Basically, men couldn't distinguish between 'banter' in a lads mag and quotes from actual rapists. I'm glad we have gone a little distance from the lad mag culture with so many of them having disappeared over the last few years, but it just goes to show that the ideology they espouse is still alive and well.

Lad mag culture hasn't disappeared just because lads mags have fallen away.

The culture has just moved a bit. Into the Internet. And grown into a free-for-all, anonymous, free download porn, rate-your-hooker, revenge upload pics, peado frenzy.

I yearn for the innocent days of Lads Mags. Blokes used to talk to each other and try to pull in clubs. Now they just silently share grim Porno with each other and buy sex online.

(Cynical, me)

I completely agree with Ophelia, I don't think 'lad mag' culture is declining, it's just sales have suffered because we now live in a digital world.

I'm not defending and my of the quotes in that study, the examples I read were absolutely appalling, however, I also couldn't tell which ones were 'jokes' from lad mags and which ones were quotes from rapists. I don't think it reflects badly on the participants in the study that they couldn't tell either because they were all the same mysoginistic, disgusting quotes in tone. I also read that th participants realised they were vile when they weren't in the 'lad mag' context.

We no longer need lads mags, we now have the lad bible, and various other sites that perpetuate ideas of women being fucktoys

Me neither, I thought the headline was strange - the point is not that the men are incapable of telling, but that the quotes are indistinguishable i.e. it's the mags at fault.

Rape culture isn't the fault of Lads Mags.

Rape culture may not be the fault of lad mags. They certainly feed/fed it wholeheartedly though.

How many women would have been able to tell the difference?

Or am I missing the point?

The point is that no one can tell the difference, since rape culture IS our society's version of "normal".

Ie. that magazines seen as mainstream and acceptable, are actually very rape-y.
