Recording rape culture

I'd like to use this thread to record examples of rape culture - when individuals, the media, or both, minimise rape and sexual assault.

It's rarer now to see a headline about a "romp" and find it describes a rape, but some commentators still leave a lot to be desired.

I hope this will be a long running thread, as with the Victims of Violence thread, to note examples.

I will start with two below.

This young man considered he had a right to sex regardless of his girlfriend's wishes. Luckily he was stopped and later convicted.

A BBC commentator describes Adam Johnson's sexual assault of a teenage girl as a "desperately tragic own goal" - with the focus on the impact on the perpetrator, not the victim.

Some of comments on that first article. Wow.

What does she expect if she is in a hotel with him. He has had his life ruined. Wow.

I am amazed you have no posts on this considering what is occurring regards sexual assault in Europe and the media being ordered originally to cover it up
Where are the feminists on this, where are the celebrity feminists.
Any woman should be horrified at the sexual assaults but there is a deafening silence.

Hi Daisy

I think you are new to MN - welcome! You accidentally messaged me your first post.

There have been 8 full threads on the In The News board about Cologne that you might want to look at.

As well as several on Cologne in the feminist section. But yes, the mayor of Cologne's classic piece of victim blaming in the aftermath is indeed a prime example of rape culture in action (and article 177 of the German penal code which basically decodes as "it isn't rape unless you physically fight back" is a massive example of institutionalised rape culture enshrined in legislation).

Agree, Lurcio.

A link to the mayor's comments about a code of conduct for women. It's not clear how we go about keeping people at arm's length in a packed crowd!

Sky New's reaction to Adam Johnson's conviction for sexual activity with a minor and grooming.

And the reactions of people on Twitter.

And even some of the reactions on MN.

All victim blaming rape culture.

I have been advised there are other threads regards rape culture, one had 11 posts and one site is closed.
Perhaps it was thought not worth discussing,I'm new so be patient folks.
There appears to be an alarming culture of rape but also cultures where rape of Western women is deemed allowable.
Very worrying.

Here's the latest thread on cologne, Daisy

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/in_the_news/2565952-Sex-Attacks-in-Cologne-and-other-European-Cities-Part-IX

MN threads are full after 1000 posts so there are more than 8000 posts in total! Links to the first 8 threads are in the OP of that thread.

Otherwise, rape culture comes up in general discussions on this board and Mn a fair bit. We tend to start new threads rather than revive ones that are months old and sometimes discussions peter out and come back.

Feel free to start from here and post examples of rape culture on this thread or to discuss generally on this board!

Headline on an article about Adam Johnson in the Belfast Telegraph today, "A starry lifestyle with many temptations" So the victim was a "temptress" then, not a vulnerable child. The article goes on to discuss the alteration in "football's attitude to sexual misconduct" by comparing a manager who was sacked in 1977 for having an affair with the club physio's wife with Ched Evans being allowed to train at Sheffield United's grounds post conviction. At least the article did refer to him as "convicted rapist Ched Evans".... but still, lumping this rape together with an affair and just calling them both "sexual misconduct" is crass in the extreme.

I havent signed it as its a bit vague. What measures do they want brought forward?

Daisyonthegreen · 04/03/2016 11:28

Basically I think it's to try and get the Authorities to recognise that women must be free to go about their business unmolested, the powers that be are trying to ignore the issue.
I think we should sign in our thousands.

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 04/03/2016 11:55

Thank you daisy. But surely the law already says women should go about their business unmolested? I know its not exactly enforced, but thats why "feminism". I think trying to encompass that into a petition is a tad naive? Unless i'm misinterpretting it?
