Because there are no real women about who are qualified to be the Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls

This is totally bizarre Confused

Are there other similar honorary positions awarded to Spider-Man and Captain America or is it only girls who are fobbed off with fictional role models?

Earlier today I read a comment to the effect that 2016 was written by David Lynch. I think I believe it.

Well that would explain a lot.

I honestly thought it was a piss-take when I first saw the headline.

It's a huge "fuck you" to women and girls.

Real women can't even represent themselves. They have decided to use an idea of a woman created by men to represent women. This sounds like mansplaining to me..

The guardian article about this says it's not the first fictional character used:

"The choice of Wonder Woman was not the first time a fictional honorary ambassador was chosen to represent the UN. Previously, Winnie the Pooh was an ambassador for International Day of Friendship, and a character from Angry Birds was chosen for International Day of Happiness, according to NPR. Tinker Bell was made “honorary ambassador of green” in 2009."

But still, women and girls need real role models. How can they aspire to be a fictional character who only achieves what she does because she has super powers?

'Friendship', 'Happiness' and 'Green' are inanimate things and do not constitute 51% of the world's population. Women are not inanimate. There are plenty of women who could be made spokespeople - although maybe not with huge tits, skimpy costumes and a snappable waist - and they'd probably have ideas of their own too. Great. Male fantasy gets to be women's ambassador.
