A bit shocked at this actually.

I don't think I have ever posted a thread in this section but here goes...

Someone on my FB just shared this.

Between that and the whole ARRSE debacle I think I have started taking this section a bit more seriously.

People who think we don't need feminism anymore are misguided. Yes, ok we're not slaves in the kitchen anymore and men don't have to be the emotionally stunted breadwinners but things are far from better... hmm

I was never of the idea that we don't need feminism anymore, I just didn't realise how bad it still actually is, it just seems the only difference is a lot of the time it isn't voiced.

Someone shared that on my facebook too ... scary. sad

I just googled it as well, it's pretty much accurate. sad

Wasn't digging at you schro smile

I know what you're getting at & agree. I've reposted it on my page

www.facebook.com/pages/Yes-Im-a-feminist-No-I-dont-hate-men/392916050385

It's sad but when I originally clicked on here I thought it would be a link to some horrible 'joke' you'd seen or something so at least it's something that's trying to raise awareness!

That actually turned my stomach.

It's easy to sometimes get a little bit complacent these days, I find. I like to come on here for my reality dose to shock me out of my happy little rut.

Cautionary I didn't think you were, sorry if it sounded like I did!

I'll go have a look on your page. I think it wouldn't have made me feel so ill about it if it was a joke as some people have a crap sense of humour, it was because it wasn't and obviously those are the most searched for phrases. sad

Makes If it wasn't for that and the stuff that's been going on here for the past while, I think I would probably still be a bit blissfully ignorant.

I'm quite young but my mum told me what it was like being in her 20s in the early 90s and it sounded like we'd regressed, in terms of what is was like for a young girl/woman.

That's partly why I set up the page...I got fed up feeling like the only young person who'd even noticed. I know i'm not but it can seem that way, when feminism is a dirty word & you're trying to get your head around the cheek people have turned to avoid all these issues.

Rant over, sorry for hijacking! smile

I've liked your page.

And no, hijack away, I started this thread as I wanted to talk about it a bit. New eyes and all that.

I'm 22 btw so quite young too. smile The person who originally posted that on my FB is 24 as well.

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:12:19

Oh snap...am 22 also smile

Yeah, I set up that page to keep myself involved with it all in a way & do my bit for armchair activism. It's tempting to not look things up because it's just so disheartening sometimes but having to keep the page going, post things for debate, hear other's opinions & keep up to date on 'gender' news has really opened my eyes!

I can't believe the amount of stick you've had to put up with on that page!

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:16:12

It keeps me determined & reminds me why I bother & why we need it! smile

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:19:54

(also, there's loads more on there that do get it & agree, use the page & share things from it, which makes me feel a little less useless in it all aha)

I've seen that there are lots who do agree. smile I think I will be following from now on.

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:24:58

Every little helps smile

Nice to know there's yet another woman my age who gives a damn! grin

AnyFucker Mon 18-Mar-13 20:26:12

Nice to see another recruit

Not so nice for you though. That lightbulb moment when you realise that actually feminism is more important than ever is certainly not a misty romantic notion. It fucking hurts

Yeah AF, you're right. It was a pretty sickly feeling actually and has been brewing for the past couple of weeks with all the stuff that's been happening on here.

TheCautionaryWhale There are lots of women my age that I know who are pretty strong believers. smile

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:28:40

Agree with AF, it isn't a nice realization!

I've lived in a bit of a backwater town in norfolk so the few times i've casually talked about slutwalk, one billion rising or anything like that I've been cast funny looks and told i'm obviously 'one of those man haters'.

Moved down south recently so it's not quite as bad as it was but not met many who aren't scared by the word iyswim.

BertieBotts Mon 18-Mar-13 20:31:15

Woo! <flies flag for young feminists>

I was probably about 22 when I started getting angry about stuff too.

On the subject of facebook, and also people in their early 20s, I noticed recently that a lot of my friends have "liked" a page called The Lad Bible, I don't know if you've noticed a similar trend, but whenever someone reposts something from there it's always utterly disgusting and offensive, especially towards women. I was intrigued enough to take a look at the page itself the other day and was horrified. And yet this seems to be the overriding attitude of my generation. Nice sad

TheCautionaryWhale Mon 18-Mar-13 20:33:19

I've noticed the lad bible but not bothered questioning that page like I do some others (via my page, not personal account) because it's like a drop in the ocean...unfortunately. The lass bible was created as a backlash but isn't much better & is just a tit for tat of sexism.

I've stayed clear to be honest!

I'm in Glasgow so it's not hard to find lots of feminists here and I am pretty sure we had a slutwalk here too. The downside is that there is probably so many because of the attitudes of so many men here!

Bertie I've heard of that, I don't know how though? Probably through people liking it on FB. I'll give it a miss tonight, I had a long look at that site, the one that's been bothering here for the past while today and I still feel ill, proper physically ill.

Just told DH about this and asked his opinion and he just shrugged and said it's nothing to worry about, that it's 'just google' WTF?

shock But that's the problem, it really isn't. The reason it's there is because it is the most popular actual searches. sad
