Casualty tonight

Tonight and the 13th, Casualty is going to be covering an FGM storyline. I don't know much about it and I don't usually watch Casualty but will be tuning in tonight. Thought some of you may be interested too.
It starts at 9.20 and I think it's BBC1

It's covered (some of) the complications in pregnancy and the fact that there is sensitive support from pregnant women who have undergone FGM. It's also covered the idea of taking girls out of the country to undergo it. The younger sister was excited to go, which I think was an important thing to show as it highlighted the cultural aspect.

It showed a clip of next week, which looks like they have attempted to do it at home and one of the girls has hemorrhaged.

I'm really pleased to see it covered on mainstream tv, not just in the news.

I had gone off Casualty because I wasn't finding the characters compelling but then I saw your post and it piqued my curiosity.

I thought they handled it very well and sensitively. I really liked how they characterised the mother. She clearly loves her daughter and cares about her which I think is a good way to show how this is such a difficult issue when you look beyond the surface.

I watched it I have very little understanding of it. Do they cut away any part of the vagina that gives pleasure and then sew it up only leaving a hole to penetrate?

There are four different types but it seemed as though the type of FGM being covered in casualty was infibulation which is removal of all the external genitalia and then sewing the whole area up with just a tiny hole for urine and menstruation.

I thought it covered a wide range of FGM issues in a short time. Very well done.

It's terrible. I have a friend who's a campaigner about FGM as she had it done to her as a child. She does a lot of runs etc; raising money but says small parts of the storyline were inaccurate but she's happy that FGM is being recognised more widely. It's horrific, isn't it?

It is horrific.
Though I have read on FGM charity sites that it is possible to end FGM in a generation (which is what happened with foot binding in China).
