Suggestions for a feminist Godwin's Law.

I have only been on Mumsnet for a couple of days, but reading a few threads here leads me to believe that feminism needs an equivalent to Godwin's law, hopefully it would be another weapon in our armoury when faced with derailments on feminist issues.

A few triggers for this new law might be, for example:

Hysterical women.
It happens to men too.
Porn's not bad because...
It's feminine empowerment.

Also what would we call it?

feministefatale Fri 01-Feb-13 20:25:39

I suppose it would have to be called Rm's law

Would man haters be on the list or is it covered by misandry?

What about "prosex feminst" to imply that other feminists who don't poll dance hate sex?

RM76 Fri 01-Feb-13 20:34:41

Love it, no I think 'man haters' could stand alone, ha, ha, 'prosex feminist'.

It shouldn't be named after me (and anyway RMs 'not my name', to quote an annoying song) maybe it's because I don't have dingly, dangly bits that I don't need to have everything named after me.

feministefatale Fri 01-Feb-13 20:40:44

Godwins (whoever he is) has been dining out on it for 20 years, I think you should take your claim to fame where you can it wink

feministefatale Fri 01-Feb-13 20:41:01

can get it

RM76 Fri 01-Feb-13 20:47:02

Maybe it's the feinting female in me, we mustn't push ourselves forward, we might upset the men.
In which case if it were named after me it should be M********'s law, but then ironically I took my husband's name so that means it would be his name, but then it was conversations with him that led to the thread so...
Argh, I am a betrayer of all womankind! Buggar.confused

feministefatale Fri 01-Feb-13 20:53:17

The feminist quandary grin

I nearly fell for that grin

RM76 Fri 01-Feb-13 21:04:44

Sorry, I meant fainting, it wasn't some devious woman trick.

RM76 Fri 01-Feb-13 21:47:15

Just an extra idea, perhaps it could actually be more like bingo. Each Misogynist trope gets a number, and when we've spotted them all in one thread we get to call 'Misogynist Bingo', do you think MN would be up for organising prizes?
I'll shut up now.

I play poker on some threads.

'I see your Feminazi and raise you Two Empowered Lap Dancers.'

Unfortunately the word 'feminist' is itself a Godwin's Law in many situations. It is especially used against young women by young men. No need for Feminazi or ball breaker or any of the rest. 'Feminist' is now a gendered insult. Good blog here.

RM76 Tue 05-Feb-13 04:12:51

Really good blog, thanks. Will bookmark.
You're so right about the word feminist, but I will stubbornly continue to use it, I will NOT be silenced by those creeps.
Although it would be nice if feminists could have a new name, like 'The Sherbet Dip Dabs', you couldn't demonise that, and 'The Sherbet Dip Dabzis' just wouldn't work.
Then again the MRM could demonise anything, they're just horrible.
Maybe we could give them a new name? 'The Poo heads', I mean they're too stupid to have a cool evil name.
Sorry for rambling, bored and tired, insomnia sucks bum!

Chubfuddler Tue 05-Feb-13 05:14:26

I was just going to suggest the old "lap dancers are all phd students doing it for shits and giggles" but lineruner beat me to it.

The other would have to be "men suffer DV too". Yes they do. That is sad and wrong. Go and be angry about it somewhere relevant.

NormaStanleyFletcher Tue 05-Feb-13 05:32:51

go and be angry somewhere relevant

Yy to that

RM76 Tue 05-Feb-13 05:38:41

I know It's a bit tangential but, can anyone tell me why the media are so obsessed with opening doors?
It seems every time the word feminist is mentioned, door opening becomes the issue of the day.
Yes I want the door opening, yes I'm a feminist, surely EVERYONE should open doors for EVERYONE else, isn't that just polite?

TheSmallClanger Tue 05-Feb-13 10:44:50

Yes, opening doors - "the death of chivalry" and "women just want it both ways".

Does "women's brains are hard-wired for nurturing. Why won't you just accept that?" fit here?

msrisotto Tue 05-Feb-13 10:48:24

YY Smallclanger, I was coming on here to say the same - pink brain vs blue brain bullshit.

drjohnsonscat Tue 05-Feb-13 13:11:21

hullygully, how dare you say that. It's outrageous. wink

Linerunner, I agree. I always think "I love women" is a surefire indication of a misogynist. I went off Howard Jacobson when I heard him on the radio respond to accusations of misogyny in his books with "How could I be a misogynist? I love women".

LineRunner Tue 05-Feb-13 13:56:40

"You don't look like a feminist"

Hullygully Tue 05-Feb-13 13:58:55

Oh I love that one Line, one of my faves.

I don't do [insert choice if wax fanjo / wear high heels / go to lap dancing clubs / etc] because of male pressure! I do it because I like it!

Hullygully Tue 05-Feb-13 15:35:07

you can't keep a good woman down (in the cellar) feministe grin

feministefatale Tue 05-Feb-13 15:52:41

grin hully

grey they don't wax because they like it, they wax because it's hygienic- hairy fanjos are disgusting!

RM76 Tue 05-Feb-13 17:14:17

And, of course, the old kitchen joke.

If you check out any drumming videos featuring women on youtube, this is quite literally every other message, amongst much worse. Apparently I'm a man hater for wanting to play the drums!

The best Internet thread I have ever witnessed was of a girl in a drumming competition (she was awesome) all the usual oh so original kitchen jokes followed, but also the best Troll slap down I have ever seen:

Troll: What kind of a kitchen is that?

Troll killer: The kind where her dick is bigger than yours, maybe you should
make her a sandwich!

Made my year!

RM76 Tue 05-Feb-13 17:16:47

Sorry, kitchen 'joke'.

RM76 Tue 05-Feb-13 17:17:48

Hully so glad you're back!

mummybare Tue 05-Feb-13 17:37:36

This has to be a drinking game, surely?

It happens to men too... Drink!
Feminists have no sense of humour... DRINK!
I choose to be completely hairless because I feel cleaner that way... DRIIIINNNK

LineRunner Tue 05-Feb-13 18:13:27

Oh, go on, then.

"Well you haven't convinced me, so there can't be much to it." wine

LineRunner Tue 05-Feb-13 19:44:40

Kaboom! gringringringringrin That's a great comeback.

I love all the misogyny bingo quotes, they're brilliant.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved Tue 05-Feb-13 21:43:06

'but feminism is about CHOICE so you can't tell women they can't choooose to be (insert awful surrendered female thing here)'

And bingo!
