Working Class Movement Library under siege

They are being attacked by the transactivists for hosting an event featuring 'hateful transphobe' Julie Bindel.

If you have time please go on and give them a review (transwhacktivists are giving them 1 star reviews) - it's great that they are being brave and not backing down on their decision to host Julie.

It's just horrifying that someone who campaigns against violence towards women and girls is being bullied in this way. They also plan to picket the event.

Thanks Madam, it's heartening to see the support that Julie is getting on FB and the petition.

God they are a low collection of people.

And so frighteningly convinced that they are right. That we are hateful and that they are on the 'right side of history' and progressive and liberal. Awful.

I hope they don't expect anyone to take their claims to struggle and oppression very seriously after this. Ditto talk of "allies".

Not just trans people.

"As a lesbian myself I say: go ahead, but don’t do it under the banner of LGBT inclusivity that defines LGBT History Month; as her divisive opinions on the rest of the community shouldn’t really be being normalised in this way."

Cis-lesbian? No, that's not a thing.

Lesbian: female homosexual.

Also, you would get torn apart on social media if you attempted to tell a natal male who identifies as a woman and wants to sleep with women that they are a "trans lesbian". Go on - try it! You will be roundly told that they are a lesbian, just like any other lesbian.

well- there are the men who call themselves lesbians Hmm

Trans ideology is homophobic to its core. Have made a modest donation. It's not much but it's solid proof of solidarity.

The comments on the event facebook page are just disgusting.

Anyone who voices the mildest support of Julie Bindel speaking is currently being called a hateful old cunt by a transwoman. I'm not paraphrasing. That's this person's favourite phrase. They are currently calling Miranda Yardley a nonce, a child abuser, and, again, a hateful old cunt.

And people are getting on board with this and saying that Miranda, and others who support Julie being allowed to speak deserve this. It's quite the most despicable thing I've seen online in a long time. Julie Bindel saying that trans ideology can be harmful to women's rights is literal violence, awful hate speech, mustn't be allowed! Calling women hateful old cunts and accusing people of being child abusers with no evidence? Legitimate political protest!

Speaking as part of LGBT history month, that is supposed to be inclussive of bisexuality & transsexualism, whilst being Julie Bindell must require some serious brass neck.

Isn't her welcome (or otherwise) at an LGBT event a matter for the LGBT community rather than straight cis gendered feminists?

If this was a feminist event and she was being no-platformed by transactivists, that would be a different matter.

What's cis? Surely you just mean women.

AnotherRandomMale That's a rather big assumption that all the women on this thread are heterosexual. If there's any brass neck, it seems to be yours for assuming that there are no lesbian women, or even men, on this thread.

Report
AnotherRandomMale · 06/01/2017 22:16

I was expecting that.

Less than 2% of the population identify as gay or lesbian

I'm not assuming none of the women are lesbian (or indeed that all of the posters are women)

But given that the vast majority of the membership of this site appear to present as female and the vast majority of women are not Lesbians, it seems a fair logical deduction that the majority of posters on this topic are straight women

I very much doubt that 2% of the posters on this thread are straight. In fact, just by joining in I have pushed it up to at least 10%.

Anyway, Julie Bindel - I agree with probably no more than 65% of what she writes. But she is a lesbian warrior, she has done so much to admire, and it sticks in my craw that a bunch of students feel they have the right to try to shut her down.

And yet, you couldn't be more wrong.

I don't always agree with what Julie has to say, but then feminism isn't an echo chamber, so I don't have to. However, this is a working class LGBT event, and Julie is a working class lesbian, who is there to talk about her background and sexuality. If people don't want to hear her speak, they are extremely welcome to not turn up. To try and get a charity closed down and make death threats toward her is bullshit.

Miffer · 07/01/2017 02:38

Interesting that there seem to be very vocal gay men in support of Julie on the comments. I always found it strange that gay men didn't take more offence at some of the more problematic trans narratives.

I'm bi and Bindel has written some crap opinons on bisexuals. But does that mean i think she should be no platformed? No! You can't ban everyone you disagree with. I agree with her on some other topics, and not on others. That's usually how it is, isn't it. There needs to be debate, not no platforming.

It's obvious that this is happening to her because she is a woman, a feminist, lesbian and a "terf". Remember the event when she was banned from speaking but misogynist, racist transphobe Milo wasn't at first. He is male, after all.

From the Facebook page comments:
Inviting Bindel to speak on LGBT is like inviting hannibal lecter to do a segment on a cookery show.

God, the hyperbole Hmm

Not every speaker, at every event, can represent every section of the rainbow. To have a lesbian speak doesn't negate the experience of anyone, she is there to talk about her working class lesbian experience and that's perfectly valid, all by itself.

I'm a working class lib fem, lesbian with no beef with the trans community. I feel the same contempt for the 'thems all menz' transphobes as I do the 'die, CIS bitch die' trans activists. They are both the same brand of idiot, as far as I can see but I accept that they are both part of my community. I don't hold with censoring either, as I hope the sunlight of open debate might bring them both round to a more reasonable and reasoned position.

It goes without saying that I'm not a Bindel fan but not agreeing with what she says, doesn't make me think she should be silenced. I've signed the petition and hope you do too. The gagging of any activist does the whole community a great disservice and fuck knows who they'll come for next.
