Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Right you pesky feminists, which sort of rape is *worse* <Dawkins related>

So Dawkins (self proclaimed ironic prophet) has decided that date rape is not as bad as a rape with a knife at your throat.

I have a question - what if the date rape includes a knife at the throat - what then - who wins at being the worst?

Is there a rule that date rape doesn't include knives? Do us feminists not know this rule for rapists?

Sorry to be crass but I cant help wondering which Richard Dakins would find worse - having his arse forcefully penetrated by a stranger or having it forcefully penetrated by an acquaintance.

Sigh - illogical I know, I'm just disappointed at RD - I like him. Sad

While we're here can we also rank ongoing sexual abuse as well. I think that might also be helpful to Dawkins.

Jesus wept some people are all kinds of insensitive!

I'm guessing he is sort of 'factoring' in the danger of losing life when a knife is involved.

I just read his 'apology'. I literally DETEST all this "i am so logical because I am an atheist" shite he spouts.

Because what exactly is illogical about saying that rape is rape whatever the circumstances. The act of having a knife against someone's throat is not included in the act of rape, it is an assault of some description . Not actually relevant to the act of rape. So logic doesn't seem to be fitting here.

X-post

Bus seriously, he would rather, say, his hypothetical husband who he loves, trusts and relies on financially does this, or some maniac jumps out of the bushes at him weilding a knife.

Does he not understand that there really is little debate on this in this country, rape is rape and aggravated rape is aggravated rape. If you are also violently assulted, a victim of GBH or attempted murder the aggressor is tried for those things too. That is if you ever get to court.

My friend was 'date raped' with a pillow over her face. Suppose that 'logically' would be a much nicer and softer way to be raped.

Jesus, yes jesus wept.

CatKisser agree with you completely, including being disappointed with him.

This is like 'good AIDS' and 'bad AIDS' stuff. Really, very very poor show.

My God, he doesn't actually understand that date rape and stranger rape and "mild" paedophilia and violent paedophillia are the same thing under UK law does he? He really is a shit philosopher. And lawyer.

For the person being raped it doesn't matter what scenario it is.

But I understand what point he's trying to get at, although he made it very poorly and no wonder it caused offence. He could have just easily had said, 'getting run over by a car is bad, but by a train is worse', although both are bad either way if the outcome is the same.

why is it for these sorts of "logical" arguments, people so often choose rape as the hypothetical situation?

In all innocence, I'd be grateful if someone could explain the issue. It does seem to me (and others) that there are a variety of scenarios which indicates a spectrum or scale. It occurs t

Bloody iPhone.

It occurs to me too that homocide has varying degrees under the law in most countries regardless of dead being dead (there aren't degrees of dead, but degrees of causing death do exist).

Well ask yourself this question Monty: In what circumstances would you rather be raped?

I'm guessing your answer would be "I'd rather not be raped at all."

That, for me, is why his comments are so distasteful.

i think a date rape is a personal betrayal on top of a rape.

his comments show that he thinks that if you agree to go on a date with somebody you are a little bit attracted to them, at least, so therefore, he can't understand why it is so bad to be raped by somebody you perhaps potentially could have been attracted to. It just shows he's no comprehension of the horror whatsoever.

Picklepest · 29/07/2014 20:28

Rape implies I guess for (some) men (I have no idea why) violence. Ergo it's only rape if a stranger on a dark alley and you were in dowdy clothes. Anything else is filed under some variation of 'asking for it'.

Makes so bloody mad and sad.

But Catkisser, in the highly unlikely scenario that I had to make such a terrible choice, I would make a choice. I'm pretty clear about what I'd choose too. Sorry, is that the wrong answer?

picklepest, yes, that's it. unless it's a total stranger, RD thinks the victim was somewhere near asking for it. :0
