This one sounds as if it might be fun. Just nip out and make sure I've got some pop-corn in.

Brilliant, thanks for posting Firestone, Bindel's talks are always so humane and she was amazing at last year's RadFem. It' such a shame that men fight so hard to silence her, but not exactly a surprise.

Lottapianos · 04/09/2015 12:42

She's great, very inspiring. She gets portrayed as some agressive man hating monster, but every time I've seen her speak on TV, I've been struck by how warm and thoughtful she is. She's certainly angry, and has every right to be, but I've never seen her behave agressively.

FirestoneD · 04/09/2015 12:49

She is speaking again at RadFems Resist on the 12th and 13th of September, this time on the No Platforming of Radical Feminists.

I know, I just can't get there this year. Next year though.

MephistophelesApprentice · 04/09/2015 12:55

And I am sick of hearing from individual women that their men are all right.

And then they all come along, the eighty million good Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. Of course the others are swine, but this one is a first-class Jew. - Himmler

YonicScrewdriver · 04/09/2015 12:58

Err, what, Meph?

MephistophelesApprentice · 04/09/2015 13:04

Having read that article, I decided to see how many equivalent quotes from other movements I could find that expressed similar sentiments. Surprisingly, many directed me towards Nazi officials, though the section about putting men in camps had a large number of similar links towards soviet era penal institutions known as gulags. Of course, in the gulags visitors or day passes were not encouraged, although similar arrangements were made for subversives (communists etc) in pre-Wannsee german political camps.

There are rare times I am glad that feminism doesn't have more political power and sadly this person has given me one of them.

"And I am sick of hearing from individual women that their men are all right. Those men have been shored up by the advantages of patriarchy and they are complacent, they are not stopping other men from being shit."

Do you disagree with the fuller quote, Meph? Can't remember where you stand on "male privilege" but this is a statement about it - AKA if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Also - Buffy's recent thread about men who are fairly regular on FWR not calling out Burke on his street punching plan.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 04/09/2015 13:13

I noticed how nice Bindel is in her vision about camps for men, compared to such ideas men might have about women.

I've read MRA's online fantasize about putting women they don't like in camps to be raped by men. Breivik wanted to put women in breeding camps.

Meanwhile, this awful Bindel wants to put men in non-violent camps where they can drive around in cars (lol what) until they learn how to be non-violent towards women.

I do not agree with her about stuff like political lesbianism but I agree with her that heterosexuality under patriarchy is shitty, yes.

BTW, I disagree with the "camps" idea but I think it's a thought experiment against the strongest group, not an actual awful event that an oppressive group did to a weaker group (and a lot worse of course, as they were death camps, not segregation camps - apartheid might be a closer analogy though again, that was the stronger group against the weaker)

Frans, you just posted the most horribly sick thing about the drowned refugee child. Please go away.

MephistophelesApprentice · 04/09/2015 13:17

I believe that privilege exists and certain privileges have been given to males that have created a situation of injustice. I oppose it when I encounter it, even with my closest friends (minor example - my best friend no longer "rapes" the opposition on call of duty).

But I do not believe in collective responsibility for past crimes, only towards building a superior future, and there are some solutions which I will oppose the way my grandparents opposed the Final one.

But there are some solutions

YonicScrewdriver · 04/09/2015 13:20

Ok Meph - then can you see the difference between this suggestion of segregation of the powerful group from the non powerful group, where members of the powerful group often abuse, rape and kill members of the non powerful group, and death camps for Jewish people?

YonicScrewdriver

The nazis believed that the Jews ruled the world (the powerful group), and that imprisoning them in camps was a way of reclaiming power.

Can you not see the similarities?

YonicScrewdriver · 04/09/2015 13:21

Ps - I disagree with segregation, but even more strongly, I disagree with your comparison.

Yonic, to be clear, I HATE people who make lazy comparisons between feminism and nazism, because the two are incomparable. I am not doing this as an undermining tactic or because her views offend me, but because they are genuinely morally insupportable and functionally similar to views espoused by authoritarian groups who have historically engaged in crimes against humanity.
