I hadn't heard this was on, so for other posters' benefit: Feminism in London.

The programme certainly looks like an interesting one.

Dammit I was too apathetic to go this year. Hope you enjoy it Yoni.

I was at the incarcerated women one. V moving talk by a former prisoner (who broke down, while describing her former abuse, and got a standing ovation)

I am at the trafficking one this afternoon.

Finn McKay was amazing. Really great and inspirational speaker who closed the show.

I went to the meet afterwards that was about setting up a Stop Porn Culture campaign, they are planning a conference for March.

Can't type too much now as laptop out of charge so on crappy phone.

My favourite phrase from the Women in Prison organisation talking about why women end up in prison (putting it down here before I forget it) 'Maybe it isn't the fish, maybe it's the water'

She really highlighted why, from her experience of speaking to women prisoners, the problem is not usually with the woman, but with society. That is not to absolve them of their own responsibility, but to highlight the many, many ways they have been let down before that point.

And I just want to add - If you have never seen Finn MacKay speak, and you have the opportunity - TAKE IT. Cancel other stuff if you have to. She was completely brilliant

OK - SO the Stop Porn Culture is linked to this US campaign

They have now set up SPC groups/campaigns in Norway, Germany and Austria. They are looking to expand this further.

The presentation from the women who are doing this in the above countries was about why the campaign is needed and what they are doing ( raising awareness, stickering adverts etc.,).

They are planning an international conference, held in London, in March, and Gail Dines will be coming. They were looking for people who would volunteer to help spread the word, help organise etc.

It was pointed out that this is already being raised in this country by existing groups/campaigns (and to be fair their presentation did imply that they were bringing us something new).

One of the (how do I phrase this right) older experienced feminists shared her experiences of how they were received in the 70s when trying to do something similar (told they were joyless, anti sex, censorship etc.,) and that they have to protect themselves from the trauma of the stuff they may see while putting this stuff together.

Young feminist asked about 'acceptable / feminist porn'

Other people pointed out that porn is not a necessity. The huge amount of money invested in taking a part of human relationships, filming it and then selling it back to us was also discussed.

...... Will remember more....

She speaks at lots of conferences. If you look on her blog, she often says where she is speaking next.

Oh, and on the Stop Porn Culture link above there are presentations that anyone can download (on one of the tabs) detailing the damage of Porn etc

I'm totally impressed you managed to get the WiFi working Envy

Finn was great. The non-hierarchical relationships workshop I went to was rubbish, wish I'd gone to the overlapping power one instead.
