Gone Girl Book and Film SPOILERS

I've just finished reading this book. I'm in two minds how I feel about it from a feminist perspective. On the one hand, I liked the real Amy's attitude to the Cool Girl thing (and had thought the diary Amy was too manpleasing). I wasn't keen on the false rape allegation but on the other hand, she was clearly very disturbed. So interested in other views.

About the film. I think Rosamund Pike seems like a good choice for Amy and Ben Affleck for Nick but the ages.... argh!!! The book was quite specific about the ages of the characters, it featured in the character development, especially that Amy was about 5 years older than Nick, Shawna was about 10 years older than Nick and obviously Go was the same age as Nick. However, looking at the actors' ages:

Amy 39 - Rosamund Pike 35
Nick 34 - Ben Affleck 44
Margo 34 - Carrie Coon 34
Desi 39/40 - Neil Patrick Harris 39
Shawna (suggested to be about 10 years older than Nick) 40+ - Kathleen Rose Perkins 40
Andie 23 - Emily Ratajkowski 23

I know this is no surprise as it is par for the course in Hollywood. Very annoying though.

I really enjoyed the book, probably won't bother with the film tbh. I will be really surprised if the people behind it don't feel tempted to punish Amy in some way. I noticed that that seems to be the main complaint in online book threads, that people are disappointed she 'gets away with it'. That's very unusual in fiction!

In fact it's usually more likely that something terrible happens to the woman to punish her husband, dying in childbirth while he's screwing someone, etc.

But it's not unusual for male protagonists to get away with terrible behaviour. IMO Amy is punished by getting to stay with her equally awful husband!

She had a pretty bad time in the caravan park, I thought..

I know, but even there people have moaned about how she gets away with murder! It's been a while since I read the book but I'm pretty sure that if Desi had been female he'd have been called a bunny boiling psycho.
