female genital mutilation on tv right now

Community Chanel .
I can hardly believe what I am seeing. Older women tying down a young girl and slicing off her clitoris, and inner and outer labia . ( type 3 FGM)
No anaesthetic , and using a razor blade that has been used many times before .
While the poor child shrieks in terror and agony the women including her mother are smiling and chanting to drown out her screams.

I cannot express my horror and sorrow on behalf of this girl and many others like her

Later in the programme the same smirking "cutter" gleefully sliced the young bride's genitals to allow entry of her new husband Shock

Me too girafe. It was a sensitive and well made programme , narrated by Meryl Streep but I was frozen in terror as I watched it. What really got me was the smirk

What is really unfathomable is the collusion of these women in the idea of their own sex as faulty and with men's right to have their brides opened up so they can stick their dick in to the poor wounded creature they own.

Sometimes women's collusion in their own torture sickens me. Bugger culture. A few years in jail for these cutters and the women who support them would end it quicker than all the touchy feely "understanding" and "education".

I expect to now get flamed for my lack of understanding. So be it.

Grimble I feel exactly the same. The cutters seemed to be relishing the child's distress.

It was harrowing

I do agree that the cutter and both parents should be prosecuted but then would the child be taken into care ?

The cutters have respect in their culture one where very little is given to women, to be cut becomes a badge of honour and the real reason why it's done is to satisfy men

So why just punish women when they are not the ones in control

The culture is slowly changing, never fast enough. Education is filtering to the younger generations, it is those who have been indoctrinated over the years that are the issue. Grandmother tells mother tells daughter, only when we teach a generation it is wrong do we see change. If it is all you have ever known it is hard to go against it. However in relation to parents who permit it in the first world they don't deserve the joy of having children so whilst care is not a good thing it is a damn sight better than the abuse from parents. The issue is it is only discovered after the fact and so many poor children go through this. Long prison sentences strictly enforced is a necessity.

Somebody stood by and filmed this happening in real time ?

Yes. Filmed in real time. The worst thing I have ever seen on tv in my life.

No flaming from me Grimble. It's the one issue Germaine Greer got completely wrong. There's no cultural defence for child abuse.

I am not sure what GG said on the subject but culture can't be ignored

It would be impossible to put in prison everyone involved these countries are mostly very very poor there is no benefits system to back them up, girls might be rejected by other family members and where would they go

Here we have looked away, the governments (both sides) haven't bothered to deal with the issue which is a disgrace. So little education, how do you change cultural ideas, can we really take away hundreds of girls and place them into care what about the other children in the family. All this has to be considered but it has been far easier to ignore as it goes on within cultures who have struggled with social integration. How do we empower women and girls to give them the strength to not comply and how do we convince them that it is not necessary of a badge of honour

They seem to be doing something right with education so we are we here not learning from that

I watched this a few weeks ago although I missed the first 10/15 mins so didn't see the actual cutting. I thought it was an interesting programme and was pleased to see that some women are standing up in opposition to fgm. I thought it was interesting how a women favoured cutting because she said how else would we keep clean? She referred to the labia as dangling like leaves and implies it would be hard to keep clean and not smell.

I cannot think of a more painful and cruel thing to do to a girl child than slice off her clitoris and labia. It is utterly barbaric and there is no cultural defence .
The cutter demonstrated on a piece of Fabric how she stitched up the wound using THORNS and STRING. I KID YOU NOT. They then tied the young girl's legs together above her knees so she had to hobble around while the would healed.

Strange isn't that men have rather more dangly bits than women but no one suggests cutting them off so they don't smell?

FGM - another case of women being compliant in enforcing their own inferiority.

Genital mutation unless for medical reasons is always wrong.

I think I may have seen this a few years ago or something very similar. It was horrific Sad

Did they interview a girl who had more or left the community, and refused to be cut?
If it was I'm sure it was around ten year ago

It's not really that simple is it. Very very few women don't have access to benefits, higher education, free health care, domestic violence is a way of life their role in life is to get married and have children

Have access

Not don't have access

Report

I never said it was simple that Enthusiasm. If you go back long enough in this country very very few women had access to benefits, higher education, free health care and domestic violence was (for some still is) a way of life and our future was to get married and have children….and so it remained until women decided to stop being compliant in their own inferiority.

Fortunately there are signs now that women in countries where FGM is routinely practised are deciding to be non-compliant and take a hit in their personal lives - and that will be one important key to these countries eventually changing.
