Cheat's guide to feminism

It can be difficult sometimes to properly adhere to one's feminist principles in the face of pressure from the patriarchy. We all have to make choices - do we wear a little make up to work in order to look 'professional' or do we decide to demand respect bare faced, for example.

I have decided that we should put together a 'cheat's guide' - a list of ways in which we can stick it to the patriarchy but have the hassle free benefits of appearing to comply.

I have a couple of suggestions, top tips if you will, to get us started:

In a dilemma as to whether to shave your legs or not? Let your hairs grow to full length then crochet them into fishnets!

Feel conflicted about taking your husband's name or keeping your own? Just make sure you only ever date people with the same surname as you.

Any more bright ideas? Wink

Along the lines of my first dilemma:

Like wearing makeup but fear you are only doing so as a result of social conditioning? Get a job as a mime or clown for as much guilt-free makeup as you like!

Oops! I thought this was a funny idea at 3am yesterday after wine. Maybe not! In my defence it was supposed to be for the giggles, and not to take the piss or denigrate feminism. Blush

It is kinda funny, but would no doubt be a troll magnet.

All sorts of things look good at 0300. Several men have done anyway Grin

My one was:

Feel the need to wear makeup for work? Aware that your liking of makeup is patriarchy/media induced and that the idea that women need it to look "presentable" is not great?

Simply apply it on their time - on the train or in the bogs at work. Job done Grin

(I actually do this. I prefer my appearance with makeup these days, and think it's better for my work to have some slap on. But I'm fucked if I'm getting up earlier in order to do it, and feel that joining in with the pretence that it is "effortless" by keeping application private and secret is a step too far Grin)

Grin I thought it was funny. I like the fishnet leg hairs.
