Fascinating radio talk - all about the Blue Stocking society in the late 18th century. It was a group set up so men and women could discuss intellectual ideas as equals - rather than the men and women separating into groups.

Talks about how the rise of the female voice and also the way female intellectualism became feared by men.

The Bluestockings book is good, too, though it's about women getting into education from the 19th century more than the Bluestocking Society itself.

Sadly, my mother talks about inelligent women as bluestockings, as if they were a bit odd, you know, like 'wome in comfortable shoes', or divorced women, or men who voice opinions on curtains etc.

as a result, she doesn't have a clue that I'm studying an MA. She'll just think me too much of a blue stocking.

Wish I could listen to it.

I had no idea of the origin of the word bluestocking and that it was because of the men's clothing.

The irony.

Yes - I did think that was a bit ironic.
