I saw an advert on TV last night for pink casino, an online casino aimed at "girls". Bloody ridiculous idea that women will only gamble if you cover the site in pink.

Argh, just saw this on 4 music Grammy ads. If I didn't know better
I'd assume it was aimed at 7 year old girls. my jaw dropped. Ridiculous.

I imagine its mostly full of sleazy guys who think they will make more money off playing
women! Maybe that's the real target market...

It is bloody ridiculous ... but the reason companies keep doing it is because it works. Every time they release a new phone in pink I think "That'll never sell". Every time a new car is given a pink edition I think "no-one will but this". My local football team released a version of the shirt for women, with the blue and white stripes replaced with pink and white, and I thought "why would anyone wear a team shirt in the wrong colours?".
All these things are successful though - they keep releasing them and some women keep buying them. You cannot blame a company for selling what people want.

I hate the amount of gambling adverts there are on tv in general. DH watches football on Sky Sports and its all betting adverts, we've had a few friends with quite serious gambling addictions and it ruins lives.
They're advertised as so exciting and fun with bright colours and flashing images and at times when children and teenagers are watching. I just think they're so dangerous.

Posted too soon. I've noticed to that especially bingo sites tend to be advertised during the day as social networks possibly for (lonely) SAHMs. (Lonely in brackets because I don't want to make assumptions about SAHPs)

Every time they release a new phone in pink I think "That'll never sell".

I have an insight into this, but I'm not sure if it's particular to me or not.

I was a gawky looking teenager and severely bullied for not meeting beauty standards. I also got bullied more if I tried to better myself, ie. get a haircut or wear makeup.

So when I got a fresh start at college I went ubergirly. I had an athletic figure you see and people used to say I wasn't feminine enough and ugly and mannish. But people definitely stopped the comments as much because I guess it's ridiculous to say that the girl in the pink knee highs, mini skirt and pink fluffy pen is mannish. I also she'd a lot of the gawkyness in late puberty. The hypergirliness continued through a destructive relationship until around 25 (interestingly when the brain fully matures). Anyway, I started to value myself for things other than appearance. I'm now living pink free as I don't feel I have to signpost that I am a girl, not ugly and not to be bullied (obviously that kind of bullying doesn't happen in professional circles).
There is sometimes a lot on here about 'authentic self'. I don't believe I was allowed to be my authentic self due to the patriarchy till adulthood and wore this pink mask to protect myself. I wonder if others' investment in pink is an exercise in self validation. Or maybe they just like it and I'm just odd.

I don't think I would have fallen for a pink casino though. My pinkness was limited to material reality: pink clothes, accessories etc. Never a pink car thank goodness, I would really resent paying off that monstrosity.

One of my friends does have a pink car though. She says she can't go out in it without makeup because people expect a fit girl to be driving it. Make of that what you will.

DavidBanner I agree totally. It’s verging on immoral that those ads are running at a time when people have been trapped in their homes often with financial worries. I lose all respect for any celebrity who appears in those Ads and thereby endorses online gambling.
