I'm really thinking now that I need to start speaking to my junior age child about the subject of trans now, in case he sees it somewhere else first and is sucked in by something like this. Surely the science museum should not be involved in unscientific stuff like this??

Good point about mutilating young bodies. Does the Science Museum also uncritically show foot binding, FGM, neck extending, lip plates etc as something people just do to 'fit in' culturally? Or is it just the mutilation of breast binding that's ok?

ageingrunner and others- I'm a bit new to this topic and am curious. What are you worried about your child being 'sucked in' to? I thought the idea that sex is biological and gender a social construct was pretty widely accepted?

Well, so did I. But the idea that gender is innate, and biological sex is something that can be changed seems to be taking hold in some areas. Some trans people refer to their biological sex as being 'assigned at birth' in the same way as some intersex people have a sex assigned to them based on the external genitalia. So they are saying that their brain sex is different to their biological sex and that the drs at their birth made the wrong decision on this, somehow. Bear in mind that these people do not have any disorder of sexual development, and may have given birth to of fathered children before deciding they are actually the opposite sex.
So, yes, I am concerned about how children might be influenced to believe that they are trans, especially if this stuff is now being presented as science by the science museum.

As a parent, this is how I see it: The idea that whether you are a girl or a boy is down to what you look like, or what interests you have, is sexism. I'm bringing my children up to believe in equality, that the only differences are that, put simply, boys have penises and girls have vaginas. That girls and boys can be, do, like, wear etc whatever they like, and it has no bearing on whether they are a boy or a girl.

And yet, organisations like Gendered Intelligence are paid by the government to write policy guidance and go into schools to teach young children the exact opposite - that biological sex is less important than gender (which is based on harmful stereotypes), and that things which are segregated by sex for good, obvious reasons, should be segregated by gender. That if you are a feminine boy or a masculine girl there is something wrong with you, and you should seek medical help.

I guess so Lorelei, but it's in the science museum, and changing the meaning of words doesn't change scientific facts like sexual dimorphism.

It's also irresponsible to present these ideas uncritically, reliant as they are on stereotypes of what boys and girls should be/look like.
