site, and I will be encouraging my family and friends to do the same."

Now I am panicking thinking that i am wrong about the tax evasion and am making a fool of myself though? They were in trouble for that weren't they???

BubblegumPie Sat 02-Mar-13 15:38:34

they were, phew weird moment of self doubt there!

Darkesteyes Sat 02-Mar-13 16:28:17

Bloody hell Bubblegum i only clicked on the "erotic fiction" link Thats horrific. Cant believe i just saw that.

BubblegumPie Sat 02-Mar-13 17:04:34

I know, it's not hard to find this sort of thing on there at all sad

SimoneDeBeaver Sat 02-Mar-13 17:15:40

just shock

INeverSaidThat Sat 02-Mar-13 17:59:35

Blimey, you have had an impact today. I am curious about how you found out about the TShirts. We're you just browsing?

Anyway, it is great that they are no longer being sold. I hope it raises everyone's consciousness in future.

Well done. thanks

Darkesteyes Sat 02-Mar-13 18:16:10

Just seen a report about the T shirts on Sky News.
Reporter said if Amazon are willing to take a tax cut then they must be willing to take some of the blame too.

MrsMushroom Sat 02-Mar-13 18:24:12

NeverSaid does it matter how they were found? I mean...if Doctrine typed in "Rape" or "Slut" then that's a good way to weed out the shit isn't it.

INeverSaidThat Sat 02-Mar-13 18:40:08

no, it doesn't matter how Doctrine came across them. I was genuinely just curious. smile

SocialClimber Sat 02-Mar-13 19:03:35

Those slogans are the tip of the iceberg. No computer generated "statistically, 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape."

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Sat 02-Mar-13 19:19:33

Hi INeed

It's because a while ago there was a thread on here about t-shirts like the " 9 out of 10" one that SocialClimber just mentioned

So I did a search on Amazon ("rape tshirt") to see if it had been removed - "9 out of 10" didn't come up which I was pleased about, thinking it had been taken off (but prematurely as Social has now found it)... However, one of the Search results was the Keep Calm one angry. Hence my p

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Sat 02-Mar-13 19:19:43

SocialClimber Sat 02-Mar-13 19:35:37

I don't even have to look for the 9 out of 10 one. I went to Amazon's Twitter page and it was right there as one if their adverts.

I posted on the Page 3 page on FB, but I don't know if that's still available to view now. I don't particularly want to type it in either to check.

SocialClimber Sat 02-Mar-13 19:36:05

INeverSaidThat Sat 02-Mar-13 20:02:33

That is amazing Doctrine, Can you tell your friends and family or do you keep your MN persona private? It must be very satisfying to have, literally, brought this to the attention of such a huge number of people.

thanks wine.

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub Sat 02-Mar-13 20:53:00

Ah, no, I keep it private. I did email myself a couple of the news links though for posterity grin

thanks to edible and all the retweeters as I don't really tweet and that's been where this has all snowballed.

Darkesteyes Sat 02-Mar-13 21:22:25

Back at you Doctrine and Edible and the rest. thanks thanks wine wine

FloraFox Sat 02-Mar-13 23:09:37

Well done Doctrine and everyone. It's quite amazing how quickly this developed and was resolved. Pats on the back to everyone! wine and thanks

ediblewoman Sat 02-Mar-13 23:45:55

And you Doctrine, smile thanks I am just overwhelmed at the result, it feels amazing to know that grass roots activism can have such an immediate impact. I just hope that the conversation in the media carries on.

Just so people are still aware, this site:

and this site:

are STILL selling that plaque!! angry

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Sun 03-Mar-13 01:57:10

Well done mumsnetters, great to see what an effect people can have so speedily - wonder if the remaining two retailers are lagging behind because of general tech slowness, or if they really are pro women hating foulness.

Thanks for this positive thread and action, in comparison to the unpleasant trollery around tonight, this shows me that for every lone misogynist posting vile hatred from his bedroom, there are strong dignified women keeping up the truth. Thanks, really mean it.

duchesse Sun 03-Mar-13 02:08:59

I'd quite like a sign that says

"When a woman says no she means "Try that again and see if you like a knee in the nuts""

It's not very catchy though.

FriedSprout Sun 03-Mar-13 08:17:42

Media had picked up on it, just caught something on classic fm's 8.00am news.

MrsMushroom Sun 03-Mar-13 13:47:41

Oh I thought they might Fried. After all...they're bloody shocking and I can't believe people would buy them for their shops!

"It sounded quite profound."

WHAT? WHERE? HOW? How did that sound profound??? Maybe if you're an ignorant CHILD with no idea of the meaning of the word you could mistake it for profound...but that's doing children a disservice isn't it?

As for "letting it run down." he should replace that with "We're planning on infecting more minds with the abusive message because we don't want to lose money."

I think it's a shit response really. All platitudes and no action.

BinarySolo Mon 04-Mar-13 15:10:07

As you are obviously aware, this is a famous saying, not something we have come up with.

Is it? I'd not heard it before. Lame excuse anyway, I could use the same argument to make plaques with hitler quotes.

ElephantsAndMiasmas Mon 04-Mar-13 17:06:25

BubblegumPie Mon 04-Mar-13 17:11:10

YES! this is still being sold.

HoneyKate Mon 04-Mar-13 17:14:26

I have emailed Hill Interiors and A Shop of Dreams who both seem to still have this hideous item available for sale or at least it is still appearing on their websites.

MrsMushroom Mon 04-Mar-13 17:30:20

Darkesteyes Mon 04-Mar-13 17:55:27

Profound PROFOUND! <head desk>

So how did YOU view the plaque, Sophie?

Sophie we don't want any money or discounts from you, we just wanted you to remove the plaque, which you have done, so thank you. I hope you use better judgement next time when purchasing merchandise for your store, no matter how 'profound' or 'pretty' something may be. hmm

Hopefully Shop of Dreams will reply soon.

Floweryhat Mon 04-Mar-13 21:27:26

Never pass up an opportunity to generate new business eh Sophie?

After all, all publicity is good publicity hmm. Sigh.

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 05-Mar-13 17:59:03

Hello there

You'll see we have removed Sophie's post, as we don't allow organisations to post as 'themselves' on Mumsnet. We've offered to post up a statement by the company on its behalf.

We've also, at their request, removed the post quoting email responses from Hill Interiors and Baytree Interiors.

Hello, I'm bumping this thread as I've just seen this horrid sign in a garden shop here in NZ. I approached the manager to complain, here is an abridged version of our coversation:

Me - I find this sign very offensive.
Manager - Oh those signs? We just buy them from the importer, I don't even read them.
Me - That's not really an excuse. You are stocking these offensive items and they are associated with your image and your brand.
Manager - I think that they are just funny.
Me - I don't find jokes about rape funny. And anyway, I thought you hadn't read the sign?
Manager - I've just read it now. I don't think that it is offensive. People find it funny.
Me - You seriously think that it is acceptable to have jokes about rape on a sign?
Manager - I can't withdraw all products that people complain about. I have people in here all the time complaining because I sell buddhas.
Me - That is not the same thing. Sexual assualt is a crime.
Manager - Are you sure that you are not being oversensitive because of your personal experience?

I was completely speechless at this last remark. I was so angry, I had to leave before saying something I regretted.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I could do next? I could write a letter, but I don't think that it will make any difference.

I should add, the manager was a 50 year old woman, if that makes any difference.

Tell us which shop, and we can all write and complain?

Yes and we could also inform your local newspaper, whilst directing the shop owner to this site.

You could try the Retail Association and complain under the Sexual Harassment provisions in the Human Rights act.

How anyone can think this is ok is beyond me. That last comment that woman made to you Rodent, wtf!

I know Little, that comment was beyond the pale.

Thank you also Jacq, Mary and Slug for taking the time to respond. What I've decided to do is to write formally to the manager of the store and ask her to remove the product from stock. I have also obtained the name of the wholesaler and I will be contacting them too.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Good luck Rodent and well done for taking a stand.
